We're back from Australia week two is upon us. It's time to learn from the pig skin professor. Hello. Good morning. Welcome to washers playbook presented by prize picks. That's the pig skin professor, former Raiders, offensive coordinator Tom Walsh. I'm Grant Cohen. We do this every week during the season Thursday mornings, usually looking ahead and back at the same time. Let's start by looking back at week one against the Rams. The Niners, you and I thought the Rams would win. They didn't really show up. So it's kind of tough to say exactly how good the Niners are were,

but they actually they showed up. They were there a week early. They were ready to play and they looked really good. What did you see from their offense in particular new new extra see for in Mike Evans new backup running back who actually gets to play in Kaelin Black. Would you see? You know, Grant, I thought the most remarkable aspect of the whole production of that 49er gain was descript that Kyle turned loose on the Rams. I thought his orchestration of motion, shift, movement and then the utilization of multiple weapons in the first 10 snaps for the Niners was something that is unkyle since the arrival of McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers when they made the trade. And you and I discussed this ad nauseam for years. There's too much of a dependence by Kyle on McCaffrey in the first 12 15 plays of the game. And in fact, some

games when you chart things, nine of the first 11 12 snaps had McCaffrey as the focal point. And the great thing I saw the other day watching that ball game was how Kyle made sure the ball went to other people and he got other players involved in the game. And then also as an added bonus, he was not afraid to take McCaffrey off the field and substitute him and bring in the rookie. And the great thing we've discussed this before with the Niners being a little bit long in the tooth with their age, Kyle cannot overuse and overwork his aging players too much early in the season and then they're not going to make it to the end. And so you know, he can't run him like mags and then expect them to be a thoroughbred when he wants to win the championship or secure a playoff verse. And so I thought that was the most greatest maturation in Kyle as a head coach,

as a coordinator, was how he changed his whole quote unquote personality per se in how they structured the offensive game plan and the utilization of the person out. Yeah, it seemed like what they showed in this game, if you can beat the Rams by 20, then you could probably win the Super Bowl. Like you have a team that's good enough to beat any team if you're prepared and healthy. So once again, with the Niners, the question is, can you keep yourself healthy enough throughout the long season to stay a contender? And a lot of that depends on themselves. A lot of that depends on Kyle Shanahan and it's fair to be skeptical like, well, I mean, he's been overusing Christian McCaffrey for years. Is this finally going to be the year that he changes? And it looks like based on week one, the answer is yes. Now, what's interesting is like in practice this year, yesterday was Wednesday, the first practice of the week. A lot of the veterans don't practice on Wednesday. McCaffrey, Kittle, Trent Williams, Bosa, I believe my

Evans does, but there's a bunch of older players that the Niners need to pace and not overuse, especially in September and October to give themselves the best chance to be competitive in January. And it seems like maybe they get that. I mean, what do you, they're definitely leaning on my Evans up. Well, the key thing is leaning on head in what situations. See, here's the thing. I'm not going to waste a snap throwing a past them like Evans when it's inconsequential when it's but it's a third down situation or as we discussed earlier when they made the acquisition with him, if I can get him down in the low red zone, especially where a ball for him is going to give me six points, that's much better in my book than throwing him a first and 10 play action pass for 12 yards out in the middle of the field. Impact is important. So when I utilize my Kevin, I want him to have the greatest impact in terms of extending the drive and putting points on the scoreboard, not just getting the eight to 10 12 yard completion and making it, you know, either another first

and 10 or making it second and three or second and two. So the key thing for me with Mike Evans is knowing he's got limited snaps in his body. I've got to make the place I call with him as my focus player, meaningful to the production of the offense and especially to the team. And that's either third down situation to extend and continue drives or down in the low red zone when I can get six points. What do you think of Kaylyn Black? You know, I tell you, I think he's better than a lot of the so-called football gurus and evaluators thought that he would be, you know, actually when he was back at James Madison as a running back with Signeti before they moved to Indiana, the kid was a pass catcher. He did, he does well pass blocking. So I mean, I have nothing but high hopes for the kid. And I think his performance versus the Rams showed

the rest of the team as well as hopefully the coaching staff for the Niners that they can have more confidence and his ability to get on the field and be productive and more meaningful situations rather than just as a sub to give McCaffrey a blow. Do you feel like using like Black as a, try this again, do you feel like using a running back committee and really committing to actually having Black in the game plan will pay off for McCaffrey and bring, I mean, all of a sudden McCaffrey looked dangerous for the first time in two years. Was that just because the Rams were tired or do you feel like he had a little bit more juice because he didn't have to carry the ball 20 times? Well, not only that in terms of what he did in the game, but I think his pre training camp, in training camp ritual did a lot to keep more gas in his tank to come game day. You know, not every player needs to be rep the death and practice to get it. That's a classic case is, you know, we had this guy then bow Jackson as a running back but he played

baseball, okay? He showed up. He never made it to a mini camp, never made it to OTAs, never made it to a training camp. He showed up maybe the eighth, ninth week of the season when the A's or Royals or for whomever he was playing, no white socks were out of the playoffs. And so you had to monitor the reps who gave him in practice. And so I'd run a play with him on a pass pattern, for example, we'd run it one time. It said, you need to have this done again. You need another repeat if no, I got it. So I'm not going to run the same practice, the pattern and practice four or five times to bow just to run it. If he's got it done in one snap, hey, that's it. With the correct quarterback, the timing set, the deep venture going to see from the opponent. So what the guy of that talent and the talent of McCaffrey and the experience that he has in the league, I don't need direct use of death in practice. Give me one perfect snap and execute it and time it up. And hey, now it's locked into your muscle memory. Let's load it up and go.

So the first pick, Dejan Stribling, who had such a good preseason and training camp goes down and almost immediately in this game, the Niners misdiagnosis injury, put him back in the game, makes it worse, card it off, has surgery, probably not going to see him for a while. Well, we know we won't see him for at least 10 weeks. In his absence, DeMarcus Robinson steps up, catches a long touchdown pass, Debo Samuel steps up and has like six catches. That was my least favorite signing of the offseason, Debo. He seemed like he played, I mean, he seemed like he's bought into whatever the Niners want him to do this year. What do you think about those two older wide receivers? Well, you know, they're not a receiver who's going to really flash all the time, but they have enough experience and enough maturation as performers in the league and they have done it previously to where you can call upon them in certain situations and expect them to be able to bucket up and be able to produce for you in situational football rather than down and then down out. And that's where your substitution is key. I'm not going to have

Debo out there for meaningless snaps. I'm not going to have DeMarcus Robinson out there for stretching his legs just to run out and blow out the top of an offense, a defense and run a nine route when it's basically taking the coverage off the top of the defense. I'll put in another guy for that and save him for a play when I want him to be fresh. I want him to be exposed. I want him to have his legs win for me. So key substitutions going to be you can't let him sit out there and play 64 snaps and think that they're going to be fresh when you need him in the fourth quarter. Last question on the offense, we've talked about the skill position players in the play collar. The quarterback had a good game. He had a really good off season in a really good training camp didn't really play much in the preseason and came in here and outplayed Matthew Stafford, who's old and maybe see it was a little tired. Who knows? What did you see from Brock? Is this, does it look like he's taken a step? Is this the Brock you've always known? What do you think? You know, for the most part, he was making good decisions. That one interception I could cringe

because when he watched the in zone and you look at the play from his eyes, there was no chance for that pass to be completed and there was no underneath receiver to try to hold the coverage in the defender's sunk right underneath the throw. But I tell you the thing about him, which is a benefit is his legs when he gets outside the pocket and then his scrambles. He is a very adept runner. You know, he's not of the Lamar Jackson class, you know, that kind of a guy. But he can gain you those key yards when you think the play could be dead all of a sudden. He's outside the pocket on the edge and he can do a little bit with his speed and he has, you know, football functional speed, not great speed. But he can get you a first down with his legs when you need it and his bootleg skills put more pressure on the defense because you've changed the set of spot for him. So you can't always just rush like a blind man to a spot behind the center at seven to nine yards behind the line and

you're not going to find him there like you're going to find staffer there. And that's important. Yeah, when I assessed Brock Pretty to me, his mobility or scrambling ability or elusiveness, whatever you want to call it is probably the trade I like the most about him. I mean, it's not his only good trade is a lot of good trace. But I don't see him as like the next jubilee, someone who can just stand in one spot in the pocket and dice you up with a bunch of decisions he makes before the snap. That's not necessarily Brock Pretty. I think he's a really, really mobile quarterback. And I like that he actually, I want to share something that really caught my attention as a parent. I've learned that myopia near-sightedness is becoming much more common in kids. And it's not something you want to ignore. If it goes unchecked, it can have an impact that goes way beyond schoolwork. What really matters is starting with an eye exam. An eye doctor can tell you what's going on with your child's vision and walk you through options that are designed specifically for kids like Esselaer Stellist lenses. I like that Stellist lenses are made for children and fit right into

everyday life. They look like regular glasses, but they're part of a more thoughtful approach to managing myopia. If you're a parent and you've been meaning to book an eye exam, this is your sign. A bill for a limited time of participating restaurants tax not included not valid for use within a combo or in combination with any other offer or discount. It was aggressive with that. He ran five times in this game. He got some key first downs. I kind of I'm interested to compare him to Jackson Dart. I feel like they have similar skill sets and it's interesting to see how John Harbour and Greg Roman are using Jackson Dart. They really ran him a lot in that game and it was effective. Who do you think is a more talented quarterback? Perne or Dart? I think they're different in several respects. Both used their legs. I think Rock and I don't want to say this in a derogatory fashion. I think Rock's football IQ and his understanding of when to run and how to avoid contact is way more prevalent in his game. Jackson Dart right

now still has that college gung ho attitude where he still thinks that he could be Macho Man and you know remember when Jimmy Garoppolo against the chiefs going down the left side line? decided he would take on a chief guy as opposed to shoulder. Yeah he lowered his shoulder and what happened? His knee blew out. Eddie got splattered. Yeah. Yeah and that's where Jackson Dart is that kind of mindset right now. Yeah he needs to be smart about how it when to go down and how not to take the hit and he still quote unquote his ego is still involved in his decision making process about how to keep himself healthy where Brock has got it figured out. That's true Brock. One of the other great things about Brock is not just his mobility but the fact that he has the temperament of like a 53 year old. He's just so mature. I also talked defense. It's a brand new defense where he Morris came in. I was not confident in his

ability to lead a strong defense. I thought he was going to get really gashed by the run game and 13 personnel which he did to an extent but the Niners had the lead and he really took advantage. Matthew Stafford was not comfortable at any point during this game. It seemed like really Morris had his number and McBay's number. What do you see from Morris's new look defense? We know the thing is I don't think if Sean McVay looks back at the game plan and says how can I learn from this and what can I do next week or the weeks after that will make more of a difference? I think that it should have hung with the run game a little bit more. Stay with this 13 personnel. I really challenged them because the Rams did gashed and Niners a couple of times with big personnel in the game, that 13 personnel with three tight end package. I think their mistake was going away from it too quickly. The game was not out of hand in the first half but a very

small differential at halftime. I think that the Rams got away from quote unquote their character that they should have been employing and that helped Morris. I tell you the one thing about it is I still have a concern about the Niner defense between the two defensive tackles. That's the one place where I think teams can probe the Niner defense and how are they going to handle the runs between the tackles. When you get into your big personnel I spread out the face of your defensive front. Why everybody out there? Extra gaps now. I've created some holes. You can't play a cover two shall they can't play a cover four shall. When I go 13 personnel from an offensive perspective I'm dictating to the defense that they've got to bring down more players into the box. And see that's like you can't sit there in the cover four shall or cover too high and expect that you're going to take away nine gaps from the offensive perspective when you only

have seven defenders. That's going to make you bring down more players and load the box defensively to be able to match up to be able to plug all the gaps. Now you're more of a single safety high via the three deep scheme or man free concept or three backer concept any of those shalls that show you a single safety high because you need those extra run defenders. It seems to me like the idea with Rahim Morris's defense in the context of this team is to be complimentary. Like if the Niners have a lead and their offense is really clicking and scoring then it seemed like he can do a good job of playing from a lead and you know he doesn't have to worry about stopping the run because they're up by a touchdown or two and he can focus on disguising coverages and bringing pressure or whatever. But if the Niners offense is struggling I wonder like if his if that run defense issue that you're talking about could cost them against teams that really aren't as good as them. Well Grant the thing about it is scoreboard can dictate

in a lot of respects about how more more calls is defense. So on your up by you know 10 points 14 points the opposing team is going to throw the ball a little bit more. So therefore your run defense does not get exposed as much. You're worried about screens and draws and once in a while you know a zone play but if it's an even ball game or if the opponent happens to be up a little bit now they can lean on their run game more and now Morris's front seven is going to be called on the carpet so to speak to be able to shut down the opposition otherwise they're going to just keep running the ball and keep moving the sticks and then navigate down the field without the presses of having to make throws to move the chains and to keep a drive alive. And so then his play calling will have to change a little bit. I want to ask you about a trend that was prevalent in the in the lead week one. We saw with the Niners they've been doing this for a while straight drop backs from under center.

The shotgun there's under center play action passes and for a while it seemed like that's with the two things you would see in the NFL like the the old school Raiders Niners just under center three step five step seven step drop with no play action kind of got phased out of the league a little bit but we saw Brock Purdy seven step drop from under center to to Marcus Robinson for the long touchdown and then another time from his own end zone out to George Kittle in the flat. Other teams been doing a lot all of a sudden Lamar Jackson's under center doing straight drop backs it looks like 1987 out there we know we've you would have been talking for more than a decade about how there are no real new ideas in the NFL things are just cyclical so how did we get to the point where straight drop backs from under center are giving defenses problems like this is something that's been around and what are what are offenses searching for here. Okay the bottom line for an off-amps is okay how can I structure a package or place that will give the quarterback

a better opportunity to be able to read the secondary did you determine where he's going to go with the ball I remember Dan Fouts one day telling me that with the chargers back in the air Coriel they had five guys out in the pattern all the time okay Dan says you know what I cannot wait to left of the ball hits my hands and still have five guys in the pattern so my pre-snap read is I've got to eliminate at least two guys before the ball even hits my hand okay if I'm in the shotgun and I'm tracking the ball coming from the center my eyes are not on the secondary my eyes are not looking at the the sky's packages I'm losing that valuable time where my vision's down and then all of a sudden now the ball hits my hands I've got to get my eyes back up and say okay where are they now and whereas if I'm under center and I'm taking the snap directly from the center to my hands

my vision can stay down the field I can see all the disguises I could do a process of elimination so that by the time the ball hits my hands I've gone from five guys out in the pattern to three guys I'm going to consider it in my progression and but I tell my get back to my setup spot me to five step or seven step drop I'm down the two guys so then now I'm much more efficient because I'm I don't have to wait till after I get to my setup point and then diagnose where I'm going to go with the ball I'm not deciphering and translating the defense into language that I can comprehend I've already done that with my pre snap my snap in my hands and in my drop as I'm dropping so now I'm down to making a decision between a and b when I set my feet up so now the ball will be out in addition you and I have talked about you don't want to get tendon seed as an offense you don't want to be an always or a never offense and I think the way it's evolved in the NFL is like if a quarterbacks under center you can pretty or at least until this year like you can pretty much bank that he's

going to turn his back one way or another he's either going to hand it off or he's going to play action in the NFL so now it's like when the quarterbacks under center that's inviting defenses to disguise coverages rotate coverages because the quarterbacks going to turn his head and have to find figure out what happened so now you can like make defenses have to prepare for the under center drop back actually we're not always going to have our quarterback turn his back to the defense when he's under center actually we might go straight drop back like it's 1987 and you better be prepared for that it seems like because I asked Kyle saying a hint yesterday what advantage he's looking for and he talked about that like just not wanting to be so predictable under center you know the thing about it is this past weekend on first and 10 situations across the league on first and only I think there was over 66% of the snaps on first and 10 across the league or with the quarterback under under center it's so interesting yes it's like a 20% bump from even last year and the other

thing now think about it if I'm under center and Bill Wall should be so happy well he went there's timing doesn't really exist in the shotgun right because your drop is a quarterback in the gun is one step pushback at a shuffle step and gather and that doesn't mesh and time up whereas if I'm under center I can have for example in a three step passing game I can have a quick three I can have a big one and two I can have a big three depends upon the quick concept I'm running when I go to a five step passing game under center I can have a three and two drop I can have a big five drop I can have a fast five drop when I throw the bang eight concept that the Cowboys threw for years with Michael Ackman and Troy Ackman and Michael Urban and so I've got all those different types of drops and then plus under center I've got a greater play action mechanism working for me

I can get a much cleaner and longer ride on my play action fake because the tail backs coming from several and a half yards deep I'm working back the him he's working forward so I could theoretically hide the ball better from the deep bass whereas when I'm in the gun it's like okay think about it this way when I give you an open face sandwich at the restaurant you can see what you got that's like being in the gun yeah if I'm in the center now it's like you have a closed sandwich you got another piece of bread on top so you really don't know what's exactly in between the two pieces of bread I can have better ball fake I can hide the ball better you know it's more like a potential mystery as opposed to the open face opportunities of the shotgun you don't have the play action fake that you don't have the ride and you can't sell and the other thing about it is if I'm under center and I front out as a right-hander you know the other thing about Bill that was really

great and we used to talk about this all the time never have a right-handed quarterback have to make face to his left never have a left-handed quarterback make face to his right I want to share something that really caught my attention as a parent I've learned that myopia near-sightedness is becoming much more common in kids and it's not something you want to ignore if it goes unchecked it can have an impact that goes way beyond schoolwork what really matters is starting with an eye exam and I doctor can tell you what's going on with your child's vision and walk you through options that are designed specifically for kids like Esselaer Stellist lenses I like that Stellist lenses are made for children and fit right into everyday life they look like regular glasses but they're part of a more thoughtful approach to managing myopia if you're a parent and you've been meaning to book an eye exam this is your sign visit Esselaer.com to learn more about Stellist lenses and to find an Esselaer expert eye care professional near you do you have a work injury DTLA log group California's

and then his head and eyes stayed up the field you know if you the funny thing about it is he had Joe Montana and all the play fakes were open faced right handed for Joe then all of a sudden he puts on Steve Young in the game now all of a sudden the whole thing flips to the other side all the fakes are to the left side where Steve's coming out front and out face out to the left and it you go back and you watch them play and yeah it's but the efficiency see eventually grant the problem is you might try to be more scientific and more cute and designs and everything but how productive are you in terms of your efficiency of your quarterback operating under those games when you get away from what is the best theoretical for the quarterback the efficiency that you get sure I'm going to repeat my play action fake well you know the efficiency with which I operate that only gets better with the more usage of that up the place the sequence in the design

and I have a more effective office for people who are a little bit younger who maybe grew up watching um the NFL the last 20 years you're very familiar with the shotgun and you might not realize it if you go back and watch highlights of Joe Montana and Steve Young and Bill Walsh's offense or uh Mike Honegren's offense or even Mike Shanahan's offense in 1999 you will never see them in the shotgun you will never see it didn't happen and so what's what it looks like out here now is finally the return of the actual West Coast offense you know what I interviewed Denny Green a few months before he passed away rest in peace and I asked him like to define the West Coast I was doing this a story about the West Coast offense I'm like well how would you define it you were like well it was the the precision of this three step the five step and the seven step drop and having everything tied up off those things from under center I guess he felt from before then there were still drops from under center but it was less precise people would back out or they would you know just wander backwards but from Denny's perspective it was the precision of the three the five and the

seven step drop and that's what we're seeing uh across the league right now it's kind of funny how the defenses have caught up to all the new age stuff and now they have to teach their players have to how to stop the stuff you were calling once upon a time for Jim Plunkett. Well you know and the other thing too about it now let's be honest a lot of these quarterbacks in this day and age and the league have grown up in high school and college football where they never have taken a snap under center right you know the Raiders drafted this kid from named Mendoza from Indiana who had been a cow earlier before the transfer portal thing kicked in and he was in the shotgun almost his entire senior season at Indiana now the Raiders have to spend training camp in the OTAs and everything multiple repetitions for Mendoza taking snaps under center and you know it's a process and I think about the timing as you mentioned and about which the West Coast concepts was Sid and Bill and those guys go way back I want the quarterback to be able to drop gather banged

the balls coming out I want the receiver to be at the breaking point and have the ball on the way to him I don't want him standing down the field while the quarterback is still dropping waiting for the ball or I don't want the quarterback to be standing at his set up position waiting for the wider receiver or the tight end to get to his breaking point so by missioning it up the timing of the plant and break at the open spot for zone or running away from a defender and man to man times up with the quarterback drop from the West Coast concept so you know you hit your back foot you gather you pat your feet bang balls out and you don't have that shotgun no you don't bill would be I feel like if bill were alive he'd be saying this for the last 20 years like come on why why why is the whole league going just why is the you can't run the balls well from the shotgun the timing isn't as good in the passing game and finally someone figured out this year and bills like that's what I'm talking about anyway let's do some let's do some prize picks we got Niners dolphins week one

the Niners are 13 and a half point favorites do you like the Niners or the dolphins to cover which one 13 and a half points you're saying to cover you know I think like the Niners should cover the key thing is are they going to recover from your Australian trip to be able to cover the points better they get a bounce back get back into their normal sleep patterns and their normal routines and be fresh enough you know I'm still tired with the dolphins I think they should really they should they got a few more days Brock Perty 238 and a half passing yards more or fewer the hardest thing with the rock throwing the ball is they don't have that home run receiver that I can take a five step drop and bam throw a nine route and I'm going to have a 55 45 60 yard touchdown pass that's the one thing that kills the Niners they have to have a series of throws for

Perty to get his yardage so I see the I think they'll have more but not because of the big play but that his hyper sandwiches of completion will give him a yardage good call and struggling was supposed to be that guy but he'll be out for at least the next 10 weeks or how about Christian McAfrie 58 and a half rushing yards more fewer I'll say he'll get over 58 he's not going to break 100 but I tell you he'll be in the 60s or low 70s okay I agree and then Malik Willis 36 and a half rushing yards and Niners historically have had an issue with rushing quarterbacks they've a new defensive coordinator what do you think 36 and a half more fewer I will say more for him interesting I just think about it is Miami doesn't have a stable of weapons offense they got a shame the running back but he don't against the Raiders a shame only gained 36 yards on like 11 or 12 carries so he didn't light it up either that's true we're gonna against the Raiders all right we're gonna flex it we're gonna we're gonna power play put a hundred dollars down to win 625

simple is that go to app dot price picks dot com or download the price picks app new users use promo code hma play five bucks and get a hundred and 15 line ups if you win and then we're also sponsored this week by what not it's this app where you can buy n64 games or football cards or sporting goods or shoes it's a cool place to get golf clubs if you lose if you leave them on the course which I do all the time it's kind of like the home shopping network but there's a million different networks and you can click it let's go to football cards you could click in on whatever show seems to be interesting at that time packs with Mary seems great just opens packs you buy I mean it's a community aspect you get to see the the cards before you buy them and the sellers really know their stuff so get $20 off your first purchase right now just search what not that's wh a t n o t in the app store download sign up and start finding the things you've been chasing

I bought something earlier today it's going to get shipped to me soon and I'll show you what it is when I get it all right Tom are the Niners the team to beat in the NFC I mean they just beat the team that people thought was the team to beat in the NFC so does that now make the Niners the team to beat you know I think as long as they're healthy and Kyle keeps them pulled on a quote fresh especially from an offensive perspective I think you've got to consider them a serious contender you know and we had talked about which teams we thought would be playoff bound and you know my surprise team this year I told you before I thought the NFC I thought the Rams and then my team I really think it was going to just lighten that was the Chicago Bears and a lot of people laughed and I saw the the Bears and the Rams playing in the NFC title game and the Fields and the Broncos playing in the

AFC title game and I tell you know you can't sell the Bears short I take you know they got a great head coach who's a brilliant office of mine he's a dollar one of those guys who is right up there in the Kyle Shanahan school of success offensively with design and you know they hung 59 points on the Panthers in opening week and he probably wished he could have had 60 or more but you know I just I remember one time against the Broncos you know we put 48 on the board I got a note from Al Hey okay you've made your point let's just back off let's get on the plane and go home we don't need to go to 55 you don't need 52 or whatever just let's wrap it up and see now days coaches and don't think that way anymore they want to hang 70 on you if they can back in the day we wanted to just have enough to secure the win they get the heck off the field get on the bus and go to the airport and go home now they you know Ben Johnson's going to want to put up 72 so there are other teams that are in the Niners class but I like what you said too like they they've shown what they can do

and what they can be and really a big thing for them is how Kyle Shanahan keeps certain players fresh and then I'll take it another step further how their training staff protects certain players when they get injured I mean this thing with the stripling is just amazing to me and if they had lost to be a bigger deal but the fact that he got injured went to the blue tent and they clear them and he went back in and and he's still hurting and he may have made it worse and now we need surgery they can't have that kind of make that they can't have these mess ups they can't have any more of these and it's like they did it with Brock last year when he had the toe injury and he was back two weeks later when he shouldn't been they got to be careful with their players well the key thing too as a coach you go to the trainer and or the trainer comes you and say hey so and so is out you know we need to check them out we got to put him in the tent and it's out of your hands as a coach so yeah your training staff your doctors your evaluation skills of those people during the ballgame are critical and you know I just can't believe that the diners have been

hamstrung by quote unquote very questionable medical practices and procedures for so many years and nothing has changed it's the strangest thing I mean in a lot of ways the diners organization under Kyle Sanahean and John Lynch is excellent in a lot of ways but how do you have the worst training staff I mean it's not like that's my opinion the their players vote on this stuff in the NFL PA thing and consistently the training staff is at the worst in the league and like it seemed like their grade goes down every year and the diners say oh no we take it seriously we're going to add hydrotherapy no no no no no no no whole new training staff or I mean I don't know that's what I would do well there comes a point in time when they need to bring in okay here's the other thing if you're not equipped within your own organization to evaluate the training staff for those people who you may want to hire to put in the training staff I would go out and find the best mind the most

brightest for thinking type of individual or people in a creative panel I would bring them into the hiring process let them be in charge of the screening the evaluation and the interview process of people to be the next trainer to be the next team doctor to be you know I would open it up and say okay who are the experts across this land who are capable and let them be involved in the process if I'm Sanahean you know how many intelligent questions can I ask a potential candidate to be the head trainer and why would you be so married to one training staff I mean I'm sorry but there's if you have a consistent issue every year you could just go to a team that doesn't have that issue and hire someone from that training staff and see how it goes it just seems strange to act like this group is so integral to what they've been doing but I don't know strange well the other thing is I got to look at the facilities what amenities do I have what are our procedures

and then you can look at the thing about well let's look at the hydration practice that's good the rest cycles let's look at recovery processes so how many factors go into determining the procedures and the protocols that you are going to have as a training staff but I would bring in a panel of experts I would bring in guys and women who are at the elite minds you know in rehabilitation for sports related injuries see the other thing too about it is grant I used to see so many times doctors who are not quote unquote used to working with athletes have a whole different approach to rehabbing a person than a trainer or a doctor who's around athletes and I would look at what is the US Olympic team do you know what kind of a medical staff today right now there's a student that needs something maybe its books art supplies or a science kit that will unlock their learning potential and you can be the reason they get it with donors choose you'll fund real classroom projects from real teachers so your gift goes exactly where it's needed most because when

hold on this marks on us only 599 and hold senior available for a limited time of participating restaurants tax on included not valid for use within a combo or in combination with any other offer or discount have for a treating all their great athletes who are crossing so many different sports and I would gotten I'd start shopping the market and just bringing some great minds and hear what they have to say and what their thoughts are about how they would work in situations like that let's look ahead to this game against the dolphins I mean everyone assumes the nighters are going to win for obvious reasons are 13 and a half point favorite so even when we're down at the facility the questions aren't really about the dolphins it seems like kind of almost like a by week and we're talking we're asking about how great they are and when they knew they were great and how they feel about being great so what do you think the keys to this game against you know an NFL opponent are I think the bottom line from my perspective is Kyle's got it you stress to the players hey the competition for you is yourself you know what are you doing to

make yourself better forget the opponent be the best that you can be you know how are we going to improve and how are we going to make ourselves better and my concern obviously would be for them to see how many guys have recovered how quickly and how well from the trip from the time changes and all that and this is another thing I would be more conscious this week about substitution and liberally substituting offensively and defensively because I'm not going to leave you on the field for 64 snaps I'm not going to expect the hardest things and often think about this offensive lineman there's not anyone position in the game today which has more snaps for a particular player than in the offensive line you don't sub out your offensive lineman they're out there for the whole 64 65 snaps they're there for short guardings they're there for field goals they're there extra points you got those guys on the field every stamp well and it's hard to substitute in

the offensive line because you're worried about continuity you're worried about communication and but I think the important thing for Kyle what what is it going to be 83 85 degrees down there in Santa Clara this time yeah this time of year it could cook they got Indian summer out there you know that's true I've got to be able to substitute freely and I've got to be able to you know if I'm Kyle I've got to stay with my mindset that I did in the opening game where I'm my first 10 to 12 place I got to get them all to five or six different guys I got a substitute I'll be able to say take them off the field put this guy in have placed a sign they go to different guys keep people fresh keep them well hydrated I love how you always bring it back to Kyle because I feel like 99 percent of football shows always talk about the players but with Kyle you started the show off with this we're ending it with him what was so great about the Niners above all else was how great Kyle was he outcoats Sean McVey on national television in Australia his offense was more creative with

the motion everything was like if you had to if you just dropped in on earth or you were an Australian and you were watching these two teams for the first time you'd come away being like wow that Niners team was so much better and what better coached and Kyle must be better than Sean McVey I wonder if he can bring it like that for the second week in a row this time when it's not on national television and you're going against the dolphins and pretty much you could just roll out your team and win I mean I don't think this game defines the Niners I'm just curious to see how locked in Kyle saying a hint really is do we see the best of him for the second week in a row or is this sort of like a mental letdown week you know the be honest I don't I think he is of the competitive nature where he knows that he set the bar a little higher than maybe most people thought last week against the Rams now the key thing for Kyle is Kyle has to be competing against himself to make sure that he could either match or outdo what he did last time and I don't mean getting cute and exotic and everything but just in terms of his thought process his substitution process his utilization of a variety of

players as weapons early in the ballgame and you know the only faux pas I really thought they kind of bug me that he was reverting back to his old Kyle in the fourth quarter with about seven minutes and 30 seconds ago you're up by 20 points and he calls two consecutive runs to him and we're gaffery yeah between the tackles I'm going like wait a minute you've been a she offensive genius for the first 50 free minutes of the game all of a sudden you're back to be an old Kyle what's that old Kyle in here get him out he's stuck in the back door all of a sudden we like new Kyle Australian Kyle is better he needs to stay with that that new image and the new to be a killing black game yeah he needs to the the key thing if I'm the Niners this I want to get out early strike early strike off and get my points on the board and then I'm going to grind the clock I am going to run it I'm going to keep that clock moving I'm going to ground in pound and

get make sure that clock is just cranked up and going and stay in bounds and run the clock and let's get out of there I want to make it a short game so I want to get into position where I have points on the board and then you know I want to see that clock race I love that all right low smob says grand tavius and tom avius respectfully thank you very much for that low smob Dustin madson says lambardi owns 49er sheets I know I do what that means and then Andrew Scully says mate we miss you in Melbourne when you go to atelate get some Merlot from the winery with your dad do you miss taking the piss I continue to take the piss thank you very much and we got a big game tonight in the afl well it's like 230 in the morning I'm going to be watching that next two days we got afl games and now I'm now a a serious afl analyst so everyone makes sure to watch that tom great stuff today tom thank you very much what's up not to say you mentioned going down to austria next april april yeah I'm bringing my dad I'm

bringing like you get a handle the draft when you're not straya where we back I'll be back I'll be back for the draft don't worry I can I can split my time between cotton it's just fine don't I would never miss the draft I thought maybe you're going to handle the draft while you're in Australia so you're going to bring the draft to austria you know you can stay down there and you're going to have a live show it you know 2 a.m. in the morning not a bad idea and I'm I get another international trip in a couple of months in mexico city which is gonna be a lot of fun I'm sure that I know aren't looking forward to it but I am it's gonna be great you're global you become a global giant now you are a better how should I say banner for the NFL then the NFL is for itself you got more looks more clicks more views down in austria in your week down there than the NFL did I think the NFL kind of fumble like their social media team and the nine or social media teams should have been putting out so much content of players having espresso and eaten by me or whatever I mean it would have been so easy and they didn't so I did it
