“Walters is again DC's home for Florida State football. The Saturday FSU visits 10th ranked Alabama at 3.30 pm. Walters is loaded with televisions and located just across the street from Nationals Park.”From the transcript

The Nats win streak extended to four-games with another comeback victory on Tuesday night. Mark & Al dig into the 6-3 victory over the visiting Phillies, who are now five and a half games behind Atlanta in the NL East standings.

(03:00) A quick message from Tim about supporting the podcast.

(06:00) Daylen Lile did not get the start, but changed the game with his pinch-hit opportunity in the bottom of the 7th.  Blake Butera loaded up a right-handed heavy lineup against Philadelphia ace Jonathan Sanchez, but then switched it up as the game continued.

(12:00) Why did Butera go with Lile over Wood in the 7th? Wood then hit Chaparro immediately after Lile's homer in the 7th.  Chaparro tied the game in the 5th with a solo homer.

(22:00) Jackson Kent allowed three runs in five innings of work, but he also issued three walks.

(27:00) Yovanny Cruz retired all five batters that he faced in his 2nd appearance since getting called back up last week. Erik Tolman took the mound in the top of the 9th and notched his 3rd save of the season.

(30:00) Cade Cavalli's next start was pushed to Friday in St. Louis and it will be a bullpen game on Wednesday vs. the Phillies.

I'm joined by Washington Nationals insider Mark Suckerman of natchjournal.com. He is at Nationals Park. Washington versus Philadelphia. We did not get a favorable result in that match up by the commanders game at the Eagles

this past Sunday. But we did get a favorable result in that match up by what happened at Nationals Park on Tuesday evening. The Nats now have won four consecutive games. A six three win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Nationals Park on Tuesday evening in game one of a two game series. The Nats now are 71 and 81 with a run differential of plus six fillies now at 83 and 68 with a run differential of plus 28. A lot to get to with this game. But before we go any further, a special message from the creator owner and executive producer of this podcast Tim showvers Tim take it away. Hey nats chat Tim showvers here hard to believe. But we are almost through with our sixth season of coverage. We've been with you after every single Washington Nationals game since the 2021 season. As I do in every single September, we do have a end of season donation option here with the podcast as we are planning on coming back for season number seven in 2027 whenever opening day might be.

And let me walk through those steps for you. It's rather simple. If you go to computer natschatpodcast.com, click on merch. And it will send you to the donate now button. And the steps are simple from there. Any questions please email us natschatpodcasts.gemo.com. So again, natschatpodcast.com, click on merch at the top. Of the homepage and then you'll see the donate now button from there. And for this year's version of this convo, I'm going to be a bit more heavy handed than normal. The local sports media scene right now in this day and age, not what it used to be. And guys like us, we're running out every single ground ball if you catch my drift. So if you want top notch coverage of your local team, especially non NFL, well, you know, we're fighting against the current a bit. So just keep that in mind when going to support the podcast, we truly appreciate your help and all the listeners ship. It goes a long way. And also, of course, we have t-shirts.

You can get those the same way as the donate now button. Click on the website and merch. And then instead of the donate now button, you scroll down and you see options to buy our red and blue t-shirts. So again, natschatpodcast.com, click on merch. You'll see the donate now button. You scroll down a little further. You see the t-shirt button. And that's the way to help out this show. All while I have you all here, Walter's end of season party Friday night October 2nd, 7 to 9 p.m. Al, mark it myself. We'll be there ready to chat and hear what you think about this season. Talk about next season. And there's a lot to get to after this very up and down 2026 campaign for the nationals. So we'll see you again on Friday, October 2nd, 7 to 9 p.m. at Walters just across the street from Nationals Park. Now back to the show. All right, Tim. Thank you. So this 6-3 nats win over the Phillies at Nationals Park on Tuesday evening.

The nats shockingly had neither James Wood nor CJ Abrams in the starting lineup due to the nats facing left-handed Phillies starting pitcher Christopher Sanchez, who has been outstanding. This season had struggled a bit lately, but overall the body worked this season so good. He has been especially good against lefties. Also, the nats did not have Dalyl in their starting lineup. So no wood, no Abrams, no Lyle. And yet the nats got to Christopher Sanchez, who officially allowed five runs in six and a third innings. The nats for this game, six runs, nine hits, which were two home runs, three doubles and four singles, two walks, three for five with runners in scoring position. And I mentioned Dalyl and Lyle. He came off the bench to pinch it and play left field. He went one for one with a three run homer, Lyle in the nats, three run seventh, a one out first pitch, three run homer, to right center field for a six-three nats lead. The homer came on the first pitch from right-handed Phillies reliever Jonathan Bowlin

off him coming into the game. As nats manager Blake Butterra, very interestingly, went with Lyle over James Wood and CJ Abrams as a pinch hiter. Now butterra during his post game press conference revealed that Abrams is dealing with neck tightness. Had CJ in there, but he came up with a little bit of neck tightness. The decision to go with Lyle, certainly over wood, we then pinch it in the next play to parents, but struck out, worked out so well. We've talked so much about the nats new process. What a banner evening for the nats process. And Mark, what an interesting, fascinating game this ended up being from a nats offensive standpoint. You know, we haven't had a lot of these here lately, a legitimately well-played, very interesting compelling baseball game n1 that of course they came out on top against a good opponent like that. There was some real strategy to this and some really interesting decisions both in terms of who was in the starting lineup, but then how it was going to play out over the course of the rest of the game. And I want to give them some credit here. I like a lot of people

when I saw the line have come out and it came out pretty late. I was thinking to myself, what's going on here? Exactly. Is this just about the matchups? I get that Sanchez is a lot better against lefties than righties, but you're going to sit through your top three hitters arguably. Like, is there anything else going on here? Well, with Abrams there was, it sounds like he probably would have been in the lineup and then they scratched him because the neck tightness doesn't appear to be anything serious and should play on Wednesday. So, you know, take that for what it's worth. And then he did want to give James Wood a night off anyways. He played every game since coming off the IL. Obviously a tough matchup against Sanchez. So he figured, okay, here's a chance to give him that day off. And then Lyle again, the matchup things you end up with eight right handed bats in the lineup against Sanchez against whom they've had some success this year, by the way. That's now 13 runs 25 hits for the Nationals in 21 and 2-3 innings against the guy who might win the NL side young. So they have experience against him and they've seen how their

right handed hitters can have success against him and it's absolutely worked out for them and never more so than in this game. But what I loved about that all, you know, we tend to focus so much on who's in the starting lineup. And I think as we've learned this year, it's not just about who's in the lineup, but then who's available later on to pinch hit when certain matchups come up. And you could see that butarid knew exactly how he wanted to do this. He knew eventually Sanchez is going to be out of the game. Don Madden is going to go to a right handed reliever at some point. And now he's got maybe the best bench in baseball at his disposal with a multitude of quality options. And so he had his choice of how to go about that. And it worked out beautifully for them. And so I want to give butarid on a Columbia. Everybody else was involved in making out those lines and making those decisions. I want to give him the credit for it because what I'm sure a lot of people saw in the afternoon that made them question what in the world is teams doing. It really did pay off in the end. They had a plan. They stuck with it and it worked. Well, and at what point do people stop questioning and

just start giving a benefit of the doubt? I mean, look, I'm not here to tell you that this front office has, you know, batted a thousand. Okay, the front office just got here. Like, let's give it some time before we really start passing full definitive judgment. But in terms of what this new regime has done from an offensive standpoint this season. Like, I think it's time to give them a benefit of the doubt. You mentioned Columbia and butaripol to bony. Like, this is what these guys have been doing all season long. This has been the bright spot of this season. This offense, the process, the way the nets have approached doing offense, the success that this team has had against opposing starting pictures. I mean, how well prepared is this team been time and again against opposing starting pictures? So yeah, like it was odd when that lineup came out and it did get a little confusing because we didn't know that Abrams essentially was not available. So I think that does kind of change the way you view things a little bit. We didn't know that butera wanted to give James Wood the night off. And I'm assuming that this was done strategically. The nets didn't want us to know these things because the nets didn't want the Phillies to know these things. And that's wanted the Phillies to think that Abrams might be deployed as a pinch hitter. But yeah, I mean,

we have seen this with this team this season. And I just I love seeing this. I think, you know, there are nits to pick with the new regime. But I think the overall body of work in terms of what has been done this season has been way more good than bad. And I thought that Tuesday evening was such an example of that. Now, why do you think that butera went with Lyall overwood in that spot against Bolin? Now, would like I said did strike out in the next plate appearances of pinch hitter. But that was interesting in and of itself. Lyall overwood. What do you think the thinking was there? Yeah, I was fascinated by that as well. You could see that inning playing out and I keep looking down the dugout. Okay, who's got a bad? Who's got a helmet? How are they going to do all this? Are they going to pinch it for crews at all? That's not something they've done very much this year. They've kind of let him go ahead and hit for himself against righties. And so that was in itself a bit of a bold move. The logic and I think this is actually interesting. And in the moment, I wasn't necessarily thinking to this. It's second and third once Nassim Nunez gets his sack bunded down. So second and third nobody out. You can send wood up there. But is there a chance that

the fill is just intentionally walking and try to set before south anywhere and bring Lyall now to the plate instead. Now maybe that would have worked as well. But but he's there as logic was they're more likely to pitch to Lyall than they are to pitch to wood. And if they do walk Lyall, well now the base is allotted for wood and there's nowhere to put him. So the thinking was I've got two pinch hit opportunities here. I'm kind of saving the big boy for the second one in case it gets to him. And let's also be clear here. Dale and Lyall is no slouch as an option there. And arguably at the moment is even a better choice because he's been red hot over the last almost month now. And so you can even make the case that you'd rather have Lyall than wood or Abrams just given the way all three of those guys are playing right now. So again, that was one there was certainly thought that went into it. And it was trying to figure out how is Don Mattingley going to approach this. And what gives me my best chance of having two guys who get to swing the bat and not giving them

an opening to intentionally walk someone and then have maybe a lesser hitter at the plate. Yeah, it is so interesting. Like we've been saying now, Daly Lyall is worth pointing out he is not having a good September. His August was really good. His September stats might actually surprise some people. His slash line for September batting average 154 on base percentage 214 slugging percentage 359. And we kind of just assumed, hey, Daly Lyall is going to take off and surge the rest of the season is overall work in September has not been that. But last few games he has done well and a big home run in this game on Tuesday evening, Lyall now at 21 home runs and an OPS of 739. And getting back to the Nats against Christopher Sanchez, Andre's Shapiro home in this game. He was in that starting DH and upper two batter two for three with a solo home and a double to get picked off at second base, but Joparo in the Nats one run fifth two out solo home to center field off Christopher Sanchez to tie the game at three. The home are going a project at 422 feet per stat cast.

Joparo now at the major league level in this regular season OPS of 873 has any Nats hitter been better in the post all store break portion of this season than Andre's Shapiro. Yo, Andy Yo, Yo, Morales. He is in that starting first baseman and upper four batter one for three with an RBI double Morales in the Nats two run first to two out hustle RBI double to shallow center field off. Yes, Christopher Sanchez on a one two pitch to tie the game at one Brady house. He is in that starting third baseman and upper three batter one for three with a double and a walkhouse in the Nats two run first to two out first pitch double down the left field line and off the side wall. The double came off Christopher Sanchez and by the way, House ended the game with a great leaping backhanded catch of a liner by JT real Mudo, but the Shapiro Morales House all getting the Christopher Sanchez. Sanchez wins above replacement per baseball reference is 7.6. I mean, like you said, this guy may well win the National League side young award and the Nats very much got to him in this game.

Just so good to see what the Nats did here. And you know, I look at this game. You're facing the Phillies you figure you're going to have to score some runs to win this game. The Nats held the Phillies the three runs will get to that, but the offense very much the leading force in terms of why the Nats won this game. And just good quality at bats up and down the lineup, even the ones that weren't hits Dylan Cruz leads off the game very first pitch 407 feet to center field and unfortunately hit it to like the one spot in the park where 407 won't clear the fence easily could have been a lead off Homer for him. The Shapiro Homer did go 407 just a little bit further to the right. So he had some room to spare on that one. The one lefty in the lineup, Jorby Beeboss, RBI single in the first inning. By the way, Jorby Beeboss has been kind of good here in the last few weeks for all the criticism and it's been well founded, but he's actually performed pretty well for them now for several weeks. But you just saw good quality of bats all around and it felt like they were not intimidated at all facing Sanchez. And I gave you the numbers earlier again four starts against him

now this year. 13 runs in 21 and 2 thirds innings 25 hits. So more hits than innings pitched, you know, I don't have the ERA in front of me. That works out to like a five or six ERA that he's had against them. So they feel confident against him. They're right handed hitters in particular. I know Andrew Pinkney didn't do much against Sanchez in this game. But remember, he hit his first career Homer in Philadelphia off Christopher Sanchez. So there was a body of work there for these guys going into it. And I think that carried over into this game and they felt good about their chances. And the other part of it was just knowing if you can get him out of the game and now the Philly's bullpen, which has not been great by the way. And knowing the lefties you have now have off the bench, that you were going to probably win those matchups late in the game. So this was a good job both of getting to Sanchez in terms of scoring off him, but also just getting him out of the game. I know you say six and a third innings like that's in today's day and age is a lot, but this is a guy who has gone seven eight innings with some regularity this year. So even just getting him up to the 90

pitchmark in the seventh inning, I think was important in now allowing them to get the favorable matchups they wanted against the Philly bullpen. How about by the way that hustle RBI double by YoYo Morales Sanchez delivers. So I'm going to loop her up the middle. That's going to fall in for a base in the shallow center field. House will come in and score Morales trying for two. The throw from Hill is high and some Morales slides in beat first and second with a hustle double. If you didn't watch the game, that looked like a bloop single. That was hit to shallow center and Morales winds up at second base. What a job by Morales who continues to impress since being called up to the majors OPS of 900. You know, you look at him. I mean, he's not exactly a speed demon at least when you examine him visually, but man, he motored on that play. Yeah, he's a big boy. And you're not necessarily expecting him to be the one to do that, but he read the play really well. It was a close play, almost in danger of getting himself thrown out there. But, you know, Blake P. Tara mentioned that before the game, he was trying to highlight to his position players,

the good things they did over the weekend against the Angels. And there were several of those hustle plays. CJ Abrams had some of them, Dylan Cruz busting down the line, several others. And he kind of wanted to emphasize that, say, keep playing this way, this style of baseball. Look for extra bases everywhere. You can get them play the game hard. And I think Morales took that to heart and did a nice job in turning that into a double. And there were several others in this game. This really might have been their best played game as a team in a while, especially given the opposition and everything else that happened over the remainder of the game from the pitching staff. standpoint, this was just a really well played entertaining and ultimately successful baseball game for them. Yeah, this was an ads first game since being officially eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday. So yes, this officially is a seventh consecutive season in which the ads do not make the postseason, but the ads came out and played a very nice game in this win on Monday evening. Euclinc driving past how's down the left field line at a foul ground overrun by Pekney

as turners in the score arise heads for second and in there without a play Pekney coming over to the side wall and foul ground at that ball get by him but I think arise was heading for second anyway and so the Phillies have tied the game on a ball slice the other way by arise inside the third base line. So the NAS starting pitcher and this 6-3 win over the Phillies at Nationals Park on Tuesday evening was Jackson Kent and he again did that do so well. He allowed three runs in five innings he gave up four hits which were home run a double and two singles he issued three walks and a wild pitch four strikeouts through a good number strikes 88 pitches 58 strikes 30 balls but once again just a lot of traffic with Kent on the mount top of the first a lot of run on a single two walks and a wild pitch top of the third a lot of run on a double and a single and the issue to walk and top of the fifth a lot of as he gave up a little off homer by ex net Kyle Schwarber to right field for a three two Phillies lead despite having had Schwarber down in the count at 1.12 Schwarber of course since leaving the

NAS has killed the NAS and you look at Jackson Kent now so we're now at more than a month since the NAS on August 12th announced having selected the contractive Kent from Triple A Rochester seven games all starts ERA 640 whip 1.76 walks per nine innings 6.40 I mean that is a staggeringly high walks per nine innings we've talked about this like he issues too many walks that is the principle issue right now with Jackson Kent and I think what's unfortunate is that of the seven games just one has been good that game against the Miami Marlins the other six I mean they haven't been all like awful but you know the other six really have not impressed you yeah now in his defense I will say this he's made starts now against the Cubs the Dodgers the Padres and the Phillies so those are some tough assignments as opposed to say the Marlins who he did do well again so maybe his next few could come against a little lesser opponents maybe we'll get a little better sense of it but overall he keeps falling behind in the count is the big thing the walks I mean

there were two two out walks by him in this game in the first three innings and that's never a good thing he had success against the bottom of the lineup but couldn't really do it against the top of that lineup again admittedly a big name line up there ultimately he got through five innings he gave them a chance so you know I'll give him a little bit of credit for that but he just doesn't really look like a polished big league starter at this point doesn't mean he can't become one he's probably here sooner than he should have been but he's gonna have to figure out how to get ahead in the count how to keep the pitch count down and limit the walks and what's so unusual is that this is not who he was in the minors and I think that's what's baffling to a lot of people because he had a reputation as someone who attacked hitters got ahead in the count posted a lot of strikeouts was not a high walk guy and since reaching the big leagues outside of that one game that is who he's been and I think that part's a little confounding I think he understands that he's just got to essentially trust that this is the same sport that he's playing here no matter who the names are in the back of

those jerseys he can still have success if he trusts that his arsenal is good enough when he puts it over the plate and so that's that critical next step for him to take if he's gonna stick up here in the long run well he is gaining valuable experience and I think the realistic hope would be okay whatever happens the rest of this season happens he begins next season in the minors and then inevitably when the nats need to call up a starting pitcher if he's the guy he's better for having gone through what he's going through this season I mean I think that's what you look at there are so many examples of pitchers who in season number one are really bad and then the next season or a lot better or two seasons afterwards or a lot better hopefully with you know this guy doesn't take you know many years but I think there is something to be said for get the bad baseball out of you and then your next go round at the major league level you know you're better for having gone through that and maybe we see a better version of Jackson Kent but while he struggled in this game the nats relief pitching did not the bullpen in this game did well four nats relievers combined for four scoreless innings my friend Yolvani crews one and two thirds perfect innings on just 18

pitches 11 strikes seven balls the DeVilo working per stat cast average four scene fastball velocity of a hundred point three miles per hour that over six four scene fastballs Richard love lady look good he retired three the four batters he faced in the three batters with the Phillies numbers one through three batters in the three X nats call Schwarber trade turner and Bryce Harper now love lady top of the eight they give up a two out double by Luis arise down the right field line but Brad Lord put out the fire he retired the only batter he faced and Eric Tolman tossed a perfect top of the ninth for the save with the game ending as mentioned via that terrific catch by Brady house but I mean this was the concern right this nats bullpen against this Phillies lineup but crews love lady Lord and Tolman coming through how many of you out there even at six three after the Lyle Homer were confident that would hold up the final score of this game no you did not not one of you actually believed that would be the final score of the game so

yes huge props to the bullpen the two I want to highlight here that I think we're most significant within the course of this game Giovanni Cruz hey you've been touting them I've been kind of pointing out the who cares how hard you throw if you can't throw strikes guess what he threw strikes in this game good for him he got ahead of hitters 11 of the 18 pitches for strikes he threw the fast ball four strikes I was really glad to see that he did say that in his limited time at AAA that he was working on some things and came back with more confidence in that pitch that was great to see in what was still a tie game at that point so that was some important at bats against some good hitters that was that was good to see and then Brad Lord this has not been a good stretch for him especially in high leverage spots and he winds up coming into a big one with two outs and the runner on second now he fell behind in the count to Alec Bome but he battled back got to three two and got the ground ball to end the inning and then I was glad that Blake Peter just pulled him after that and went to Tolman in the ninth let Brad Lord walk off the mound feeling good about himself

for the first time in a little while he needed that one I think love lady you know I think we can all question like what we're getting out of this from him pitching high leverage spots is late in the season but good on him he got the out he needed to and Tolman I guess he's their closer now it's by default but he has shown for the most part an ability to handle that role without too much trouble and I mean how nice was it to see a one two three ninth inning and across the board for scoreless settings from the Nats ball pen with zero walks that is huge we know how big a problem that's been all year long yeah and especially that ninth inning move quickly you know when we see these nets relievers labor that's when you know you're in trouble we did not have that in this game Yavani Cruz like I said one and two third scoreless hitless innings perfect innings just 18 pitches told me did what he did over just 13 pitches in that ninth inning to get the save so the Nats have a shot at a two game sweep of the Phillies game two of this series at Nassauville's park

Wednesday evening at 645 Kade Cavali was supposed to be the Nats starting pitcher for this game but he will not be the Nats are going with relief pitcher Jared Simpson as their probable starting pitcher for the game what will be a bullpen game so so much for the Nats not having a bullpen game in this go round with the rotation and the Nats have an off day on Thursday and so pretty clearly this is just an opportunity to get Kade Cavali some more rest right yeah there was nothing wrong with him he didn't ask for any more time off they just said it's been a long year they thought about trying to get him three more starts by keeping them on a true five day schedule and I think somebody said hang on a second is that really necessary he is built up his workload he has done such a great job this year one extra start is not going to make or break this season for him let's give him a couple extra days give him two more starts send him home happy and feeling great about the year that he had so I know you and I were both really interested to see him face the Phillies because that's a compelling matchup for him at this late stage of the season but I understand why they've

cited it really wasn't worth you know pushing that to happen too much and so we will see how the bullpen game goes they did great in the four innings they pitching this one can you count on nine quality innings from them I don't know it's going to be a tough assignment and then hats have another tough assignment facing Zach Wheeler from an offensive standpoint so cards are probably stacked against them on Wednesday but you know what this team is one fornero they've all been come from behind wins really when you think back to the west coast trip there were what four games that they should have won three games with blown saves they should have won they actually have aside from those late meltdowns played some pretty good baseball against good competition here lately so maybe they still have that in them and can stave off for another day clinching the losing record they've been on 81 losses for a while now we keep waiting to declare seven straight losing season they're not there yet they're still theoretically have a chance to finish 81 and 81 I don't think that's going to happen but it is still mathematically possible well could at least get to 80 wins 10 games left I

mean you'd have to really do well but it's not impossible I think it's also unfortunate with this Cavali decision is that instead of his next outing being a home game it will be on the road it'll be game one of this three game series at the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night so you know I do feel for especially that season ticket holders instead of getting cade Cavali on Wednesday evening you're getting a bullpen game but that is the nature of the beast and so we'll see how the nets do in that game and like I said off day on Thursday then a road trip six game road trip three games at St. Louis three games at the Detroit Tigers and then just one series left home to the New York Metz the weekend of the 25th through the 27th and that'll be it for the nets this season hit us up on X that Nats underscore chat you could find us on blue sky at nats chat podcast you can email the show nats chat podcast at gmail dot com we have a website you can check out to natschat podcast dot com at which you can purchase a nats chat podcast t-shirt all nats it'll radio highlights on nats chat or courtesy of 1067 the fan for more equipment on our goldie thank you for listening and we'll talk
