Beth Rigby, this is fun. Hello. What do we call this? A collab. It's a collab. It's a collab of two incredible podcast products. Which you should know all about. Electoral dysfunction and... Trump 100. Absolutely. In New York, about 10 minutes ago, Andy Burnham, British Prime Minister and Donald Trump American President had their bilateral, it went well. It went really well, I would say. It seemed to. I think if you were in team Burnham now, you would be breathing a big sigh of relief and planning your big gin and tonic on the way home on the plane later. Because it did seem to go well and it ran over. I always think, Mark, that if you go into a meeting and someone wants to spend more time with you, not less, that's a normally a good sign. And interestingly, the choreography was not quite as we expected. Was it? We thought that they would speak to the media before they had their meeting behind the scenes. But in fact, they did it the other way around, which I think lowered the jeopardy.

Yeah, I think it definitely lowered the jeopardy. And I imagine that that was a prime minister. I mean, he told me yesterday on the plane over that he was looking forward to that meeting. By the way, you said he must have been worried. He must have had a bit of trepidation going into it. Butterflies. Not least because Trump is unpredictable to say the least, right? So he would have had some trepidation. So I think it was good for him. You never know which Trump you're going to get. Yeah, and it was good for him that they had the meeting before the press bit at the end. Because also Mark, as you know, because you've done a lot of these, and I've done a lot of these watching Trump meet various leaders, you never know what question is going to be thrown at Trump, and you never know how he's going to respond. Whereas at least they could come out, and the prime minister could say, well, we talked about this, this, and this, and trying to at least frame some of the question in. So let's go through what we know that they discussed. I mean, first of all, we know that they brought up the Falklands.

In fact, Burnham brought up the Falklands in the private meeting, which is interesting. He sort of clearly wants to deal with that head on. I thought that was going to be one of the issues that he would want to avoid it. Yeah, and I'm very interested to find out later what he says about that. Because I thought that might be something he would want to avoid as well, because it could be a point of conflict between the UK and US, or something a bit uncomfortable. But he clearly wants Trump to understand the UK position on it. It's one of the two issues that the British diplomat who I talk to say is something that they are aware of, they need to keep an eye on. But they don't think that the Falklands is, they think it's mostly noise. Yes. Trump is kind of sitting on the fence about where he stands on the Falklands. His pal down in Argentina, the President Millay, is clearly wants the Falklands as part of Argentina. Last March, not back, the British would say, because it's never been part of Argentina.

That's how they'd frame it. Anyway, the point is that the Burnham clearly thought it was worth bringing that up, dealing with that head on. I guess Beth, because he knows it's an important issue to vote as back home. Yeah, and look, he has to come out of this meeting. And as you said, give a win to people at home. He's going to be under fire over the Chegos Islands. If we're getting onto sovereignty of different bits of land around the world, different islands around the world and territories, I mean, look, on the Chegos Islands, you'll remember that Stammer put together a deal, a long leasehold deal. Trump initially supported that. Then he rode back on it. And then in that, after the meeting on camera remarks, he said he thought the Chegos deal was terrible. Andy Burnham on the plane over was asked about the Chegos deal. And he told us reporters that the UK had put together that deal, and now he's going to be in discussions with the US to make sure they're happy.

Trump isn't happy. So it might be that Burnham knows he's going to get a bit of bad press on that. You know how back at home, the Chegos Islands really has become a lightning rod to some media outlets and pockets of the population that feel really strongly about the UK giving back sovereignty there. But then he brings up the Falkland Islands, which of course, it's also feel very strongly about... And the thing about... Yeah, and the thing about this is that Andy Burnham will soon be on broadcasts. Cameras will do a pool clip. And he'll be asked about the Falklands, and he can leave New York framing it as he did without Trump contradicting him until maybe he gets on a tree social later. Well, exactly. And I said that earlier that Trump can flip on a dime. So all this can go very well. But then tomorrow he could say something completely different to make things all a bit difficult again. I thought the opening remark by Trump was really clearly positive for the British.

He said, I think he's going to be a great Prime Minister. We're with you all the way, Mr. Prime Minister. That's great news, isn't it, for Burnham? Yeah, really good news. And then he said he thought he was a natural business man. And then, you know, and then he also took a bit of a dig at a stammer at the end. And he said the relationship was on the up now, and it had been going a bit awry, you know, with the other guy. So, look, I think Trump was pretty generous if you like to burn him there. He took a decision to make it a comfortable meeting. Burnham, of course, is the smaller partner, the newcomer. Of course, he's going to be nervous and apprehensive about that. But also what we talked about straight after was on all these sort of tense points, instead of finding points of difference and stuff that makes headlines and sort of implies that the special relationship is going a bit off the boil. On all of those points, those two leaders made a point of not disagreeing publicly.

On areas such as Middle East policy and policy around the Israel-Garza situation. And also, of course, Chegos, which you mentioned in immigration as well. I thought that the most uncomfortable that Burnham looked was over the Israel-Palestine thing. And Trump almost called him slightly off-guard because Trump has asked a question about Britain's position on the settlements in the West Bank. And Trump kind of said, well, I don't really know about that. What do you think to Andy Burnham? And he sort of then had to pick up and kind of gather his thoughts very quickly. But again, as you say, they agreed to disagree on that. And I do think that Britain's position led by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband on the Israel-Palestine thing and pushing forward the two-state solution. It's something that the Brits point to as an example where on such a massive issue,

Britain and America can agree to disagree and they can even do it with President Trump. And also, President Trump could have taken a decision there to go in on that. And he chose not to. He did be, I've seen him do it before when he says, I don't really know. When I've seen him do it before, as I said, was when we were together. I know. I've gone, I've just so ill-behaved. When we were at Chegos, you know, and I asked him, remember, right at the end about Mandelson, Mandelson, had just been removed as ambassador and Trump said, I don't really know who that guy is despite Mandelson being pictured in his office and clearly knowing each other. But he kind of did that I don't know. And when I saw him, I mean, maybe he doesn't know the UK changing position on West Bank and Gaza. And the two states he does. Of course he knows, because Barnum also said there, I phoned you to tell you. And then Barnum set out his policy, spoke about his determination

to fight anti-Semitism. And Trump just kind of let it go. So that, of course, was something that Barnum's team would have prepped him for and said, look, you could be in a kind of difficult situation here. But of course, back home, the policy has been popular particularly with Labour voters. And what Barnum does understand is, when Kirsta Amidid departs from Trump positions, especially on the Iran War, actually it helped Kirsta Amidid because back at home Brits don't, you know, they're not that fond of President Trump. And they don't want a Prime Minister necessarily just being supined. So it's not a bad thing for Andy Barnum to be able to state that policy in front of Trump, you know, and kind of state some ground really. Right, Beth, before we go a quick word on President Trump's speech to the United Nations General Assembly, that of course is why he is here in New York.

I was struck by a couple of things. First of all, he's stuck to script. Last year, his auto-cube broke this year. It didn't break, and he stuck to it. And actually, there was a lot of really familiar stuff. Familiar sound bites. It was his greatest hits. How brilliantly he thinks the United States is doing under his premiership, under his leadership. I pick out one thing from it, and it was long, but one thing I thought was very interesting, on Iran, he's now reframed the timetable. He's saying that there isn't going to be a deal on Iran until after the midterm elections in just under two months' time. Why is he reframing the timetable? Well, because he clearly can't get the timetable to work. How he'd like it to. Clearly he'd have liked this war to be over long before now. It's not going to be. He says the Iranians are holding out for a deal until after the election, that he says they're watching very closely. Look, the point is, this is terrible in terms of electoral campaigning here in America, because he knows that people are worried about the cost of living.

And what he's not admitting is that they are attaching their concern with the cost of living to his war in Iran. And the fact he now is now saying that he's not going to be able to get a deal until after the midterm shows us that he doesn't believe he's going to get prices down until after the midterm. So I think it's going to be a bit of a problem at the ballot box. So that was my one takeaway from Trump's mammoth speech here at the UN. Beth, thanks so much for joining us. Well, thank you. The quick take, it has been fun.
