Thanks for being here today on KFI AM640. We are live everywhere on the I Heart Radio App. My name is Sam Sheen. I'm in today for John Cobalt, who's taking a little time off. It is my pleasure to be here on what is a very sad day for the media family, for a lot of folks in the Los Angeles area, with what happened to an NBC4 News helicopter. Two members of the NBC4 News Team on board have perished, they have died. The NTSB is in Los Angeles investigating the crash. And we're going to begin right away. We are joined on the live line by Conan Nolan, who is with NBC4, has been there for many, many years. I'm sure you're aware of Conan in his work. Conan, thank you for joining us. First of all, our sympathies and our condolences to you and the entire NBC4 News Team. This has to be a very difficult day for you. It certainly is. I've been at this, thank you for that for one thing.
And yeah, I just recently celebrated my 40th year here at NBC in Los Angeles. And never had a day like yesterday. What do you know about what happened? Is it any clear to you now than it was when it happened? No, NTSB has suggested that, as come out and said that we weren't on the air with that helicopter. That is not on the linear broadcast, but we were streaming it on the website. And so we have the last 30 seconds, 40 seconds. The camera is on the bus accident, which itself claimed three rides. And then you start to hear what appears to be the engine winding down and the roadpaters winding down. The cockpit, there's an alarm that goes off when the rotation of the blades are not sufficient to keep the airship
from going off. Essentially in the air and the NTSB has said that is the critical piece of evidence they're trying to get. And we have them. We have the copy that they're looking for. A recorded copy. We just spoke with a former NTSB aviation investigator who works at USC at their aviation accident school. And he said clearly there's the alarm went off. You could hear the rotators starting to wind down the pilot George. He utters something. I know that Eliana you can hear her say, uh oh. And and how that happened. It appears as well that the according to the investigators that the nose of the aircraft started to go down. And they'd be consistent with the pilot trying to seek some wind velocity to give him an attempt at an auto rotate.
Where you don't need the engine, but the propellers or the blades can. I can. Can be tired. Sort of the. The descent to give it in the chance for a softer landing. That obviously wasn't achieved. So we don't know what happened. We will find out in about 30 days on a preliminary report of fundamental to the investigation is to is this videotape. And then although it burned it. It was fireball. They couldn't even recover the tail number. But the engine itself. I think they're pretty confident they'll be able to figure out if there's there was some impediment that got in the way of the fuel line. That that starved it of the fuel that needed to stay of stay airborne or what happened, but it was a catastrophic failure. And it just a few moments and it took took took the lives of our colleagues and it.
It was quite devastated. We we very much are interested to know what what happened. And we can only imagine what it was like inside the NBC for news room. I know that other news stations had their helicopters above that crash. Can you kind of take us to what it was like to be in the newsroom. When did you realize that there was something that went very, very wrong? Well, we've heard that there have been an explosion. And so on the ground covering the the Metro bus crash. And they saw an explosion. And then we immediately looked up and to the bank of monitors where we monitor our competitors, ABC, CBS, Fox, all the other stations. They had an airship up on on the Metro bus crash, but we didn't have ours up.
And and immediately and and from what I understand, and Porter's on in the field, knew, knew it was an air crash. And they just went to each other saying it was yours was a yours was a yours. And we did know is ours we we saw the other stations had because it was a short distance away from the Metro bus crash. They could immediately were able to put that image on their air. And we could see that there was an airship that was down and engulfed in flames. We could see the rotors. And then we looked for them. We tried to get a hold of. We tried to get a hold of a Leon and George and couldn't. And so that's when this deep deep or effect feeling started to engulf the nation.
I've got about a minute. Excuse me about a minute left, Conan. These two individuals, Ellie on and George, do you have any memories that stand out? What can you tell us about them? You know, I didn't know George the pilot 70 years old. He was from what I'm told. He was a local guy in Burbank, high school, loved to fly highly regarded. Ellie on a marano was I didn't know her. She's also a local girl. Early 30s just engaged to get married. A graduated from Chapman University went back frequently to talk to students there. She loved what she did. She, you know, there is a risk in anything in terms of aviation. She was she. You know, there's love and labor and she loved what she did. She was also. For us, we, you know, we are a dual doop police. There's an English language station and teleblonde affected too. She was completely bilingual and she was a joy to work with and the loss is sort of staggering.
So we're still trying to process that and. And we're not, as you will know, we're not in the business of in loading. That's not our job. But I think the public can understand just how heartbreaking this is. Not just for us, but somebody else died on the industry and died in that crash on the ground. Not to mention three others on the bus crash. So all in all, it was six anglingas lost their lives yesterday. It was a really bad day. Conan, I want to thank you so much for taking the time and giving us your insight. And again, our sympathies and our thoughts are with you. Thank you very much. I appreciate that. Thank you. We're going to move forward and pick up on some of the newest and latest information. We are joined now by a will Coleshyber. He is a Los Angeles hub. I heart media total traffic and weather network reporter and will I know that you as a traffic reporter. I spent some time in a helicopter. I have as well back in the day when I was doing television news for many, many years, I would go up in a helicopter. I've told people about this before. The views sometimes can be absolutely spectacular, but in those helicopters, you bounce around a lot. I never felt altogether comfortable in a helicopter period, but it can be really a frightful experience, but tell us a little bit about your experiences.
Good afternoon, by the way Sam. Thank you so much. You really how small you are when you're up in a helicopter. You're really small, especially over a large thing like a big brush fire or something like that. You're when you're incredibly high up. You just feel like a little speck, a little fly, getting bounced around. You're absolutely correct. You're kind of at the whims of mother nature. Before I was at KFI, I was several years ago spent several years in this helicopter, the exact helicopter that the crash doing exactly what she was doing, running the camera and reporting over things. This is just one of those things that's in the back of your mind. If you're in that back seat that they can happen sometimes you let your mind wander a little bit and you think all the scenarios that could happen. Unfortunately for for Eliana and George yesterday, that's exactly what happened.
So will you were in that exact helicopter you said, did you ever experience any problems in that helicopter? Nothing like that. No, certainly not. You know, they're being mostly weather related types of things. We end up in situations where I would think privately to myself, boy, I really wish we weren't here today. I was just thinking, and usually having to do the weather, but that was not the case this time. You know, the first thing I'd heard about this situation yesterday was that just awful tape that was online showing you know the last few seconds. You know, the thing that keeps really banging around in my head is just how quickly everything went wrong. It was, you know, everything was fine. They were in a hover and then 30 seconds later it was all over.
Right. Right. I was struck by that as well. It seems to me like there was some it seems. I mean, just from watching that well, like there may have been some sort of a mechanical failure of some sort. I don't really know. NTSB. I know is an intern in their investigating. 100%. I mean, based on what I saw and heard, you know, you hear the alarm horn, the beep, beep, beep, beep, and you know, you hear the engine first goes up really high. And then it goes down really low and and you hear, aliana, as as Conan mentioned, you know, shout something like, you know, can you, can you, are you able to pull up or you're able to pull up and he's obviously not. And it doesn't seem, I mean, they weren't moving. They were in a dead hover. So it's not like he was doing something or, you know, the aircraft was not necessarily moving anywhere. So it's the it sounded like something catastrophically went wrong in the engine as far as possibly the fuel or the systems that govern the fuel.
You know, I once upon a time I was speaking with a pilot helicopter pilot about that job. And he said to me that there was an old adage among helicopter pilots that you have, there's a number that every helicopter pilot has his or her number. And when you hit that number that you don't want to hit that number. In other words, you know, every time you go up in one of those airships, that that could be it. I don't know if, if pilots deal with that or if you dealt with that when you were flying. Well, you know, it is always something kind of in the back of your mind. You know, when you're over a story for a long time, you might let your mind wander scenarios, you know, what could go wrong. But honestly, it's for so many of the guys, just it is a job. And many, many, many pilots will go their entire career without any incident whatsoever or at least nothing, nothing major. And and aircraft literally as their lifetimes go on, they're basically replaced several times over as far as parts, you know, you know, they don't, they this aircraft does not have anywhere close to the same engine it had when it was originally made.
Everything gets replaced. And so this is just a situation where something really went wrong and hopefully this invested it's hard to imagine that they'll be able to make sense of what was left after that fire, but they're professionals. They know how to do that and hopefully they will. Well, well, thank you very much. Really appreciate you taking the time and the insight telling us about your experiences. Yep, really appreciate it. He was in the very same helicopter once upon a time earlier in his career. He's with the Los Angeles hub. I heart media, total traffic and weather network as a reporter and we appreciate his time. There's a lot I want to get to here coming up on the other side of the break. Other news out there. A number one TMZ with a very interesting report out there indicating that very likely Paramount has made a decision that they are going to leave California. So I want to get into some of that reporting that's out there. There isn't a ton, but what they do have I want to dive into.
And also a big announcement out of the federal government in Washington DC, some big arrests in Southern California in the Los Angeles region having to do with the homeless crisis and with LASA and with allegations of fraud and corruption, potentially money laundering, some very serious allegations. Now this is all tied together, potentially. Mayor Karen Bass could be part of this has not been named, but nevertheless we're going to draw all this tie all of this together for you straight ahead. You're listening to John Cobalt on demand from KFI AM640. My name is Sam Shane. I'm in for John Cobalt. Good to be here. Always great to work with John's crew. They're fantastic group. And a lot to get into. We're going to turn the page and get into some other news of the day. I want to get into I don't know if you've seen this report. There's a report out of TMZ at this hour that they've made a decision at Paramount that they're going to leave and they've notified the mayor's office. They've notified the attorney general's office. So I want to get into some of that how that stands right now and where any type of negotiation might be underway. Maybe there might be a settlement in the works. Maybe not.
So many details already got some reaction on that by the way from someone listening on the I hard radio up to the program. So we'll roll that out for you momentarily. But before we do that. I want to get out into this news coming out of Washington DC, which has a direct impact on Los Angeles. US Department of Justice has announced now the arrest of two people employed at the Los Angeles area homeless nonprofits on federal charges alleging misuse of millions of taxpayer dollars. A third defendant remains a fugitive. So one of the defendants is the co-founder of a Culver City based nonprofit allegedly misappropriated more than seven and a half million dollars and use the money for commercial real estate and to finance the construction of a nightclub. And a bingo hall according to the Department of Justice another the fugitive has been accused of being fraudulent awarded more than a million dollars in grant money from an L.A. County funded nonprofit.
And then this third person identified by federal officials as an employee of a nonprofit health and human services organization who has been arrested on a 21 count indictment charges that charges that she was taking more than $180,000 in bribes from a fourth person who's being charged separately and has already agreed to a plea deal. So obviously there is one who's been charged who sounds like they are cooperating. This has to go to nonprofits. It's has to go to NGOs. I want to talk about that in a moment and why that system absolutely needs to get cleaned up. It's dirty. And we'll get into that in a moment. But we're going to spell this all out for you with an audio clip. And we rewind just a couple of days now. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass just suddenly stepped down from LASA. This was a few days ago. You may recall this story. OK, LASA they're the ones that oversee the whole homeless program in the city of Los Angeles. Well, today the secretary of HUD Scott Turner revealed 75 million dollars of fraud. He says was laundered through LASA.
These files has received over $130 million more than 75 million dollars of those will funnel through the Los Angeles homeless services authority also known as LASA. That is nearly the same amount LASA received from HUD every year until the Trump administration put an end to the California corruption. LASA has continually funded a homeless industrial complex on the backs of American taxpayers while fraud has continually run rampant. No wonder their track record at LASA is a failing record while homelessness funding tripled in L.A. over the past decade homelessness has doubled. And when you dig deeper we found out why LASA the largest recipient of homeless funding in the nation is riddled with fraud, waste and abuse. And those days of blank checks are indeed over. Today those who broke the law are facing the ultimate consequence law and order.
This may just be the beginning folks. The feds clearly are focused on LASA. And here you have just a few days ago the mayor of Los Angeles Carrenbass stepping aside. Earlier this week she by the way was invited earlier this week to testify before a subcommittee in Congress on this very topic on homelessness on the millions and millions of dollars that have just somehow mysteriously disappeared. How the crisis keeps getting worse not better. And her attorney sent a letter to Congress and said no she won't be there for that. They've also asked for documentation they say that they will cooperate here. Carrenbass's office has indicated that they will cooperate. But this is very problematic. They're going to focus in more on this and they're going to get locked in on this investigation and there could be more to come. And it has to do with the nonprofits it has to do with the NGOs and a system which is filled with corruption.
And there's money that's being funneled into and sloshing around these NGOs and nonprofits for reasons that we don't really know. Like the spouse of a politician who all of a sudden received $25,000 or their friend who runs the NGO or the nonprofit who's the CEO who all of a sudden is making a six figure salary. But the money's not getting to the people who really need it. And this is a system which needs attention soon to be cleaned up. TMZ I want to get into this reporting. This has to do with paramount headline. LA and state officials say the studio is leaving California. This is according to TMZ internal discussion in the Los Angeles mayor's office and the California Attorney General's office. They've been told paramount would announce that they are leaving California but there is a twist according to sources who tell that to TMZ. TMZ reports were told the mayor and the AG were told the announcement would come yesterday but did not happen.
We do not know if circumstances changed or if there was a delay. As you probably are aware TMZ reports the California Attorney General and others within the 11 other state attorneys general have filed this antitrust lawsuit of course against paramount trying to block the Warner Brothers merger. And then you have David Allison. He's the CEO of paramount. He is threatened to move the studio to Texas or Tennessee, maybe even Georgia, if the California Attorney General Rob Bonta does not back off and settle. Allison has threatened to leave California if a settlement was not reached by October 1st. We're talking weeks now. TMZ reports based on conversations in both the mayor's and Attorney General's offices. It sounds like no deal is possible. If paramount pulls the trigger TMZ rights, it'll be a devastating one to punch for Hollywood. I don't know if you've heard this story. But American Idol, that's been announced today, leaving Hollywood for Atlanta. Other productions have also left Hollywood over the past few years.
TMZ reached out to paramount and they offered no comment. Stay tuned to that one. I've got some reaction from a listener on that that I want to get to on the other side who's been listening on the iHeart radio app, which by the way if you want to weigh in and you're listening on the iHeart radio app, all you have to do is tap on the red microphone button. You can record your message there and we'll be playing those throughout the program today. My name is Sam Shane. I'm in for a John Cobalt. It is good to be here today when we come back. Apparently there's some a new reporting out there in a new interview. Governor Wilson has come out and said that he regrets closing public schools during COVID. So we'll tell you the source of that information coming up on the other side. Got an interesting clip from this interview between CNN's Jake Tapper and Governor Newsom. They were fly fishing in Montana. Apparently this was done about a month ago by the way. There's a clip out there apparently where Governor Newsom says that he regrets shutting down public schools during COVID.
I want to get to that in just a second. We're getting some reaction coming in from people who have been listening to the program on the iHeart radio app and they've left us a couple of messages. I want to get to those. Has to do with the story that I just reported from TMZ that Paramount has made the decision to leave. No comment officially from Paramount, but apparently there are some sources that tell TMZ from inside LA, AmeriCorps, and Bass's office and from the Attorney General's office. That is indeed the case that they were given that notification as recently as yesterday. So some of the reaction that's coming on here is just one. Well, if that's true, the Paramount's leaving. That's only great news. California deserves it. They are not business friendly and good luck to them. Whoever wants to work for them, maybe they're going to be leaving with them. California has done it again. And for what? Have a nice day, you guys.
So that's not just a Hollywood story, right? I mean, this is a story that is crossed industries, not just the entertainment industry. Boy, if you just take a look at all of the businesses that have up and left from Tesla to Charles Schwab and the different categories, they move their headquarters out. And the erosion continues. There's no question about it. Got some more reaction to that story from another listener listening on the iHeart radio app. Okay, Sam. First of all, I don't blame Paramount for leaving because Bonta and Newsom are sick and their beaks were doesn't belong. So they just gave up a lot of jobs and a lot of tax money in California because they want to control everything. Okay, that's Newsom and Bonta. And as far as the fraud goes, what do you know? Bonta is not doing anything about it. The federal government does it because Rob Bonta says he has under control. And the news from Bonta, I'm glad I left California. Okay, so that listener is out and he makes a very good point about how the state has not been aggressively investigating any of the corruption and fraud that we are seeing.
Look, the feds have locked in on this and this is where we're going to get a lot of the answers and more of the deep investigation. I've heard from a number of people. I was saying, well, you know, there's been no proof that there's any corruption or fraud in voting or a financial aid. Well, no, not if you don't investigate. If you don't investigate a crime, what are you going to find? So that's where we are now. We are beginning to just see this for the very first time. And it's thanks to exposure from a lot of independent journalists, by the way, people like Nick Shirley and James O'Keefe, who have produced incredible videos from Southern California long skid row and other places, hospice centers, showing the allegations of fraud, voter fraud, financial fraud. And now all of a sudden, we're getting some serious investigations and some serious results of the investigations, not just in Los Angeles, also in places like San Diego. Just this week within the past couple of days, here's another story, 12 San Diego County residents facing federal fraud charges.
After a parole revealed that more than $10 million intended to help low income families pay for child care, was instead followed to fake daycare providers, according to federal authorities. 250 federal state and local enforcement officials arrested dozens of defendants, 12 search warrants were issued, homes that were, that we were told were being used as daycares, maybe not so much. According to the Department of Justice, defendants obtained a California license to operate a home child care facility, registered it with the Child Development Associates and the YMCA to provide subsidized child care to eligible families. But the DOJ goes on to say, the defendant's knowingly submitted false attendance records claiming they provided child care on dates and times when they did not. And they go on to say the DOJ does several defendants submitted attendance records claiming that they have provided child care at their homes when border crossing records show they were not even in the US.
The defendants are both naturalized US citizens and lawful permanent residents from places like Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan and Iraq. Two big announcements from the Trump administration investigating fraud and corruption and allegations of money missing in like a two day period focusing on Southern California. Okay, this is an interesting clip that I want to get to. You may have seen the clip between Jake Sullivan, the CNN host and Governor Newsom fly fishing in Montana, where Governor Newsom tells Jake Tepper, yeah, I'm not going to run for president if Kamala Harris decides to run. So that's been all over the place. It's about a two minute clip and they go back and forth. But there's more to this interview. And as part of this new interview, Governor Newsom admits that he regrets closing California public schools during the COVID pandemic. And the CNN host Jake Tepper reveals what Governor Newsom told him this is a preview of this interview on CNN.
But the truth of the matter is that a lot of people made mistakes during COVID. And you see Governor Newsom there, I think sincerely, most sincerely with that side, thinking about how much he regrets the schools closing and that there wasn't more that was done to reopen them. We see the damage that with that closing the schools obviously did to kids when it comes to education. That's interesting that he would say that. But because he was the one who shut him down and could he have not opened them up. I mean, he had that option. Did he not? It would seem that he could have done something about it a lot sooner. And then of course, you know, there's the whole French laundry incident in Northern California, one of the world's outstanding restaurants where he's seen their dining with friends at a time when he told the rest of us stay in your house. Don't go out. Don't go to restaurants. Don't go anywhere. Lockdown. So I'm sure that it's an episode that he now regrets because he didn't handle it very well.
And there were places like Florida where Governor DeSantis said, no, we're leaving our public schools open. We're not going to cut up in this. I don't know if you what do you think about these cybercams? Maybe you're driving around right now and you're thinking, not be kind of nice to be in a cyber cab. No driver. You might want to do a little bit of research on which ones you pick. Here's an interesting story out of Austin, Texas, a cyber cab passenger in Austin complained that what should have been a 10 minute trip devolved into a 70 minute long nightmare. The driverless cab started the journey by driving in the completely opposite direction of the destination for miles then turned around and took a massive detour through East Austin. So this rider posts online my cyber cab held me hostage for an hour. And the media outlet electric picked up on this according to electric. The reason the trip took so long is almost certainly because Tesla's cybercams cannot drive on highways yet. Did you know this?
Like other robot taxi services, the cybercams, which use a version of Tesla's full self driving software that has not yet been released to the public operate within a geofenced area that's been extensively mapped out. However, wemo, the leading robot taxi company, they allow their cars on highways in some cities. So picked very carefully, choose very wisely as they say. Okay, we got a lot coming up here in the next hour. I want to get into and more on this hearing where LA Mayor Karen Bass was invited speak but did not speak but the hearing went on anyway what they had to say about all of that is coming up straight ahead.
