3:19This time we're asking the questions to Steve, how are you Steve? I'm very well Steve, after what was a very good win yesterday I thought. To one, just what we needed, three points, balance and back after what we suffered in earlier in the week against Leeds. Great stuff, mate. Great stuff. Okay, the questions, there we are asking everybody on any UFC matters this week. Start with early days, but how are you feeling about the season so far, mate? An interesting question, Steve, because if you'd asked me this in pre-season, what my expectations were for the season, I don't think I could have answered you, to be perfectly honest. After it, we could have answered honestly. That's for a fact. You're ahead and you can go what this season had in store for us after the travails of the close season, the players leaving, the manager leaving, a new manager coming in that we didn't really know anything about it, etc.

4:20It sounded like a little bit there, didn't it? But I think I went in with quite a close mind. Is that the word you used? Quite closed in the fact that I wasn't expecting too much. I thought that everything that we'd said about three months that we thought at the end of the last season, we were heading in, we're completely set. The phrase that we used on our podcasts that seemed to be picked up by many journalists of the evening period. We knew that this was going to be tough. We knew players would be leaving and the way that the season had ended and the way some of the performances had been that we needed it, we needed change. I think a lot of us were frightened to say that the change needed to be the manager, because a lot of us still had faith in anyhow. But once the decision was made, we very, very quickly had to regroup and get the grips

5:20with the fact that this was a much, much bigger change than possibly we even imagined. We went to you and I along with Stewie and the Heade and went up to Scotland to Murryfield of the game. We were left after 60 strokes, 70 minutes between us thinking, what the hell is this season got in store? We immediately clicked in, we're going to finish 17th. Some of us were a little bit more sort of apprehensive. Some of us were a little bit more optimistic and I think when for 15th, that was about as far as we would go. But you know what, we look at where we are after five league games. We played Liverpool and previously we dropped points against them. We played Bournemouth, we were previously dropped points against them. Spurs, I thought that was a great result away.

6:21A lot of people make a lot of fuss over the fact that we had two shots and two goals. But you know what, you've got to put the ball in the back of the net and you've got to clean sheets and that's exactly what we did in terms of making sure that you could see your game out. Leeds I've taken it as a blip, an absolute cauldron at Elendrode. Got a spank in but I thought in the first 20 minutes we would do an OK, I thought more than holding our own. And then of course the injury to the midfielder Gonzales, that kind of sort of put the break on us a little bit. And then of course you get hit by very very quick goals, taking you up the halftime. And we never really recovered. We see where has go down at that point. You know if you've been asking me this question after the Leeds game Steve, I'd be sitting here going, you know what, this is like anyhow Mark II in terms of the performance I've just

7:22watched. But then we turned up on Saturday and I thought we absolutely rear-roaded home. I know they came back with us in the last sort of 15 minutes but that was after changes that would be made. I thought we got off to a fantastic start and I thought that we dominated the game for long, long periods. I thought we were more energetic. I thought we were more resourceful. We weren't more physical. We were more physical in a suppose in the fact that we were sort of swarming around them. But they were very much leaving their foot in and trying to stop the game and stop our play. And I started in that game. I'm looking at I'm thinking there's a bite about this club. There's a bite about this team. The regrouped after what was a poor performance and there's something there to admire.

8:22So I'm looking now after those five games and I think all is okay. It's not the shambles that some in the press were trying to make out, especially the national press, with Eddie Mleven and players moving on to Nali Lleven for lots of money and questions being asked about why he wanted to leave the club and go to Tottenham. Very much disappointed in the whole Bruno situation. The manor, the manor in which he went about his move rather than the fact that he left. I thought as a team captain he could have done an awful lot more. A lot more to explain himself. A lot more to just come out of the fans and go, Lads, look, I've had four great years this year and I want to move on. I met that stage when we created 28, 29. I need to be, I need to be looking ahead and securing me family. That's the thing. But you never did any of that. He sneaked off the World Cup, said absolutely nothing.

9:26Played a game with the fans and with the press right the way up until the end. Even a lot of people praised them for coming back and turning up with the manor. But I think that was just contractually him protecting himself. And off he went and you look at that and you go, you know what? Good luck to you, you know, but this football club is bigger than you and we're going to prove it. Hopefully. So I'm now looking at the performances. I'm looking at where we are and I'm thinking, you know what? This isn't too bad. Where ahead of where we would have been if we played those same teams last season. I think we're three or four points better off. And not a five games, but after five games against the opposition. And that we're faced so far. So that's a plus a very, very big plus. And for a new manager, now we've got we're going into this international break with an opportunity for him to refresh.

10:31And I think for the players to refresh. Because I think it's been a bit of an emotional roller coaster. It's bound to take its toll mentally as well as physically on the players that are left in the squad. The new players coming in. Players haven't were just to a new team. Players that are already part of the squad haven't just a new team mates and having a new manager. And with new ideas, new formations, a new attitude. Language barriers that are bound to have existed with some of the new new lads coming in. And I think the transfer, the international break is going to help us in that respect. Just to recharge. I think it's going to help the fans as well. Because I think we've been in a bit of an emotional roller coaster since the, since all the changes and then the season started. I think we probably could do with a little bit of break. I know it sounds ridiculous after five games. But I'm very much, my glass is very much awful at the moment Steve when it comes to my feeling so far.

11:35Okay, so what are your views on the new sign in Steve and who has impressed you the most? Right. Well, I suppose you look at the new sign into anything. Lot of young lads, lot of young players. Little to no experience in the Premier League. And Gonzales is the only one really that's got Premier League experience and we've spelled but not that many games. I think something like 50 games for man city, but there again you've got to look at that and think that's much as the city that's the, you know, that's the benchmark that the club that's with. It's been at the top for, you know, the top of the Premier League for five of the last six seasons. You know, winning everything in all competitions, competing with a very, very intense manager that's been pushing everybody. So you think right well, apart from apart from Gonzales, who is there and you think well, bam, guys, when you had only played 18 on 20 first team games for his club.

12:37Two of a very similar, you know, a young lad was so, some of us saw a little bit of them the world cups. Someone was didn't purely because he wasn't on my radar. We probably had to go back and look at some of the most performances to actually remain ourselves. If that's what you're into, I didn't personally, I wanted to see him in a black and white shirt and see what it could do. And he's got paste to burn. He's quick. He seems to have the right attitude, you know, when he's come on. It's, I think it's very difficult when you're, when you're short of stature and you're a wing out and you're relying on your speed. And the ball's got to be fed to you. We've seen what happened with the Langa last season where, you know, very, very quickly you can go into your shell of things on going right. So maybe some managers doing the right thing by just sort of bringing him and Bamba into it gradually. I look at the goal keep us well, take a owner check absolutely cannot fault the kid. You know, the number of shots he's faced, the number of saves he's made the way that even in a four one defeat against lead.

13:44So I would have probably had him as one of the match. For the honest, that says enough for a lot for his performances. He seems to be good on his feet. He's quick. There was one little incident yesterday where he sort of nearly mucked up what he redeemed himself with two very, very quick saves. And I think that that will probably add to his confidence, rather than, you know, I think it could have gone in the back of the net, then it might have been slightly different. But yeah, gotta be impressed. I'm sure you've heard how does the injury early doors going over on his ankle like you did unfortunate for the lad. But what we've seen in the sort of the preseason, you know, in some of the friendies with the these that he's managed to get on. You think and this kid looks capable. He'll get many outings. I can see. Hona checks going to cement these own place in that in that team. And he's going to be very, very difficult to dislodge given the performances he's put in so far. Long may continue for him and for the club, by the way.

14:45And then. It needs us to show and stir who. You know, you hear of these kids who come from the Ajax Academy. I think everybody says they've got to be fantastic and there's been. There's been many a false dawn with athletes that have gone to clubs with a reputation. But Sean Stern has. I'm not going to say the word surprised me. He's shocked me with what he has at his disposal for such a young lad. And he. I thought his performance yesterday. Was the nearest we'll get to a Bruno Gamarech in midfield. He's got that gift of being able to play on the half turn. In either direction. He can he can see where he's passing is going to be before he's even got the ball. And he can change if that pass suddenly closes down or that pass closes down.

15:46He can he knows there's another one and he knows where he's going to do it. And where it's going to play it. He also plays the ball forward. An awful lot. And I like that in a midfielder. He's not one of these midfielders who's constantly looking. Playing in the central position, playing deep. To just played out to his wing as or to his full backs rather. And he's very much playing. And I think it's part of the formation and we can talk about that. And I'm sure over the next few months, this is going to be a big thing in discussions with your castle fans. But when he's got that three in front of him plus a target striker. So he's got the four men. And he's got one person alongside him. He very rarely plays it to that one. He plays it. And he's taking out opposition midfielders. And that's what Bruno did an awful lot. And he's he's not frightened to put his foot in and tackle. But he doesn't often have to do it because he's so gifted and be able to read a game. So I think of all the players. And I haven't mentioned Niko yet, other than the fact that he's come from Man City. But he looks he looks an establishment feel that he looks like he knows what he's doing. He can. He's different. Sean's due because he can ping a 40 yard ball over the top to the wide men. Sean's does very much. On the ground playing those diagonal passes forward. And. Gonzales is is is looking. He's looking for the long ball, which is great because he's he's wanting to bring the wingers in. So I think we've got a nice little blend there in midfield.

17:48And if. If we can all get them. If we can get them fit and we can get them sort of on a level, especially the younger, the two younger lads. Understand what the premier is about. And the pace of the Premier League. And because it's a big learning curve for them. I think that we've got an awful lot to be thankful for in terms of the. In terms of the new signings that we've got. I think. The only one that I haven't mentioned so far is Pardo. And that's because. You know, I've only seen him in the in the two games. And. Please gamey plow the loan for. And I don't think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he could. I think he struggled a bit with understanding where whistle was going to be. It's some points. He was wide and some points. He was down the middle. I thought. In the. In the following game. Against whole. We saw a different side only saw him being able to unleash his pace.

18:51He was closing down. He was constantly looking for the ball. Uh, so, so that was involving. Uh, so that was really impressive because it showed that play. It, it's quite a bit. It, it the general he's. What is. Is. Consolately moving. And that's what you want from Stryka sometimes you don't necessarily want someone who should stand and still waiting for the ball. You know, not everyone has the goal scored a building of a Mickey Kwenhop puedan stand and wait for the ball. And then do something with it. Is more. I suppose a quinoa. spinning and going around. I think it's going off a lot more to go before it becomes an Andy Cole but wouldn't it be great if he turned into an Andy Cole but I suppose that lends us the question of what is he, is he a strike arrow, is he a winger and for me the jury's out on that. I think it's a little bit early to say whether he's a strike or a winger or a stroke wide man. I think he's got the attributes to be either and I think once he gets into goal scoring opportunities and can put the ball away and we'll see a different

19:56side to him and I think it's quite exciting. But of all the signings I've got to say that the chance to is the one who so far has really, really impressed me the most Steve and wasn't interested, wasn't it interesting yesterday to see what 15, 20 Ajax fans with their Ajax shirts with Sean Sturth, 48 Wondering Round Town, there were a lot of them were in the strawberry after the match and I think that says an awful lot about what the young man has done over at his boyhood club and what those fans think of him to come all the way over in the Ajax kid to watch in your castle game and primarily to watch Sean Sturth says an awful lot and I think it's surprising off a lot of people in town on Saturday afternoon as well but boy did they make themselves known and to a man they were all telling us last night in the pub what they thought is Sean Sturth and what we had as a footballer and how

21:01there would be back it so yeah Sean Sturth for me is the one who's impressed Steve. Okay has Matthias Jaisle impressed you in his first seven weeks at the club? He certainly has impressed me. A breath of fresh air was in management speak is what we've got he's got a personality about them he's got an air of confidence about them it's a difference sort of confidence to Eddie I think with Eddie's Eddie always came out to me as being very much a football man someone steeped in sort of how can I put it the textbook the theory you know studied the game studied other coaches as we know you went to athletic on Madrid at one point when when he left Bournemouth to to actually study you know the ways of Spanish football I think yes there's very much his own man I think he has already pinpointed

22:05the way that he wants his teams to set up what he wants from his teams and I'm sure he's a very very demanding guy behind the scenes but he's he's coming over quite amiable I think I think he's little contradonced with the press with the way that he's putting some of them down it's quite interesting because I'm sure that's endearing them to to the to the fan base I think a lot of people when he when he hear I'm given those sort of um Brian Kloff stroke Alex Ferguson type of responses and reposts I think yeah we're all we're all laughing them we're all going up he's going to make their life hell he's going to make it difficult for them and sometimes maybe he's after an easy ride over the last few years some of them you know need that and I bet some of them are enjoying it and it's given them food for thought and how the question him because he's

23:06he obviously doesn't suffer food gladly and he's very sharp isn't he when he's when he's come and work with those reposts I think somebody asked a question after the game yesterday about formation and not playing some of the other players and then he's responsible well who would you play it instead who would you who would you take enough you know who would they have replaced and of course nobody answered and quite rightly nobody could answer it but it was the very fact it you got them to think you know he's going it's basically his way of saying you know what lads think about the questions they're asking us think about the answers you're going to get if they're not very good questions um don't don't come to me or what is basically going to be a headline or don't come from me for for a basically a strapline it's not going to be there you're not going to you're not going to get that from me and so he's put them down in a way cleverly

24:10intuitively but the most important thing is what we've seen on the football pitch for these teams and I think we take the leads game out and let's call that a blip let's call that an injury after 20 minutes that ended up having to reshape the the whole setup and everything could well have been geared to playing everything through Nico and he wasn't there so you know people have stepped up the plate and perhaps weren't up for it or weren't uh were incapable of doing so at the time and then in a in a in a hot bed at Ellen Road it can be very very difficult you know because woman in the ascendancy and next thing you know the crowds getting behind the home team and they get ahead of steam and I think that's pretty primarily what happened um if I have a criticism I could I could look at yesterday's game against all and I could say you didn't just make one change when you've brought um charon you you put char into center back so you moved center back out to

25:20right back in chow you took the fall back uh right back in maili in the midfield and within three or four minutes you'd conceded the goal and maybe see Mike learn from that and and think you know what in future like for like you know I'll take a midfielder off because I have to uh I'll put a midfielder on I'll not adjust me back for because that was two changes in the back four that could we could if we wanted to point the finger and say costus a goal um a mistake by maili in the midfield losing the ball in the man I already did losing his man um and we're all over the place at the back we were we were kind of just fine now our feet I think in the in the in the central back center back positions I thought charon and um in botman we're doing really really well I thought we'll hold on their own um I thought there was there's quite a battle that was going on and I thought there were there were doing able I think and and so I don't like to say change meaning another change

26:22and a third change I think it upsets the it will have been all around the team and so if I did have a criticism of of Yai Slur it was that um and it nearly caught us out we were you know they were very much in the ascendancy once they got the goal I think the penalty if the penalty had gone in it would have been a totally different game but um I think that uh I know when we were watching it George was convinced there was an argument going on over who was going to take the penalty and I thought it was just that sort of gamesmanship that you know we adopted a couple of seasons ago where you hand the ball to someone the whole the ball for ages and you know trip year and then he throws the ball to somebody else I thought we're trying to play that but the very fact was the goalkeeper then decided he would go on walk about and end up getting booked um just after the given whistle the ball and whistle then had to stand around well the referee talked to him and then then he he went around kicking the post and I think whistle got caught out and it wasn't he hit the ball well he put it in the right corner but he didn't have the right

27:26amount of hate on it and it made it very very easy for a keeper of what six foot four six foot five to stretch and not go around the post um but getting back to Yaisla I think that that would that would be a criticism that would hope that was something that he learned um something that he thought maybe felt as though was gone and going to be a good move but generated into something that could well have cost us but all in all you've you've got to be impressed by someone who in such a short period of time has galvanised a group of young men, young players and very very young players in some some instances and has the confidence to stick what four under 17s or 17 year olds on the bench in a Premier League game um some might argue that that's already hard um but the very fact is that you know he put them out there and he could well have had to use them and he

28:29lived known that in in his own mind you know very centuries you know things hadn't hadn't played out like they did he may have had a call on one or two of those lands and he obviously felt as though that they were the right the right person out the put out there being interested to see whether any of them make the bench when everybody else comes back fit um but this is the sort of manager we've got you know um it's I don't know what it is with him um he's he's got that smile about him that that's I'm not quite the smirk he's got that smile about him and I think you know if my daughter has anything to go by um he's got this he's got this charisma that um that certainly impresses the ladies as well Steve okay uh what's your thoughts on the training ground announcement that we had a couple of weeks ago and the plans that have been put out there now Steve um well everybody said that we you know made this thing about we have to

29:30have a world class training ground and I think the fact that it's taken them so long to decide what the what they were doing when it was the worst kept secret in in Britain that it was going to be at Walsingham or certainly up on that neck of the woods um you and I know that Sir John Hall had taken on that that plotterland many many years ago you and I've been to that plotterland Steve we've seen what's available um we we know exactly what Sir John Hall's plans were for it we knew what he was going to do with the hall when you where the training pitches were you know because he told us um the fact that it didn't come off was more to do with sort of Mike Ashley and you know you know what lads I'll replace these um these rubbish bins with um with a bigger rubbish bin and so you can stand in them as a nice bucket um you know the the club we all know the club went into it into a chill into a little hiatus that had you in the actually years um but the fact that

30:31they've taken nine on five years to get this plan right tells you that it's it's important it's an important decision to get right um once that spades in the ground I don't think it'll take them long to uh to produce something and if the plans are anything to go by something really really special a 190 million pound investment in a training ground is one thing the size of that training ground 265 eight as a something ridiculous like that um it's going to make it one of if not the biggest training ground in Europe um and you think and what else is going to go on there you know is that going to be is is when the when the final plans are are sent to the planners and given approval is there going to be something for the community there is that going to something that's going to stretch down as far as public steds and um you know is that going to be something for community football um where will the women's games slot in what what's in

32:38the point where you'll suddenly see um lift off um to an even greater extent with Nicas United because I think roundabout that time is the training grounds coming into fruition I think that's when we'll suddenly hear about the new ground as well I think you know once they once they start on on and getting that phase uh well and truly underway I think then we'll start to hear about you know what their plans are for St James's Park be it a Revising James's Park or a new St James's Park um I heard you know people are talking about Coca Cola and I I heard that maybe Zaddi Das may get involved with the training complex and that was something I heard about 18 months ago and I wouldn't be surprised if if that um was on the cards um what I heard was Adidas were looking around Europe for something similar to the to the Adidas complex that they have at their headquarters but also something that would involve their an element of community within it and uh I think

33:44is we as we move forward to be interested to see something like that happen in Steve so um it's exciting times it's it's going to be I think it's with the trainer grounds going to be case of watch this space because I think we're going to be very very surprised of what goes on up there um the facilities are going to be second to norm we know that um and I think we've we've heard in the past from players that have gone to Saudi uh for preseason training uh or outbreaks people have gone to Dubai uh people who have gone to uh Kitar players and clubs and the facilities that were put in there for the World Cup um and the facilities that are going forward for the for the World Cup in Saudi I think we're going to have something like that uh something that people are just going to go wow this is unbelievable and that is the sort of thing that excites professional footballers you know the thing this is my workspace this is this is not a a place next to a railway line um

34:47that's it's got trains flying past it continuously um where the pictures may be you know susceptible to a little bit of um surface water um where the the training facilities are though more than adequate they're not sort of trained facilities that you would have for what ostensibly or thoroughbred footballers you know these are like the thoroughbred race horses these are the crem de la crem and that's what we want to attract constantly to nukassinated and that's what the training ground will hopefully will bring and uh again it's all positive Steve it's all positive yeah okay you've touched on a little bit uh with regards to the uh the ground uh as a bettman Steve if you are going to put a bet on it do you think we'll move uh from some james's park to a new stadium what do you think we'll build on some james's park are I allowed to start by saying I'm not a bettman you can of course you can yeah

35:51what I'm not a bettman um my grade two shea say maths I'm telling you our struggle with odds Steve I struggle with numbers that they they I can write anything down but when it comes to numbers it's not my game um so I've always steered well here with of bettman and gambling um I don't know the difference between four to one in fact the one and one to four I tell you that that's the honest truth um but this is this whole talk of the new sin james's park or are the existing change james's park uh tidied up and turned into something for the 21st century um it's it's kind of like heart and head isn't it your head says we need to we need something of you know when you're looking whether the clubs are going we need something seventy seventy five eighty thousand you look at figures like 1.3 million people applying for tickets for 19 the season

36:53over and above um those currently in the ground you work that out that's 40 I think I work it out with something like 44 000 people are applying for what a figure that we don't actually know when it comes to the ballots Steve because the clubs never announced how many tickets are available in each ballad at ballad yeah but it's averaging out at 44 000 people a game if you're talking about the figure looking at the figures the club said which is 1.3 million people are clambering or have clambered over 19 games for tickets at uh it's in james's park last season so you look at that you think well the ground's not big enough you go sometimes you go to a game and they might be like we're not hitting you know we're barely scraping 50 000 and so you begin to think well what's gone wrong what you know where's where's that where's that brick come from what's happened have the as the ticket arms been shut have the have the not ballad the cell tickets for that

37:55game or what up you know it it baffles me at times but the role that other clubs are on the role that the football seems to be on at the moment is an especially after the world cup and you saw the facilities that the stadiums over there you're thinking it's big-eyed ground it's bigger it's better for facilities bigger grounds and that leads you into something absolutely so a stadium size for your castle where they'll put it we don't really don't know yet and whether it's and if I may it has to be if it if it was going to be no ground has to be 60 cent that so it has to be virtually on the on the footprint of what we're already got um but my heart is saying I love the states in james's park I love to find a way and have been able to turn st james's park into um that suit and modern stadium um because st james's park there's something special about its location

39:00so close to city center and and I have I've had this conversation with a number of people when I've said when you know when we said if they move it up the lasers park and and people have said believe it or not that's no I four five hundred yards walk that you know that yeah and you're going well it's only it's only walking to the galley again from the galley again to the end you know it's just that again perhaps but maybe it's because we're we're so used to rolling out the area center rolling out the stack rolling out the strawberry yeah the three balls in that like sort of less than five minute walk and maximum to to get to your turn style and maybe it's where we're not prepared to shift from that you know and maybe it's well worried the memories are frightened of it um it's it's that betting man gamblers and it's Steve that I'm struggling with do I what do I want

40:02I want a new stadium I want I want the best facilities to match the to match what we've got um in the train of facilities I want a team that'll match the what we've got to play around and play with in terms of the stadiums and the you know the the training ground and everything we've given them I want us to be winners I want as many people as possible I want all the families who were struggling to get the kids into the games to be there and and you know you we talk very much about you know the history of the football won there with your dad go into the match and the number of kids who can't go with their dads because they kind of get a ticket and you think and is there a risk there we're going to lose that and these are all you know problems way way beyond my sort of remit to to talk about um or tap is in a in a way that would be sort of coherent um I'm stuck between I'm it's a rock in a hard place when it comes to stadium for

41:10me Steve I've said when we first talked about a new stadium I was yeah just planted on Lisa's park be fantastic and then you start the roll back and you think okay um if there's a problem how long will it take and yet all these other questions go around in your head and then I think right well states in jimzus park and then I'm thinking well what can you do I know for a fact that you can stick eight thousand on top of the the the the the gallery at end and then you've got a 60,000 seat to stadium what can you do with the east stand there's there's also what you can do with the east stand if you had an imagination but whether the planners would allow that imagination to run wild enough um to incorporate something really really special I've seen grounds in South America where what we've got in the east stand is literally just an entire wall of executive boxes I would hate that it's in jimzus park but the the footprint that we've got on the east stand

42:12um is would would require some immense design work I think and it's damn sure it's not beyond the weight of architects to come up with something special um and if they could and if they could give us that 75 seat there stadium by regenerating um since jimzus park I'd be all for that Steve if the truth be known um if somebody turned around tomorrow and said it can be done wait and do it um my my response would be go for it don't go for a new stadium go for doing what you can't the same jimzus park to make it absolutely you know the dogs please when it comes to you know what your castle fans want deserve um and what will bring us into you know being a a top top class football club for the next or within you know for the next so the 40-50 years

43:15um till the next change is needed um so is there an architect out there Steve and a designer who can come up with something that would satisfy me staying at Saint jimzus park I suppose in the next 80 months to two years we might find out okay we've had a few captains already this season Steve who would be your captain if we had a fully fit squad oh the fully fit squad um well Dan Boone sitting there is captain at the moment but his Dan Boone got in that two years we've legs in him I don't know in it in the modern game you can go on there are there are a number of sort of 36 rule defenders but they will get caught out eventually um Dan at the moment if he's got the captain's on band and great but I think I think you're looking at someone like Malik

44:17Malik Chow to to take that responsibility on um I would probably look in that direction Steve um I'd also look at Lewis Lewis Hall um a lad who absolutely loves the football club um has rightfully been brought back into the England fold he shouldn't have not been in that squad for the World Cup he should have been there he he was that he should have been commanding that left back spot ahead of the likes of Jed Spenson various other people who slotded in absolutely ridiculous decision by the manager not to take him um and I think the very fact that he's saying the five-year contract and the way that he wears he saw it honestly when he runs around in black way should um says an awful lot for the man and even though he's a young in years I think that there's a maturity of head on him um that would make him a very very good captain um I'd probably put him ahead of

45:24at the moment ahead of Lewis Miley who I think has the potential to be a captain but I think that at the moment Lewis needs to concentrate on his own game without having that added responsibility and I think it doesn't help Lewis when he's now being touted as a right back because people ask are looking and seeing one or two midfielders who are putting in probably better performance assistant than him um so all of a sudden it's like oh he's not as good as those two so you're you're right back now and it's like that's unfair yes he's had a he's had a difficult start the season but I thought that whenever he's played right back he has been outstanding and he may us who knows cement that that right back place um but he's got competition for the place and so I think I think Lewis needs to concentrate on his own game before we start trying to tag him with with the captain's on band Steve and I suppose the only other one probably would be

46:25it would be Nico but again it's early days for him um he's uh he's come with a reputation a good reputation and I think we'd rather just see performances from him that that match the expectation rather than putting the added weight of a the captain's on band on him I think when he got someone like that who's only just come to the football club I think it's it's unfair to to then throw some in as a captain when he hasn't been a captain for any other club either by the way um I think Malik like I say that said at the start would be probably my my choice um because he's reliable and he's probably the first statement name on the team sheet along with Lewis at the moment so uh that would that would be captain material I would never put a goalkeeper down his captain uh no disrespect to any goalkeepers out there but they're I think

48:32to keep them at the club for five years or is it to cash in handsomely in a future window oh what a good question I think in Lewis Mike Lewis has mined it'll be to time down five years and I think you'd be delighted with that um because I think he's a sort of player that just wants to concentrate on his game um he's a confident lad um and no he's got the ability he knows he's got the ability and he knows that that he had a value and I think he's quite possibly held out and even possibly convinced um certain members of the high rock yet incarcerated that he deserves a five year contract and a handsome one at that um you know I have heard whispers that the contract that he's got um more than um more than he's more than happy with because it's I wouldn't say it's

49:35competitive with but I think it's um beyond what some other um members of squad have been offered in recent times when contracts have been discussed um so I think you'd be pleased with that because I think he's he's now seized that the club had Mary's worth of Mary's value as a footballer not necessarily as a player at the cell I'm and said that um you and I have both heard whispers that after what we've seen in the last close season the following close season could well be a season where another two established players need to be moved on to bring in funds and I begin to wonder whether when we hear stuff like that is this becoming the norm the policy of the football club to move players on of value and cash in um as part of their growth strategy

50:39and it could well be that because you've got that sort of that lack of European football this season which is an expense of loss for an accionated because I think everything was geared towards being in Europe again um I don't think we can afford to be a yoyo club um we will probably more than likely be in that in that scenario that certain people in the football club are probably getting attuned to um I don't like it personally um player trading is it's something you do with a set of trading cards not but you know not the real player um I always want loyalty from players and I want I want continuity and I want players I want to see players getting better in a black wide not moving on and progressing and becoming better footballers with other football club Steve

51:40um maybe maybe as I'm short-sighted in that respect or perhaps it's because as I get older um I'm losing the patience and I'm becoming more sort of pushy towards I want us to win something and I want it win it now we've already won one competition and I'm going to be George as greedy little duck and I want to see more you know before my days I nobody's got the syndrome as park you know I don't want to hear a 10-year plan you know a 20-year plan or anything like that even a five-year plan is too long for me and my concentration levels is I'm getting older um so is Lewis tied down I think he's tied down as in five years in his mind to be five years in a black wide shirt because he will be pushing in the next two seasons um like he has done in in the last two seasons for more success for Nick Assynated

52:44whether or not the high rock you at the football club and the high rock you at the football clubs see it a different way and just seeing it as an extra 30 or 40 million put on on his price tag then who knows um I hope we're true to our word and you know when we tie someone down to five years we'll mean it and and I'd like to think after two successful years Lewis may get another two years or another three years on top of that as well Steve let's hope so uh thoughts on a longer and wiser this season Steve and does Joe Willac have a future and Nick Assynated now oh two good questions that suppose if you want to talk about a longer and wiser this season you really have to go back to last season and you have to you have to say well you know came with big reputations and and and didn't serve the the meal that we expected um didn't produce the goods

53:50but very very disappointing uh wiser after spending the entire close season um sometimes training on his own sometimes not training stories have been on strike whether or not that was just press talk a what we'll never know the player himself said that it was a load of rubbish um but what we do know is that he came in he cast a very very unfit um and then immediately got an injury and I think that tells you a lot um you know if if we're hearing that players and fit hasn't gone through a proper close season or pre-season training and then immediately get a nasty injury like you did um you've got a you've got a question whether that was you know that was the reason um and then we never saw anything of them for the basically the rest of the season and I thought Alyssa Alyssa a Langa if a Langa had of scored in that first game um was it in the friendly Steve um where he went through was it was it

54:55was it up at Selic yes I think it was yeah yeah wasn't it yeah it was any it was clean through when he knocked the ball and and everybody was going what a great goal and then it didn't hit the button and that and from that moment on my confidence just seemed to drain on him and whether or not also it it it weighed very very heavy or whether there was some kind of school and on and he's any person life will never have I know but the player seemed to go completely into his shell and he seemed to have three quarters of season where no matter what he tried it didn't come off and we were all sitting there going what this is a totally different footballer than the one you know that would that we imagined it were getting the one that would see it not in forest and and certainly didn't look worthy of the price tag and then though in the world the two of them go to the World Cup and into two totally different ways they allied up the World Cup

55:59and I mean with I led up the World Cup Forest Country with ghouls and the performances and an attitude that belied what we'd witnessed in the previous season when he came back and he seems to have brought it with him into the start of this season Steve and the five games that were played he looks a totally different footballer he's moving around the pitch better he's playing a different game he's playing a lot deeper at times and his interplay has been decent and his attitude seems to be first class he seems to be playing with a smile on his face and he seems to be enjoying his football and whether or not that's because you know the World Cup rejuvenated him and and and and brought back the side of the of your handless ad that he knew was there but you know the rest of us will begin to doubt and who knows and a Langa a Langa didn't

57:02a different way but just as exciting he did it coming off the bench and where he seemed to have the freedom of that right wing ready was paying for Sweden and now let's let's think about what's it was it because when he came on the opposition were tearing and it gave him you know just that extra yard of pay city hard or that extra vision or that ability to just turn him on and to put a great ball in or have a great shot and you know be able to find the back of the net and the man I did that was very much like he did in the in the games of Barcelona when when he scored those two goals I mean first play out the score two goals in a European tie it if Barcelona if I got those how long if not ever and I can't remember whether it was the first one in 30 years or the first one that had ever done it but certainly whatever it was he did it and he seemed to take that form into the World Cup and at the start this season we we got something of that as well

58:02so we began to think the last back like we said the lad is back with some people said it was because we some of the signers were made were competitive signers of players that were going to be in his position and whether people said it was because of the new manager you know all sorts of of reasons and rational all that have been been laid at his door but just unfortunate that he's now out injured we don't know what the injury is but I think we can we looked the other day and you know when that when when the announce we came and he was injured he wasn't wasn't playing you could tell what he meant to be castenate by the disappointment that sort of milled around the the fan base you know on social media and you know at the game you know people go oh god elangas injured you know we could we needed him you know yeah we did we needed a fit in the fast and a dynamic um Anthony elangas the one that we thought we that would come back from the World Cup

59:07and we're starting to to perform so from his perspective it's going to be disappointing the both the both bring in a brand of football that perhaps fits fits in with the with the mindset of the manager as well the way that he wants the game to play it wouldn't you know I've seen Wes have dropped him back into into that number 10 position and play in a little bit deeper and it seems to be working for him if we need to take penalties those Steve that's all I can say about that one and willick well just just seemed rejuvenated from a player who was going to be leaving almost certainly leaving in January according uh members of emergency stress and certain certain groups of fans who was then also going to be leaving in July you know start the transfer window he was he was gone links all the way through the summer that never materialised with clubs in Turkey and he's came back we've start the season and he's putting in performance

1:00:14that were very much like the dual willick under Steve Bruce believe it or not and where he seems to have gained legs again and seems to be able to run forever and moves around the pitch in a almost probably so gracefully at times you know when he gets mortering and the balls at least at least feet there's not a bit of sight sometimes it's in Jim's park certainly in a black and white shirt or a dark blue for if we're playing away and in watching them move any any does have that ability to be able to put the ball in the back of the net that seems to have come back a little bit you know some of the shots he's had some of the some the link up play um he seems to be back on form whether or not that's he's been carrying injuries for a long time or whatever we'll never know and we're reading his autobiography in 10 years time Steve but uh you look at all three of them

1:01:16and you think you know we're better with them than we are without them at the moment and they've all got experience in the Premier League and if we go back to one of our earliest questions the lads that were brought in lack that Premier League experience and I think no matter what you say there's no doubt that experience in the Premier League counts for an awful lot if you've got those games on the air belt and you know exactly what you're going into when you're facing a full of or a crystal palace or a lads united or a man united or a Liverpool or an Arsenal or a city and so on so on and and if you've if you've been there you've done it and you've got the t-shirt I think that um that's a big plus against someone who's come in fresh um and and has never ever experienced what it's like certainly at a wear games um or in the Red Hawk Cauldron of St James' Park where let's face it's some for some players one mispace place pass can cost you an awful lot

1:03:30yeah yeah okay if you could change one thing at Nicasla United on or off the pitch what would it be Steve oh that's a difficult one now that is difficult um I think that if I could change the mindset that seems to exist behind the scenes that you've calculated in various quarters if I could get them to be more people orientated about you get them to understand that you know just having a box up with the toe open once a week is not really good enough um little things like that if you know the mindset within some of the some of the areas like you know for a fact that

1:04:32you're going to have an influx of fans at half time who want refreshments and there's only 15 minute window and I know it's difficult but you seem to have this sometimes this inability to even have enough hot food ready and you know I mean the number of times that I've stood in the queue when being told there'll be ready in four minutes there'll be ready in five minutes we've just ran out of fries you know oh no we've got none of that we've got none of that been you think and is this the fault of the club is it fault the K-Rin is it is it a big emelaise there was an example I'll give you an example the yesterday of something that really really got on my nerves um George arrived at the match early and um in the town and he decided he was going to go into the ground early but it was it was caught past caught past 20 past one and um we asked the fire officer who was standing near the the lifts um at the Gallagher End if the lift was working and it was open yeah yeah the lifts open made no problems just get yourself in

1:05:36we opened the door to find the three people who man the lifts sit there and they looked at us and went no they're not open it doesn't open I'll have us one come back and have us one if I'm thinking did none of you have I talked with you left you're not communicate meanwhile suddenly troops along or a little group of three of them in different coloured outfits from the club and they're there to help you and to give you advice and you're looking at them and they're going were you aware that the lifts don't know how far from and that is looking at is it like is you've asked them what was it like the last time they were on the moon you know it's is that no it's somebody said to me when I was expiring it to them they said is there no proper briefing does nobody at the club take responsibility for making sure that the security people are briefed properly that the the people with various jobs and everybody should know what everybody

1:06:37else's role and responsibility is when it comes to that briefing you know and everybody should be on the same wavelength and I think that sometimes just those little things let the club down it's a lack of professional it's it's it's sometimes comes over even as that middle tier of management that make a presumption that everything is working well everything's rosy in the garden because nothing has shit on my lawn yet not realizing that there's weeds everywhere you know it's there's not a plant grown anywhere you know it's all withered and died and you've got the grown well but there's no shit on the lawn so I'm doing all right it's that time of middle management sort of mentality that that I think exists still and I always we've said it time time again it's a throwback to to the make Ashley Era and where you know it was a

1:07:39CSI what's it CSI say not do as I do I was a vice vice I can't remember which but you know exactly what I'm where I'm coming CSI say don't do as I do yeah that's that the one that's the one and I think there's I think there's a mindset of like well it's not my fault it's not my responsibility well if you're in that level tier of you know you have to take responsibility somebody who looks after those two heads should be responsible for ensuring that they all know when various things happen in it's it's there's also the added problem that we've subtly seen we've gone and employed outside Stewarden companies and it's never the same people twice at a desk or a door I got it was the situation yesterday on a when in the ground steel and I found quite amusing and you get to the you get the entrance and there's two people with show-sec outfits on and they're going can I say your ticket and you go why I'm not even in the ground yet what do you what do you

1:08:44need to see my ticket for just to make sure you go in the right place well I know I'm going the right place so they want to see the ticket you then go upstairs and that's when you you zap the ticket you know and you're in and actually turn round and the lad at the top and I said to him why do those two lads ask to see what tickets they just show up he's here he goes I haven't a clue he says and I don't think they do like that he says but somebody's obviously said to them make sure you say people's tickets before they come in and so that's their job to stand there the hold the door they do absolutely nothing else the queue people queue themselves in our open steps and in you don't need end they're not managing the queue or anything like that they just start the door and they're just going and I see your ticket it's interesting because it's interesting because in the platinum club Steve they had guys on the door previously well previously didn't have guys on the door downstairs so that meant that anyone who wanted to try their look at getting into the ground for free could just wall-syn here or and then when it was bedlam before the game people were

1:09:52getting passed and we had this we had people getting in for free so then the put these two guys on the door downstairs now at the platinum club they do check the tickets and the guys we've got this season are a hell of a lot better than the guys who had last season and what I've found is a lot of people and this was particular with Cooky him's is people don't read the email at the gethram the club so you were getting a lot of people who were coming upstairs who actually go to the box office to pick up a ticket but they didn't they came straight in expected they'd be able to use their season ticket on their phone to get in when they did do that it was going red and then then they were getting sent back or people you know people just weren't following the instructions so I think that's where it stemmed from and you know now I've heard from guys you know who go to

1:10:52the club they've been sending mystery shoppers in to make sure that the lads had to win their job upstairs and making sure that everyone buzzes in because if they don't then they want to know why because then obviously that means that somebody might be getting in and going sitting in somebody else's chair it's ridiculous like all would do all want to do is go to the match but I get where you're coming from Steve so yeah it's crazy but that's it's interesting because some of that has been brought on by the club itself because sometimes you get a cup ticket and it's put on your season ticket and sometimes you're a separate cup ticket and I mean somebody told me that that was more to do with the the competition than it was to do with the the system but nobody's ever explained that it was it was somebody who was one of the students that explained it to me it for example he said by the UEFA games you have to have a separate ticket yeah but for the league cup game it was placed on your season ticket and so of course that causes confusion for some people

1:11:58because some people are you know like last season for example when they turned up with an FA cup or a league cup game they're expecting or for even for the UEFA game they're expecting to just show that season ticket the wonder where that was another ticket being dropped in the wallet and so that it was never really communicated in the right way if you like just explaining that you know for a European game it has to be this and for other cup matches it's done like that and that's all that you have to say and then people would understand but not even tell anything and just putting out for this game it's going to be it's going to be in your wallet for this game just use your season ticket you know and you know some people are not switched on enough to understand that there's you know they just well if I use the season ticket last game it's going to be exact the same this game no it's a different competition so it's different rules and all sorts and and so it goes on you know but yeah it it but you know getting into the ground I can understand if if that is a major issue

1:13:04then fine but there are people when those two lads are standing about the stairs nothing to see you tickets have heard people say no and then just and then they don't know what to do then it bloaks at the top of the stairs with handheld scanners that you cannot get passed and then there are two or three standing behind at the door watching and then they give you the little on-band or the wristband or whatever you know so it that'd be funny but it's physically impossible almost physically impossible they get through the the the the network of officials to ads in the nice suits in the 80 92 amiable as they are they're very efficient and they're the good guys as well by the way and because they always do what they smile on their face and they're very helpful you know when people's phones on ping and properly you know that there's always one of them there to say well got to turn it around the other way you've got to put it at the top of that

1:14:06they also have the scanners the handheld scanners that can do when the queue gets a little bit big and you know when the people are standing because the other problem is where I go yeah the stand on the stairs to get in so you know that's helped the safety problem to begin with you know of its own code so the handheld scanner helps to move the crowd on that much quicker it's little things like that I would like to see you know Hopkinson perhaps get a grip so in various aspects I know it's also in the club shot yesterday there's there's actually somebody and I've never ever come across it and maybe it's because I don't normally go into club shot before a game but I was in town earlier and there's a lad stand there and he's greeting you at the door and he goes to what a program I thought was for free and I love a program and he produces the handheld scanner because I'm not paying for it right I've got a couple of questions left

1:15:07steve as the other I thought he might has been the the longest in answering these questions but this this more than makes up for not having an amigo is on the Friday so let's get on to the next question steve it is and now that your season is kicked off and he castly united can you see us winning a cup perhaps getting in Europe or should we be prepared for a few more bumps in the road like we had it lead to united and I almost certainly think there's going to be a few more bumps in the road steve but you know what we seem to have a manager that through adversity can still come up with results you know one defeat and leave so far you know playing vertical football they will call it and playing I think what we're actually playing is we're playing versatile football not necessarily vertical football I think there's an edge about them I think the way that he's the way that he's galvanized the squad a very very young squad so early in

1:16:11the season and they're certainly holding their own and nothing would surprise me the league cup the problem with the league cup is it it all boils down to the look of the draw doesn't it yeah in you know home draws you would always go definitely a big chance but getting in a way draw it even although in theory it should be a winnable game it's just that it's just that extra little extra little nut in the packet isn't it you know that you think oh this could be this could be this could be a difficult one you know but we and I think that's more more because we're playing a Premier League team than they're actually looking at the opposition it's not like we know that they're riddled with injuries or you know we're concentrating on their results and and analysing their performances and then that's putting the fear of God in it was there anything like that I think it's just very much because you're playing a Premier League team so early in the

1:17:11in the competition and we could well go we could we could well break the mold and and get in Europe and the reason I say that is because I'm looking at some of the some the results that we've seen so far this season Steve you know teams I know it's early days and you know but you so are brightened to to Arsenal you so you know what happened um with Chelsea you know getting hammered three nil Chelsea with a team that I thought because the weren't in Europe were the team that could do really really well in the league but then I've watched some of their games as some of their performances and they've been rugby and Liverpool haven't gone off to the best of starts not the sort of starts that I suppose the cop would would be after and it's I think this is going to be one of those strange strange seasons where it's going to be you know it's going to be someone's going to break
