This episode is brought to you by Pemko Insurance and by PrizePix Matt. Welcome to week five of the NFL season. How are you doing now? Good morning. Good morning. They used to say, you know, after

the fourth game, like we're a court that's the first quarter of the season. And now there's not 16 games. So it's kind of hard to do the math for coaches. And so they're like, it's, you know, it's roughly it's kind of like a quarter, but like not really. And you know, it's really weird. It's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's weird that it's a seventh like a 17 game season. I mean, baseball's got 162. That's kind of weird. Like I don't know what that comes from, but but I just go back to the NFL lockout. I just go back to the NFL lockout. Like my generation of like player reps. We gave up so much like like fought so hard for that extra game. Like where's like no, it's not going to affect us. It's going to affect the future guys. And then they come in their next round and negotiating. They're like, hey, we'll give you a, you know, two less preseason games play another game. They're like, sure. Don't pay you more money. They're like, sure, I'll take the money. Like what? You know, I don't know, whatever. Kids, man. Kids. Yeah. It's, uh, yeah. That's another whole conversation. I'm actually, but yes, but what also happened is now we don't get to divide the season in

quarters and make it like real clean. Because for football players, first quarter, you know, first half, fourth quarter, like dig in, like it just makes so much sense. Like every workout that we ever did, you know, it was like 16 reps of gassars. And then you get to four more. They'd be like, fourth quarter. And then you're like, you give it everything you had. And then, you know, sometimes they'd outsmart you and they'd be like, the strength coach would be like, all right, overtime. Oh, man, what are you going to be tired when it's overtime? This is what we've got to be in our best best, you know, I feel like I feel like they should go a step further. They should make it the game like four and a half quarters. And they should make the field like 104 yards. Like let's just like make everything weird. Um, well, listen, when I said I would do this with you, for team impact, you'd promise there'd be no math on my end. So no, I'm out. Yeah, I do love. I love how Mike McDonald really also like in his post game speech said the quarter thing.

And then he's like, I knew immediately that he just Tony, it's a thing. We get some train. These coaches, like they're all half of their motivational speeches now. Or like they got to be tweaked. And they're like, you know, it's frustrating. Well, you know, it's good to see you this way. I also got to see you somewhat in person at the game on Sunday. I saw you were there. And presenting something to I think it was a military member on the field and got a little Seahawks chant going. So how was your trip back Seattle? It was great. It was short. I was, uh, I was in San Diego. And so I'm like, basically in Seattle, right? Right there. Like it sounds fine when you're planning, but no, it's nowhere near, you know, closer to basically in Tijuana. And like, I got ahead up to like basically Vancouver. So no, it was great. My wife met me up there. She was traveling. I was traveling. It just kind of worked out. The Seahawks do a great job with their legends community. I love hanging out with the older guys. I love hanging out with the guys that I played with. But like even like the Steve Largitz and the Jim Zorns and the Kurt Warner's and like,

it's just it's awesome to be with those guys. I was able to have breakfast with Lofa Kittupu. I was able to see guys that I absolutely love and, you know, blood with like Mac Strong. It's awesome. And to be in that stadium is Goosebumps every time. Marcus Truffont was honored for the work that he's doing off the, you know, off the field. The fun fact about it was a, it was a former, you know, someone who served in the Navy. Fun fact about that though. I'm getting ready to go down there. I'm going to give him an autograph football. We're going to do like the coin handshake exchange. And I said, hey, am I going to be saying anything? And they're like, no, there's no speaking whatsoever. And so the the in stadium host says something to me, but there's an echo when you're on the field. I have no idea what she said. And I'm, but I kind of like, did she just say we're going to do a sea ox chance? I wasn't 100% sure. That's what she said. So I took a risk, started the sea ox chant. The 12s answered, thankfully, appreciate you. But yeah, I wasn't confident in

the in the moment. What was going on? It all came across very naturally. So as usual, you nailed it. And, you know, it's helpful to talk to you about these games every week. But when you're in the stadium for this one, I think get a little different perspective. So first, well, that's the fun thing though. He's like, I feel like I'm missing the game when I'm at the game because like, I'm on the field, then I'm upstairs, then I'm over here. You know, my half time, I usually have a half-time routine. I had the opportunity to meet Neil Coleslaw, one of the new owners. And, you know, we're talking about his passion and like the idea, like all this stuff was like super fun. But like, oh, wait, it's like, there's a football game going on here. And I'm kind of missing it, you know, in all these great moments. So I've got to rewatch the game yesterday and then again today. And just I feel a lot better now. But after the game, I kind of was like, what the heck happened in this game? Yeah. Yeah. Well, now you set me on a different path. I do, you know, I've had a chance to meet Neil and Vinod and Nero as well. I'm curious, what was your impression of Nero Coastal, your first

conversation? Great. Humble, passionate, excited, you know, navigating this, this way, you know, like I think it's interesting. Like when you're at a quarterback in the NFL for the first time, you're trying to get direction on how to do it. There's there's other quarterbacks around the league that are sort of helpful. And they're like, hey, man, like here's my advice. Here's my experience. I'm not sure it's the same culture in the NFL. It's almost like I work a beating. One of my gonna tell you our secrets. I'm not gonna tell you how our organization does things. And so I don't know that there's like a playbook to follow. There's no like veteran quarterback in the room, so to speak. So, no, it was cool. I thought the humility was the thing that jumped off the page to me. And, you know, I just like basically I'm like, so like, who are you leaning on? I was like, well, I'm leaning on John Schneider and Chuck Arnold and that group. And they've been great. So it was exciting. I was not expecting it. It was pretty cool and it feels like the sea ox are in good hands. That's really, really good to hear. And now we can get to the game, which I think people left that game feeling all sorts of ways. I don't know if there's a win that in some ways,

people left more frustrated with, including Mike McDonald and the people in that locker, by the way, I always spoke to you after the game. What did you make of that game? Well, I don't think it's bad to win a game this way. And, you know, I, you know, my dad played for Bill Parcells, probably probably one of my dad's favorite coaches that he ever had. And, you know, I remember Parcells would say things when my dad was retired, like they'd hang out and stuff. And my dad would say things about his giant teams and he would say, I'm glad that we almost lost that game. I'm glad that we had that penalty. I'm glad that because they're teachable moments, but without the disaster of actually having lost the game. You know, so like, I think that's probably the thing. And so like the thing that stands out to me the most obviously is the penalties. And league-wide penalties are a problem right now. There's way, I mean, there's probably needs to be a deep dive into the penalty situation. We got two referees being suspended. We got setting records and penalties. But globally, like that, that's one thing. Individually, when you look in the mirror, penalties are a

result of how you practice. I know that's true. I absolutely, you know, I played years in the NFL where we would have DPI would be called on us all the time. Defensive pass interference. And our DBs would be complaining like, what man, you know what? Like, bro, that's how you practice. You're lazy and practiced. You don't bend your knees. You don't move your feet. You grab, you hold. And then all of a sudden it happens in the games and you're like complaining about it, whining about it. Like, what'd you expect? And so like, there'll be this emphasis on chasing edges and all this and all that. But and I'm sure Mike McDonald's on it. But quite honestly, it doesn't all the way surprise me from watching hard knocks. Like hard knocks, someone said something that hurt my feelings. So I started to fight and body slam my teammate like, bro, like that's you being selfish. Let's call it what it is. And we're going to go over here and like kind of like, hey man, you shouldn't have said that to him. Like, okay, that's fine. But the real problem here is a guy put himself above the team. He put himself above the mission. And I think those are the penalties.

There was one in the NFC championship game last year that guys no longer on the team. That's the stuff that like, no, we got to get that out of the building. The other penalties, the one on the special teams on the punt play, you know, some of the stuff when you're going for the ball, like, hey, whatever, like whatever. But the other stuff where like, you got a chance to walk away and you don't that's like, we got to get that out of the building. We got to get that out of the DNA. Like, that is not us. That might have been the old you. That might have been what you did on your last team. So, you know, I think those like, those coachable moments or teachable moments, you're going to need to play way better, cleaner, not have any of that stuff when you play a team like the next opponent who's, I mean, in another stratosphere compared to the chargers. Yeah. And I just want to share with you this little graphic I put together about the penalty situation, just to illustrate what you're talking about. This is a look just at the third down

penalties on defense. It's a lot of information. But basically, the thing to pay attention to here is the CX have six third down penalties that have extended drives. That is the second most in the NFL. And of those six extended drives, four of them turned into touchdowns, five of them turned into points. So, it's a real thing. Like, this is like, like, the CX are basically allowing no points at this point if they weren't cleaning up this penalty situation. Well, listen, the CX are actually playing really good defense. Like, in a lot of metrics, they're amazing. Their highlight feels got to be awesome. But it's just that the wrong time penalties. And that's the thing. And so, that's the glaring thing. For quarterbacks, I said this the other day yesterday on the con Calvary show. Quarterbacks, you make, this is what they always would say to quarterbacks in every meeting that I was ever in on every team I was ever on. They'd say, quarterback, you're going to make more money than you should then you should make because of what you do on third down. You're going to be judged by what you do on third down. It's that important. It's the it's the green down. It's the money down.

So, conversely, for defense, you know, there's some guys making a lot of money in defense too. Why? Because of what you can do on third down rush the passer effect, you know, all the stuff. So, you know, it also reminds me like just looking at your graphic about third down. I got I got when I first got to Seattle, I got a Chad Brown, the linebacker. I got him to jump off sides first in 10, whatever. I got him to jump off sides hard count. And I was like, I got you to jump off sides. And he was like, so. And I'm like, what do you mean so? It's five yards. And he says to me, because listen, I played in Pittsburgh. And one of the greatest pass rushers of all time Kevin Green, he told me this, he said, a great pass rusher is off sides once again, but just never at the wrong time. And it was like, what? Like, what are you talking about? But when I think about that, like first in 10, you jump, you jump it, you make a play and all of a sudden it's like second in the lot like, hey, like, wow, but you'd never do it on third and four. Like, there's a difference. And there's there's levels to this plane on the edge, you know, like you want to take a chance on a field goal block,

like, hey, fine, if it goes from a 25 yard field goal to whatever field goal, like, hey, but I'm not doing it on a, on a different play where it's like, hey, this is a tough field goal, to an easy field goal. Like some of those kinds of thought processes got to come in. So, anyway, just a just a pile on the penalty thing. So do you then like leave that game? But let's talk about offense. You talked about the defense. How did you feel about the C-Hawks offense? Well, there was some great stuff. I thought Emmanuel Wilson was was really strong. You know, not having jadari in price was kind of like a storyline, I thought. Like, it's very rare. You lose a guy during practice week for IR. It's just like unusual. And so she he'd, you know, Rashid had really been a huge part of the offense in the passing game. I thought they did a great job getting creative using him in the running back position as a runner. Kind of the way the Niners used to do it with Debo Samuel. That was highly successful. Great blocks down field. Touchdown runs. Like, that's, that's a win. Using Tori Horton in that kind

of that old Jake Bobo, you personnel or big people personnel. One blocking wide receiver in there, just a block. Throw him a touchdown on a running play. You know, that makes us so hard to defend. So that was, I thought that stuff was all really good. The turnovers, you know, like, you know, the interception like some of those things like that, you know, it doesn't feel good. But overall, I think it's a nice step in the right direction. Brian Flurry is showing that he's really prepared, really methodical. And the more everyone gets to know each other, the more this thing's going to gel. And obviously, the, you know, the defense doing their jobs is going to help the offense do their job and advice versa. It's totally complimentary. I want to, I want to ask you two things about that. Let's start with Rashid Shaheed. And then we'll go back to Sam Darnold and Brian Flurry together. But so they move like Rashid Shaheed playing out of the backfields, not new. Did this last year. He's done this in New Orleans. And I think it stood out because of the Jaram Price absence. And that

it feels like Rashid Shaheed can provide a little bit of the juice on, you know, outside zone. And some of these things that you don't have elsewhere on, on that roster. Do you think, this might be a hairbrain thing. Do you think it makes sense? Like I brought up that Brian Flurry was in San Francisco when the 49ers started to use Debo Samuel as a running back. Now they're very different physically. And I don't think you're going to like want Rashid Shaheed taking a bunch of hits. But three to five carries a game. Does that also allow you to get Tory Horton on the field a little bit more often as a receiver as well? Is that something that you think is worth exploring because not just as a runner back there, but you've talked about how the CX have used JSN and Cooper and other people as lined up in the backfield for route. So is that something that you think is worth exploring? Yes, for sure. And you don't have to major in it. But these things all protect each other. So as an example, the runs that went to Shaheed probably were going to go

to Jardarian price, but they went to Shaheed because Jardarian's out and Shaheed's up. And it protects all the times when a wide receivers in the backfield have in the passing game Cooper, Cup, JSN, Shaheed, like you mentioned, it protects that it's not always a pass when a wide receivers in the backfield. That stuff kind of protects you to itself. The other thing is for a defensive play collar, how it goes like the mechanics of how this goes. The offensive coordinator before he calls the play, he'll say to every coach on the headset, who then will relay it to the quarterback, he'll say something like zebra 22. And that's zebra three wides, which with 22 in the game. You know, they'll have a personnel and then all of a sudden it's like mass substitution. This guy comes in, this guy goes out, the running backs coach is usually responsible for which running backs in the game. And so like you'll see this like it's not just like a tight end in and a wide receiver out. It's not just a full back in in a wide receiver out when the sea hawk

substitute because they've got so many variations of you know, whatever 13 personnel with this wide receiver 13 personnel with that wide receiver. They say it and then Sam will relay it to the guys in the huddle so they knew who to get out. They'll signal it. And now defensively they have to signal it from their box. Hey, they got whatever 12 personnel and it's this tight end and that's head end in those two receivers. So the more guys you play and the more tendencies that are within that, it makes it hard for the defensive play color just to get his play call in on time. It's just mental gymnastics for these guys. And what they typically do when you go into a game, especially if it's a blitz team, they're like, hey man, let's have less blitzes this week. You know, let's just let's just line up and play. And that makes that's when we as an offense, we kind of gotcha, you know, that's when we gotcha, personnel wise, and then we go with our ships and motions, and then we, you know, we call what plays we want to play. So I don't, I just think this just makes us stronger. And to to answer your question about Tory Horton, when you get a little bit of territory and you do well with it, that's just going to expand your territory. But this is what's

going to happen. And you see it happen with other guys in the past. I think you saw it with Jake Bobo was an example of a guy who all year is a blocking tight end and then all of a sudden and the NFC Championship game, we give him like the corner post for like when we needed it most. Tory Horton clearly has that ability. And you saw even how the wide receiver room reacted to his touchdown, like the unselfishness in the room. There's no worry about like, oh man, that could have been my touchdown. Like they're not happy. They don't have that between Cooper Cup and the guys, the two guys that just had paid immensely Cooper Cups humility. And now Tory Horton, it's like literally everyone's like is unselfishish. You could probably the most unselfish wide receiver room in the lead if you're really thinking about it. So pretty pretty good stuff for for the OC. Yeah, there's a whole show we could just do on that. I think it's a pretty interesting topic and how that factors into success. I mean, you I don't want to take us too far down this, but I just like I know you experienced it with Jojo Revicious and and that room like having unselfish receivers that not

only are willing to share the field, but also take blocking seriously or willing to contribute to their ground game. I think it's a pretty underrated part of successful teams. No doubt. And I mentioned over last year about explosive runs. Screens fall into that category too. So when you get guy like like just, you know, JSN and Shaheed, we did pay them all the money. We don't need them or even want them going out and digging out safety's all the time. Like we don't need them stock blocking on what on on screens where like they're going to get rolled up on it's a high ankle sprain. We want to like minimize the risk and share the workload on that. And so when you have guys that are exceptional, that's why that's why I think Foster in the in the preseason was like man, like you fit what we're looking to do in terms of dirty work. We need to share the load and dirty work and you know our screen games really impressed and proved as well because of it. So that's it's all good stuff. All stuff to be excited about. All right. Last thing on this and then we're going to kind of look forward is I want your your take on on where Sam is and part of the reason I'm asking this is

you know, like if we've cards on the table is he seems like he's not quite in the same comfort zone. He was with clink Cubiac, which makes some sense. But I also feel like I've noticed that maybe teams are trying to take the boot action away from Seattle. And maybe that was a little that's one of Sam's bread and butters. It's a bread and butter this offense. I don't know if I'm just grasping it straws. How do you feel like Sam looks does he look comfortable. Does it? Am I making stuff up like where do you feel like that that part of this game is? No, I think it's the easy thing to do is to kind of blame it on clink Cubiac not being around. That's easy. But I think it's in a situation like this in a game like this one that with an opponent like this and the score what it was sometimes you can you know make sure you get the win if that makes any sense like in the Super Bowl. I don't think Sam was like the cleanest that he ever was but there was a lot of us or nobody throws you know and especially when he throws an interception onto his first pass of

the day someone might have said something to him and I think it's good advice something to the effective like he might have said it to himself. The only way this team has a chance to win the game today is if you do something careless with the football like you just did and so you kind of go into this I don't want to say play not to lose mode but this kind of a us or nobody mode quite honestly there'd be more quarterbacks in the NFL right now with better records if they let their pun or pun if they let their field goal kicker kick field goals instead of trying to be heroes when plays break down. So like I don't think it's the end of the world and I know Sam has it in him to go toe-to-toe with great quarterbacks and great teams and great offenses when that when that's the challenge when that's the job like the NFC championship game last year but I'm not going to discredit him for playing winning football you know like that's that's I thought I think he's playing winning football to your point about the naked bootlegs to me in this family of offense like the

Mike Shanahan family of offense which you know saying that because of Kyle Shanahan the naked bootlegs were really designed just to keep people honest for your run game like it's really that's what it's for so if they're sitting back and taking away the naked bootleg that's great with this this is the best thing we could ask for for our run game that's really how they describe it you know when Greg Nat came in with you know he was with Gary Kubiak when he came in and described this exact playbook he would say guys I'm not sure we don't need touchdowns on these we'll like we'll get those at times but the purpose is to keep him honest for our run game that is that is the purpose of the play knowing the play callers purpose so yeah I think it's still going to be a huge part of what they do and yeah I'm not I'm not hitting the pan I'm not concerned about it well so you would you'd mention the screen game let's let's take a look at one of the like one of them worked in this game

and then hopefully one of some time left to talk about the 49ers man I'll go quick I'll go quick so this I just thought this was really cool there's there's coaching points to every play but screens especially and there's something called run the sidewalk so I don't know if you can you draw on this at all I can so can you draw like on the top of the numbers like on the 20 just draw like all like all the way to the zero and the 10 just with straight line okay now draw on like the bottom of the numbers like from the the same line like a sidewalk basically oh I can't yeah it won't stay on there okay so basically we're gonna draw a side draws draw a little rectangle for me right there that's essentially if you could imagine like a sidewalk so the lineman when they pull out the wide receivers when they're downfield they act like it's a pass we don't know where the running backs gonna be but we do because we're giving you everyone a landmark we're gonna run the sidewalk so the quarterback he's gonna when he eventually throws the ball to the running back he's gonna catch it on the inside shoulder or outside shoulder depending on where

you know what he see what the quarterback sees behind him because he can't see and then once he catches the ball you can pause it right there where's where's the running back gonna be like where should my blockers my own lineman my wide receiver what what do we what what street do we want to clean essentially we want to clean that sidewalk right there and so that's the coaching point so this is just like teaching tape to me and there there's other screens in this game that were just like this when you're a great screen team everything else gonna kind of open up for you and this is just a great example and I don't think you can run the actual play but like if you were to run it like two seconds from now and another two seconds and pause it's it's pretty sick and this ends up being in a touchdown is that my point it you know what we talked about earlier the other thing one two three lineman plus AJ thinks down here another receiver and so that's five blockers against for defender and one of these lineman there's three lineman out here one of these lineman's kind of like the clean-up guy he's actually not running the sidewalk he's actually like typically staying home to clean up any

guy that didn't pass rush or anything you know because sometimes you'll see screens like oh that would have been great there's like one dude who like rallies from his pass rush and makes the play so there's one of those three that typically it's like hey you to go ahead I'm gonna stay back in the cover I want to give a little kudos here to Christian Haynes on this block because I have to admit I've seen some pretty rough film from him out in space trying to make I've seen blocking like air quite a bit uh as a pretty key block right here uh to spring this and even to that like sometimes like if you're an offensive lineman you're out in space with a DB and you're trying to dance with him like he's probably gonna beat you right so sometimes what they'll tell those lineman they'll say hey you just take a path and you go full speed and you make him go around the sidewalk and if he goes around the sidewalk like hey that's that's cool we'll take it yeah this is a great downfield this is a point that's Cooper Cup you know um locking up for you know ends up being a six point swing uh touchdown so uh the run the sidewalk is the coaching

point and you kind of see the sidewalk so anyway something to look for when you watch a screen not all screens are the same but that's that's an example of a traditional screen with your pulling lineman pretty neat pretty good okay so in the time we've got left whatever that is uh let's talk about this 49ers game and one of the like first just high level and then there's kind of a sneaky big injury that most people wouldn't think about with the 49ers which is Kyle use check and they live in 21 that is their thing and they haven't had situations where they haven't had him really for years so and then they typically go to a two tight end situation in that case but Jake Tungis is on IR so uh talk to me about what you see in the 49ers and in this matchup and how you think that maybe that injury might affect things yeah and it's not just 21 it's 20 personnel 22 personnel 23 personnel like anything with uh two at the beginning he's the he's their guy and he's Kyle Shanahan's guy uh for a while I think he was the highest paid fullback in the league maybe

maybe still is he's he's certainly the most marketable you see him everywhere I mean he's everywhere so no it's a real issue it's a real issue and his versatility is uh he's not a traditional fullback and that's why I kind of think that Brady Russell his role in the Seahawks offense under Bryant Flurry it's so exciting to Bryant Flurry because of the versatility and that's what Kyle use check brings so now this is a big this is a big loss I mean outside of George Kittle I don't know if there's somebody that um has has more I don't know like like Brock Purti if you were to say okay like who can you not who you get to protect it who can you not afford to lose like I think those two guys are pretty pretty legit so yeah typically when you lose your fullback what do you do you just like you mentioned you just bring in another tight end and have him do the stuff but uh that'll be interesting I do believe that'll be a tendency about personnel wise that the Seahawks will be able to get a beat on in game you know who's what what kind of like the bread and butter plays are who's in for those uh that'll be a thing so how do you think the Seahawks match

with this 40 honors team it's it's one of those games where like you know we have your playbook you have ours um so that sometimes can screw people up some people overthink it like I've literally seen teams overthink the fact they're like oh well they know that we like to do this so we're not gonna do that and you get away from who you really are so that that's a thing that's a concern but more than anything I just think this the 49ers are the hottest team football right now like you know I've kind of been saying that but I've been reluctantly saying that I've been reluctantly saying like I think that Brock Purdy if you're gonna give the quarterback if you're gonna give the MVP a war to a quarterback and know it's like way too early but like he's the guy I know we want to crown all these other guys that have big names but he's playing the best football he's got 11 touchdowns in one interception he's never been sacked this entire year he eliminates negative plays his big plays usually come on plays that should have been big plays for the defense he is very mobile very savvy even when Kyle Shanahan has terrible play calls and it happens like

you you're like oh this is what I think is gonna happen terrible play call should be a 11 yard sack he's got a touchdown out of it somehow so like he's he's on fire he's playing with confidence and uh you know I mentioned to you once upon a time that I loved when it's only a five-man protection you have five guys out that's like that's what I it doesn't make sense like oh more protection more blockers means more protection not true the best thing you can do on offense is be offensive oh you're gonna blitz that's cool we're gonna send five guys out and I'm gonna know where my hot hots are I'm gonna have sidearm throws and whatever hot throws on time throws they're really good at that so it's gonna be a challenge for Mike McDonald's company to figure out how to affect the passer they're usually what they've usually been doing is absolutely confusing the heck out of the offensive line the quarterback the running backs they tight end staying in the nineers aren't gonna be as confused they're dialed their quarterback knows what he's doing so uh that that'll be a thing that'll be a challenge two quick things I'll share with you and then I will talk team

impact and let you get on with your day so this is one piece here that that I think is worth knowing so Mike McDonald and Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan have history and when uh Brock Purdy's playing everybody else he's a 94th percentile quarterback I think he's very good I'm not in the camp of thinking he's just like mr. irrelevant I think he's a very good player and when he's played Mike McDonald he's been an 18th percentile quarterback which was a equivalent to like Desmond Ritter for 2023 Falcons his turnover rate jumps his uh and you talk about pressure um the sioxa put him under pressure all the time and some people say oh this is just that Baltimore game where he had four turnovers even if you pull that game out they have struggled to score against the siox and so uh one of the things Matt that that I'm just gonna be curious about here is I think it's these storyline does Mike McDonald still have their number has Kyle Shanahan spending off season figuring out how to get around it you know that he and Brock

Purdy been working through it so it does feel like the primary storyline in this game that's good it's really good the the thing I would say is um when healthy you know that's a big thing for Purdy you know when he's not been healthy not a big dude like literally he he works out at the high school that I coach at and he blends in with our high school players he's not a big dude like literally even in the weight room he doesn't you know it's like the kids are like really that's all he's like like he's not it's wise mr. irrelevant that's six five two thirty five he's not so when he's healthy he's dialed when he's dealing with an injury or something it affects him that's real I also think that Mike Evans is a factor you know and just like I like where we're kind of heading and trending with the DBs in Seattle but but they're also like guys that are in position that aren't making plays on the ball that need to be made and now you got a hall of favor in Mike Evans that's a problem George Kiddell is on a tear that dude is on fire right now and then Debo although not the old Debo when scramble's break when scramble's happened like having

a guy that you I'm just like a lockstep with you like so Debo being back on this team and in like I don't want to say this he's he's in shape you know he's the in shape Debo yeah good he's a good he's he's great you know and so like I just think that this is a much better team that we've seen a fire power wise for for Brock Perdi so that's um and I love those stats because I think it's it's a good thing and it speaks to Mike McDonald really knowing the rules like okay if we if we blitz here Kyle's telling him to do that like it like yeah that's a good that's the kind of thing that's why these division games are so great like with like McVeigh or Shannon and it's why quite honestly why I think Mike McDonald got hired for this job we need someone who can shut down the two great offensive minds in the game right now and we're gonna hire basically the defensive version of Sean McVeigh the WizKid youngest coach in the NFL and it's it's been it's been a great hire well I will tell you that some of those graphics are gonna show up in my NFL.com preview

of this game that's gonna be going up tomorrow moving up I'm doing 40 seconds dude I had no idea how fast 40 seconds goes it was not easy uh tell folks about team impact and and why you are repinting them. That team impact is a charitable organization it pairs kids who are disabled or have disease with NCAA athletic teams a bunch of different teams I think there's been about 4,000 teammates so to speak and it's just gives the kids who are you know struggling with health health issues gives them something that medicine could never give for them give to them and at the same time it gives something to these athletes that truly they need in this day and age of NIL and transfer portal and college is hard college athletics are hard and sometimes it's all about you and this is just a great organization where you realize it's not all about you it's about what you can do for others and it's great they've got a huge event coming up in Chicago in November and other events there's one in L.A there's one in Boston but team impact org is the website and

yeah it's just a great organization and I've just seen it firsthand how great it is. Appreciate you Matt and appreciate team impact and we will be happy to continue supporting them. our sponsors hopefully you're getting some good deals out there on all sorts of things and again make sure you meet me and grant cone this Saturday at lowlander brewing hot blogger dot com slash lowlander tickets are gonna go fast hope to see you there and make sure you go to hbticks dot com to get your tickets make sure you sell in your tickets there let's I think there's gonna be a lot of 49ers fans at this game when they are doing well when they're undefeated to front running group of fans they will try to take over so let's make sure we are getting as many people in those seats that are sea hawks fans as possible over at hbticks dot com all right let's go through some super chats and I think I have some Venmo super chats I should get to as well that I think I missed yesterday but let's start with what we got here um yokehi hawk says what is the lockroom definition of manager of violence and what is the edge associated with being a manager of violence what should we expect versus san francisco compared to l.a chargers regarding being an m o v uh i don't exactly know

how to answer this uh yokei appreciate the request um i think this is just a phrase that the team has that's a cool phrase i don't think that it's uh necessarily a deeper meaning i can ask the guys and find out my interpretation of it is that they want to be violent and they want to be warriors in the garden which is like they have to be handling their business and avoiding penalties and stuff like that while being uh violent on the field that's at least my interpretation but I can check in on it on the smoke hawk has been remembered for two years says i love the expectation that the expectation is better than winning yeah i've seen some people on there like oh man see ox fans are so spoiled that they're like you know tolerating a three and one start i guess i just see it differently i i i see that any individual team in any season and even every game or maybe even every play

depending on how specific you want to get you're measuring like expectation uh potential versus execution and reality and you should want to play to your standard as much as humanly possible and when there's a significant percentage of your performance that does not meet the standard even if it doesn't mean that you lose that's the definition of process over results they've got that on t shirts there as well the process matters and the fact that the c ox one because the chargers largely are one of the worst teams in the NFL does not change the fact that the c ox need to clean up their game to get where they want to go so yeah i have no problems with separating out the results from the process i think that's in fact exactly what you should be doing mason's tovar comes in with new website is badass our old website felt exactly that old thanks to all for all you do on camera

and behind the scenes f the 49ers go hocks well thank you yeah i just added something new to the website today that hopefully we'll make it a little bit easier here i'll show this to you guys um why is that not showing did you do you had to stage all right so um let's do that way uh so now at the top uh you can see my posts on twitter with graphics and all those things will show up there so for people that have moved off twitter which a lot of people have or just don't go there as often um all my posts will be up there that's kind of where i do my latest things so you can see you know all the stuff going on there a little bit easier and if you're going this on your phone you can tap that to expand it uh as well so i'm really glad that people are appreciating it i'm enjoying it and uh also really enjoying the hb daily i i feel like i i'm getting a lot out of doing that every day

i hope other people are as well make sure you sign up it's free um to get it every single day uh all right kory colman says who's been a member for 26 months i see a lot of blitzes from Nick spoon and love against the niner's brock as two limb nimble for defensive line players i think a j and a laja come alive in this game well interesting you bring up the nick thing um i've actually got a graphic on this that i just posted to twitter uh so let's put this up here oops there we go so take a look at this there's a lot to kind of take in on this nickyman worry uh as an edge player this is new this is new uh he did it a little bit last year but he is doing it a higher percentage of the snaps he was 11% of his snaps last year was an edge he's up to 27% so a third of his snaps essentially have been as an edge player so far in 2026

and the interesting part there is that um he's doing pretty well with it uh his past rush winrate uh against other edge players you know it ranks higher uh you know he's at 14.3% here i've seen it depending on where you look at it higher than 14.3% um if you look at his pressure rate overall this includes when he's not been blocked uh it's 28.6% which would be number one of all ed rushers um but even when he's blocked his pressure rate ranks 15th out of 73 ed rushers uh so i know a lot of people want the sea ox to trade for an edge clear mac has come up a lot as someone who could be available keep in mind that someone comes in they are taking snaps away from ucena new osu to markis loren's Derek hall uh nickyman worry

and you could say well maybe they stick past red rushers away from dante faller i share with you before the game last week that the sea ox highest pressure rate in a four man front is when dante faller juniors on the field so like i'm just not as i don't see it as a five alarm fire that the sea ox need to go get another ed rusher i am intrigued by what's going on with nickyman worry like the guy's never really done this and is already showing some potential i'm kind of wanting to see what comes with more time on this now uh i do think there's a potential that you know physically it could be a little different for him and how he holds up is something we'll want to keep an eye on but generally speaking i think there's some promising early results there uh all right let me get to venmo super chats and then i will get to the rostromos uh okay amit guha says refs were shit but it's still really sloppy game should have won by two scores of

play calling was questionable times offensive play calling is questionable my opinion we should have thrown the ball a lot more even though we were up thoughts i see a lot of people super critical brine flurry after that game and maybe critical of sam d'Arnold missing an open jsn i i think that the tv did some maybe some not friendly things to sam i didn't think it was quite as egregious of a bad game as the implications i've seen for sam i've told you i think he doesn't look quite comfortable but i also agree with what matt said that he was managing a game where he knew that if he just didn't make mistakes they were gonna win and as far as flurry's play calling i don't know man uh i didn't have like i haven't done dive deep into some of that stuff but generally i didn't have a huge problem with his his play calling in this game i know a lot of people did so i'm a little bit different in that regard joe hamilton says how to chance to meet your wife at a book signing event last year and she was lovely glad to hear about her new project put this towards a treat for

missus hot black well that's very friendly of you joe i really appreciate it for people that don't know what he's talking about my wife has started a new business she's worked in the disability space for years and now she is making her services available to anybody who needs them if you go to nemhouse.com nem h o us e.com you can find out all about her services including a retreat that she's putting together with a colleague who uh it's for parents of kids with disabled kid uh parents of disabled children who are planning to transition those kids out of school and that's a really hard time we're we're going through that with our son right now um and they're gonna they put together a retreat they're gonna get people a ton of information they're gonna help you connect with other people in the community who are going through the same thing all in a place that is very peaceful in the northwest and uh it should be a great experience for those parents so nemhouse.com check all that out and thanks to joe for that uh i met guha with one more says whether or not whether we like it or not mixin is a seahawk interested to see what he can add especially as a checkdown guy

receiver doesn't fumble much either culture wise could hurt though he's a bit of a firecracker thoughts and love the show well perfect lead in to the roster moves uh of the day or of yesterday as the case may be the seahawks did sign joe mixin to the practice squad or that move will become official today uh michael michdonald kind of talked about it in his press conference yesterday um and then they also and this was i think somewhat more interesting signs robert henry uh junior off of the commanders practice squad to their 53 man roster so again the rules there are that any player on a practice squad can be signed away from that team the team cannot block it if you add them to your 53 man roster interestingly i have seen situations where players have refused to get added to a 53 man roster because they want to stay with the team it has happened it happened recently but in this case the seahawks sound like they have snagged a running back from the commanders so he will be on the 53

man roster joe mixin will not he will be on the practice squad and as far as like who is um robert henry junior um you know he's got kind of an interesting background um went to the same school to the same college as as to reek wolen um and you know he's had some decent years in college he was an undrafted player this year so he's brand new he's 24 years old he's five nine about 200 pounds so he's not the biggest guy he also isn't the fastest he ran a 452 40 not exactly like blazing speed um you know he's he's a guy he's got decent explosion 30 since seven inch vert uh ten and a half uh broad uh bench press 17 reps of 225 so strong-ish dude we'll see and like we'll see what goes on there someone on the 53 man roster will need to be

let go in order to make space i'm assuming it's going to be valus jones what will happen then is because valus jones spent this weekend on the 53 man roster he will be able to get back to the practice squad should he and the team want him there if that happens he will get three new practice squad elevations so he was out of practice squad elevations or close to it now he'll get that that reset he might go elsewhere but he probably will be back with the see hawks robert henry junior maybe in plans soonish maybe not mic me donald said yesterday that zaxx arbonet is going to advance into team reps this week which he's excited about but also clarified that he is not going to play this week uh so he is not going to play against 49ers we'll see if he plays against the the broncos my guess is he probably won't play against the broncos either but that's where things stand i think he'll probably be back for the game following the broncos match but uh we'll kind of

keep an eye on that so where does that leave things with the roster and the the running back position you've got a manual wilson who i think is still your primary guy you've got George halani who while a lot of people do not want to see him out there i expect to see him out there similar amount that he was a week ago and jacardi a right if people might be wondering about magmaik donalds indicated theirs an injury situation there i wouldn't be surprised if he is the guy that's put on like practice squad ir or something like that to make room for joe mixton but we will see about that um and so then joe mixton you know he was out for you know all of last year with a pretty mysterious injury no one really said much about it apparently he's in good shape i the question to amit's a point here i don't love the background i mean there's video this guy putting hands on a woman and then some additional stuff there that came at a different incident

in 2023 i believe that ended up not charges didn't end up holding up don't love it i don't love it i don't know the guy i am always try to be careful about making comments about people that i've never met and i don't understand the situation but it's hard for me to understand any situation that would make it appropriate to lay hands on somebody especially a woman so um i don't love it that that's my that's my take uh i understand the ciox are going to do what they've got to do and we will just see how it goes um so probably as much as i'll say there speaking of not loving it uh there was some updates on the terri on Arnold situation in that uh one of his childhood friends has pleaded guilty and as part of that plea has committed to being quote honest about any involvement that terri on Arnold had in the incident

and i don't know what's going to come of that if anything but i don't think it's particularly positive news on the terri on Arnold front and it would not surprise me that if this ends up going the wrong way for terri on Arnold that the ciox end up parting ways with him um i think they probably added him under a certain expectation based on what they had heard and if the evidence starts to go the other direction uh we'll see um so that's all i know i don't know anything specific but that's that's part of what's going on there um mike mcdonald has said that he felt like terri on digs played well i think the terri on digs fit is really good in Seattle he and josh joh but people don't remember played together at albama i've shared pictures and video of the two of them just smiles and you know being reunited here and how much they've enjoyed that experience so i'm i'm really intrigued by the terri on digs edition i'm intrigued by nickey minori at edge i'm

intrigued by how they're deploying their safeties and their corners and rotating guys in i think they're getting good play from neomyamia pritchett and from josh job and from devin witherspoon and now tio kada has a chance to play this week and i think that he is a big ad as well i'm really curious if the team's gonna give him reps over rodney tomas there's been a lot of talk of rodney tomas played pretty well does he wally pip tio kada and take the starting spot while tio was hurt i mean i'll trust the coaches to make that call but i think tio kada had a terrific camp and i've been really looking forward to seeing him get back out there this is a guy that's always going to be assignment correct super smart i think he's like drake tomas in the way that he just knows everything that's going on out there and uh like julium love as well they're both just really smart i love the the football i cube both of them bring and tio kada is an excellent athlete uh he's a better

athlete than koby brion was like by any measurement pretty much he is a better athlete than koby brion and i think he has ball skills i saw him make a lot of interceptions in training camp so i i would love to see tio kada out there and let's let's see what the coaches decide if he is indeed available so a lot of different roster machinations going on there um what do i want to do with this time there's so much to cover um i'm debating how much i want to get into uh 49er stuff i think i'm going to leave it for tomorrow but what i will do is i just pulled before this show the latest data on christian hay sands and boasts devins um as far as snap counts uh so let's all give this to you guys so it has been 61% christian hans 39% boasts devins uh the snap counts against the chargers was 36 for

hans 25 for stevens i think that's a little bit closer past blocking wise um compared to every other guard that has more than 30 past blocks and apps which is 84 guards hans um hans uh has given up a pressure rate of 5.9% he's lost 10% of his reps um boasts devins has given up a 7.7% pressure rate so higher than the 5.9 and he has lost 15.4% of his reps according to charting so you know this is based off i think uh sumer charting if i remember right it might be ftn charting actually now this is ftn charting um by the way you can get ftn fantasy uh 10% off with code hbam at ftnfantasy.com uh so um run blocking wise uh hans has 53 reps to to stevens 39 uh they both only have one high mark uh stevens has six

low marks so um hans has been significantly more positively graded both in past protection and run blocking so far notable that stevens has the worst net mark on run blocking of any of the 72 guards that ftn uh assesses so um and four of his six low marks came in the last two games so maybe some challenges for stevens there in terms of um uh where he's doing as a run blocker and i mean christian hans looks like he's been somewhat of a league average guard which isn't the the worst thing in the world uh with the team when each of them are on the field the EPA per drop back has actually been better with both stevens on the field. .19 versus .08 past success rate has

been better with stevens on the field pressure rate has been the same with either of them on the field more sacks have been given up three to one when stevens has been out there uh yards per carry has been better with stevens 4.0 to 3.7 yards before contact has been better with stevens on the field 1.2 to 0.8. . EPA per carry has been better with stevens on the field. .18 per carry without fumbles has been equal so that's actually worth knowing um so i don't know like take for that for what you will i think those guys have been relatively even christian hans maybe a little bit better but not so much better that it's like you got to start um you got to start uh changing how you're mixing things um uh all right and then

kevin says you're talking about this over the niner's um well part of it is i've got a whole show dedicated to the preview tomorrow with the niner's um i'll i'll share this so one of the things that i talked about with matt today was the importance of Kyle use check and um check this out this is some research i did on when use check has been absent and um if you look at this Kyle use check has not missed a lot of games but when he has they typically have gone to 12 personnel with two tight ends but their running game suffers yards per carry this is back in 2019 when he missed a few weeks they went from 5.4 yards

per carry to 4.0 their early down success rate went from 43% to 29% 10 plus yard runs in a game went from 4.6 to 2.8 they largely abandoned the 21 personnel set when the two back set when Kyle use check has been out previously um and if you look up in the top quarter of this graphic you can see that in 2026 42% of their snaps are coming in 21 personnel with a fullback out there that's tops in the league they are also um let me look this up make sure i've got the right number here i can pull this very quickly um where is it's to do here we go um so if i look at the 49ers and i look at their personal grouping uh 21 personnel number one in the league and usage number five in the league

inefficiency in terms of EPA per play or success rate um so that's that's a big one and how they're gonna adjust to him being out he's not like he's not a guy that's gonna put up a lot of numbers but here's the other thing that's kind of interesting is that Mike McDonald has absolutely assassinated 21 personnel for the 49ers and he has not had as good a marks going against the 49ers 12 personnel to tight ends or 11 personnel three receivers so there's some world where maybe this is helpful for the 49ers and that it takes away a lot of tendencies that maybe Mike McDonald has scouted and picked apart and now he's going to have to figure out a little bit of a what was going to be a uncommon game plan for Kyle Shanahan that could give him a little bit of an edge over Mike McDonald because all all evidence points to the fact that you know Mike McDonald has

put Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy in a box that they have not been able to get out of so um anyway i think the the Kyle use check absence is larger than people might realize they also um they are missing they are missing somebody else let me pull this up on my profile so Marcus Siegel their safety is expected to miss a few weeks so Malik Mustafa will step in i think Malik Mustafa has been very good um up and stout is one to watch he is day to day with what's called an ac joint sprain um those can be pretty painful usually you'll miss a week but it's possible he could play is a pretty tough guy uh the 49ers are planning to activate my kehl Williams it's not clear whether he would play this week but that is one to watch and Kyle Shanahan said Shanahan said he is not expecting Nick Boasa to play this week against the siox that's obviously huge news

Nick Boasa is a massive swing in how the 49ers are able to affect the passer so a lot of different like roster and personnel comings and goings um i will be getting into more detail about like a lot of detail about this 49ers game tomorrow um but yeah it's the 49ers have been in my mind if not the best team in football like they're right there and one thing i can show uh let's bring up let's bring up the power rankings for Tuesday now that we have um had a full day um so here is hotplugger.com let's go to the power rankings um right here and you can see i'll zoom in for you all oops that's not what i wanted to do although the jags are having a nice season so far

uh there we go so 49ers are number one number one in power rankings my power rankings just to prove that i don't put my thumb on the scale the numbers are what the numbers are and so far they see the 49ers as a slight leader over the siox they're rating is 5.6 keep in mind the way this is calculated is that 5.6 means that on a neutral field the 49ers would beat an average team by 5.6 points the siox are plus plus 5.4 so it's pretty close they're 5.4 points better than a average team on a neutral field and this is using 25% of last season's grades so that is a factor here that's going to continue to drop down as the season i think by week six it it goes away entirely but this

was all stuff i've done modeling on that shows that you you should be including some of last season's performance up till a certain point of this season um 49ers in this particular rankings rank number one on offense and number seven on defense we'll get into what's been working with them for them with Rahim Morris as their new defense of coordinator um the siox number eight on offense number one on defense they're kind of mirror images of each other right uh so you've got that you've got schedule interesting here that it's got the 49ers as the 26th ranked strengths of schedule uh the siox as dead last in terms of strengths of schedule so far which i think tracks but if you look at who the 49ers have faced they have faced the Rams who are sixth that's pretty high up Denver's down at 16th uh so interesting to see the Broncos down there and by the way pat Sir Tan

does not look like he is going to play against the siox in the Thursday night football game so that's an interesting one um who else of the 49ers faced they have faced um the Miami Dolphins and the Arizona Cardinals so 31st and 32nd ranked teams so that's dragging it down but i think the Denver game i put a little more weight on i think that was a decent team but they have not necessarily shown that um and the fact that the Rams are still up there is man god they got fortunate against the um fortunate against the uh the Eagles for sure uh let me show you a couple things like i highly recommend you guys check this out yourself stats.hockbucker.com you can go and dig into the 49ers and what's got them to be a undefeated team so far but i mean i i tell you i look at these views all the time so um is EPA per play and you can kind of see how on offense

and defense it's been going look at how the EPA per play on defense has been going the wrong way if you're a 49ers fan to know most of you are not um but and the EPA per play on offense was really good but then took a big dive against the Broncos so um that's an interesting way to kind of look at that trend you can look at success rate as well um and 49ers kind of coming in a below average there on defense um yards per play uh again explosive play rate this is one of the ones to really keep an eye on the 49ers number three in the NFL in explosive play rate on offense number one in the NFL in explosive play rate allowed on defense um so anyway there's a bunch of stuff to go through here i would also i like looking at the splits which gives you a nice little heat map of how do they do on different downs and distances on offense and defense when where they are in

certain parts of the field how do they do um by quarter by game situation and then personnel wise you can also this is where you can get all that personnel data um for all the different personnel groupings how often they use it how efficient they are in it with as a passing team as a rushing team what their pass rate is their play action rate the pressure rate all this stuff the thing that stands out the most about the 49ers is the fact that they have not given up a sack yet this year and Brock Purdy one of the things he is elite at is pressure to sack ratio what does that mean that means you can get pressure on him it doesn't mean he's going to get sacked and his ability to evade pressure is a really big deal so lots and lots of stuff to get into you can dive into some of yourself before i even get there i'll be back with you tonight five o'clock for see our collective with Annabelle Hassabak and with Rob Staten um let me just double check that i didn't miss any

other super chats i did not uh appreciate everybody for tuning in uh make sure you're getting tickets to this game at hbtxt.com make sure you are going to be there at lowlander hawkbogger.com slash lowlander to join me and grant there all right take care have a great rest
