Good morning and welcome to Weekend Sunrise. We want to go straight to New York now and acquire it as fallen over the city as it marks 25 years since its darkest day, September 11, 2001. Terrorists, hijacked planes and flew them directly into the towers of the world trade centre and the Pentagon and one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, killing almost 3,000 people on the day and many more thousand since. The attacks changed America forever, sent shockwaves throughout the world and launched the war on terror and our US correspondent, Miley Hogan, is in New York City for us this morning. Good morning to you, Miley. A somber moment for a country that's still feeling the last so strongly 25 years on. Good morning, David Morn, it's been an extremely emotional day here in New York City and you can really feel how New Yorkers are going through this day and the emotions are still so raw for them.

We're down at ground zero at the moment. They've just opened it back up to the public and hundreds of people have been coming in here to pay their respects and earlier in the day, that is when that official ceremony took place. The first moment of silence falling at 846 AM to honour the moment that American Airlines flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. There were five moments of silence after that, to mark the other moments where those planes crashed and those towers fell. And for the first time this year, there was a seventh moment of silence to honour the victims who have died from cancer and other illnesses linked to 911. We did speak with some family members who lost loved ones that day and it is clear just how war this still is for them. My brother Adam, Adam Peter Areas, and he was the Vice President Operations at Eurobrokers 84th Floor, building two. He cleared off his floor and got the mall out and all of his co-workers thought that he made it out of also, but he went back to help

the fire fired his clear floors and that is when he met his device. When you heard that your brother had gone back to help, did you think that something might brother would? Oh yeah, of course he would be that guy. Sadly there were just so many people with stories like that. They had closed down the streets around the memorial and New Yorkers had gathered. They were just talking to each other, sharing their moments of grief and it really did feel like everyone in the streets had something to say about that day. So many people can remember where they were, who they were with on September 11th, 25 years ago guys. Thousands and thousands of stories are each of them heart breaking and just really interesting to hear Miley talking about there that more than 9000 people have died from illnesses related to that dust that was all around New York City on that day. Really interesting too that there is an entire generation out there, you know, around 100

million Americans who weren't actually born when 911 happened. So really important that the country and the world does commemorate and remember moments like this so that that generation can also feel as acutely as we did. Yeah, that was a very powerful shot there, looking at all of the previous presidents standing together and Donald Trump chose not to attend New York and and was in. I tell us for you. He's mentioned his midterm convention there. All right, let's get some more news now. Here's you. In breaking news this morning, police have charged two people in connection to a deadly mistaken identity shooting in Sydney's West. 40-year-old Joshua McDonald was gunned down in a driveway at Maryland's last Wednesday. An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder after detectives found a drone which they say contains evidence of his involvement. Another man aged 19 has been charged with participating in a criminal group. An investigation has been launched into an optus outage that left triple zero callers struggling to reach emergency services across the country. Live to Christy Mayer in Melbourne, Christy

it lasted about an hour but it had far reaching effects. Hugh, police have been conducting welfare checks across multiple states after dozens of optus customers had trouble getting through to triple zero yesterday. 39 people were affected in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory. The telco confirming the outage happened around one 30 yesterday afternoon and lasted for more than an hour. The reason for the outage is being described as a network issue. At this stage, we don't know if the people who were affected were able to still call for help using another mobile service provider. Optus is already facing up to half a billion dollars in fines over an outage which happened last year. The telecommunications regulator sued Optus over an outage which happened last September and blocked more than a thousand calls for help to triple zero. It's also been linked to two deaths and we're still waiting for an updated statement from Optus this morning. Hugh. Okay Christy, thank you. There's a push to move mushroom killer Aaron Paterson out of solitary

confinement. A prisoner rights group claims housing the triple murderer in a highly restrictive wing for 22 hours a day is unnecessarily vindictive. It's described her conditions as torture, lobbying corrections, Victoria to move her into another unit immediately. The outage this morning over the sentence handed to the man who killed mother and child care worker Molly Tyson. Her ex-boyfriend Daniel Billings has been jailed for 28 years for stabbing her to death in her Forbes home in country New South Wales in the middle of the night. She was the perfect mother no matter where she went she lit up the room. No time behind bars was ever going to be enough. Billings could get parole in 20 years. A warning to residents in Sydney's West this morning with multiple suburbs waking up choked by thick smoke live to Jake Laul this morning Jake what's happened? Yeah good morning Hugh. Look it is a big couple of days for those

hazard reduction burns the RFS has a number of burns happening across the weekend across Sydney in the north in Hornsbyve got burns happening there in the West in Penruth and in the south in the Shire. So Sydney is really being flanked by that thick smoke haze and there isn't too much wind around right now so you can expect that thick smell of smoke to stick around throughout the start of the day. The RFS does say that if you are in one of those areas just try and keep your windows indoors shut and if you do have any kind of asthma condition try and stay inside as much of the day as possible. This is all of course in preparation for what is being dubbed a supercharged fire season thanks to a dangerous combination of a super sized El Nino weather system and what are being called flash droughts which basically act as a hot hair dryer on already warm conditions. So the RFS is no doubt facing a danger or summer ahead and they're doing everything they can right now to prepare Hugh. Okay Jake thank you one in three small business owners has seriously considered shutting up shop this year according to new research. A survey from the Chamber of Commerce

and Industry suggests soaring costs for supplies and utilities as well as red tape are leaving thousands of businesses on the brink nearly half of all owners surveyed reported experiencing high stress. A baggage handler is being praised for going the extra mile at an airport in the Netherlands. He heard a dog whimpering while it was being loaded into the cargo hold and took the time to comfort the pooch. He gave Goku the French bulldog a little scratch and some words of encouragement. Unbeknownst to him Goku's owner was watching film the interaction and gave the worker a shout out online. You know baggage handler sometimes get a bad rap for throwing things around a bit harshly maybe. I want to say how Goku ended up at the other end. That been get's cross. But how could you turn that from a lovely story that Hugh brings us about Goku and if you were that baggage handler he would have been in your car I wouldn't need that dog. You would have taken him straight away gone with the naturally vacuum cleaner. If I was the baggage

handler and I go look I have taken him home he was crying. He was crying. He was taken him home. He's like happy. He's been getting it in a few years.
