2:04It's time for rapid reactions this Sunday morning on Bobby Burton. He's Jerry Hamilton. This edition brought to you by our friend Adam Loey over at the Loey law firm. Jerry, beautiful day and Austin on Saturday. It was warm and hot, 150 plus on the turf down on DKR yesterday. The big piece here is the explosive plays and the efficiency of the Texas offense. That's my first big takeaway. A much quicker start to 2026 for this offense for Texas. Yeah, and I think Sarkin, Kyle Flandin, that offense had to be super pleased because Texas state came out and they didn't have the extra hat in the box in the run game. And what did Texas do? They wanted to be physical. They wanted to be more physical up front. And Sark talked about that. That's what you got on the first series running behind that left side plus Spencer Shannon and Nick Townsend, which really had a tremendous first couple of possessions blocking at that tight end spot. You know what? Texas state didn't load the box. Texas took advantage.

3:04Hollywood's mothers made his presence known immediately with a couple of swift cuts, really good vision and then accelerated to get outside with a explosive 45 yard run on the first offense of play of the season. Couldn't ask for more than that for Steve Sarkies in this offense. Then as Texas, Texas had success running the football that forced the Texas state defensive coordinators. Hand, he started having to bring the extra hat into the run game as the game moved along. And then what did that do? Open up the downfield passing game. The one on one for Cam Coleman. Ryan, we got a great first half playing off that run game. Even in the second half, it was more Cam Coleman and downfield passing and also in Texas state was forced to bring the extra hat into the run game. As this game moved along, that opened up in mostly over the middle of the field. So it kind of played out how Steve Sarkies and probably thought it might if Texas state came out with a light box, but they had to be pleased with the way they ran the ball early

4:06against that light box. I'll tell you this. This total explosive plays three running, three passing. So pretty equal in some respects. Arch goes 20 of 27 for 305, 40. TDs, one interception. You know what I want to add to this? More production from the tight ends overall in this game yesterday. I felt like not only was Spencer Shannon, you mentioned the blocking, but he also had a nice catch inside the red zone. Nick Townsend turned and ran on one that looked really good. And then Mari Winston had a couple. So it was a well-rounded performance. And even like this, even Hollywood Smothers got into the end zone on a pass play. So it wasn't any one direction that Texas was coming from against Texas state on Saturday. It was every which way. I mean, they scored deep ball. They scored by running every which way. I thought it was a really tremendous performance.

5:07Now your thought on Will Mustchamps first go as defensive coordinator, the University of Texas. Yeah, and I should have said this on offense too. I had somebody tell me Saturday night that this was like a day to install level vanilla game plan by Texas on offense, defense and special teams. That's how feeling this actually was. What does it mean? It's a high state. Nothing because you got to go execute. No, I have to do the same thing because they had a probably a day to level install against ball state. But for Will Mustchamps, I think he got a good look at his pieces on Saturday, especially in the secondary and in coverage because they didn't bring the house. They didn't blitz Raheem Bowles one time. And this may be the only game this year that happens. I mean, he is so effective as a blitzer. They rotated a lot of guys. They played a lot of young guys in the secondary or unless experienced guys in the secondary. Yet, Kobe Black making his first ever start at safety. But I think Will Mustchamp got a good long look at a number of those defensive backs because

6:12Brad Jackson is a really good player. Crystal and a really good slot receiver. But that receiver core while they're good players is nothing compared to what you're about to see the rest of the season. So Will Mustchamp had he needed a good look at all these secondary pieces and begin the kind of formulated plan for what he could do moving forward against this tough schedule Texas plan. So I thought he got some good looks at some guys in game action because again, he's coached a lot of these guys in spring practice and pressed as much as he could in fall practice. That's nothing like a game with 100,000 people. Then after you have a busted coverage, you have to come back and respond to it. He got to see how some guys responded from some negative plays in the secondary. It was a big game or a good game first, first outing four Texas against Texas State yesterday. Jerry, the one thing I would ask you about that, they've got to be happy with the turnovers. Yeah. Two by Rangin Biles, one of which turned into a Grayson Littleton touchdown and then also Maraud Watson on a sack kind of fumble deal that Texas then used to create one of those

7:17famous Sark Spurts that they talk about. 21 points in the third quarter, really bang, bang, bang, bang and all of a sudden arch meanings out of the game. Much champ and Texas had to be happy with the turnovers. And I think they're rather really happy with the turnovers. Is it wasn't twists and stunts, it wasn't a free run and a quarterback. It was all plays that were made within a play without doing anything special. It's Maraud Watson getting off a block, hitting Brad Jackson's elbow. It's Rahim Biles and Old Derek Johnson punch of a football out. It's Rahim Biles reading, being instinctive and not getting sucked up inside and having position to go make an interception. Those are just plays within the game. It wasn't anything forced through a play call. That's when Will Mustamp and your coaching staffs really happy is when guys make plays on their own and it wasn't part of a play call or a game plan. Texas substituted freely and often especially on defense.

8:21Let's talk a little bit though about the offensive line. I mentioned the substitutes on defense on the offensive line. Trevor Goose be played a lot more than anticipated. At least by you and I going into this game. We did not expect to see him literally take every snap with the first unit for three quarter. On Texas football is all about matchups and fit. Because he missed, he looked, he missed the spring coming off the shoulder surgery. He gets back, he has good summer workouts, then he has that non-contact bone bruise, pretty early in fall camp. So he missed key time to get his body in the football shape. And I think that Sart said it, and he felt like he needed to get in football condition for

11:38the long haul of this schedule. They can put the eye on it, they can get him ready to go. But I was surprised that Trevor played that much. I think his family was probably a little surprised he played that much. I'll say that, but you know what? Trevor continues to show this to me. He's a nice guy. He is a guy that you want to put in front of the camera. He's a great representative of the university, but there's a hidden toughness with him. I think if you just see him for the first time, listen to him. You may be not think of him as, oh, this is a tough, tough guy. But he's proven, he's got some real mental and physical toughness about him. Some guys would have set out because you're first round type of draft pick. And do you risk it? Do you risk it if you're not 100% healthy? And Trevor, do you see some real toughness Saturday? Yeah, he did. Absolutely. And I would add this, a couple of the things that I want to mention on this Reb the reactions are some personnel battles that went on.

12:40Lawrence Seymour was healthy enough to go, but Dylan Sikorski played the first couple of, most of the first half, although Seymour saw some action in the first half and then came in and played quite a lot in the second. We'll see if that stays that way going into next week against Ohio State because Seymour was listed first on the jet chart originally. So we'll try to circle back on that. Derek Cooper also from an injury perspective went out in the first quarter with a bum ankle. It looked like he turned it on a second run of the game for him. And then the other position battle worth mentioning in, as far as an update that we want to talk about is Kobe Black. Kobe Black who literally had maybe the hit of the game, actually apparently beat out Derek Williams for that second safety spot. He got the start on Saturday over Williams over over over Derek Williams over Jonah Williams, the whole lot. So Kobe Black looks like he's got that second safety spot next to Jolani McDonnell.

13:43Yeah, and that's a big coverage spot. I mean, Will Musham wants to be able to run some man cover out of that safety spot. And the only way he can do that is if you put this coverage guys on the field. I mean, that's just the reality of the situation. But you know, Kobe, the one thing I wondered about with Kobe, was he going to be physical enough in that first start at free safety to where you think he can play the run in the SEC? And he did show some physicality yesterday. So that was a really good sign for Will Musham. He's got to be able to cover man that safety spots got to be able to cover man, but they still have to be able to come up and play the run in a very physical league. Next piece on rapid reactions here, brought you by Adam Lohan Lohan, offer pass protection. It was a big bug of a last year, Jerry. We all know it. The offensive line was vilified at times, especially early in the campaign. Arch had a pretty healthy pocket for most of the day on Saturday.

14:43Was it perfect? No, one sack for Texas State, but a lot of deep developing routes were allowed, even when they did get close to him. Arch had ample room to run elsewhere because they had cleaned up some things. I felt like the offensive line while the run game was hit or miss. I thought they passed protected reasonably well all game long. Yeah, I do. I thought they had a good pass protection day yesterday. I think the big thing for me with the pass protection is did Texas State have anybody up front that could put pressure on that offensive line, like they're going to see? It's a little bit of an incomplete for me there, but Texas State's best pass pressure did not play on Saturday. But I think with what we saw from the game itself, I thought Texas performed really well in pass. I had a couple of leaky spots at the end of the first half. Arch should have thrown that ball away in the post game on the sack that he took, so

15:47that might not have really been on the offensive line. But the offensive line passed protected well for the most part. I think that's where you see an improved offensive line for Texas. Bob, you hit on not the preseason as with Brandon Baker moving in the guard, I think he's a better pass protector. They're going to be more consistent than DJ Campbell. And I think Melvin Ciani at Wright Tackle is a former left tackle. He can handle pass pro at Wright Tackle. And obviously we know Trevor Guseby is the one thing we wanted to see yesterday was how was the left guard going to be in pass pro and how is Connor Robertson going to hold up? And that's kind of where I have an incomplete was I'm not sure Texas State had the person Nell to test Texas the way they're going to be tested. Oh, in about six days. No doubt. We appreciate him very much. All right, Jerry some other little topics to hit on hidden notes or plays in this game. I'm going to say one first of all and it'll kind of tickle your heart. Kickoffs. We worried a little bit about not seeing kickoffs going in the end zone. I think they may have returned one or two on Saturday. And even the ones they returned were not ones that they necessarily should have. So Johnny, Aspetic had a really good game in that regard then also hit his only field. I know you're a special teams zealot. So I want to mention that. Yeah, I love it.

17:49I think that local important attempt was very important for spedic. Yeah, fair. Next, next piece hidden plays in this game. I mentioned that Maraud Watson sack fumble. That kind of just turned the tables in this game. Also, I would I would put another one down. Amari Winston with an 18 yard reception down the side line. There was another one early where I thought there was a third and 13 or so in the red zone. And Archmaning dumps it down to Hollywood's mother. She makes a touchdown. Those are some of the hidden plays maybe that we hadn't seen before from Texas that I think could impact this team long term. I got a couple more to and I grew with yours Bobby. The first time I saw Ian Jafar play the run. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean Texas state put two and a half on him. Two and a half. Double team and a half.

18:51They stopped trying to run. When he injured forward was in the game and when he would exit the game, they immediately ran at the guy who replaced him. That tells you how some well respected a player is against the run and he's a massive human. But Texas state couldn't move him. Now, will there be some SEC double teams that move him? Sure. It's other NFL players, but Texas state could not move him yesterday with two and a half at times. That was a hidden impressive play because Texas has to have Ian Jafar be a force against the run for this team this year. And it was interesting to see somebody have success going at the place he exited from. Maybe that on tape. Maybe another one. Beautiful catch by Sterling Berkhalter as well. He played well in his debut as a longhorn. The transfer from Wake Forest. Ryan Wingo went for 100 plus camp Coleman. I thought all in all a really strong offensive performance and an opportunistic vanilla performance

19:56from the Texas defense. Is that a good way to kind of cap and capsulate the yesterday's game? I think so. It was very vanilla. And again, when we say vanilla, they still gave up too many leaky plays. Will Muschamp would sit here and say we got the court QB run. They play over the middle. It was a busted cover. He would say they gave up too many. Grayson Littleton gave up inside leverage on dawn too much in a game like that for how quick he is yesterday. So there were some issues that are going to have to be corrected. That's why you play these games. The coach guys up and get those things corrected. But it was still vanilla in plan of attack by the Texas offense, defense and special teams. So I think Texas state is going to be a really good offensive team in the pack 12 Bobby. I nothing changed my mind. Brad Jackson is a good player. They're going to score probably 27, 28, 30 points in most games in the pack 12 this year. Brad Jackson is healthy. So Texas still had some impressive plays. And that offensive line is big for Texas state.

20:59So Texas still did some good things, especially in the third quarter after Will Muschamp probably chewed that butt a little bit of half off. Well, I'll tell you this much. I'll take vanilla ice cream every time. Yes. 59 to 7 is the result. And now Bobby now what a Ohio State's win over ball state mean yesterday in Texas states win over Texas state mean yesterday. Nothing because they are both vanilla. They're both saving up for the chocolate ice cream and sprinkles. And here it comes next weekend because those wins now mean nothing. They got them out of the way. But nobody showed anything yesterday on either team. But they're going to bring the house. Both of them are going to bring the house next Saturday. And I think the house will be a rock and it's that's going to have to be a difference for Texas. Because on Saturday, I will say this on Saturday, tremendous turnout. Great. And 100 plus degree. He. Look, Bivo Boulevard was loaded beforehand.

21:59The whole scene. It was a mob scene almost. It was tremendous show showing by the Texas fan base. And you know what they got what they came for. They got a 50, 59 to 7. A very efficient offense and a defense. Like I said, that was opportunistic. All right. That's going to do it for rapid reactions. We'll have more later today.
