America leads the world in medicine development. It matters. We get new medicines first, nearly
three years faster. Five million Americans go to work because we make medicines here at home,
and not relying on other countries keeps us safe. But China is racing to overtake us.
Will we let them? Or will we choose to stay ahead? When America leads, America cures.
Let's tell Washington to keep us in the lead.
Learn how at america cures dot com. Pay for by farma. Well, for just the third time in
franchise history, your Miami, Marlins are three and oh, and they did it in dramatic fashion
on Sunday afternoon to sweep the rocky Steven strom here. Marlins rewind. What a game it was.
Oh, and Casey walks it off for the recap. Here's Jack McMullen.
When unbelievable way to finish this first weekend of the regular season, you can't
script the start for Owen Casey any better than this. This guy came off the bench as a pinch hitter
in the back third of the game to open the bottom of the eighth Owen Casey bounces out to second base.
And Owen Casey who began his career through the front two going four for eight. His began his
career in a Marlins uniform drills a walkoff to run a homer to get a win for three over the Colorado
Rockies. Again, it is a sweep. The Marlins are three and oh, to begin a year for the first time
since 2009, just the third time in the history of this franchise. And Owen Casey is a budding star.
Unbelievable. Thank you so much for joining us. This was a game that I just seemed interesting at
the outset. You know, the Marlins, they got seven innings out of Sandial Contra on opening night.
They got seven innings out of Yuri Perez in game two. And Max Meyer goes five innings today.
And it seemed like it was a laborious five at points five innings at three run ball. But then
Tyler Phillips looks locked in out of the Marlin bullpen two scoreless innings. John King is
scoreless sitting. Michael Peterson is scoreless sitting. This game was three two after the second
inning. And it stayed there until the bottom of the ninth, but Owen Casey drills that walk off
to run home run so much to get to including the highlights. Stephen was standing by with Xavier
Edwards moments ago. We will take our first break when we come back. You'll hear Stephen and X
and we'll play the highlights. That's coming up next on the Marlins radio network.
What a W for the fight and fish. They're the fight and fish for a reason. And on the day that the
teal makes its return, they embody that fight and fish mentality that they've had since this
organization came to be in 1993. Just incredible stuff in the Marlins. Get a four three win because
of Owen Casey's walkoff to run Homer. This is not the case without a lead off single from Xavier
Edwards. X set the tone and I know that he was doubled up earlier in the inning, but Xavier
Edwards was locked in all game long. In the seventh spot, he was two for three Xavier Edwards,
one of the leaders of this group. And he was standing by with Stephen Strom after the game.
X, what do you think of your new two mate Owen Casey? Yeah, he's been unbelievable for us.
So we're going to really have that big at bat really across the board there putting pressure on him.
Yeah, proud of this team. We weren't out of it. We had some good bats at night thinning and Owen came
through for us. How about the shift of emotions? You're on first base. You think Hixie's going to
probably plate you and then you get doubled up. Yeah, I mean, I know that I do there. Unfortunately,
if that ball goes over his head, I'm scoring for sure. And we might have walked off even earlier,
but yeah, I mean, great at bats across the board at night. I kept the pressure on and
here we are with the win. It's all over your locker. The fight and fish. How did you guys display
that here today? Yeah, I mean, not our cleanest game by any means. Probably our sloppiest of the
year, honestly, but yeah, we kept fighting. You know, we didn't, didn't bow out of this one and
we just kept our head down and kept going to work. So yeah, really proud of this group of the
working put in next. Thanks for the time, man. Go celebrate. Sure. Thanks for having me.
All right, that was Stephen and Xavier Edwards after this fourth three win for the
Marlins on top of the Colorado Rockies. How did this game sound? Well, let's give it to you.
Scoring opened in the top of the first inning, pretty much right away. Max Meyer, he was filling
up the strike zone, but sometimes he was over the heart of the plate. It resulted in a single
for Goodman. He did walk, Willie Castro, TJ Rumpfield, he drew a walk as well after a tough
at bat. And then Jordan back, the Rocky Six hitter. He cleared them all.
Working back to the wall and its short hops off the wall. Marcy flying around third. He comes in
in plenty of time and Otto Lopez is aboard with an RBI double. Otto gets the fish on the board.
It's three one in the bottom of the first. Well, you just heard the Otto Lopez double to make
it three one, but Jordan Beck did have a basis clearing double down the third base lines,
who was three nothing Rockies at the outset. Otto with that double made it three to one in the
bottom of the first. And then how about a career first for Davis and Delo Santos. After a
lead off knock from Xavier Edwards in the home second, Davis and made this a memorable first big
league hit. Read to again, Davis and he hits one out to center field and deep. He got Doyle
working back. He leaps up and he's off his glove. It hits against the wall. X had to hold. He
will push the third, but that should be a double for Davis and Delo Santos's first major league
hit. He's stung it out the straightaway central. So Davis and Delo Santos put runners at second
and third with his first hit. It was a 106 mile an hour double to straightaway center field.
Then a productive out from one of the newest Marlins Austin Slater. One one pitch Slater hits high
in the air out the straightaway right. This should be plenty deep enough back hearing up for a throw
home again. He slips as he tries to fire a ground ball to the plate. It's picked up by
Rumsfield and both runners will tag and push forward. So Slater has himself his first RBI in a
Marlin uniform. X scores from third and Davis and pushes to third. So that was the sacrifice
fly to make it three to and that's where we held for a really long time. Thanks in large part to
what the bullpen did. It was Max Meyer who went five innings of three run ball. You had a scoreless
inning from John King. A scoreless inning from Michael Peterson. But before those two guys Tyler
Phillips. He started off his season on a high note. One two again. That one chased. It was a sweeper
off the plate away. And Tyler Phillips strands two. They were both in scoring position and Philly is
through two scoreless innings in his season debut. So Tyler Phillips. He got six outs today. Again
King got three Peterson got three. And then we got to the bottom of the ninth with the score still at
three to two Xavier Edwards. He ripped a ground ball up the middle for a lead off knock. But then
such a frustrating out a double play ball off the battle. Liam Hicks. It was a screaming liner
that somehow former Marlin Troy Johnson cut at first base. He then walked into the bag to double
up X. So with two men gone to the bases empty. It came down to Javier Sonoha and a misplay in left
field from Jake McCarthy allowed the ball to sail over his head and to hop the wall in left center.
Sonoha was at second. He was the tying run. But Owen Casey was the go ahead run. And this is where
the magic happened. One oh pitch. Casey launches high in the air at the right. And it's gone.
You can't make this up. The maple master secures the sweep.
And for the first time since 2009 the Marlin starting year 3 and 0. A walk up to run shot for
Owen Casey. That's how this would sound it folks. Owen Casey the hero today.
Unbelievable. When we come back you'll hear from the skipper Clayton McCullough will give you an
out of town scores check as well. Lots of come here on the 10th inning showing on the Marlins
radio network. All right, Jack. Thank you. Let's head down to listen to what Marlins manager Clayton
McCullough had to say. Wow.
Baseball can be such a cruel game at times and you get the lead off guy on you feel good and you
get a bullet right at Troy. Nothing ex could do there. You know, and then Sonoha keeps it going and
and Owen. So I think it just obelies signs that our group will be very similar to what we've seen
from them last year that they're just never going to get in there. Hang in the game. Keep taking
your shots and it doesn't always work out that way. I think that just again they're this group
again kind of creating their own identity a little bit. This is a new year but the same type of
mentality that just the resiliency and just go take a good at bat and well, you know, and yeah,
what a great start for him, you know, couldn't be happier. Do you feel like a momentum shift after
that first inning or the first of the year, obviously the run back and then Myers settled in.
It was the even our first couple of times through the lineup, you know, the first couple
when he's able to get one back there and after a long inning for Max, but we were to put pressure on
Quintana, stress him. You know, at least get a run. You're back in it second inning. We do the same
thing. We had a really a really outstanding inning going there. Get another run. So that was
a big part of the game to kind of, you know, it was still so early and they like to build a chip
away, but also I think he was a, you know, in the 60s maybe after a couple innings. So it allowed
yeah, it allowed Max to settle in a little bit and he got into a much better, like seeing got
a better sync, better rhythm there. The last, you know, few innings and he did his part to, you
know, rebound from, you know, a shaky first to then get us to a point. At least, you know, you get
through five. You keep the game where it is there and, you know, you give the group a chance to
do what we did at the end. Just with a younger group, I probably was able to see it a lot last year.
What goes into instilling that in a younger group? Maybe coming up or not knowing what
would have to be able to show them that until the final off recorded that shot? Was it into instilling
still that? I think we just have so many members that were a part of our crew last year and I think,
you know, they saw that and they took a lot of pride in that that, you know, no matter, you know,
how a particular game maybe starts or the middle part or you just played all, you always played out
and, you know, those that, you know, that are new to our team this year, though, on the other
side against us. I think, you know, they saw that last year and as, you know, you get to know them
and speak to them like, you know, it's, you remember playing you guys and it was, you know,
it was going to be a fight all the way to the end. And so I think then it's, you know,
easier they come in and just, you know, take to that as well. And I think again, our guys in
there take a lot of, a lot of pride in just being really tough and just playing out that day's
game for what it is and, you know, it really, it bodes well for us.
What do you see from Meyer in those
endings to do by that approach that they won? Yeah, I think he just, he just, he's a good first
start of the season and he just seemed really, really out of sync early on. And, you know,
because we got, we got some runners on and he was, you know, he's been working hard trying to,
you know, alter his times to the plate and he's like, he just kind of was a little bit out of
rhythm there and he wasn't striking with a slider like, you know, he normally can and gotten
into some really bad counts early. But I think then once, you know, he got through a couple
innings and it seemed, you know, just slow down a little bit now and you just go out there and
just pitch and execute. And, you know, he was able to, you know, really not always salvage,
you know, being a solid outing from, from the start. So I think it just, the first
ending for a starter in general sometimes is the toughest one. You know, it's your first one of
the season and, you know, really proud of how he just hung in there and on a day when certainly
didn't have his best command, probably didn't have his best execution and stuff that he was able to,
you know, hold him down for, you know, for five innings.
You're able to talk some Peterson or end the bolt end of the hole.
Yeah, I mean, they really were terrific big mic today. I mean, those were some, you know,
some big time heaters that he, that he threw today and the job John King did to hold it there.
We get, you know, Phillips, a couple innings, a second inning was big. You get a couple guys
on the start the inning and again, to, you know, to pitch out of that to keep it where it was.
I think they all did their part just passing it along and keeping us, giving us a chance to come
back. So really good start and totality from our pitching staff over three days. So credit to them.
Are you going to know for the, for the first time since 2009, just how much fun are you guys having
right now? Yeah, I mean, it is. It's always winnings a lot better than losing and it is, I mean,
you look, it's, we got a hundred and what, 59 games left. But, you know, it's certainly nice to
come out and, you know, I really, for the most part of our three days play well. We've had some,
some hiccups and some areas, but to be able to hang in there and just rebound from any of those.
And I think, you know, and we've had, I feel like really good at bats as a whole and maybe
didn't cash in on some of the chances we had. But there was a lot, so many good things and to be
able to come out on top and, you know, three really close, tightly contested games come back today.
Good start.
Yeah, I mean, it is. It can, you know, it's a great thing about our sport in baseball. So much of it
is rooted in the history of, you know, of the game, you know, and it's, you know, America's
past time for reason. And for this organization, you know, this T.O. uniform is a, you know,
a big part of the history of, of the organization. It's some really important, impactful moments
of have occurred wearing these. And Carson and I were joking, you know, getting to the bottom of
the ninth like, you know, hey, Griff, you know, this would be, I think Griff's going to come up here
and maybe, you know, walk it off. That would be something else. And you know, Casey didn't give him a chance.
Hey, what's the end of this is debut today? Would you see, especially in that verse at that?
Yeah. I mean, well, wouldn't it bad? I mean, he did. He fouled off. He spoiled so many pitches that
he got off some good swings on some, like, some mistakes fouled off and then to really, you know,
drive a ball to the big part of the field. You know, in Contana, certainly someone who can,
you know, he moves the ball around and can keep you off balance. But, you know, Delos,
that was a really, you know, mature at bat, especially for your first one. And, you know,
in the big leagues to take where it's very, you know, very easy. You go up there and just,
you know, the anxiety, the adrenaline that you're feeling. But he, I think he was able to really
slow himself down and just got into the bat and really battled, fouled off a lot of pitches.
And, and came through. Yeah, you look forward, Casey, did he, I think he was one thing,
there was any conversation to... Yeah, I don't know if he was, you know,
trying to set up like a Kirk Gibson type moment today or, uh, I think it was, you know, he can't,
I think he just, when he came out of the box, rolled his ankle a little bit and I didn't,
once, you know, he got through and ran it off. He, you know, he was fine. But, yeah, there was, uh,
it looked a little strange, you know, all could run into first.
Obviously, he didn't share the beginning, but he studied after it, so I think the hobby was, uh,
seven, five or seven days, he's first bringing him, what is his income, and then that.
Yeah, I mean, as you would see from hobby is, you know, we feel like he's,
always felt great when he's up there that, you know, he's going to, most likely, move the ball forward
and it doesn't, you know, right left and I think the moments like that at the end, you know,
we've seen, you know, hobby a lot, you know, in the last year plus, really come up with some,
some big at bats and hits in those moments, I think, you know, sometimes when the lights are
brightest and that, he just has a knack for, you know, I think relishing that and he's come through
so many times, so it doesn't surprise me and, you know, great for him, he's, you know, he's all
to a good start really on, you know, both sides of the ball and, uh, you know, I think it's kind of,
we come to, come to expect when he comes up into a big spot that you feel great about, you know, him
being up there. Safe to say KC, he'll be in the lineup tomorrow. Yes. Let's hear from the hero.
Owen Casey, after delivering the walkoff home run. Oh, and I feel like every kid
imagines, yeah, right walkoff home run to win a game. Was it what you imagined as a kid going up?
Uh, I mean, I kind of blacked out, so I don't really know. I don't know if kids imagine that, but, um,
no, it was awesome. Yeah, to get the W and, you know, get the sweepers great. What were you looking for in the
event? Um, I was just telling, telling Hixie that I like was pre-setting my hands because I had
this like waggle, right? And I was, I pre-set my hands back because he's so quick to play. Now I was
just looking for something middle and he threw, I think it was a change up. So yeah, just middle and
beyond time. He's so fast. Especially after, I guess, your previous at that, it was a bit of
re-bangle with it and just pressuring with how the bat went and then it come through the way.
Oh, no, I rolled my ankle when I, um, like I turned roll-mankel a bit and I just,
I don't know, hurts. I kind of like hollowed out a little bit, but no, I'm good. Um, I wasn't
frustrated with it. I mean, he made a good pitch and I swung at it and broke my bat. Yeah.
No, I mean, he kind of wished for moments like this and I just want to keep, you know,
putting good swings in the ball and I know that's not always going to be like this,
but, um, you know, if I continue to stay with my plan and, um, you know, I know good things are
going to happen. Yeah. Last season was a team that was always battling with the game. Yeah,
you're a part of it. Uh, just going to what have you learned about this group?
You know, I said before, like, we have a lot of fun and we play loose and relax. You know,
we're never out of it. I mean, how many barrels do we have in that inning? Four. Right? We're never
out of the game. So I mean, we really play with that, you know, intensity and, um, you know, we just
really have a lot of fun. You were a foreign, well, after I guess the two era. Yeah, I was born
2002. Yeah. So I guess thoughts on the look at how much, if at all, do you know, did Teal or the
history of the miles make it to Canada? Where you grew up? Um, no, but I mean, it looks great, right? So,
no, it looks awesome and, you know, to get a win on the day we debut them kind of like again,
is awesome. Yeah. Max Meyer five innings five hits, three runs, two walks, five punchouts.
Not his best start, but not a bad start. Kept his team in it. Let's hear what Meyer had to say
after the win. Uh, I think the first two innings, I was trying to, you know, be really slow with my
stuff, thinking I was going to have a lot of nerves, maybe, but I think it was like kind of the opposite,
where I was just way too nonchalant out there for the first of my arm, just wasn't on time. And
I looked at some video in like the third and mosque, obviously, saw it too, but he didn't,
it's not necessarily something you want to say about like mechanical issue in the middle of a game,
but I was just a little too, too, too much time at the top of my delivery and just kind of never
got my arm through. And then I was able to just pick up the pace a little bit. So I felt better
on, you know, the last last couple innings for sure. Specifically to you mentioned like the
delivery issue, but how did you really be able to change the mentality and say, okay,
are the delivery issues aside and figure it out again? Yeah. I mean, just thinking how long
the year is and it's okay with stuff that happens like that, but it's just keeping your team in
the game and giving them a chance to win. Obviously, I was fortunate that, you know, see, hit that walk
off for the team, too. And the relievers, you know, our pen is so good that we're never out of it, too.
So I was just pumped that I was able to give the team a chance to win after the bad first.
What was Clayton saying to you and the judge out there? We saw him like really close up into your
face after you got pulled. He was just saying, you know, good job. That's going to be it for you.
Way to keep us in the ballgame.
Yeah, everything felt good. Obviously like the fastball Villa was down in the first couple innings
and that's my mechanical issue. So, you know, Rob's not going to want to call fastball when you see
92 on the board, but I wanted it. So, that was more just slidering that stuff heavy, but I was
able to kind of fix it in. I'm going to work through that this week and should be ready to go.
Yeah, I mean, you can't really try to go seven, right? You just want to one out at a time and,
you know, obviously they're great pitchers. But yeah, my goal is just keep the team, give a chance
to win every single game. Don't let anything get out of hand. You know, our hitters are going to
chip away every single A, B. So, that's what fires me up and makes me stay in the game when they're
chipping away and putting a run up, putting another run up in the third. So, it was fun to just,
you know, still be in the game and make competitive pitches.
And with that, just the way that you guys showed the up last year, but basically, until the
final score is that you guys are in a game, seeing that basically all series. What does that do to
start a season when you guys are playing three games? Yeah. You win three close games.
I mean, that's what I feel like makes the team so special is you're never out of it with this team.
Every A, B is going to be chippy and we got a chance to burn you every single time. It doesn't
matter who's throwing. That was a really good closer. There was really hard three pitches and,
you know, we got them. So, you're never out of it. So, your job is a pitcher at least.
My mentality is just keep them in the game. You know, always have the pedal down.
From a mental standpoint, how have you changed your pitch? So,
the happy ability to have the first inning that you did and be able to make those in-game adjustments
and settle down the way that you did? Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what I'd be thinking back then
or whatever, but definitely try to be doing a little too much maybe. After knitting like that,
try to go and get some more punchouts or something, but I just wanted to make competitive pitches,
you know, being a little bit older and trying to just, like I said, keep the team in the fight.
So, I was happy with how I performed after kind of making a little bit of changes at the first.
Well, the Marlins will look to get to forno. On Monday night, it'll be Chris Patek will make
his Marlins debut going up against the Chicago White Sox 6.41 pitch from Lone Depot Park.
Make sure to come out. If not six o'clock, Marlins on deck WQAM. Make sure to check us out.
For Jack McMillan and Jeff Nelson, I'm Steven Tron. We will talk to you tomorrow, Marlins Nation.
