And welcome to Juck on Bucks as promised, Lando back this week for week one. Landen, how are we doing, buddy?

3:06Don't well, Juck. Appreciate you having me on, man. Absolutely. I'm going to catch a flight. Lando is busy, but we promised that we were going to talk about this Texas game. And of course, we had to because, well, last week's show, Landen and I did the thumbnail had Ohio State's offensive line and said, best in the country. Question mark. And then they came out and laid that performance. First, Landen, I want to talk about the switch from a team that was 50, 50 gap zone. And they basically went exclusively zone in game one, 26 to two as an offensive lineman. Tell me the difference. What that means for a group of guys. Does that require more practice and more cohesiveness amongst the group? Is it something we're going to see consistently get better throughout the year? Yeah, look, so I mean, it was it was a lot of inside zone and outside zone. And I think the main thing for this is, I know we're going to get into this when you are running a lot of especially vertical zone schemes versus teams that like to move their defensive line and slant the front, which at this point is just about every single team in America.

4:16I mean, that is like the, that's what everybody does now. Everybody moves their front and stunts their front and plugs linebackers and scrapes the linebackers over the top when they move the front. So that is where I saw a lot of the problems for this Ohio State offensive line. And what's hard about it is especially when you're running really mid zone or inside zone. And you are trying to get vertical double teams, but the defense of line is moving horizontally. And so I think that's the that's the part that's really difficult about that because you get off levels with other guys because you're trying to move vertically and some guys don't get as vertical as others. And it makes it difficult. Now that's the thing about gap scheme that is generally a little bit easier because you're gap down backer. You have your gap. I think a lot of people think zone means you have your zone. It's honestly, it's the opposite really zone is a lot more. We have this guy, you know, we're on a bee block me, the left guard and left tackle are a bee block up to this linebacker. And that's what we're going to do. But then if he slants across my face, then it turns into that bee block. I need to know without any communication as that left guard that if he slants at that three tech slants.

5:25Well, now I have a combo block with my center and now we have an A block up to that same linebacker. And so there's a lot that that goes into that there's a lot of, you know, details and really being comfortable with the guy next to you. But, but I am outside zone. I love outside zone. I think that's where we hit a couple of the big runs to. You're starting to see more and more of the best offensive coordinators get away from inside zone in mid zone and not completely like you still have to have vertical runs. You can't not have vertical runs. But you're starting to see a lot more of outside zone. You're starting to see a lot more pin and pull. That's where you get a couple guys block down and you normally see a tackle and a center pull around that gets you out to the edge. And then you're seeing a ton of gap scheme. And once again, the best coordinators in college football have very diverse gap scheme. Just just playbooks where it's a lot of power. It's a lot of counter and they do a lot of things off of that to build into play action. So what I watched it was it was very clear to me that yeah, this is an incredibly heavy zone team. And I know we're going to get into it in a second.

6:31But I think that was a big reason as to why the so high offensive line struggled versus movement heavily against a ball state team. It's very disturbing to me that the conversation all last year from the Purdue game, the Wisconsin game into the Indiana game into the Miami game into the off season was what Tyler Bowen called you know dealing with elite movement. And we've now seen very uneleete teams beat his offensive line with this so called elite movement. This is something that was the talk of the off season for the offensive line. He added some more to practice to deal with the elite movement and you're telling me here that ball states movement was defeating the highest state offensive line. It's very disheartening as we head down to Texas here. Landon obviously Phil had a rough day. We talked about this offensive line and who they were going to start and which which package to go with. We pulled up the graphics. We did it several times over the off season. This was the one we thought they were going to go with with Phil Daniels at right tackle.

7:36We've seen Phil Daniels play good. We've also seen Phil Daniels not play good and it seems like when he doesn't play good. It's a real bad game. He had one of those real bad games. What did you take away from Phil's performance? Yeah, it was it was the same thing. Whenever I came on your show, not last but you know kind of late summer. Yeah, it was the same thing. So what we have here in past pro where I almost I've almost put out a tweet and I decided not to put it out. I said, I'll say I'll save it for juxtaple show. We have a guy who is border. It was borderline. I don't want to say like unusable in past pro, but we're getting to that point. So here's a couple things. Number one, him, him is a player as a human being like he does not he was not gifted with the ability of good balance. He does not have good balance. So within that his ability to recover is basically non existent. And I would say your ability at tackle to be able to recover when you're not in a perfect position and you're able to re anchor and refit your hands and reset your feet and hop back. That is one of the most important traits that there is that also falls into his ability to anchor. He does not have a good anchor.

8:40Now, it real quick what I will say to give him credit and a lot of people are going to say, well, he locked down Colin Simmons last year. I do want to talk about Colin Simmons real quick for a second. I know we're going to get to that. But the reason he locked down Colin Simmons is because Colin Simmons fits perfectly into what Phil Daniels is good at. And Phil Daniels is good at throwing his hands. He does throw his hands. He does have a confident punch. The problem is is that he drops his back right foot way too much and he gives such a soft edge. And there's a couple of reasons for that. When you were in your past set, you were supposed to push off of your post foot and essentially catch on your kick foot. What he does and when I slow it down on film, I can see it. He really pulls with his kick foot. So when that kick foot goes up and then it lands, he pulls with it. He pulls his front leg with him and there's times where I see he is fully off of the ground. Now it's for a quarter of a second, but he's still off of the ground. So that adds into his ability to be able to move and be able to react to any type of shimmy outside move that a defense of an gets him.

9:46It's really difficult. And then what else you what happens when you pull with that outside leg is you naturally open up because you're pulling yourself and that right leg starts to drop. And so that's what we saw. He was giving some of the softest softest edges I have ever seen against ball state. And I'm like, look, this is something I don't feel great putting him out there against Texas. Now what I will say. The thing about Colin Simmons is, Colin Simmons is not good with his hands. Colin Simmons is a ghost edgerusher. He loves the ghost move with ghost move is essentially he kind of fakes the long arm. He puts out the long arm and then he dips around the edge and he doesn't use his hands. And the reason why Phil Daniels was so good against that is because Phil even though he would drop that back foot, he would throw his hands and he would land them on Simmons and Simmons was just bending. And so he would just ride him around the edge. He was able to do that because Simmons was not good at using his hands. The other thing Simmons does is he kind of he loves the stutter to bull rush. And so a lot of times Phil Daniels is able to just throw his hands at Simmons and it was kind of over and that's the big reason I did watch some Simmons last year.

10:49But when I specifically watched him in week one, I kind of it jogged my memory of like, oh yeah, that's right. He doesn't use his hands. And that's why I do like Colin Simmons. I think he's a very talented player, but I would not label him as a elite edge. If you don't have good hands, you're not in the lead edge. I'm sorry. So that is why I think that, but also I still don't love that match up in this one still just because it looks like Phil has honestly regressed. And then you see the same thing in the run game. Look, he had a couple nice blocks where he was pan-kicking a ballstake defender. That's great. It was the same thing when dealing with movement where it looked like he was stuck in quick sand that big touchdown run by Jacobi Jackson. That should have been a TFL because what we had is we, we, I deed back to the backside backer. So we had a very vertical and basically back double team between Sarah Veld at right guard, Sarah Veld at right guard and Hinsman at center. And so what happened was is the front side linebacker is who Phil Daniels and the tight end were con going to and Phil takes his first step and the DN slants inside and Phil just left him and he just completely left him.

11:55So he thought that that he was going to have Sarah Veld with him. I don't know what exactly thought, but he just locked nobody and thank God it was ball state and Jacobi just made him miss. It wasn't really that hard to make him miss, but that that play should have never happened and it would have been filled in Phil Daniels fall. So there was a lot of, of, you know, first play of the game going the wrong way. Are you kidding me? So that that's where I just I shrug with Phil Daniels. Yes. The best quality brings is that he can be physical in the run game and I saw that against ball state at times. And really that as a whole, that is where the Ohio State offensive line did have success. And I'll just give you a quick rundown of my viewing of the run game against ball state. There was multiple runs. I'd say anywhere from four to five where the offensive line blocked everything up perfectly. I credit the ball state DBs on once it was a cornerback, but it was mainly the safeties. They filled downhill really quick and there was multiple times where everything was blocked up, but the DBs actually just made a tackle at like three or four yards into the line of scrimmage. And it is what it is. And a lot of times you say, oh, the offensive lines not blocking. Well, the safeties are almost never in the blocking scheme. If you get one on one with the safety, you're in a good place. So you put that to the side.

13:05And then I look and I say, hey, when ball state just played their gaps and they tried to two gap and everybody the defense of lineman tried to just put their hands in and play into the Ohio State offensive line. They they worked them. They smoked them off the bug Ohio State dominated them. And you know, I think also we're talking about a team that average what six point eight yards per carry. That's right. You know, I do want to put on perspective. It's not I think a lot of people want to have black and white answers and football is incredibly gray. And it wasn't just Ohio State was good or how state was bad or the inside zone was only good or only bad. And obviously there was different outcomes on every play. So I'm saying, okay, I really like whenever the defensive line is staying stagnant. That's when Ohio State did well. The problem then became is ball state very quickly realized that when we slant the front and then we we slant down and we scrapped the line backers over the top. A twist with the defense of tackle and the defensive and it gave them some real problems. There was one big run that I forget who was the ball carrier.

14:05But I'll tell you what the defensive and looped back over top and he was there to essentially make the place an outside zone run and whoever the running back was cut it vertical. He cut it back and we're we're five yards down the field. And there Carson Hensman had this this defense of end that looped back over the top right in front of them. And it was like are you going to block him and he did not block him. Thank God Chris Henry Jr. flies in and makes the block on it saves the play. And I think we popped it for like 40 or 50 yards. But saying all this to say there was a lot of runs that were big time runs that probably would not have been big time runs if it was not ball state where the offensive line messed up. But Ohio State is just overall that talented and you have talented running backs that made it a big run. But I was really worried about what I saw against movement in the run game. And like I said everybody moves and I broke down the Texas defensive line they are going to move and I think Will must champ after obviously watching that tape. I would guarantee he comes into this saying hey, this is a physical offensive line that get that will move you off the ball.

15:05If you just want to play into them. So we're probably not going to do that. We are probably going to move as much as possible. So that would be my prediction that Will must champ Texas defensive coordinator is going to say hey guys this is going to be a movement heavy game for our front seven on defense. Yeah, I don't see I mean obvious it's if my little sister was was trying to deduce how you would do this after if I just laid it out to her. Yeah, this this very inferior team did this. What's the really good team going to do if they do the same thing. Yeah, we're going to give him some elite movement if I'm Will must champ. Ryan day polls fill after two series and now you got this situation where you bring in Gabe Van Sickle. We thought it was going to be Padilla based on what day said coming in at guard and it wasn't it was Padilla or I'm sorry it was Van Sickle you move Daniels off and put Syrivald at right tackle. So it's kind of that option number or option B we talked about the offensive line laid out with Ian Moore and Austin Syrivald at tackle.

16:11And I don't know that it got tremendously better right off the rip but you have maybe some less less bad plays but the second half they did much better the point is as you roll into Texas Ryan they talked about the decision here that he's got to make. Obviously he's not letting anybody know what that decision is but the starting lineup what do you roll in there with and I know that. Gabe Van Sickle a lot of people recoil when they hear that name gave had such a terrible first half against Miami now. Gabe played good at certain points during the season you did a video about Gabe and broke down very good like what gave good at. And then I think that Gabe I think the moment in that Miami game his first start was so big they when it didn't start off good for him it just spiraled mentally they left him in the whole first half and it was just it was sad to watch because it was like this moment is just too big for this young dude. And it just kind of felt like it's spiral obviously he was overmatched as well but it just spiral spiral I think he's a damn good lineman and you have put it on tape what do you see out of Gabe that makes you think he could potentially you know not be what we saw against Miami.

And I'm like Indiana and then some other games that he played early on but I did fully on an Indiana breakdown. I'm like oh this is high level stuff like he's physical he's got a good punch he uses his hands well like I was on tape I showed it I'm like do I think he's going to be just fine. I kind of forgot like within the context of what he was going to have to play with him number one it was a huge moment I think the other thing is.

21:01He went up against I still feel confident saying that Miami defense of line that I think is the best defensive line of the 21st century specifically from a past rushing standpoint I don't remember last time there was ever two ed rushers taken from one team in the first round at least in the in the past 25 years I then you had defensive tackles that could pass rush like hell and it's not only that. They would the first sack they put a keen they have they have a keen mezzador Rubin Bane and I think it was light foot three defense events on one side of the field to that right side of the house they'd often to line and that was that first sack on Julian saying I'm telling you as an offensive lineman if I have a keen mezzador in a four I which means he's kind of right on the tackle but that's a wide set for a guard if I have that I would also shit my pants let me be very clear and say that and so it was it was clear that the moment was too big and after that first sack it was it was done. Mentally he was fried and then they ran more stunts and he was not at all the player that I saw on tape against Indiana or the player that I saw on tape even when he got in during you know during that big 10 schedule so I still like gave

22:05been sickle I'll say fans of course like you said that's all that you know you as I said earlier everybody kind of wants a black and white feel any question they have and the easy black and white feel is like I got destroyed against Miami I don't want to see him it was the best defense of line in a long ass time and in the moment was too big but I think this is a good offensive lineman I'm just sitting here and I just I just don't know if you can put Phil Daniels in and I think you know I think it was cervell that was asked about it and look it's a tough situation when you were asked about your teammate who you know and everybody can see with their own two eyes that he sucked and it's kind of you have to give whatever answer you can think up so I think there was some you know him talking about kind of nerves and that's what Sarah was was saying about him you know he's going to settle in all this stuff I just I just worry if he's in his own head now like it filled in his own head and I think a lot of times we think of this from a standpoint of like kickers being in their own head or quarterbacks being in their own head and affecting their game that can happen at offensive line too if you're not confident in your past

23:06process you were going to give the most crappy open up give the soft edge just give everything that the defense of end would want you're going to give that to him when you're not confident in your game and so that's what I'm so worried about Phil Daniels I said that yeah he obviously did have a good performance from against Colin Simmons last year but I also think that was a much more confident Phil Daniels where is that right now and the fact you see what's happening online like everybody that's my age now we're Gen Z we are chronically online yeah I mean there's some guys that say they don't look everybody does unless you truly delete social media which would probably be a good idea for anybody that has a bad game good year I would highly recommend that but we were Gen Z is basically addicted to social media so there's no way he's not seeing what's being said that affects him mentally too so now he is thinking negatively negatively of himself and so yeah listen I just I don't like the snowball effect that is probably happening to Phil Daniels right now once again a lot of that is speculation on my part but a lot of that is me

24:10thinking back to kind of you know putting myself in his shoes having lived kind of that life before and it can when it starts to get bad it almost only gets worse so if you do put him out there I don't like it but you quick to pull him if things go bad quickly and you just see that this guy's confidence is shot he need you need a quick hook on on Phil Daniels and get him the hell out of there and a quick hook exactly what they didn't have with van sickle in the Miami game went on the whole first half I think that maybe they learned their lesson there as we saw Phil come out after two series in game one which surprised me that they that they had to hook that quick in kind of a non consequential game like you knew you're going to win let him work through it did come back in and it didn't get any better but with all the subplots in this game you know how state win three in a row arch versus saying what they do here at right tackle to me is maybe the biggest story of the year because if they can't get this figured out in

25:15this you know not so really handles them up front no matter what they go with on that right side I think you know you're probably adjusting expectations for what the ceiling is for this team and that goes back to not doing anything in the transfer portal on the offensive line which is a decision that they made and they were confident in this unit and if that doesn't work out man it's going to look like a real egg on the face lack of action to roll back in with the same guys you had and it's not going to look good land and by the way I supported that decision to not go to the portal so I did two I did two but like I'm so hindsight twenty twenty like I get it but it is tough looking back the fact that you didn't go out and just get one tackle that you know go pay for a melvin see on it who you're going to see this weekend they you know I had Texas one other thing to note I am a fan of Austin cerebell what I will tell you is this guy he has let's say career snaps he's around 1200 career snaps on the left side you know he

26:18has 220 snaps at right guard and then he has 15 snaps at right tackle that all came I believe in that game it is very different for an offensive lineman to be majority one side of the offensive line and then completely switched the other side so I think there's also a factor because everything is different you're put you know a lot of guys have used independent hands you're you're you're a big like outside first inside underneath or you have whatever you like to do you're you're used to pushing off of your right foot you know I talked about that that kick foot and how it's supposed to work it's the complete opposite on the right side so if you want something that you you can feel when you're taking a number two try to wipe with the other hand what that's what it feels like everybody's got a wiping hand that's what it feels like when you switch the other so I don't want to I'm not trying to panic everybody but that's another aspect of I would I would feel comfortable saying once again this is an assumption that Austin cerebell is not going to be as good of a right tackle as he is at left tackle because he was comfortable there

27:18and he has a million reps on that side of the line of scrimmage so I just wanted to throw that into the equation as well. 28:19a positive one thanks for bringing that up to another thing to worry about this game looking at the other side of the ball the Ohio state defensive line with you know a different look we thought we were going to come out here with bow at consent across from Kenyatta Jackson instead it's sophomore Zion Grady who played a really good game looked good he and at consent had 19 snaps of piece so they played kind of even Stephen we saw the defensive line I thought of the interior guys James Smith looked the best of them but they all look pretty solid including Jason Moore a deep rotation the linebackers looked really good that defense looks legit as hell to me and I'm really excited for that match up against arch and Hollywood smothers and relief Brown and Coleman like this is going to be a real test to these guys early and should they be able to handle these dudes pretty well when I look at this game I don't see Texas being able to keep up with the Ohio state offense if that offensive line is just

29:21doing pretty good I feel like Julian saying the connection between him and his wide receivers his next level his leadership the control he has of the offense overall linen I think the buck eyes go down there and win by a touchdown do you have an overall prediction for how this thing plays out oh that's a good one one one thing I will say about this defense so Texas is going to run I think when I was watching four or five times I explained pin pull earlier there was a lot of times when they did run inside zone relief Brown Hollywood smothers they love to bounce it outside they love to press press press vertical bounce it outside one thing that the Ohio state defense looked elite at and really has been elite at is boxing the run in they do a great job of making sure that we are going to hold contain and we're going to force the running back inside to where the rest of our troops are so I think that's something that's really positive positive how about how about three four on that defense young three four young 34 looks like a little bit of a dude Jack let me tell you what the Jersey's on the wall brother listen where am I

30:27going with this I didn't even thought about a prediction yet man I'll tell you what watching the Texas offense the offensive line their offensive line did look fairly good there were definitely some lapses in that Texas state the Texas Texas state upfront on both sides of the football gate issues I mean they outrushed them on offense and I broke that down on my film breakdown of showing like hey here's all the different stuff that Texas does upfront on the defensive side but they got they got they got smoked a little bit there were times where they crease them and they they took their defensive tackles off of the football so that's what makes me even say even more they they have one defensive tack and we can talk about him Ian Jeff Rard who is a transferably from Arkansas is the 380 pound defensive tackle 65 mass of human being I was incredibly impressed on that video I show how it is not easy to move him so I think that's one guy that it's not going to be easy to move but the the other guys I think you're going to be able to move them off the football and that is why I said I kind of expect for them to say hey we're we're going to constantly slant and move because this

43:00like dude you're well i forget what his stat line was but i mean it was absolutely horrific he's like no i you know it was it was you know i did it to myself basically i'm like what are you talking about it was dude it's just it's so easy he makes it so easy to root against him that it's it's just ridiculous and i did a film breakdown and i actually went back and i looked at a bunch of stats of rice underwooden and basically the the consensus that i found is that all defensive coordinators that go against him are not blitzing you look at western Michigan i think it was 26 dropbacks and they only blitzed on five or six of those dropbacks because they said hey we're gonna drop seven we're gonna drop eight and make rice underwood beat us and make him process our defense and he couldn't pff gave him five turnover worthy plays and i'd say maybe even could add a sixth on there from with a tape i watched like it was bad it was really bad so i mean i have no confidence in in what he is going to do i would just i would just i would have said i would let the timey car at this point i realized that winning him is in a really tough place because of

44:06all the money you gave to him this is also another lesson don't be given out these huge contracts to these these young guys that that have not proven themselves you know especially something that big especially at the time i mean now it's a little bit different the top quarterbacks were getting paid five six million dollars a year in some instances but back when he got that 12 million dollar deal like that was unheard of that was crazy and and you see what comes with that and i guarantee you imagine being 17 years old and knowing you have that for the next three years you think it's gonna be easier at bs a little bit you think it's gonna be easier and i'm not saying i know i don't know price under what i don't know what he does in his off time but i'm just saying of someone who who was 17 18 months and i wasn't really paid much but i would i would rest on my laurels a little bit if i knew i had all that money i instead of going to grind the taper go you know throw extra in the facility yeah i'll turn on the ps5 chill out a little bit so you know i don't know i just this offense is back i i thought i think a lot of people thought back was going to come in the offensive coordinator mission and really help them out it does not look much better at all

45:10i think they need to go in this Oklahoma game they need to find him some easy throws they need to move the pocket they need to give him a lot of play action boot where he rolls out and he has an over route he has a flat route or he can take off and run like we need to give him decisive decisions to be able to make do not ask him to drop back and read in Oklahoma defense where when i study Brent Venable's defense he does stuff that isn't even a isn't even real like coverages he does so many mixed coverages of man and zone and when i watched the game last year it was like i mean talk about Bryce Underwood's head spinning looking at these coverages he thought he saw something and it was not that and it almost turned into multiple turnovers so make my consensus of that video really is Venables blitz Bryce underwood on 65% of his dropbacks last year in that week two game which makes sense it's hey we're going to go all these disguise coverages we're going to throw blitzes at this young guy that was his own first big start really and so it made sense basically what i say as Venables don't do this and i show multiple instances in which all that blitzing could have

46:11got Oklahoma in some trouble but obviously it was you know a young quarterback and no i don't think Bryce has progressed much at all but at the same time i'm saying don't even give him the ability to maybe be able to make a play because you want to blitz sit back let your front four rush the pass or especially because Oklahoma is a damn good defense and force Bryce Underwood to beat you and real quick when you look at the stats Bryce Underwood is significantly better when blitzed which is kind of funny because most quarterbacks numbers kind of fall off a cliff when they're blitz he is wildly bad I mean touchdown interception ratio is actually a positive ratio when he's blitz is pass rating is like 15 percentages higher all of it so that that's kind of my overall consensus on this game but I don't know what Vegas knows to have that line at five and a half I don't know I have a feeling it might just be close out of nowhere I don't know if Michigan just fully looked over her top of western Michigan and tried to keep too much of the game plan out of that game and they went into it and they said oh crap and once you kind of go into a game with a game plan
