Let's break down what happened as the giants get blown out by the Yankees to kick off

their season.

Start breaking down what in the world happened against the New York Yankees as the Giants

get blown out the pros and cons from last night and we'll have some fun at the end of

the show complaining about Netflix.

So if you didn't get to watch the game last night, you didn't miss much at least from

the Giants perspective.

The Yankees had a grand old time.

They were walking through taxis as the Giants were coming out of trolleys and cable cars

and that might have been the coolest thing that happened as far as the Giants are concerned

because not very much happened after that that was positive for the Giants.

They get smacked by the Yankees seven to nothing and it got started early.

All right, the Yankees put up 10 hits.

The Giants put up a measly three.

They only had one air same with the Yankees, but the Giants had a lot of questionable defensive

plays that did not help their cause, even if they didn't get registered as air.

So the same bugaboos hit the Giants early on as they had an opportunity first and third,

now unable to score.

Tell me if you've heard this movie before.

Well, the story or movie that you hadn't heard of is Logan Webb getting touched up and

getting touched up early in a big way.

So I was doing half and half.

I was listening to the radio broadcast and I was watching on Netflix as well, kind of

going back and forth.

And it sounds like there might have been a conversation had that Logan Webb was tipping

pitches.

No, if that got confirmed or not, but the idea was that the Yankees all got their hits

off of off speed pitches and it was a little bit obvious what Logan Webb was throwing.

How that happens at this stage in the game for Logan Webb is a little bit confusing, but

you never know.

There is a lot on the line when you kick off a new season.

We know he was at the road baseball classic.

So maybe there was a tell that they already had maybe it's something that they saw at the

world baseball classic Aaron judge was there, even though it didn't help him.

Who knows, but Logan Webb did not look like himself.

He did make it.

What was it?

Five innings.

He gave up nine hits.

Six earn runs.

He had seven strikeouts and gave up a walk.

Keaton win came in.

He threw one inning.

He had two strikeouts.

He walked somebody as well.

Breweraker came in.

Two innings pitched.

Two strikeouts.

One walk.

And then Caleb Killian at the end.

One inning pitched.

And one strikeout.

So the Giants got a, you know, a decent bit of swing and miss.

I know that's what the Yankees didn't do when they're not hitting home runs.

But the Yankees didn't do it with the long ball.

You had Trent Grisham go off for a ball hit two triples, Ali, and they just kind of stacked

hits, which isn't not normally what they're known for.

But it was kind of a game that to be the opening night game deflated very, very quickly.

So that was kind of the tough part of it to watch.

You know that there's only one game going on.

And of course, you're going to be watching your Giants versus anybody else anyway.

But there really wasn't much to watch pretty early into the game, which made it a bit

hard to stay engaged and to okay, now it's going to be this inning.

Now it's going to be that inning.

And then you looked up and it was seven nothing.

After what, however many endings had passed five innings, whatever it was, and you thought,

all right, based on what the Giants are doing on the offensive end, this game is pretty

much over.

They tried to get something going pretty late in the game, but it wasn't going to fly.

They made some good contact after they took out Max Fried.

We know how the Giants are against left handed pitching.

They're essentially the worst team or they were the worst team last season against left handed

pitching.

So that was kind of on brand for them.

One of the hits that they got was a ball that got lost in the sun anyway, so it wasn't

as if I know I hit to hit it to line driving the books, but it wasn't as if they even touched

up Max Fried a little bit.

So yeah, man, just a deflating game and Tony Vitello does not get his first win to kick

off the the 2026 season, at least not yet.

This is what Tony Vitello had to say about the game.

This is a half painful, half easy press conference to do because it was pretty straight up.

He said, whichever phase you pick out, we just work as good as we are capable of being

tonight and they played well.

So it worked out the way it did.

Of course, he said a lot more than that, but you know, I mean, what are you going to do?

You don't hit.

You don't feel it particularly well.

You don't pitch particularly well against one of the best teams in the league, probably

how it's going to happen 10 times at a 10.

I think for me, it would have just been nice.

Like an L is an L. If you're going to lose a game, you can lose a game.

But with that crowd, with the energy, with obviously it being opening night, this new

thing, you got Netflix, you got the thing from Wednesday throwing out the first pitch.

All this up, James Winston's running around for some odd reason, all this stuff going

on, it would have been nice to just put up some runs, right?

I think if you're in the crowd and spent that money, let me know comment if you were there.

Let me know how the vibe was.

And if you're in that crowd, even if you know it's an L, once you get to the fifth, sixth

inning, it would have been nice to just put up a couple runs, how about a home run, something

to at least give the crowd something to cheer about.

It was nothing.

And I think that's what is making people overreact to this.

For me, the defense, look, if you put Elliott Ramos out there, there's going to be things

that happen.

And again, not literally an error, but just certain small things that could affect you.

And ultimately, I don't know that it truly affected you because you did nothing on the

offensive end last night.

But the defensive end, we know this thing is going to fluctuate, really nice play from

Harrison Baylor.

We'll talk about that as well.

But offensively, I know it's Max Fried, but to put up three hits and not even sniff

any type of rally, that to me is the bigger thing that I'm taking away from it.

It's one of 162.

I get all that.

I'm not tripping off Logan Webb, at least not yet.

I'm not tripping off the defense.

I don't really have a high ceiling on the defense anyway and plays like that kind of mental

mishaps.

Those are just going to happen.

It's part of the game.

But to me, when you're hitting the way the giants we believe are going to hit, you should

be able to maybe not overcome them, but at least give yourself a shot, at least be entertaining

at the very, very least because that was a snooze fest because it all happened essentially

in one, one in two innings for the Yankees.

Then it was a bunch of nothing, right, all this build up this whole time and it all led

to nothing.

So to me, that was my bigger takeaway, the lack of offense.

Look, I'm excited to see what they do tomorrow.

Of course, but the idea that you're going to come out, put up three hits.

That's a problem.

Without the lineup, the lineup decision, Tony Vitel, gave a breakdown of why he went

with Casey Schmidt at first base.

I'm sure people were surprised when they saw that and it made a little bit of sense.

But the ins and outs of who's in, who's out of its incarnation or Bryce Eldrigebin or Casey

Schmidt, that's not really what I'm focused on.

I'm focused on the fact that the big money guys, once again, didn't do anything worthy of

big money.

But it's just one game.

It's just one game.

So we'll have to wait and see.

But last night with all eyes of the baseball world on the Giants and the Yankees, the Giants

did not show up.

None of them did.

Absolutely none of them did.

And that is not something that we were hoping to see to kick off the 2026 season.

On the other side, let's get into some of those pros and cons.

We already talked about a little bit of them, but let's dive into some more details where

things went right, not a lot.

Some more things went wrong for the Giants, more locked on Giants coming up.

Next segment with you and there were some pros along with a good bit of cons as the giants

lose seven nothing to the New York Yankees.

So let's go through the pros first.

I really liked Luis arise at the top of the lineup.

I've been saying that I wasn't sure that was the best spot for him when we did our locked

on Padres, a combination extravaganza crossover.

We talked to our guy Havi and he said he doesn't like Luis arise in the two spot.

Now I think in theory, he would work there, but they had him lead off and he got on

basic a couple of times, had a hit, also got on with the walk.

So it is what it is.

We might see him move around based on who's on base and that was at first against a lefty.

So clearly the giants do believe in Luis arise regardless of who's on the mound and which

arm they're throwing with.

I thought Keaton win looks solid to go from being one of the bigger surprises being named

to the opening day roster and getting thrown in the game.

Obviously, the stakes weren't high.

It wasn't a high leverage situation, but he still came in and did what he had to do.

So I didn't necessarily worry too much when he was on the mound because he took care of

business.

The play from Harrison Bayter.

This is the type of stuff that we are going to need to see from the giants and their defense

throughout the season.

This is the type of stuff that we did not see enough from the giants last season.

So we got a little glimpse of it.

We got a little glimpse of what we saw last season.

So hopefully we see more of the Harrison Bayter stuff than the Elliott Ramos and honestly

Willie Adomas didn't have a great game defensively.

He made a couple defensive miscues as well.

And that leads us into some of the cons of the defensive issues that we've seen before.

You know, I mean, some of this stuff is a bit unavoidable because throughout the course

of the season, errors are going to happen.

But what's the one thing you used to hear back in the day when you played baseball at any

level?

Every coach said this, hey, we'll live with the physical mistake.

It's the mental mistakes.

Those are the ones that are good at burning, right?

If you don't know where to go with the baseball, that's going to be a problem, right?

If you don't know where your cutoff man is, or if you miss your cutoff man, which is

technically a physical issue, but are a physical error, but those are the problems, right?

You over throw somebody, we can live with that.

It's the mental stuff that that'll destroy the ball club.

So early on, you have Elliott Ramos, who is in the outfield.

He double clutches and then he throws to William Domes, who William Domes was set up

as the cutoff man, but because what, there was a man on what second and third or there were

two men on the back runner who hit the now double.

If Elliott Ramos goes to second, then he stays at first and maybe you get a double play

to get out of it or whatever the case is at the very least, he's not in scoring position.

So those are the types of things that don't come up as errors proper, but they do, or

they can end up burning you because now a base knock scores to instead of scoring one.

So that's the type of stuff that you're going to have to continue to work on, right?

And that's the type of stuff with Elliott Ramos.

It's not necessarily all the time, right?

Missing a fly ball.

He's going to catch a fly ball.

He's a major league outfielder.

But those types of decisions, that is going to be the difference in a very tough NL West.

And it's definitely going to be the difference against very good teams in general.

Wasn't the difference last night because they got smacked, but we can't just ignore it

because it wasn't the game changer last night.

It's still led to a negative momentum swing for the Giants and it was hard to overcome

all of it.

It's not on Elliott Ramos.

Just something that got pointed out.

William Thomas had a throwing error.

Okay, well, that throw was wide when he tried to throw the second, then he had another

throwing error.

So that wasn't a great day for Willie Adamus and, you know, they're going to go back to

the drawing board that Luis Sarai's ball.

He said that that he dove for it was a base hit, said that he was playing him pull.

You know, look, he's not going to have the most range in the world.

So to me, that's on the coaching staff.

You have to put him in the best positions possible.

And if that's where they wanted him, they're still trying to figure out, okay, where is

his range?

So one thing I will say, and I heard it from a couple of people within the media, and

I'm not going to name names because it's fine.

But the idea that well, they didn't look anything like this in spring training.

This is what we've been saying.

Spring training isn't reality.

It's not reality, right?

The speed is different.

The players are different.

You're always going to look, you're always going to look better in spring training.

You're doing inner squads.

Yeah, you're playing other teams.

You're playing teams that aren't even in major league baseball.

Of course, it's going to look different.

We do the same thing in all these sports.

You ever watch hard knocks?

Whoever is the feature team in hard knocks, you truly believe is going to win the Super Bowl.

Because the every play is good, everything is going the right direction.

Oh, it's so hard to make cuts.

We have so many good players.

And then that team ends up barely making the playoffs or missing the playoffs.

Like training camp for the NBA, every team, oh, we got this guy.

We got that kind of, the rookies look great because they're playing each other.

Then you get through the actual games and you're not just playing each other.

You're playing the Yankees, you're playing the Dodgers, you're playing high level teams.

And now all of a sudden, it looks different.

Well, that's because it is different.

It is different.

All right, real quick, just on the lineup because I know some people were a bit curious

as to why did you pull down Bryce Eldridge and then you didn't even start Raffi Devers

at first base, right?

I saw that a lot and there was an answer for it, obviously, from Tony Vitello.

And the long and the short of it is that Tony Vitello said first base today, Schmidt

starting with Devers at DH is related to Devers missing time in camp with hamstring tightness.

He has played some first base since returning, but it makes sense to go with Schmidt today.

This is Alex Pavlovich yesterday with the left hander on the other side and an off day

tomorrow.

So I believe we'll be seeing, we'll be seeing Raffi Devers at first base on Friday.

And yeah, a lot of people were going to question the lineup regardless of what it is.

So they went Luisa Ryze, lead off, Matt Chapman at third base, hitting second, Raffi Devers,

hitting third, Willie Adamus hitting fourth at short subjong, who Lee hitting fit, Elliott

Ramos hitting sixth, Casey Schmidt hitting seventh, Patrick Bailey hitting eighth and Harrison

Bader hitting ninth.

I actually like the Luisa Ryze, Harrison Bader combo.

I think you could put Jung who Lee in place of Harrison Bader, but for some reason, I get

it.

He's got a little bit of pop, but for some reason, they just seem to love Jung who Lee somewhere

in the meat of that lineup, going back to Bob Melvin.

They had him hitting three, four, five.

I just don't see that with Jung who Lee.

I don't think that's his bag.

They seem to think so and they're going to leave him there for as long as it makes sense.

I would just go one, two with him and Luisa Ryze, if you're going to do it that way.

You could put a rise at the nine.

You could put Bader.

I like Bader in the meat of the order more.

It's the first lineup.

We'll see if they change anything, but yeah, a lot of people had comments on the lineup.

All right, you didn't think we would get out of here without talking about what in the

world we witnessed last night.

It was a spectacle and I told you that I would not complain about it until after we watched

it.

And there's so many things.

I don't know if I'm going to remember all of them.

Look, the James Winston thing.

It was a little hot and cold for me.

Obviously, he is a huge personality.

He is hilarious and he played baseball at Florida State.

He was a dual athlete for an amount of time as he played football and obviously baseball.

It was cool that he did play Harrison Bader back in the day.

So it was funny seeing that but it just came off like it came off like Netflix didn't realize

who their audience was, right?

If you're going to Netflix to watch Yankees giants at five o'clock chances are you're

probably a pretty, a pretty serious baseball fan or at the very least you know about the

game and opening day, opening night, whatever you want to call it means something to you.

So it was almost as if they were catering to fans that were just there just because

it sounded like something fun and didn't think that the baseball could be the main character.

No pun intended because it was Netflix, but that's just it.

This is the day, one of the only days where it is the main character, where it can be

the main character.

If you were to do this Netflix night in the middle of June, I don't know that anybody would

have the same type of pushback because we all know we can all admit that baseball the season

can get long, but you don't need something like that on opening night.

You don't need that.

Just let the baseball be the baseball.

You know when you get a good steak and people get mad at you, hey, you're putting a one

on it.

Hey, what are you doing?

You're putting ketchup on it.

Just let it be, right?

Sometimes when there's not enough season in on something, then you might have to throw

some sauces on it, but there's plenty of seasoning on two of the most storied franchise

in the history of the game, playing at the most beautiful ballpark in the league on opening

night.

That's plenty.

You don't need dancers.

We don't need the trolley.

I know some people thought it was cool.

We don't need the subway cars.

We don't need James Winston after the L rolling up in what a hot dog cart making the, making

the Yankees players eat hot dogs unnecessary.

Was it off putting?

Was it offensive to me?

No, it was just terribly unnecessary and it felt like Netflix was catering to the

the fan that just happened to be there, not even know about casual fan, the less than

casual fan versus fans that know the game and understand what opening night is about,

because that's why you're there besides all the Netflix commercials while you're on Netflix.

So you had that as well.

The panel, the play by play, I mean, the scoring bug was weird, but it is what it is.

The panel was cool, you know, seeing Barry is always going to be a good time, Albert

Pujos and Elle Duncan.

That was kind of her first who Ron, she always kind of has that kind of sarcastic personality.

So again, fine.

I don't know that they hit it out the park, but it just probably wasn't meant for opening

night.

It was meant for it.

It was meant for a day that needed juice and that night didn't need juice.

It didn't need extra bells and whistles and the play by play was fine.

They all did their jobs, don't get me wrong.

It was just a little bit much for that night.

Run that back in June, run it back in August, right?

Run it back in May, but not necessary on opening night.
