Bruce on the topic of North Carolina I'm in North Carolina grad the Bellicic tenure has been largely a disappointment that's been marked by scandal more recently what would you say the percentage chance is that that he's North Carolina's coach this time next year 40% for my liking yeah you know I think there's a better chance he's not back right like as you know being a North Carolina guy like when Mac Brown was there in the second time they were not great but they were not terrible they were terrible last year and because of the people Bill Bellicic put in place most notably his right hand guy Michael Embardi as the GM the highest paid GM in college football they became a laughing stock right and even when they won two games you know back when Larry Fedoro was there it was like it didn't feel the same way just because now

5:07listen you're taking the greatest coach in the history of the NFL never been in college you're sticking him in there at 70 something you just had a lot of drama and it feels now like they're much more confident operation obviously that a nice one over TCU and Ireland you know they let one get away last week at Clemson but it feels like they're like you know wouldn't if you told me they went six and six and went to a bowl game I'd be like that that doesn't surprise me but again you're North Carolina you're paying him twice as much as you paid Mac Brown for lesser results and then you have to keep in mind you know in this investigation you know whatever happened in the personnel department that they looked into not just with Lambardi with people that Lambardi brought in you know Bill Bellicic's on the responsible for those decisions whether he knew what was going on or should have known what was going on let's continue down that path I like this percentage chance percentage chance Mike Norvell is back at Florida State next year 12 I love that you're

6:10giving yes fantastic 12% on Norvell huh yeah and that's optimistic I mean if you watch them play you know there'll be some decent things in there but it's like it's Florida State we're pretty far down the road with Mike Norvell the only reason why I would say it's as high as it is and again it's not even in the teens is it's a lot of money and you know Florida State isn't Texas A&M where they have oil you know billionaires you know tripping over themselves around yeah you know it's still Florida State and he's you know he's not a terrible coach it wasn't that long ago where like Alabama was looking at him and Kalen De Boer as the guys they were considering to think they could he could be the guy to replace Nick Sabin but it's just kind of falling apart doesn't feel like there's much alignment doesn't feel like there's much buy-in they do have some talent in spots but man they look really bad on defense and it just feels like it's regressing and they're staring at

7:10that you know a three and four possibly two and five start you know in a by-week coming off of Miami maybe they hit the reset button and go all right what's our plan B to get us kind of back as as you guys know like it's different than when Jimbo was rolling yeah somebody you know who's connected to Florida State had told pointed out a couple of you know weeks ago he was like when they had it going out golden was the head coach at Miami Jimbo could get whatever he wanted out of at a South Florida now you got a you know recruiting maniac who's in at Miami and by the way John Somerall is at Florida and he's way more competent and like it feels like they're on the right tracks so now all of a sudden you're third yeah you're not first right and that's you know to have a coach on the hot seat for that long all right what's the exit strategy and where you going with it was that recruiting psycho micro Ryan he's not gonna answer he's just gonna smile

8:12wait but my I don't know who you're talking about Miami is working the portal better than any any program in the country is that fair is it fair to say that yes yeah the men's a thing and then you're Cooper Barcai and just the other thing that they're doing is some teams are really good in the portal and and some teams are pretty good at the high school recruiting you know crystal ball in the Miami operation are a plus on both of those yes right you're seeing the offensive line you're seeing the guys in the trenches I don't want to just say they just see offensive lineman because it's defensive guys but then you're seeing like you know like Malik Itoni's found gold you know I I don't know why he was only a three star right but you know you bring him him in and he's a tone-setter and then you see other parts of the of on the roster where they have some of those guys and I think that's the part where okay I don't know why it took this long for Miami to get this up to speed with it but it's like as far as Miami goes they they seem to have like the

9:13ideal coach I don't want to say the perfect coach but the ideal coach for this NIL era because it's really hard because of the all the shuffling that goes on with rosters to get continuity and the trenches especially on the O-line well you got a guy who's who's elite at evaluating O-line and he's got such a relationship with his O-line guy that they're able to really put it together it doesn't guarantee that they're going to win national championships now but it definitely gives them a way better chance to be in the discussion and if you're in the discussion and in that then all of a sudden I feel like it breeds into something because you know again you guys know this well being down there like all of a sudden you know in part of it is Malach Itoni a big part of it but I think Miami became very cool in the last I don't know you know 12 months yes maybe not even 12 months and I think now all of a sudden it doesn't take that much for you to like that like that fuse and it's definitely lit now. 10:13not getting fooled by reports fake reports on the internet did I get fooled by a report by you that Jimbo Fisher really wants the FSU job and FSU brass is looking into it. I think that Jimbo Fisher has definite interest that's what I'm told and on the Florida State side I don't know what Florida State is going to do financially when they start kicking the tires on okay let's say and this is a guy you guys know well and I know well too and he's a good coach and he has ties to Florida State and that's Mani Diaz. Mani Diaz doing a really good job at Duke. Very good. If you want if you if you decide Mani Diaz is your best option you know how much is that going to cost you to get rid of Norvell at 50 million get you know and then all of a sudden you know if Mani has some buy out and bring him in and go forward and then all of a sudden you have to factor in you know clearly they were not you know from what I'm told they were closer to USF than UM or UF when it came to their portal spending this past off season so what is the economics of that and I think

11:17the part that I would imagine is going to be tough for them is on Jimbo can people can he talk his way into the job right right and he do that where it's like okay on some sense financially it makes sense but does it really make sense to say because we've seen we've seen some version of this where it's whether Bobby Patrino comes back to Louisville and it worked for a little while until it didn't or you know Macaron wasn't a disaster at North Carolina you know Rich Rod is you know Rich Rod to me is a little different than some of these other guys you know but because Rich Rod what he's doing at West Virginia now let's you know he's off to a good start this year doesn't mean he's going to go you know ten and two but I think that there's some of that where you can see a little bit of momentum I don't know how you know I think it's a tough sell on fans but you if you're a Florida state you look and go okay maybe we can bring in Glenn Schumann who's an unprovened head coach but has done a good job as Kirby's defense coordinator you know again I don't know if

12:20you can sell them on hey Kenny Dillingham's gonna come down here you also don't know what jobs are coming open that are competing with you that's you know last year a lot of jobs came open this year we'll see can you imagine them ever going after Deon Sanders oh not at this stage unless Deon had it going where like it you know remember they just lost like 42 to seven towards Western and the the part that's a tough sell with Deon even if Deon's healthier this year than he was last year coming off of you know all his physical ailments and is he's not going to be the one doing the home visits and the and the recruiting and that's the part where it's like I don't know if if you can you can bank on a guy no matter how strong his ties are to the school because again just keep in mind who are the two big coaches are going up against right now yeah crystal ball and some raw and they're what you better be all on it on recruiting and I just think that's a tough tough sell that you're gonna skip from Deon I didn't mean for this to turn

13:24into what percentage of an ACC coach would be back I got to throw one more out at you dabbo swinny oh good one yes excellent I'm gonna say like 85 percent the numbers really high because they don't have a lot of money to throw around and everything I've heard is like dabbo no offset in his deal you know he has one national titles as we all know so you know I think it could be the it could be the you know slow leaning into the warm bath and you're gonna ride it out with him right you know like this is what you got and I think they could try to convince him go hey we got to change up some things we're doing in terms of staffing and maybe how we approach NIL and how we approach the portal because this is not working in this era especially if they go five and seven and miss a bowl and take another step back right it's one thing when you're like oh they're still they're not winning national titles but they're still you know a ten win team and they did

14:24make the playoff you know two years ago but it's now it just feels like that gap is falling they massively underachieved last year and I think the writing is on the wall but that's the problem when you spend a fortune on a head coach's salary and you can't get out from under it I think their best hope is that dabbo looks around goes eh I don't want to really do this anymore and I don't know what he wants to do then but you know that's that's what they're on the hook for how do you feel about Florida's chances quickly here against them Mississippi this weekend at least they haven't at home you know yeah and they haven't come off a huge emotional game I actually like like the gators really good d-line I feel like jaden bought by the end of the weekend won't be the most underrated offensive player in college football but right now I think he is I mean he is a monster who fits with exactly what somrar wants they're well coached I think if there's a chance if there's a time to get Ole Miss it is this week and I think I'm sure the swamp will be wild I would I'm picking

15:26I'm picking the gators well Bruce as a journalist and a best-selling author is comario Taylor at Mississippi State the best story in college football right now where he's doing it for his hometown team right down the road yeah I think so I mean it's hard to find the right comp you know like because they were really bad the last couple of years and all of a sudden now again they beat Minnesota on the road it's a nice one they beat South Carolina nice when it's not like they went into to baton russian and took them down or beat Georgia but he is a spectacular player I think what's worth noting is Mississippi State is an SEC school that you know they can they can throw some money around and I think if you're looking at comario Taylor is potential first pick of the draft in 2028 if you're I know Mississippi State can afford to pay them now even if even if other people are you know what I'm saying oh you know Nichols maybe not the guy next year we can throw a lot of money at this guy or whatever I think Mississippi State because of his ties to the school because

29:14yes you know we all have the answers they play three games so we know i don't know why they play anymore games because this is what's gonna happen so we got that but yeah it was um very surprising and uh i i would say of course the running backs and the coaching by Atlanta and everything and and of course the quarterback wow finally yes we got the michael pennics play a game yes and even there early in the game i'm like oh come on man let it go and all of a sudden he threw a couple passes and i went now where he's in and he threw the ball once he kind of got the feel i'm gonna say it maybe late first quite i can't remember exactly when it was but he just he was really accurate he throws it even though he can throw it hard it's easy to catch because it's always a damn beautiful spiral yes with with some ump behind it so that makes it even easier for the receivers you ask a receiver do you want the ball smooth or you want me to just rip it in there to you and i'm

30:18never not said that to one receiver who said well we want no they always say yeah get that damn thing to me as fast as you can right uh fill how important yeah he's doing it how important is that because you played quarterback obviously at the highest of levels uh you've won two super balls how important is completing a couple of early passes especially for a young quarterback in terms of confidence throughout the game because i remember you playing Denver in that super ball and you completed i think like your first six or seven passes and i saw the confidence building in you as the game went on so how important is that well it's of course it's very important and you know sometimes it's gonna no matter who you are it's gonna start out you know be one for five you just got to be tough enough and all that to still fight through it and be who you are it's kind of like a basketball player right you know no matter who it is they shoot miss the first three shots are gone damn i need a layup yes and sometimes same with the quarterback when in doubt you're calling the plays over there and whichever team you're talking about doesn't matter and you can see

31:22whatever with the quarterback it's pretty easy to see throw a couple screens throw some short passes and you know for a quarterback that's as good as throwing a 50 yards down the field now you're in the rhythm you feel confident and you think better too no doubt about it uh listen you're an all-time New York giant i know you still love the New York Giants uh put us there when Jackson Dark goes down what is Phil Sims thinking what is he saying man i i i shouldn't be such a fan yes of the time i don't know because i you get wrapped up in it um seeing him play last year Jackson dark man i just thought this could be the year you know really deep down i kind of thought you know he if they kind of hang in there a few games and one a few things he he's the kind of guy that could be in the world of is he the MVP well the Giants he probably most likely would have been but man i don't know it was i walked down the room when it happened really and turned out to be about exactly what i thought it would when i when i saw the hit and i went man that was in a tough spot and uh

32:28we'll see where it goes from there but very very disappointed i'm really i don't know but you guys i haven't heard i keep looking and i don't want to call somebody from the Giants but what quarterback are they looking to get and this would i would say this to any roster any coach right now is your third quarterback good enough to win a game for you because that's what you need and they go well no we like our starter in a backup okay you start who gets hurt now who's your backup you know so right it's it's every the league the quarterbacks getting hurt pack her when said this years ago we used to talk about it at CBS in the mornings on sunday and he would just go i don't understand why teams don't have four quarterbacks right square on their team and i have said it a thousand times not that anybody listens to me but you can train those four quarterbacks you can kind of get them ready so when the starter if he does get unfortunate gets nicked or hurt then you don't worry

33:28so much about the backup which most of these teams now starter gets hurt and they're like oh my god we got to play the backup we you know so right yes i look i don't get it i really don't know Phil it's a great way to get out there take advantage of it right no Phil it's such a great point and no one has more experience with this than you because you went down your second superbowl you went down that you you having an MVP season you went down that year were you worried when Jeff Haustetler came in no because he knew he was going to take care of it for you right well yeah you know situations like that when you're 10 and oh and you're playing and you think man we're pretty good we can that team was so different from the one in 86 second one yes because what's about it was just bludgeoning people to death you're right i mean even when it was like run it run it there's a passage wide open and we just we just we played some of the most boring games you could ever have in that year yes early in the because we were running eat the clock up

34:33we're playing Dan merino of the high flying dolphins and coach parcells is just he's you could see and he goes you know sims we got to do this so we ran the ball and i think we held it for like 16 plays in our opening drive killed half of the first quarter yep and i'm walking out damn merino i think goes three and out i'm walking back out in the field and parcells go say sims and i know what he's going to say now i said yeah what he takes his finger and he shoots his wristwatch i said yeah i know i'm going to milk the clock i got it we got to do what we got to do to keep damn merino off the field he wanted his quarterback on the field go ahead Mikey Phil is there enough talent in the NFL for every team to have three quarterbacks where you feel like the third one can win you a game that's a good question oh yeah i think there is and if they can't win you the game then you're a bad judgment of talent and maybe at your offense it stinks and that's why they're not doing better i don't know so there's a little bit of that and uh i think in the NFL but yeah there's enough i mean hey look there could be i'm not saying there's going to be

35:39five first round this this year i think that quarterback class is going to back up a little as we go but there there's probably 15 to 20 quarterbacks playing in college right now that have NFL talent and it's going to keep coming is much or more in the future because everybody wants to be a quarterback and i teach quarterbacks during the offseason and some days you can be over there well there's a field close to me where we throw and you there could be 15 quarterbacks and you know most number young and early in high school or whatever in high school and you go damn this kid if he kind of keeps going forward and has a good he could be a pro i mean there's so many kids that can really throw and are really into it because it's the position everybody wants to play you know Phil i thought the giants were fine at the backup quarterback position i would say if you ranked them the backups before the season started james would be top five for everyone but he was so disappointing against the Rams that was tough to see it was tough to watch well you know i think he'll redeem

36:41himself here you know james has had great success at times in the NFL and you know he was really good in practice and scrimmages and preseason games this year right so he got listen you're talking about it's almost like back when i was playing let's say in 1985 and i'm the backup quarterback some I get hurt and go i got to go in and play against him shakago bears that he wins and that's kind of what happened to james yeah the Rams when he came in they emptied the bucket they started playing i'm sure the giants thought that the Rams would play them like they played the 49ers and they didn't they used those corners they played a lot of man-to-man they were extremely aggressive and that's probably the worst thing that could have happened to james i'll be i'll be really surprised guys if he doesn't redeem himself and his personality his talent you know he's i've you ever been around him he's a big damn dude no i haven't no but we love him yes this show love james and and he

37:44and he can really still throw the ball you know i'd watch that so much during training camp but everything i i would have james you're right he would have been a top five backup the NFL after what i saw in the preseason fill john harbaugh is a head coach who's intentional with everything he says so when he says that dart is out for the regular season it's him implying that he could be back in time for the post season but if the giants make it to the post season it feels like you can't go back to dart if that quarterback your backup quarterback got you to the postseason what what would you do there oh that's a good question oh yeah i think it's just something you say he's you know i i can't imagine being a head coach and losing the quarterback who you really were surprised about his talent how good it is and he's great to work with but yes i'll just say this if they make it to the playoffs jackson dart will not be the starter of that football team unless he's practicing and you know maybe they give him if it works where he's back on the field for three four weeks of practice

41:57Phil i feel like that's the perfect lead into this question because through two weeks the chargers have been one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL and it's late two Justin Herbert being this polarizing quarterback you have one camp where everybody thinks he's overrated and the other that is just making it more excuses for him where are you kind of at with Justin Herbert this season well i ain't gonna make no excuses for him you know listen all you gotta do is watch the games you know it kind of tells you he's got a throat he's incredible passes to get the damn ball completed and taking hits and making some of these throws look i'm watching and i do liking i'll ask you this if you we rank the quarterbacks in other words where would you put him if you had the plane on your team and you know what the NFL would do he'd be picked a lot higher than all the fans and the media and everything has him right so they're in a tough spot i'm literally surprised by it because i thought with the new offense a coordinator that would change everything and make it easy on just easier on Justin Herbert so it's a long way to go we'll see they can fix it but man i
