The case of the missing Reese's. It was me at the store with my mouth. Motive? Um, their Reese's. What was I going to do? Stop myself? Tune in next time to see if I do it again. Spoiler, I will. Wow, that had everything. Reese's. Suspense. Reese's.
That would do whatever it takes on game day. It matters where you stay. Hilton for the stay. Tonight, Noah Fafita cemented his status atop Arizona's quarterback hierarchy, breaking the all time career passing yards record for the program. Our guy Damon is in Tucson. He'll be joining us shortly. It's the as you all cast post game pod starting right now. Welcome on into a victorious edition of the AZ Wildcat podcast coming to you. Wow. From studio K presented by our friends over at Circle K. I am your host for right now. Kevaux posts. Our guy Damon Farrell AKA Damon Doggle. We joining us shortly live from Casino, Del Sol, stadium, everybody.
How are we doing in the chat? Welcome on in. Drop your reactions to this win down there in the chat below. No, Fafita breaking the career passing yards record once held by the great Nick Foles. And I think the debate we're all going to have today. Chat went Damon gets in here is is that the performance that makes Noah Fafita the greatest quarterback in Arizona history. The conversation is raging on line. I'm excited to get our guy Damon in here very shortly as I get him to do that with me. But chat, drop your members only emojis as well. Let me know that you're reacting to this game with me live. I'm excited. I know that they all had us in the first half. That's a fact. They had us in the first half. I'm not going to lie. That start was. I will say unacceptable the way that Arizona started the game tonight. I think that coming out against NIU with that level of flatness, I think, is a good way
to put it. They came out flat to start this game. I mean, NIU goes and gets a field goal. I think it was on their first possession. Arizona punts on their first possession. And then NIU goes and scores a touchdown. And I think at that point, you start to think to yourself, what does tonight look like for the Arizona wild cats? Right? Like this is NIU. We're coming off of a loss against BYU on the road. This is supposed to be a get right spot where you kind of showcase. Yeah, we face a tough opponent, but we're still Arizona. We're still this offense that can be explosive with the best quarterback in the conference. We're still a defense that can absolutely choke teams out. And you start the way you started against NIU. I was unhappy. I think it is very fair as an Arizona wild cat fan to be very upset at the way they started that game. And I think to venture to call it unacceptable is not dramatic in my opinion. I think that is if you ask the coaching staff an unacceptable way to start the game against
an opponent, that is this quality, right? Like NIU is not at all the level that BYU held. And NIU do an extent in my opinion is and we bring in the one, the only, the dog, Damon Farrell, live from Casino, Del Sol, Stadium, Damon. How are you doing? Do you agree that the first half was just unacceptable and he is taking his trace by the lap, holding out his arms to the crowd? He's there. Boots on the ground. How are you doing? I'm good. How are you doing? I mean, I was talking to the chat about that first half. Obviously, I'm doing good because Nolphita is him, him in my opinion, the goat in our programs, history, Damon. But let's start with that first half. I guess really the first quarter, but definitely the first half. In my opinion, that's an unacceptable way to play a half against a team like NIU. When you have real aspirations this season as an Arizona football program, we talk time
and time again about how after every good year, we have a disappointing year with these certain performances. And I think in that first quarter, you're starting to go down that doom and gloom place of, man, is this another year where we're so close against BYU and we don't get it done and then we come home and then I use whooping our ass. What was your reaction and more importantly, the fans reaction live in the arena to that first half, kind of getting out to a flat, sputtering start? I mean, you could tell it was tense, Kevin. That's for sure. As you said, it felt like a lot of the fan base online collectively kind of tensed up in that moment, thinking back to 2024, playing NAU where it just really has no business being a close game, but maybe you're in for a dog fight, unfortunately. And thank God, Arizona is able to kind of write the script and show that they are the far better football team. But it's a lot of what we saw against NAU in week one this year, which was, yeah, you
win. Yeah, you're the better team. Yeah, you should beat these guys by multiple scores, but was it all that impressive? Were the style points there? I mean, there were some big time highlight plays in this game, but I guess I mean more style points from the way of like, was the scoreboard, you know, 70 to zero when the game was over? No, it wasn't. So I think that this is a pretty disappointing performance overall. I don't want it to take away from what Noah Fafita has been able to accomplish at this university. And I'm sure that me and Kevin will both wax poetically about QB1 in this show and for good reason. But yeah, man, it's hard to feel super encouraged about this football program if they're going to continue to go out there and, you know, kind of play games like that. Yeah, I mean, I don't want to do this like very early in the show, but I guess I'm going to do this very early in the show like I'm sitting here as a fan in Phoenix, who is not boots on the ground and two sound like my guy Damon dog is. And I'm thinking like Brent Brennan's coming into this week saying, this is a red line
game for not only for us, but for you guys too. What kind of fan performance are we going to put out against NIU on a Saturday? And then you guys come out with that performance. And I think it's another situation where it's like, you can't play like that and expect people to support that program the way that BYU fans support their program. Like that performance, I think that everybody from what I was seeing, especially when Trace 5, he caught that touchdown. The crowd was loud. The crowd was high. It was a seems like a good crowd. However, the team, as you put in your show, Tweet, kind of gave us concerns that they might be a little bit disappointing in general in relation to how we felt about them preseason. So yeah, I felt like that first half the way they started the game, like, I keep coming back to it, but it felt unacceptable. Like I'm watching it and I'm having trouble accepting that we're struggling. I think that's a fair word to you struggling against NIU.
We were talking about how man West Virginia is going to give you a real challenge on the road, but you should be able to come out with that one pretty simply. Cincinnati, they might push you, but you should be able to come out with that one. I don't, I don't know. Like I asked the question before you joined in on the chat, Damon, like, are we mid, right? And people were saying, like, I think it was Sean that was saying, you can't really evaluate that until you get into the first couple of weeks of big 12 play. But is it not fair to be a little concerned with the level of this team after a lack lesser performance against NIU, a loss against BYU, where in the second half, you were a complete 180 from where you were in the first half. And then this game against NIU, where yes, no, Fafita's him. He's amazing. We love no Fafita, but as a team, very disappointing overall performance, Damon, where you kind of at with the level of this team and the expectations we should have after three weeks. It honestly sounds crazy to say, Kevin, but I'm having conversations with people at the game.
May or may not be my parents who are here watching the show in this chat, but we're talking about like what's the most impressive performance so far this season? I think it might be the loss to BYU. It has to be. I asked not even a question, which is, which is, it feels weird to say that. You're two in one. You've beaten two teams by a good amount of points. I mean, I'm looking up at the scoreboard right now. You win this one by 25. You won the week one versus NAU by what was that? 30-ish points as well. Those games just didn't really fire you up. Excite the fan base. Isn't a reason that I don't think that more people are going to be in the crowd. In this crowd, going into the next game at home after Arizona gets back from a road trip. It's just it's not the type of stuff that I think is marketing itself to the fan base well. And yeah, it's disappointing that your two home games against lackluster competition
have both been very made results. Whereas the BYU game, I think that I came away from that. Obviously, we were disappointed to lose the game given the fact that we were up at halftime. But I think that both of us, you know, in reflection of that game all throughout the week, we're kind of like, who knows, man, maybe we do have a pretty good football team because BYU is the favorites in this conference for a good reason. And we gave them a hell of a run for their money through a half a football. Just got to figure out how to play a full game. It just feels weird to say that the loss might be the most, you know, rewarding performance of this season so far for Arizona football. And I think that's like, that's why you and I came into this game with such high expectation for the performance that they would put on in this game. And I honestly, I do disagree. I think this is maybe the first time ever. I disagree kind of with Sean's sentiment here in the chat saying, I think we'll show up more mentally for conference play. That's according to how the staff has advertised the team to us, right?
That is not how this team is supposed to operate. Brandon's coming into this season talking about an understanding that you only get at minimum 12 chances to prove who you are as a team. So they're trying to take each week as the super bowl in a way, right? The red line bowl in a way every week coming off a loss against BYU to open conference play by the way. You have a conference loss already. I would I really was expecting this team to show like a level of focus to start this game. And it just wasn't there. I do understand they know they're playing Niu. But yeah, I just I feel like this Arizona team, like despite the fact that we still have yet to get deep into the season, I think they've shown us a reason to be weary of the ceiling this year so far, right? Like if you're not able to eat your vegetables and clean your plate against Niu, they're not just going to feed you soft serve in the big 12.
Like you're going to have to win some difficult games. So I do kind of I'm left like concerned a little bit after a two and one start to the season, which is honestly, I think what a lot of fans would have expected from Arizona to start the year. But the performances have lacked in a way where the record like the record meets up to expectations but the performance doesn't. You know what I mean? Does that make sense? Yeah, absolutely. It's exactly what we experienced in 2024, Kevin. We were there. We we've lived this exact story before. You played New Mexico on night one and you win by scoring 60 points. But what's that? Your defense gives up a 30 bomb to new Mexico. And again, it's Devon Dan Pier, it's Luke Weissong. It's good football players, but it's still New Mexico versus Arizona. And you're letting them score 30 points in the game. You follow that up with an NAU performance that was extremely subpar in my opinion. And then of course, the Kansas State game where you get absolutely drugged in the opening game of the big 12 era.
Yeah, it's it feels a lot like that season thus far. And I do think that it's certainly not the fun way of going about this as as fans Kevin, but I do think that the you know, like the smart way, the way in which we keep ourselves from getting hurt. Like we've gotten hurt in the past with this football team is by kind of just assuming yeah, the ceiling probably isn't as high as maybe we would have hoped. That it was going into this season with all the talk of Rose Bowl, big 12 championship college football playoff. And it feels like we are some distance away from that being reality right now. So yeah, I completely agree with you. I think that you know, the the floor remains higher than it did in 2024. It should still be six, seven, even eight wins potentially. But it feels like the ceiling is definitely not as high as as some of us probably expected it to be. And you know, I don't mean to come off as like overly negative because we like you said, we are going to wax poetic about no if a feed of for I don't know how long on this podcast at some
point and as it relates to his record breaking, but like I know how to put it on Twitter. So I didn't, but I'll put it on the show here. Maybe we can all talk through it. The year is very far from over. Arizona could technically win out and we could be looking back at this conversation that I'm about to have and be like, man, what a fool that Kevin Thomas guy is usually so full of optimism. But where was that when he needed it most? But it feels as though this year three was supposed to be year three at Brent Brennan building on last season and creating as what he called sustainability within the program. Yeah. How many recruits were in attendance tonight? 10s, I think genuinely 10s. If not 110, 210s, you might have had 25 recruits in the building today. You come out flat against Niu. And I see that Brent Brennan is saying on Twitter, he's not on Twitter, but he's saying through quotes that are being posted to Twitter like, hey man, the way we responded to that first quarter
and a half is something to be excited about. And yeah, I think that that's like sure. If you're coaching, you're like, hey man, at least we didn't play four quarters of awful football against Niu. But this day, that in the locker, he was supposed to be the reaction to the second half against BYU. It was supposed to be a response to that entire game and you were supposed to handle these four quarters like soldiers. And I think to come out and put yourself behind the eight ball and have to have a, what was it? A 10 point comeback win against Niu. That doesn't excite me. You know what I mean? Like I get where he's coming from. He's got to coach his team. He's got to keep their heads on straight. He's got to keep them optimistic and focused. But that doesn't excite me. That actually concerns me. No, Kevin, you're 100% right. And I think that there's a simple answer to that conversation. Say it in the locker room. Say it to the team. Say it to the guys. Say it in team meetings all throughout the week.
Say, hey, guys, you know, I'm really proud of the way we responded after the first quarter through the last three quarters. But don't say it to the fans right now, man. We don't want to hear that. Arizona Wildcats fans are not sitting there going, oh, you know what? You know, Bren Brennan's right. You're right. You know, you know, what we did respond well. You're right. Who cares about the first quarter then? It's like clearly there's not enough people in this stadium at these games right now. And I think that communication is the biggest reason why college football coaches have to be great marketers. And frankly, you know, Brennan hasn't done a great job of that to start. And I think it's because of things like that where he kind of puts his foot in his mouth. And he's like, you know, I'm really proud of the guys the way they responded after getting down in this game. You should be telling the fans no way we should have been down in this football game. No chance we should have been down in this football game. And we're going to be talking about that all week long in that locker room. But yeah, it just feels like we we missed the mark a little bit on on some of those
communication things right now in this football program. And yeah, it's you're right. It's not the most encouraging. And I just think that there's a way to to detail exactly what you're saying right there in private behind closed doors without, you know, kind of firing up some people in your fan base. Maybe some of the angrier, more curmudgeoning people in this fan base by by by saying some stuff like that. Yeah, and I do I do agree with a variety of things that are being said in the chat there that Jared is saying the team was banged up from last week. The performance was fine. Like I'm sure that the BYU game did take a lot out of them physically. But I think emotionally it's supposed to fire you up, motivate you to come out and handle a team like N.I.U. Chris Canfield saying it might not be the season of dreams we hoped for, but I'm not going to freak out after a win. And again, I want to stress, I'm not saying it's over. I'm not saying this season is cooked. I am however concerned though that you've struggled against N.I.U. You put up a lackluster performance against N.A.U. And you really, really let yourself down in that BYU game when you were up at the half
and could have upset the the Kings of the conference right now. And I think that's where I'm at where yes, I'm not freaking out like the season is over. But I am concerned because I was told this team was going to build sustainability for the future of the program and we have a ton of recruits in the building. All the cream Lutheran boys were here tonight and that's how you perform. I feel like that is the kind of performance where it's like, no, you were supposed to go out and handle your light work. And now we're talking about how you kind of sputtered out the gates there a little bit. Damon, I do want to continue though on our Arizona Wildcats post game podcast. And maybe talk about some positives. No, Fafita breaking some records and a whole lot more after our first break though on the AZ Wildcats podcast. Your job during this break. It's pretty simple. Leave a like. Stick around. Do not go anywhere. Will he will be right back after this? Yeah, you can bet your Johnny. I was getting Damon in this ad scene for us during
that little filibuster. But I will say, chat. If you are maybe a UFC official not. Oh, if you're an MMA fan, right? You probably made a decent amount of fun tonight with our friends over at Arizona Lottery. And why is that? You're probably running around thinking man. That was a a great, great experience. We've I think we've expressed that the way this team came out in this game left us with some real question marks that you and I are I'm sure going to discuss for the upcoming week ahead of this Washington state matchup. But let's get into some good stuff. Go ahead. I feel like this show might take the shape of this game in a way, Kevin, where we start off out of the gates. You know, we we get down early where we're negative, we're angry. We hate the way that this is trending. Then, you know, we start to figure things out in the middle of the podcast. We start talking about some positives. And then we really round this thing out the way that this one rounded out on the football field tonight, Noah Fafita, all time leading pastor in Arizona program history. He is our king of A Mountain. With a new fancy graphics, shout out to graphics guru Noah Walbrecht for this one, but yeah, Damon, I mean, this performance from Noah Fafita. 325 passing yards, four touchdowns. This accuracy is unbelievable. 31 of 34 passing for our guy Noah Fafita. I said it on Twitter. I will absolutely repeat it here for everybody on the show here. No, Fafita has the most touchdowns in program history. No, Fafita has the most yards in program history. No, Fafita has shown the most loyalty. You could argue of any quarterback in the NIL era across any conference in any level, right? Build the statue. Build a tomorrow.
No. Overnight some copper from wherever they get copper. Build the statue because no Fafita is the greatest quarterback. This university has ever seen you and I were having a conversation recently, Damon with another fellow wildcat that would know a lot more history of this team than maybe you and I, having lived through more of it that said, I don't know if he's like the best. You know what? I mean, I don't know if he's the actual skill for skill best QB accomplishments, Bop Bop all this stuff. I don't know man. Most touchdowns and most yards, the loyalty, like I know it's hard to compare different eras, especially in the NIL transfer era. It feels like this guy is the best Arizona has had and I don't want to say we'll ever have because that means that it wouldn't get any better than we're at now. But you get what I'm saying. It's going to be hard to top a career at a school like Arizona with a talent like no Fafita. He is our King of a mountain now, tonight, tomorrow, as long as he resides in Tucson, no Fafita is
the King of a mountain. Damon, your thoughts on his performance tonight. Yeah, I do think, you know, we could split hairs. We could have the conversation about Nick Foles or maybe somebody that was, you know, even before that, but I think when you really truly lay it all out there, all the accolades, the entire resume, the wins, the loyalty, it's hard to not say no Fafita is the number one guy. If we're talking quarterbacks in this program's history and you know, it's honestly, it's truthfully like an honor to watch this guy play for U of A. I definitely this season for me. I've said it before, like was about cherishing no Fafita while we still had him at this university, regardless of whether or not the season win total ends up looking as, you know, high as what we want that to look like. Like I think that at the end of the day, you know, we're here to enjoy Noah and tonight was was one of those very memorable moments. Similar to Cincinnati last year where he
gets that touchdown record with the Thordagio Richardson. He gets the, he gets the passing yards record tonight with a Throedocris Hunter who had a much, much better game as well today. I may add, but yeah, it was a remarkable performance from Fafita. He also showed some wheels off Kevin, just kind of showing who he is as a guy. He's got the passing record on the horizon, but he sees that, he sees that field open up like the Red Sea and, and, and you know, you know, he's got to scoot it in for a 30 yard touchdown score. Got to love Noah Fafita and I do agree with you from the standpoint of in today's day and age with the team hopping that players do, it would, it's going to be really hard for Arizona to find a quarterback that's as good as Noah Fafita that will stick it out at Arizona for the requisite amount of seasons to become the best quarterback of all time. And so for that reason, Noah Fafita might have a little bit of a stronghold on being the best pubi in Arizona program history. But as you said, hopefully that's not the case. Hopefully someone comes through
and bests him. I think Noah would be the first guy who would just tell you straight up. I hope someone is better than me right after me. You know, I want to see this program succeed, but at the end of the day, you know, if this is a guy that is deserves to be kind of revered on this campus. Yeah, we know it's not going to be Sawyer Anderson, but I will say this much though. No, Fafita, I feel like he's trying to ignore it. Sawyer, this is trying to ignore it. But like, no, Fafita man, like you said, I think our guy Kobe on Twitter kind of, you know, echoed a similar sentiment of like, you know, I don't know if you're religious. I know Damon. I know Damon's backstory, but I don't know if the chat's religious. I don't know if you have, you know, something you look to or if you don't, that's great too. We are lucky. Whether you feel blessed, fortunate, lucky, it happens, stands, fate, you know, crossing stars. We're lucky to have seen Noah Fafita, the team act in Tucson. We're lucky to have seen Noah Fafita break the touchdown record for the Arizona wild cats. We're lucky to
see no Fafita break the Nick Foles yardage record in Tucson, right? You and I were having a big discussion about, I say big discussion. I mean, so our little old podcast, but we were having a discussion about, do we want to see him break it in Washington in Washington state? I should say, or do we want to break what, you know, watch him break it at home in Tucson? And I think having seen it in Tucson, I think it's awesome that he broken into son. Nick Foles sends a message, you know, I'm, you know, prerecorded, sends a message. No, Fafita, like during the game, you know, his dad got interviewed by TNT from the stands. Like it was a beautiful moment. They also were able to play a ton of like vignettes and features about no Fafita during before or after the game. We talk about, you know, all right, we talk about no Fafita for Heisman, right? And we, you know, the preseason debate of should Arizona have been pushing for this? Is this just sports illustrated, calil, T2.0 blah, blah, blah, blah? Like this is the reason why you do that kind of stuff.
So that TNT, when they have a guy like no Fafita, who's going to break a program record at a school like Arizona, they give a damn. They want to shine him up. They want to showcase him. They want to interview his dad. They want to play vignettes and talk about his family and his loyalty to Tucson. Like this guy matters, not not just for Arizona football, not just for Tucson, for college football. Like this is, I think we've said it again, we're going to say it more times. In my opinion, the last bastion of loyalty in college football plays in Tucson. And where's the number one? And his name is Noah Fafita. The guy has passed up millions of dollars, life altering money for a guy that's already made life altering money to stay in Tucson. And that guy deserves a statue. That guy deserves your, you know, your applaud. It's your appreciation, your gratitude for what he sacrificed for what he's done for the football program. It really is special stuff. And we do hope
that we see more great quarterbacks in Arizona's future, but there will never be another one, just like number one, there will never be a number one, just like no Fafita. He is truly one of one. And you know, Damon, like we're talking about the sappy stuff, the, the, how great of a guy he is and how special he is. This accuracy man, it feels like every week he has like 28 for 31 or 23 of 29. And it's like, dude, you don't see that. Like this is not me and Damon just shining up an average quarterback because he held, he holds a record for a program that we appreciate. Like this is a real A1 talent quarterback that just so happens to be Arizona's guy, right? Like it's, it's wonderful. And I'm glad he got to break the record into Saundayman. Yeah, definitely very cool for him. It sounds like from Brent Brennan and his post game presser that he did Kevin that getting no Fafita and
allowing him to break the record right here in Casino Del Sol Stadium in front of this home crowd was something that they had earmarked and something that they were definitely considering rolling out there. I guess I have a question for you, Kevin, because by the time that Fafita broke that record, okay? This, these stands had cleared out. Yeah. Like I'm talking to one of my buddies up there who's, you know, my buddy Harrison, who you see on Twitter for a good time. Great Twitter follow. Great. Yeah. Yeah. Met up with him in the concourse tonight talking to him. And he's about to take off. There's like, you know, five minutes left. And he says to me, man, I just wish that they, you know, really kind of pushed it and let Noah break the record tonight. All right. Well, I'll see you later, man. Have a good one. And he leaves. And then Noah does it like when he's not even out there anymore. And, and, you know, half the, half the crowd had left at that point. You're bound to get some of the students to leave. They're looking to go party.
They're looking to go have a good time. But there are fans that came to this game that were like, checked out, okay, well, we won, you know, nothing really to stay for. And they did, it's either they didn't know about Noah Fafita. They don't care about it, which is even more baffling to me. And, you know, would, would make, make me want to fist fight some Arizona fans right outside the stadium. But, you know, like it's what, what, yeah, whatever it is, if you can't fight for Noah Fafita, you can't fight for anything. But at the end of the, at the end of the day, it's like, you know, I, I, I'm happy you got to do it in front of the fans. I wish you got to do it in front of a little bit more appreciative crowd, a crowd of people that were ready for it, waiting for it, expecting it. And yeah, obviously that wouldn't, you know, you wouldn't get any really Arizona fans next week. Probably about, you know, 2000 in Pullman that would get to see it. So it's much greater of numbers than that. But at the end of the day, you know, it wasn't as if it was like, it was, it was, you got a good pop when Nick Fools came on and, you know, congratulated Noah. All the people in the
building were, were elated to see Nick Fools for that moment. But a lot of people had left the building at that point. And so yeah, a little bit disappointing on my end. Was there like a countdown on the jumbo tron at any point of like, oh, he's 60 yards away. Now, oh, he's got a completion. Now he's 44 yards away. That's a my, not to my knowledge. And yeah, it feels like if, if that, but if I'm saying like, if that was the goal, if this was the goal, yeah, to, you know, to do it today in front of the home crowd, which clearly it was because when the game is already out of hand, no feta is coming back out onto the football field to get his record, then why are we not promoting it like that? I don't know. That doesn't make any sense to me. It's like, if, if you want to play it that way, I'm cool with that. You know, obviously there's the risk that something horrible happens. But if you're willing to take that risk, then promote it better, market it better. I don't understand. You're right. There should have been like a takeer on the bottom corner of this scoreboard that I'm looking at right now. You know, there should have been maybe a half-time
thing put on the screen of no if a feta is this many yards away from breaking the all-time passing, you know, yards record at Arizona football. I don't know. It just feels like that's the kind of stuff where we continue to miss the boat with this program. And it's why you don't get these stands filled up. It's the type of thing that Jed fish did so well as much as we don't want to press Jed fish. Like that was Jed fish ball was communicating. I'm selling cars. I'm selling cars. Selling just the the greasiest, sloppyest car you've ever seen in your life. And and Ellen people, you're going to want to give us 45k for that bad boy. And and and people listen, that makes it sound like we're, you know, the football program is a scam. I know you mean. Yeah. But no, I think like to your point though, like, you know, like again, we're not trying to like destroy the events marketing team. That's a crazy job, right? But like a lot of it's on Brendan too, though, you know, like it's on the head man at the end of the day. Fish cared about that stuff.
And that's why he put so much effort into it. I knew the guy who was running the the creative department. Fish had weekly meetings with him, which is unheard of with a creative department. Like a guy makes graphics because he wanted to be hands on every single thing that went out to went out to the fan base because he knew how important getting this fan base locked in was into son. And we've lost a lot of that man. And it just, it feels like this, this community is scorned a little bit by him. And that probably has a big part to do with it. They did get sold by the use car salesman. And now they're sitting there like, man, this is BS. I'm not going to let this happen to me again. But we just got to find better ways to market this kind of stuff better because you're absolutely right, Kevin. There's no excuse why this shouldn't have been like the talk of the town around the whole stadium. And it felt like a lot of people didn't even have any clue it was coming. I'm going to I'm going to Saturday night quarterback the marketing team from what they should do tonight. Tonight was also Hispanic Heritage night. You know what you do?
You find whatever artist is most popping in that Tucson community. Or you find some sort of artist that can come to a concert after the show or you have fireworks or use the drones or whatever the hell the upgrades were to the stadium afterwards a firework show, a light show, a something to try to get people to stay longer into the game. And then while they're there, you're playing all the no if a fee to hits. I mean, half time we're doing I'm doing career highlights at half time. We're doing a after half time we're doing a ticker on the screen every time Arizona is either having the ball or not having the ball. I don't know if there's rules with showing stats, two players while they're playing or what the rules are there. If you have to abide by those rules abide by them. But like the ticker should have happened. Like I think there's no reason why Damon should be able to be on the field right now. I think people should still be there celebrating the off of Fita. So yeah, I think like something you could have done to make it feel more like
more than just a game against N.I.U. Right. And like that's where it's like to your point Damon. Some of it does fall on Brennan because Brennan's also doing the opposite. He's telling you show up Saturday. We need everybody loud and proud. It's a red line game for us and for you. And then when he's asked about no if it is record, it's kind of non-committal. It's, well, we don't want to push it if he gets it cool, but the win is more important. And as you and I talked about off air like brother, you're playing N.I.U. You know, we know you're doing the coach speak stuff, but you can kind of keep it real. You can kind of say like, hey man, that would be a big moment to get no if a Fita a record like that in Tucson. Of course, we want the win most and first and foremost, we're not going to just run no if a Fita out there to get a record. We're going to go get a win. Damn it. But we're also going to maybe get him that opportunity to have that moment in front of his fan base. Damn it. And that's kind of like why I feel like the messaging, the marketing, like it just didn't match the moment that was no if a Fita having
this opportunity. And in their defense, in everybody's defense, in graphics guru Noah's defense, no if a Fita had only done this, right, throwing for this many yards, I think, but six times in his career entering tonight. So it's not like this was a game where it's like we expect no if a Fita to throw for damn near 350. That's just not how Arizona usually plays. But then why are you running them out there when it's decided? You know what I mean? Like I don't know. It feels like if you're going to go get him in the record, let us know so we can show up and stay. But if you're not, like we can just treat it like a regular week. But either way, more so happy than anything that he got the record. But yeah, it's weird they didn't have like a ticker or anything or like a shirt or a towel or something. Like come on man. It just it feels like, you know, to your point, Kevin, like there is a way to market to people. Obviously, whatever happens in the game is going to dictate how we call the plays. But we would love for no if a Fita to break this record in front of this
home crowd this week. Just let your intentions be known. Tell the people tell the people we are looking to get no if a Fita over 320 passing yards in this game. And you know, just kind of fire fire them up a little bit more. So get it on their radar more. So because I think that that absolutely is an option that is on the table while still doing the coach speak. Obviously the win is what's most important and whatever, you know, the game dictates that, you know, how we play call, that's how we'll play call. But at the end of the day, it would be special for Noah to accomplish that feat in front of this fan base in front of this Tucson community. Now, I don't feel like it's that difficult about this game. What one more time? I just said doesn't feel like it's that difficult. No, it doesn't. And I think there's like, I don't know, Brett Brennan is a a head coach for a program that isn't like an SEC school or Texas tech or even BYU, don't extend. He is a guy that has to wear a lot of hats. He is probably spread quite thin. But I do think that like if you're going to tell
us it's football and winning over the records, then don't then throw some of your Anderson out there. You know what I mean? But I will say again, I referenced it earlier, but like maybe everyone kind of knows we have one quarterback and the other ones, one of them is in the weight room getting ready, Oscar Rios getting ready in the weight room. The other one is our backup quarterback. So you're Anderson. So Damon, I do want to talk to you about the targets though and a whole lot more from this game after our second break on the AZ Wildcats podcast. Leave a like, stick around and do not go anywhere. We'll be right back. It is our good friends, our family over at the husband and wife law team. If you've been involved in a serious accident, the result is in serious injury. But I have a solution for you. The husband and wife law team who employ the specialist to get the job done Damon Dog. I mean, I'm talking hundreds of years of combined trial experience at the husband and wife law team. Yes, that's right. They actually go to trial if it dictates that they need to go to trial. Now, obviously there are a lot of things. There's social media superstars. There are law team. There are the husband and wife duo that we all love so much, but they're not. They can't tell into the future. You know, they're not that so raven. But what they can do is guarantee some things that they're clients such as the fact that you can cancel your fee agreement at any time for any reason. the best quarterbacks in the country, but how are his targets in this game without Giovanni Richardson Damon? You were live in attendance for Arizona vs. N.I.U. What were some of your takeaways from Arizona's past catchers in this one? Call Schroder referencing Cole Rusks injury, which hopefully is not a long term one because he was showing some promise as well before he went out with injury. What did you see from the past catchers? Yeah, I thought it was a strong game from their standpoint Kevin. Certainly an upgrade from the past catchers from what we've seen the first couple of weeks, which have been fairly disappointing. I thought that, you know, they showed up. They did their jobs tonight probably outside of the whole Fafita festivities and, you know, him and his performance and him breaking the record. I think that I am most pleased with what the past catchers were able to do tonight on this football team and a large part of that is trace by V who comes down with just an absolute highlight real catch sports center. Dunna,
Dunna, type of catch Kevin, unbelievable. Every angle somehow is just even cooler when you get to see that new angle dropped. Oh my God, it's a cooler catch than I even thought it was in the first place. Chris Hunter had a better game than, you know, he has had at this point this season. I like what I see out of brain and felt still. Fafita had brain and felt so one of those foreign completions right here in this end zone and this corner of this end zone, you can see it right there where would have been an unbelievable play, but brain and felt was wide open. And I don't think that's a coincidence. I think brain and felt continues to deserve more and more playing time as well. And then I know that it wasn't a catch Kevin, but he is a past catcher and it was truly, truly special Caleb Jett Smith with his first touchdown of the season. Punt return touchdown. That kid can straight up fly. I can see why they call him Jett because he is moving at a different speed than everybody else out there. The past catchers tonight, they did their job. I wanted to see
a big time upgrade and performance from what we've seen the first couple of games. I thought we saw that and that doesn't even talk about the tight ends. Tyler Powell catches his first touchdown and Cole Rusk continues to look pretty good. Yeah, I mean, trace by me that catch. Unbelievable. And I think that was like, that's the reason why you and I have been challenging trace by me for two weeks now. Right? Like all off. Exactly. I'm banging the trace by me drum of like, Hey, point to the sign. You see this dude who had like five touchdowns on like 10 targets last year at one point. You see this guy? This upcoming year, we're going to give him the ball more. What's going to happen? Is he going to become the greatest receiver that ever lived? Answer not yet. Right? And I think after the first week and a half or so, like especially after G. Avani Richardson goes out against BYU, you're kind of thinking where's Spivey? Right? And then now
against N.I.U. obviously G. Avani Richardson out. Obviously, N.I.U. not the team. The BYU is, but it is great to see. I feel like trace by me had a complete game today. For the first time this year, you had a complete game and look what happened. Six targets, six catches, 90 yards, a touchdown, an average of 15, yack of 30, and a long of 43. That's a game breaker, which is exactly what we know, what which we know is exactly what trace by me can be. Is a game breaker. And I think like, if you are able to, and this might be one of the most important things to come out of this G. Avani Richardson lists stretch for Arizona as a result of the past catchers, if you're able to build trace by these confidence up to a point where he can do this stuff against maybe some big 12 opponents, it would be huge. And I think that catch that catch right there is the type of stuff that I don't know where his confidence was at. I don't know if it was low. I don't know if it was high.
I don't know if it was mid, but that's the kind of catch as Adam Luffco said on the halftime show or the post game show or whatever the hell it was. That's the catch when you put it on tape. Coaches see it, scouts see it, fans in New Hampshire see it. It's an unbelievable catch. And I do feel like it's an indication that trace by V is kind of woken up. I'll say a little bit this season. Damon, how do you feel about specifically trace by V and can he build on this going forward? Yeah, great stuff out of trace by V today. And I think that you're 100% right when you say that those type of plays, those type of game breaking plays are why we have such such high expectations for a guy like trace by V because the talent is so clearly there. We're talking about a guy that is an NFL player in the making a superstar level talent when we're talking about the college football side of things. And you know, it hasn't been able to fully put it together yet for whatever reason, right? Like I have been kind of critical of tray over
the first couple games of this season in large part because you know, I'm starting to now blame him for why he's not being trusted by the coaching staff. I have been more on the side of what are we doing? Get trace by V out there. He's clearly one of our best pass catchers. And then it starts to just almost become so obvious that you're like clearly he's doing something wrong where he's not getting, you know, the bulk share of the playing time because he's more talented than the guys that he's competing with for that playing time. I want to I want to talk about one play in particular, Kevin. And it's not the highlight grab. It's not the 43 yard catch either. It's not even a play where he garnered any sort of statistic. But I think it's the exact type of play that will get trace by beyond the football field even more to make those type of game changing type of plays at receiver that we know he can. It's Noah Fafita's run into the end zone where if you go back and watch that play and if you have if you can bring up another tab right now while we're watching, don't leave the show. But if you can bring up another tab while we're watching and you want to
you know, kind of see this side by side. Noah is scanning where he's going to run and he sees that if he turns left and tray hits a block, it's it's six. It's a touchdown and trace by the who is you concerned with running his own route concerned with breaking off of that and per, you know, trying to provide an outlet for Fafita to throw the ball to if the play breaks down realizes Fafita's about to scamper and instead of calling it a play, dusting his hands and saying cool. I'll see if I can maybe get a touchdown or make a catch on the next play. He goes full scale balls to the wall starts blocking the one guy who has any shot of tackling Noah Fafita gets a good enough block off where Fafita is through to the end zone. And I think it's those little things man where I think the coaching staff wants to see that stuff out of trace by the before they fully, fully trust him with playing like 80 to 100% of the snaps. And so I was excited to see that type of stuff because it feels like maybe just doing some inferring from my end Kevin that, you know,
like the things that they are displeased with trace 5 you about are that kind of stuff. The, you know, not not doing the full scale team effort things that need to be done on a football field to finish plays or running the proper routes even when the ball's not necessarily going to come your way. But your route is going to impact whether or not it can come to the guy who is the intended target because you're running DB's off of his space. So it's things like that. And I think trace 5y maybe is is is getting it a little bit more game by game. Trace 5y hopefully can build on this looking up into big 12 player. I guess the remainder of big 12 places were on one on the big 12. But Damon, I do want to hit our by the numbers. I want to talk about our love to play the game because I have a feeling trace 5y's name is going to come back up again in that segment. And I want to break down the rest of this game. Here we have, wow, six super chats to get to Coolbro with a handful. Where do I start? Which one makes the most sequential sense? Damon, how you feel about Pavan walking the Yankees? We are all Pavan's dogs. Bark bark. Not gonna lie. I was booing when Pavan was put to pinch hit. And according to you, a, or according to scarves, you of a was in London too.
Honestly, that's a pretty cheeky super chat right there at a Coolbro cheeky, in it. But, uh, Damon, he thoughts on Pavan Smith and his insane absolute nuke bomb that he unleashed. First off, shout out to you, Coolbro. Thank you for your super chats. My guy has always. But yeah, I don't, you know, this is not the pH and X dback post game show Kevin, but I'll keep it short and sweet. Pavan Smith, unbelievable, genuinely the most unbelievable athlete I think I've ever encountered in my life. If this was a situation, Kevin, where the debocks were within one game, two games, a half game of the wildcard, there is a 0% chance Pavan Smith is putting that ball over the fence. But because Pavan Smith has dragged us down this entire season, hitting under 200 at the first base position and has ruined us for the better part of months on end. And then the playoff odds
go down to just 2%. That's when he's going to show up. That's when Pavan Smith has what he has been waiting all season on, Kevin. It's unbelievable. People want to be hyped. They want to be excited. Cool. We're not dead yet. We walked off the Yankees. That's great guys. And guess what? You can clip this and I'll post it and I'll call myself an idiot if the debocks make the playoffs because of that then fair play Pavan Smith. You're the goat. I love you brother, but that is not going to be the case. The debacks are essentially already eliminated. And that's the only reason, the only reason Pavan Smith hit a home run, hit a walkoff home run tonight. Unbelievable. Also unbelievable is the support of one AZ catch G you with $7 in total super chats again. Shout out. And let me guess it's about Pavan. Let me guess. It's about Pavan. Honestly, you and you and AZ catch G aligned with your third eyes here because you said it's on the very similar earlier. This show is going to kind of be like the deback start off. Slow,
a little negative kind of picks up and then Pavan Smith hits a walkoff home run. And then he also says that I think I think this is Noah. As AZ catch G says, he should have just gotten the record in the first half. And yeah, I mean, that would have been a hell of a first half AZ catch G. But yes, thank you to everybody for your super chats and trace Bavvy, Damon. I will say, all right, we got an update. Da da da da da da. He is indeed in sports center. Top 10 here, Damon. What number is trace Bavvy? I feel like I feel like maybe, you know, I had something to do with that. Maybe just as much, if not more than tray himself, making the catch by adding sports center from my Twitter account, Kevin, because you were the only one that I saw doing that. You could definitely chalk that one up to a Damon dog trace Bavvy brain trust that got that on sports center as he top 10 tonight. For sure, for sure. I mean, this
podcast, we know we have motion, but if we have that kind of motion, we got to put it to different use respectfully to trace Bavvy. We got to put it to different use. Can we get Tommy Lodin show at saw underscore Bookman? That's a great point. That's a great point. Also 30 second. Hey, you're listening to the AZ Wildcats podcast. Also those score Bookman, those super chats, Kevin, were so like exemplary of exactly what happened in the press box tonight. I'm sitting up there. And my guy, Ryan Kelley, who used to work for AZ Desert Swarm, used to be the editor at AZ Desert Swarm before Brian Peterson took it over. He's up there, Kevin. And he looks over at me and he goes, Damon, did you just see what happened? And I go, no, no, no, what happened? We won. We walked it off. And he goes, Haven Smith walked it off, brother. And that was like, I'm having multiple conversations up there in the press box about Haven Smith. That's the type of
emotion that that guy has or I guess that maybe that I have in terms of my hatred for him. Because I just, yeah, it's unbelievable. I truly had a loss for words almost when it comes to Pave and Smith. I cannot believe he hit that home run in that moment. And yet it's the most Pave and Smith thing that possibly could have happened. And you're tuned in to the pH next debax post game pod. My name is Derek Montia. And I used to be a real impression, but I fell so flat on my face that it's ridiculous. Because I was going to do his intro. And then I was like, well, that's cooked. I already did multiple lives today. We're not doing a live. And then I was like, I could do the male bag intro where every day is Mother's Day, every Mother's Black History Month, every week is shark week. I could do that. But that would be lame. But Damon, we're getting off track. We're talking Derek Montia. We're talking Megaran. We're talking Pave and Smith. What is going on? Can we get to our Arizona lottery? Love the play of the game with our friends over at Arizona lottery. Love the play.
I got to say something, Damon. I think I know what my play of the game is. I got to be honest. I think I have a pick. And I'm going to be bold. And I'm going to have guts. And I'm going to go out on a limb. And I'm going to say the play of the game tonight, chat was trace fiveies, one handed catch in the corner of the end zone. It was unbelievable. Like, I said it on Twitter and like hashtag the spot where it happened. But I said it on Twitter like that that's one of the best catches I've ever seen. Or maybe I said it's the best catch I've ever seen. Maybe a little bit of like bait there. But like it is certainly if not the greatest one of the best catches I've ever seen. I don't think it's better than OBJs for me, right, against an NFL team with with a guy literally committing PI on you. You're not in the end zone yet. You still have to get there when you catch it. Like he's he's way back there. Oh, Del was people forget,
people forget, man. Oh, Del dude, he could have he could have touched the ground when he caught the ball. Like he was really far back there. And that's how I feel about trace five, you know, Del's catch man, like that catch was one of the best catches I've ever seen. Is it the best? No, but does that matter also know tonight it was the best. It's my love to play the game. I love it, Kevin. I love that breakdown. Yeah, trace 5e, unbelievable catch. Definitely the easy answer. And, you know, I don't want to make it seem like you're taking the easy way out on us, but that's fine. Someone had to go ahead, bro, I'll go ahead in a different direction. Someone did have to do it because I probably would have taken this play anyways, Kevin. And, you know, very, very nothing
burger play in a vacuum, but it's more about what it represents. I'm taking Noah Fefita's past that, you know, makes him the all-time leading pastor in Arizona football history to Chris Hunter because of what that means for legacy, what that means for this program and for Noah Fefita and his family. And, you know, just very, very deserving folks all the way around. We've been honored with getting to watch Fefita play for this football program for as long as he has. And, uh, and yeah, that was a big time culmination of, you know, a lot of that positivity and, and, you know, good times that we've had right there in that moment. So, yeah, special stuff. Again, this was time for Love the Play of the Game. And we appreciate our friends over at Arizona Lottery. Love the play over there with our friends at Arizona Lottery. Now, Damon, anything, any direction you want to take this post game show in before we get out of here, I just have like maybe a couple more thoughts on this game as it
pertains to Arizona's performance. I will say I probably should eat a little bit of crow about what I had to say about Teddy Bridgewater's nephew. I apologize, TB's nephew. You, you, you might have watched the pregame show. Maybe that's why you got 17 on the board tonight. I don't know. I don't want to say, it's not for good performance. I don't want to take credit for a bad performance, but I did have some shots fired on our pregame show. And I said, Teddy Bridgewater's not walking through that door. And I think as close to Teddy Bridgewater's and I you could get they did get tonight from Dickens. So, yeah. I wonder what that would look like. If Teddy Bridgewater suited up for Northern Illinois tonight, is that enough to get the job done versus a vastly superior football team? I know that we always do the like, oh, could the worst NFL team lose to the best college team? Absolutely not. Never a chance in hell that that could happen. But if Teddy Bridgewater was on this football field tonight, what does the score look like? Do they win? I think they get, I think they get
two more touchdowns. I think Arizona ultimately wins. But I do think that he changed like I know no feet of broker record. And I know we won the game. But like, there are points tonight. And you can, you can agree or disagree because you were there. You know what I mean? But there were points tonight where it felt like damn anything they want to do is either like arduous, but it works or it just straight up cuts right through us. Like I felt like they were moving the ball very easily against his Arizona defense for stretches of the game. Now obviously they didn't win the game. They didn't put up more than 20 points. It wasn't like Danny Gonzalez defense was getting cooked out there by any means. But they were able to shut out NAU. You let 17 up against NAU. So I do feel like Teddy Bridgewater might have made this look a lot closer. And who knows? Like you started this game down 10, nothing. Yeah. And then they missed a kick that could have made it. I'll tell you what. Work 13. Yeah. Oh, yeah. If if if Teddy Bridgewater is out there with a 10 oh lead,
I think he wins this football game. Yeah. Well, this is important. Prime Teddy or like high school coach in football Teddy. Cause I'd rather have the quarterback they had tonight out there. If I'm in an IU, then maybe current Teddy Bridgewater. Yeah. And as Kodiak Broncos says, and I know that he has unfortunately been subject to having to watch Teddy Bridgewater play for his football team. As have I, my brother, as he was brought into BD to a tongue of ILO back up. And I believe he played like 17 snaps because every time he would get in the game, he would get injured as well in classic Teddy Bridgewater fashion, but just nauseating football. Just three yards in a in a checkdown. Teddy Bridgewater. But I don't know. Just against there was on his defense tonight a little bit. Might have worked tonight. That that was what I was going to bring up. That's a good segue, Kevin. I was just going to say I didn't think that this defense played very good tonight. I thought this defense like we've talked a lot about the offense and for good reason, Fafita, Trace Bivy,
the past catchers. It's awesome. Yay. But this defense is being 17, 17 points, not good enough, not good enough. And it should have been more, should have been 20, you know, it could have been even more than that. And I just think that that's that's beneath us as a program, giving up that many points, giving up that many scoring opportunities to a team like NIU. There's another drive Kevin that I tweet about where NIU that we stuff them on fourth down Cooper Blomstrom gets a sack. They ran 15 plays. 15 plays. We couldn't get them off the football field. 15. It's Northern Illinois, my man. Like I this defense, I thought they played pretty good versus BYU. They got gassed against a really physical team. It's kind of how we lost to BYU last year. You know, it wasn't exactly the most shocking thing in the world. NAU, you know, they I didn't think they played great, but they didn't give up a single point. So it's hard to be too upset with them. But I thought tonight, they showed that they are drastically worse than last season's defense drastically. Because last
season's defense, NAU's not getting any of that. None of that. And so, you know, I think that this was a real kind of awakening for me from the standpoint of we just don't have the same horses that we had on D last year. And I trust Aidan Zalas to figure some things out and help develop these guys. But, you know, I think the blitz packages, they don't work as well when you don't have Genesis Smith, Trayden Stukes, in Dalton Johnson on an island with wide receivers. Because those guys are NFL football players that can guard wide receivers on an island. But when you're doing it with guys that are not as good as those NFL players, now you're allowing yourself to be kind of carved up a little bit. And yeah, I thought that this defense is I'm noticing a very noticeable step back from last season right now. The sack totals tonight, four to two. If I told you, and I you had four in Arizona had two, I feel like pregame you're thinking what went wrong
with the NAU's defense. Like we talked about, you know, coming into this game about how you want to see Arizona force some turnovers in this one. We want to see Arizona be that dominant, violent, gutting human flesh, kind of defense that Danny Gonzalez loves to run. But they just haven't been as disruptive this season as they were last season. Forget like talent level. I guess not forget talent level, but forget like like a claim, right? I think last year we remember the defense so well because of the way the season in totality went, right? But I think like week by week, this defense is just not as disruptive as last year's defense. And I think that you can be disruptive and still take a step back in the secondary. You know what I mean? So I don't even, that's when I say like remove talent from the equation. That's what I mean. Like you can take a step back in the secondary and still be disruptive in the front seven, getting after the quarterback, causing havoc in the running game, blowing up, you know, little little draw plays and things like that. Making sure that, you know, I don't know, they don't almost fluke a guy staying up at the
43 and then going on a dead ball to the end zone. Like there are certain things that you can still do to be disruptive. And so I feel like, yes, Arizona's defense is not the same level of, of, you know, stucs Johnson Smith, you Smith, you know, all brown, all these dudes that were on last year's defense. Some of them are still on this year's defense, but a lot of them aren't even with those guys. Not there. I think you can take a step back in secondary. You can take a step back here or there, but you still have to be disruptive and find ways to impact the game. There are teams way less talented than Arizona that have forced a lot more turnovers this season. You know what I mean? And so I do think that this defense, I think they might get there because Danny Gonzalez has shown that he can coach a team over the course of a season to like be what they want need to be. But starting out over three games, like it's been an underwhelming defensive performance. Production from a statistical output. Like I don't want to poop who the NAU performance because zero
points is zero points, no matter how you cut it. You know what I mean? I didn't look great. Yeah, but you know what I mean? Like I'm not going to sit here and focus on that one. Like yeah, zero points is zero points. That's a solid performance. BYU in that one, we can maybe chalk it up to be an improbo and offense not helping you out. And you're going up against LJ Martin Bearbock. My right. Get it tonight. I sat on the pregame show like I didn't want six points for NAU tonight. You know what I mean? Like I didn't want them to get in fuel goal range multiple times in this one and get deep into the red zone and whatnot. It was way different than that. And so yeah, I do think like right now the defense, they could use a lot more disruptive disruption on that side of the ball. Damon to go back to the offensive side real quick though. And I think this is my last note on this game as it relates to the units and the way they performed the O line. Okay, go, go, go, go, go. Yeah, I just wanted to say that I think that you made a good point in that we didn't necessarily expect our defense to be a lead last season. And that somewhat snowballed into effect
as they got better and better and better and better game by game. So I do think that's a good point out of you that this it's not the end all be all this is not the final version of this defense that we're looking at right now. But that being said, it's been you know certainly when you have these expectations after the elite defense you had last season and expectations are a good thing. It's pressure, but it's because your fans are expecting things out of you because you you were good in the past. You were previously good. And so they expect that to continue. And yeah, I feel like they have fallen short of those expectations just three weeks into the season. But I do agree with you from the standpoint of it's it's we were not expecting our defense to be a lead last year. That happened over the course of an entire season. So let's not be quick to judge just through three games. This is not the end all be all this is not the final evolution. But yeah, it's been it's been a disappointing start. But now let's let's go to the offense. I just wanted to piggyback on your point real quick. Yeah, I mean like the offensive line I brought
up the the sax number as a relation to like Arizona not being disruptive. And I you was way too disruptive tonight for sacks against Arizona's offensive line. I think most of which came early. I think almost all of which came early in this game to be honest with you. So you could argue they got better over the course of the game. But it's like it's and I you my brother. I don't I don't know what it is. You know what I mean, whether it's Rhino top auto time making mistakes or Matthew Lotto, causing this team with penalties. It's that left side. It's just I'd like I'd and I don't think like I don't think Josh Ogles B is like obviously he is the one that's going to show their blame here. He's the position coach for that group. But I don't think it's like, oh, he can't coach this group. Like he can't figure it out. I don't know why because we've seen them first some stretches. Maybe not this season yet because you only played three weeks. But we've seen this group as last season kind of put together strain together some some decent performances despite the mistakes. And I think you and I have multiple conversations early on last season and late on
last season about like, man, remember where this group was early on in the year? We could not stand to watch this offensive line continuously cost us with penalties and Rhino holdings and whatever. A legal hands of the face, whatever. And then at the end of the year, it felt like that was one of your strongest groups in my opinion, right? This year, I kind of expected them to build on the end of last year, especially when you bring in Henning and you have some continuity on that side of things is not like the secondary on the defensive side. The offensive line is one that is highly has a lot of high continuity on it. And their performances have not been there. What are you looking at with the offensive line? I know you kind of pointed out there. It's that left side and I totally agree. But what are you seeing with the whole line? Yeah, it's, you know, it feels like it's it's Rhino and it's Matthew Lotto who continue to be the guys who make the majority of the mistakes when it comes to online play for this team. But Kevin, I actually think that it's beyond the sacks. It's the running game. That's much more what is concerning for me. But what was the final rushing statistics tonight for the team?
The final rushing statistics were 84 yards net for Arizona 86 yards net for N I U 26. You got out Rosh. You got out rushed by N I U and how many yards did know if a fee to have? Because you had 30 on one play. No, if a fee to rushing yards tonight, six attempts, four yards along of 30. I'm assuming it's sacks. So sacks get factored in. Yeah, sacks get factored in. But yeah, I mean, that's I guess that's less than I would have thought. I would have thought 23 from Craig 12 from Anderson of Sawyer, nine from Modi, five from Antoine Roberts. And then you had the Fafita run that canceled out. Not good enough. Not good enough. Getting out ran by N I U and your own stadium. I mean, those were the things that we talked about versus NAU because we knew that we were going to play the full card versus NAU in the first game. And so what did me and you talk about Kevin? We want to see the run game look effective because
that was lackluster last season. And we want to see the defense like pitch a shutout essentially. And we got the pitch a shutout part. But the run game has just frankly not been there at all through three weeks. It looks worse than last year's run game. It looks like it's taking a step back from what we witnessed last season. And that's concerning because last season's run game was below average for this conference. And I think that the goal was you bring back you bring back recent O you bring back Craig you even bring back Modi. And you're feeling like, all right, well, this run game is at least where it was last year. Right? If not better. And right now it's been worse through so many games. So yeah, that would for me, that one, that's pretty concerning the the lack of ability to run versus a mountain west school like Northern Illinois. And that'll never not be weird. Mountain west. The hell are these guys saying? Illinois. But you know, Damon, I do think all in all like there are some things to be concerned about with the Arizona Wildcats football team right now straight up.
I also think that tonight is a night that we can talk about all those things. We don't have to necessarily focus on all those things because we have something that's beautiful. And that is no if a fetus singing the damn fight song in the locker room after this one. Watch that at your own risk. Who is cutting onions in here, Damon. But yeah, this game, obviously not perfect in many ways imperfect for Arizona. But you do have your crown jewel. No, Fafita breaking the all time program passing yards record in this one. You have Damon live from his home city, the greatest city in the US outside of my home city Tucson, Arizona. But you know, Damon, any other final thoughts on tonight's game. Yeah, my final thoughts are, you know, you got another thing coming when we see each other in person, buddy. Don't you be, don't you be throwing St. Louis's hat into the greatest city on earth ring? No, no one invited blood. No one invited blood at all. Amen. Amen. I run the show here. I could
uninvite you from this post game show right now. All right. So we could, this is mutually assured destruction. All right. Brother, that's what this is. But Damon, it has been a great post game pie. I think we have one more super chat from our guy, easy catch G $5 saying, baseball's fun. But it's even more fun when Pave and Smith hits a walkoff home run. But the doon get me out of here. Get me out of here. He is Damon dog. You could follow him. I guess you're Damon Farrow. You could follow him at Damon dog. How long and how long until it's like Sam lose it? You know what I mean? I mean, write that down. Write that down. Sam lose it. Sam, tweet that. Sam leave it to him to lose the game. Sam leave the show behind and end it now because we clearly have nothing left to talk about. It's the A.C. Wildcat podcast. Thank you.
