We return again to Phyllis White, who has some more delightful information about the Phyllis Cove's radio booth. Phyllis? Rathbone and Bruce were making films and they had just one day off per week for the radio work. They received the scripts a couple of days early to look over if they had time and they would turn up at the studio for the day after noon of broadcast day. And the first reading would be rather slow and broken up as there was discussion and maybe a few changes. Then there would be a reading for timing to fit to the exact number of minutes available.

It was more likely to be too long and too short. The Edna would flip over a few pages and knock out a couple of words here and a couple on another page and it would miraculously come out exactly to the minute. So they went through the rest of the afternoon, obviously, temple and pressure increased and the show sharpened up. At the end of the afternoon, they went on the air for the Eastern United States. Then there was a couple of hours break and everybody would go out to dinner and they would come back and do it all over again for the West Coast. I feel very thankful now that these live and ephemeral shows were captured on disk and that they could now reach a new audience. Now, please join Phyllis and I as we listen to The Iron Box. This episode from the Life of Sherlock Holmes will be transmitted to our men and women overseas by shortwave and to the worldwide facilities of the Armed Forces Radio Service.

That tree wine brings you... Basil, that bone and Nigel Bruce and the new adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The Patrick family, the family that took time to bring you good wine invite you to listen to Dr. Watson and tell us another exciting adventure he shared with his old friend at Master Detective Sherlock Holmes. Well, this is the New Year's Eve and I wish you could be here with us this evening so we could toast each other with a glass of Patrick, California, for. As you know, Port wine is long been a favorite wine for celebrating a happy occasion. That's because Port is a wine rich in tradition and you couldn't ask for a more delicious port than Patrick. Patrick's Port is a deep, glowing red color. Beautiful to look at and wonderful to taste with a hearty full flavor that's right from the heart of the grape. And when you serve Patrick Port your friends tonight or anytime.

Remember you can serve it proudly because the name Patrick is the proudest name in the history of a Mexican wine. And now I'm sure Dr. Watson's waiting for us so let's drop in and see. Good evening, Dr.. Good evening, Mr. Bartell. Draw up your usual tear. Thank you. That's it. Well, did you enjoy the Christmas holiday? Well, I've had a whale of a time, thank you. But I don't think I can face a turkey or a men's pie for at least another year. How about you, Dr.? Well, I had a very present week to my boy, Bockey's, visitors, and a fetching number of Christmas messages to be honest with him. I say you got a new pie. Is that a Christmas pie? You pipe, you tobacco pouch and a pound of my favorite tobacco. All of them sent to me from London by an old clowns and a friend of mine, the E.N. Dunbar. No, crying, huh? Well, do you mean he was one of your patients or was he someone that you and the great

Sherlock Holmes helped? The latter, Mr. Bartell, as a matter of fact, it was receiving this gift that reminded me of the story of the size of the tale you tonight. The story in which the E.N. Dunbar played a prominent five. And how did it begin? The day before New Year's Eve in 1899. Sherlock Holmes and I sat in opposite corners of a first-class railway carriage. We sped towards Edinburgh in the flying Scotland. What set you and Sherlock Holmes up there, Dr? It started over the hundredth anniversary of the Bartell. My old friends to Walter Dunbar, those Holmes and me to spend a few days with him at Dunbar Castle, about twenty miles outside Edinburgh. After we left King's Cross Station, Holmes hit sharp, either face-frame in his dear stopping cap, dipped into the bungalow press papers and he thought, within, we left Bedford far behind us before he thrust the last one of them under the sea, cleaned across and offered me his seat. Care for the gal watching? No, I think so. I'll stick to the pipe. Flying stunts living up to its name.

They're going splendidly. I'll fit in with 53 and a half miles an hour. Oh, I haven't noticed the autumn miles, though. No, have I? But they're not. The telegraph first on this night. The other path. The aid of a watch. The calculation is a simple one. What's my day of alone? We have several hours ahead of us. That's only more about Walter Dunbar. I have a feeling that he's in some kind trouble. If you're having one talk about it. Well, it's not exactly trouble, Holmes. There's a strange problem that confronts the Dunbar. There's a problem. It'll be settled at midnight tomorrow. Oh, he's here. He's here. I'm going to go to the next room. I'm going to go to the next room. I'm going to go to the next room. I'm going to go to the next room. I'm going to go to the next room. I'm going to go to the next room. It's not exactly trouble, Holmes. There's a strange problem that confronts the Dunbar. There's a problem. It'll be settled at midnight tomorrow. Oh, he's here. Night New Year's Eve, eh? He is. Exactly. But to really appreciate the story I have to begin by telling you the death of Olsert Thomas Dunbar. The father of the present time. Yes, he was severely wounded in Waterloo. Though he managed to last that long enough to get back to Dunbar Castle. The story goes that as he lay there on his deathbed, he killed his wife of his friend. Yes, I'm fine.

The grave last. I touched the baron of the tree home from Waterloo. I defy the door from the wound as well. Oh, I shall ask. I'm not afraid to die. I'll let the niggas near as I shall never see the child you bear. They say what was kept not coming yet. Eh, can he visit the deathbed of his own friend? Who's there? I think he was sending my back. My thoughts. It's me. Eh. I'm living an unborn son behind me on a day. No, I don't trust women or children or banks for that matter. But the best part of my wealth and gold and the big iron box you'll find under the bed. The money's there. I am something else for our any day. You have to keep that box in trust for me Sunday. You can count a double to my boy on the New Year's Eve before his twenty-first birthday. And he'll be a man and wise enough to know how to use it. You understand, tell me? All right, girls. But suppose your bear is a girl.

Girl, that'll be your boy. And we'll name him Walter F. to my good friend. So, welcome Scott. Interesting story, Watson. And that child, of course, is the gentleman we are going to see now. Walter Dundar. Exactly. And the first date on it was a friend of sub-order Scott by his son composed of urethra claydons. Why, sir? It's a family singular rich in literary friendship. And it's not very funny, huh? Continue, I suppose you can guess what happened. The Thomas Keft drew up a document for stress-bar. The New Year's Eve before the date on its twenty-first birthday. It's fall in Jeep country, and during the drive-in-of-false sales event, get a great deal on four-by-fours that refuse to be contained, like Jeep Wrangler. Confidence built into every drive with the most awarded SUV ever, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and freedom that can't be denied, with the open-air freedom in Jeep Gladiator.

After 85 years, it's no surprise that Jeep became America's SUV brand. Get a great deal during the Jeep Drive-in-of-false sales event. Jeep is one more awards over its lifetime than any other SUV brand. The Jeep Grille rich, St. Marks Vs.C.A.U.S.L.C. It's got Charles Born on services. It's 29. It's a leap year. Oh, so for us the world is waiting for his unbox for a go. He'll be 84 next year, yet legally, with only one birthday of four years, and he has the law. Thank you, ma'am. No, most of the situation. Though I'm afraid the world is fine, it's far from entertaining. The lawyers must have been extremely scrupulous, and abiding by the letter of the document. Here's old Fannie Birdock is dead now, of course. But he too has a great grandson, William Birdock, who still handles the Dunbar Estate. He'll be at the castle tonight to formally hand over the Iron Buck. I'm delighted to accept the holiday invitation, Sir Walter. My dear fellow, I've heated the rest, but it's always low to stick to one. This situation may pose a nice little problem for me.

Problem? Yes, I'm reasonably certain that the agents of Water Dunbar will get his Iron Buck's full of gold on this New Year's eve. But we will be able to love, we shall see. Dr. Watson, I'm glad to see you and Mr. Holmes here at the castle. Thank you, my boy. Holmes is the End Dunbar. Sir, what was his gun, sir? How did you do, Mrs. Andar? I'm very proud to meet you, Mr. Holmes. I've heard of those about you. A grandfather will be down in a few moments. Let's go into the library, tell her. I imagine the world is quite excited about that terminus, me. How would you be? If you'd waited 63 years too long for an incident. Thank the Lord, I have the force to be born on the pro-Zek, date of August 21st. You've had a grand time of death, you would be the next Dunnett, I'd take it. Yes, Mr. Holmes. You see, my father was killed two months ago at Mathematics.

Yes, I've had about it in the papers, my boy. I'm sorry. Thank you, Dr.. The ultimate box isn't going to be the only ceremony at midnight. Dorothy and I are announcing that engagement. Do you like it? A daughter is small. She and her father are staying here too. My congratulations. You are just indeed an indeed, man, too. Thank you. It's been quite a couple of times, though. He's a businessman and doesn't impress with titles. When they had the company via suitable income. But when we told him about the inheritance, he'd have lent it and gave his consent. Ah, he's Dorothy now. Dorothy Darling. I want you to meet two friends of mine. Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. How do you do? Now, have you done this well? I am idea from what this young man's been telling us. I gather the congratulations in order. Thank you. I finally persuaded father that he and would make a worthy son-in-law. For a while, I was afraid we'd have to look for Grant and Beans. They could cause a darn red cheese and lard that'd raise a parental rast. Just as they do in the store books. Oh, a sub-alteredo.

There you are. What's in the dear boy? Oh, are you? And this must be your friend Sherlock Holmes. How do you do about that? We're aware of a young nipper who'll be 21 at midnight. Oh, again, woman. May I introduce Mr. Herbert Smiley? I do, sir. I believe that we have congratulated you on the engagement of your daughter. That was the pose to remain a secret until midnight. Dunbar Boughts was finally open. Didn't make her out here, Herbert. The children are in love and have got her certain money on Ian. And it's New Year's Eve. That's answered into the spirit of the occasion. Pringled the glasses, Ian. I bet some bottles of my special pride, Puno. It's the finest port in Scotland. The cream of Dunbar. My father read the first bottle down the year before it was born. And the drink of the brew was surely warm the cockles he had. Oh, my mouth's watering already, so what is it? Oh, no. Where is this lawyer fellow gunman off any here? Oh, any moment, Herbert. As soon as he arrives, dinner, that will be ready for the evening ceremony. Are you bringing the famous iron box within some order?

The three doesn't, they won't get any dinner, Holmes. Ian past the glasses or own my boy. Ah, here you are, my boxer. Good evening, sir. Oh, you've got the box we are seeing. Now the purge is complete. Oh, let me introduce you. This small, her father Mr. Small, my grandson Ian, you know. The Sherlock Holmes. Doctor Watson. I saw you on late, sir, my train was delayed. Oh, that's all right, my daughter. You're here and you brought the box. That's all that matters. You are a young lawyer at length here, I'll help you for it. I must say that this is all exciting. Holmes, the famous iron box, when it's in head of goods of gold. Yes, and from the size of the box, the rough, yes. I could estimate its cubic content in gold at around 5,000 pounds. Not about some, perhaps, a business man like Mr. Small, but a windfall to an impucunious stock cutter. No, that's what you do. A strong young man, Mr. Möder. How do you mean strong, Holmes? A box that finds full of golden sovereigns, would weigh considerable amounts. And yet the lawyer carried it single-handed. I know that we're all assembled and going to proposito.

So it's still some who has all yet left the ring to the New Year. It means a lot to some others. So 19,000. 19,000. We can tell Smith, nothing just 1900s, the water. We should bring to the new century that's about to begin. Good idea, daughter. Oh, I'm afraid that wouldn't be quite appropriate, Miss Small. To be accurate, the previous century won't begin until January 1st, 1901. Not 1900. Of course. That's it. Dartey? I'm afraid you're waiting can't take place sometime, yes. Father, what are you talking about? I read an article in the other day that said just the same thing as you, Dr. Watson. And what's more, it said something even more important. It said that 1900 is not a reapier. Oh, rubbish. Leapier comes every four years. There was one in 1896, then obviously 1900 is one. I think Mr. Small may be right. What do you say Mr. Who's do you know? Well, I hope no one would bring up this boy. It's the actual problem I refer to on the thing, my dear, what is it?

Bosh! For heaven's sake, answer! Is 1900 a leapier or no? I'm afraid it's not so well, I know. Because of a slight imbalance that would otherwise and be produced in the calendar. Of the even century years and the first visible by 400 are leapiers. In other words, 1600 with a leapier, the year 2000 will be a leapier. But 1800 and 1900 are not leapiers. Then you have no birthday next year so I'm afraid I can't open the box tonight. And the done box won't get there in here tonight. And you right here don't marry for a few more years. I won't allow you to marry a spopper. Mr. Holmes, you sure of your fact? I'm very much afraid that I had to marry a man. Oh, this is terrible. I can't stand anymore. No, no, no, no, no, don't take it too badly to all the hair. Yes, think this. That's it after all. You only have to wait until four years. Another four years. At my age, young man. At my age, Colonel. I shall never live that long. Hey, what is it, Angus? Dinner is a third, sir.

Walter, you can have it as soon as you're ready, sir. Oh, you're a very miserable meal home. The world has gone to its room. The young lovers are million tears. Small and the lawyer merrily seem to be positively gloating. Yes, Mr. Holmes, you haven't been scared of me for a few years. But that's us at least. I think I'll go and have a talk with Sir Walter. And you might catch up. Find out if I'm trying to cheer up the young folks. And if you're experiencing this, it's really hard. Find out the troubles. It's quite no deal. I'll join you in the library. Call me if you want me. There you are, my dear. Hello, Doctor Walter. All alone in front of the fire. I'm afraid when I'm not in very good spirits. Oh, nevertheless, I'll sit down here and join you if you don't mind. This is my love's company, you know. Yes, you're very kind, Doctor.

I was just trying to persuade you into a love with me. But if you're doing most on gallons, you won't even consider it. Not Canada, darling. I've got under 200 pounds a year to my own right. How could we live on that? I was counting up money the grandfather was going to give us to get me started. No, no, no. Miss Malin, a little earlier, you popped a brick to green and bread and cheese and... Oh, you love it, not cocky? Yes, it's not to be said for it, you know. Well, it's to be said for it, yes, Doctor. But have you ever tried it? Not to let her in, my boy, but to... I'm telling you, if we married my wife and I was married, I had very little money. In fact, my income was just about the sum that you mentioned. And we were very happy. Father, do you have a profession, Doctor? Look at me. I've been trained for nothing except to be learned of Dunbar Castle. I can't support a wife and tradition. But you're young, Ian. You can get some kind of position, I'm sure, you can. Of course, of course, there's a matter of fact, I think that... What is it? What's wrong? The devil's work of wood, Watson. Come with me, old home, and you, Mr. Dunbar.

Mr. Holmes, what happened? It's about her. I'm into his room. It was in darkness, but in the room, I saw two figures struggling by the open case. One of the rooms was about her. As I entered, he disappeared from sight. If the attack had pushed him out of the window, he'd have the most... How dare you! The other didn't go away in the darkness. We've got lanterns and go out for the most of once. Though I'm very much afraid Mr. Dunbar that your grandfather is beyond our health. Doctor Watson will be back in just a second, so... I just like to remind you that if you want to serve a wine over the holidays that you sure the ladies will enjoy, serve Petri, California, Muscatel. Petri Muscatel is a golden wine with a wonderful flavor. The flavor of big, flump, muscat grapes. You know what a flavor that is. I'm sure you'll find that Petri Muscatel is the favorite wine of all women. This is Petri Port, is the favorite wine with men. And incidentally, if you're not sure which to get, Petri Muscatel or Petri Port,

don't buy one. Buy two. Get them both, and you'll be sure to please everyone. Now to get back to our story. Someone had pushed four holes so Walter out of his bedroom window and into the moat below, isn't that right, Doctor Watson? Yes, Doctor Watson. About to go, of course, to eat their lanterns as fast we couldn't rush outside. It was a hopeless task. The water was eight or ten feet deep and it seemed obvious that the elderly as the water wouldn't have a chance of saving himself. To research John, to pick up bobbing lanterns, the skying figures in the foster moon light, forming a weird... I'm it. Bring a lantern over here. I, sir. Can you see anything more? Nothing. I don't see why your friend doesn't call the police, Doctor Watson. The company's nothing. You thought they might be a chance of finding the old man alive, Mr. Small. He wants to void his camel with possible forceakes, sir, as well as the downbows. The scandal can't touch me or Dorothy over this. An engagement with never enough. And it's a great pity, sir, I could think some you blood in your family, be a great improvement.

Or be completely impersonal. And your be compounds they have to serve. Well, Holmes, if you're giving up hope? I don't know. The fate we never find even that blackness in graphing hooks. Have to call the police. One time is it. Sir Ian, you know the time? What did you call me, Mr. Holmes? Sir Ian, I'm curious. He does seem a bit to your homes, but of course you're right. If your program father's dead, Mr. Dunbar, you're the better in it now. And the time, sir Ian, it's a quarter to twelve, Mr. Holmes. I've bought out of an hour to the new year. Sir Ian, that was a bad thanks for just something to you? Yes, yes it does. So I'm the new tenant, am I? Stay welcome. There will be no more talk of the police for fifteen minutes. I want all of you to come back to the castle with me. As the time of midnight rings out, I shall have a statement to make. A statement that I want you all to hear.

Oh, what you bought is all back here, Coral Home. Something very funny going on. I tell you, I don't like the look of it. And I watch him like to look at it very much. If you wouldn't be so dashed mysterious, what are you up to? You haven't taken a step yet towards finding the murderer? Have I? I wonder what Coral is the... The frustration on this small brow. More human, small, and I wonder... What causes the singular look of apprehension on the face of murder? You remember, of course, on my remarking how easily you carried the large iron-buckers? Yes, you took a strong man to throw some water out of the window. What? A few years approaching. Ladies and gentlemen, in view of our recent tragedy, this is one new year's eve when none of us feels like song and delicacy. But there still remains a ritual beauty for a meat of a farm. Mr. Murdock, open the iron box, please. But I can't do that. It was only to be open for your grandfather. No, Mr. Murdock.

The phrase was that it was to be opened on the new year's eve before the baronets' 21st birthday. I am now the baronet, and I shall be 21 next year on August 21st. Open the box, please, Mr. Murdock. You're enjoying her factory, Clare. You're a flair, I hope you think of it. Suri, in Murdock, open that box. Very well. When I'm afraid you're in for something of a shock. All right, Scottie, the box is empty. Except for a sheet of newspaper in the bottom. What's the meaning of this Murdock? Read the paper, Suri, and you'll understand. I owe you four thousand sovereigns. And it's signed Alexander Murdock. On behalf of Murdock and Murdock, lawyers. You better explain this. It's the family skeleton, Suri. That notice signed by my great grandfather. The one that witnessed the original be concerned in the box. As soon as the water was born on that February 29th, my great grandfather realized that money wouldn't have to be produced for 84 years. And so he stole it. He borrowed it. He always intended to pack back, but he was never able to.

When he died, he told my father of his secret. My father and turned told me, we've always planned to put back the money, Suri, but we've never been able to do this. This is day like robbery. You could prosecute me on the firm still in business. You can ruin them. You can sue them by every... Mr. Small, if already shown a marked version of my family, I suggest you allow me to handle it. Ravoli! How dare you, God! Oh, your father. No one's going to their room. No one's leaving here until a police arrive. I'm convinced that one of you murdered my grandfather tonight. If you ask me, it's obvious who that someone is. Who, doctor? What's the use of this? You came here patting the killed for all the work, because you never until it opened that box. You thought that your shield would die with him? That's a lie. I was going to tell him everything and then ask for time to pay the money. I didn't kill him. Of course he didn't. There's your murderer. You yourself in. Brother, what do you say? I'm saying that he's the murderer. He saw that the box wasn't going to be open for another four years. He realized that the money couldn't marry Dorothy, so he killed his grandfather then ordered the box open.

You're trying to cover yourself? You'll push grandfather out of that window tonight? You thought that if he died the box would never be open. Dorothy couldn't marry me. You can't, but guess what? I'm gentleman. Because I saw home, you seem remarkably calm. Who are you? I must say I'm absolutely fascinated by listening to 34s, and accusing each other of murder, and each of them producing perfectly sound motives. It's a remarkable example of the dangers of reasoning from motive alone. We should profit by experience, what? Mr. Holmes, how can you be so calm? There's a murderer in this room. I know, Mr. Simmer-Karaz is getting a little out of hand. The small, let's conclude it. You'll talk about now. What? It's moving. I've been here for years. I'm from France. So what's the home I see? I want to go to France. What kind of a game have you been playing? In a funny game that Holmes and I invented. You might call it forcing the issue. I was determined to have the box open before the next four years, while there was still a life and look inside it. But the trickery of your family, Murdoch, has made me a better, upper man.

So what are I supposed to pay back the money in a few years? I swear I will. They're too late to do me any good. But I'll take care of the deal, get to it. I'll find a prostitute. Grandfather, the money isn't important now that you're old. You were counting on it just the same, my boy. So that you could marry Dorothy, I know that. You little marry a pauper. I won't be alive. But I'm thinking when you cops talk me father, and I am going to marry Ian. Me quite. The water? It's a very unsavory business. I think that you owe us an explanation of your behavior tonight. You tell them Holmes. I fancy a week to wrap a cream of dumb butts. Watching you all search for my body in the mo... Has made me... The explanation is a very simple one, ladies and gentlemen. When you arrived here tonight Mr. Murdoch, I knew from the way you handled the fox that they could not contain the sum of gold, the supposed old. And so you suspected fraud and devised the plan to force the opening of the box? Yes, and so water was an eager conspirator. Of course I was. Ian is 21 next August. Supposing I have died after he came of age, and before my next birthday, four years ends, the box would never have been opened.

We invented the fake murder story. By the way, Ian, I must congratulate you for grasping the possibilities of the situation so speedily. If you hadn't demanded the opening of the box, the Murdoch secret might still be a secret. Is the current plan well, Mrs. Thu bear that it has held such a miserable ending? I'm not sure to be helped with the matter. Mr. Murdoch, yes Mr. Holmes. Do you say the job family took four thousand pounds from that box? Yes, Mr. Thu. I would have sworn from its size that it would hold closer to five thousand. And in your account of a legend, what's in it? You told me that Thomas Dundar stated that his deathbed, that he had put something else in it. Something for already days, isn't it? Did the Murdoch find that extra something? No, Mr. Holmes. They found the thing that they go. I'm a very odd. I think I'll take a closer look at that box, you know. It seems to be a night of chilling secrets. I think you might as well know father. But if you don't give your consent, I shall end up here. Oh, brother, brother, brother. So such things. I owe the solution, young lady, and that I hardly think it will be necessary. What do you mean, Holmes? For me to show you all the treasure of a Dundar's.

Oh, hey, your phone, Holmes. The something for a rainy day, that owed to Thomas. God, you see, since the cubic contents of the box obviously differed from my calculations, I deduced the existence of a false pattern. I was correct. And in that space, I found this. Oh, it's a manuscript. By the way, the manuscript is a book. Look at the title page and see the author's name. This to the Dundar's. That's a... Scott! Oh, I wish it was a book. I think so, Walter. That's an original and unobvious manuscript by your distinguished name. It's a book with several times the gold that is missing from that box. You'll skip the day for us, Holmes, my boy. God bless you. Oh, oh, this has been a stranger new year. Never I knew. But it turned out to be a bunny one, thanks to you, Holmes. We'll fill up here, glasses. We're going to drink a toast to the new year. Why, Joe, you're a swelter. This is really a happy occasion. And let's complete it by singing the traditional song of the season. All the langs time.

And in this case, when we sing, should old acquaintance be forgot, I feel that in our hearts, we should be thinking of Walter Scott. If he died over 60 years ago, he's made us all very happy tonight. Should old acquaintance be forgotten and never forgotten? Well, that's it. That turned out to be a very happy new year for all consumers. That's one new year for the dollar and never forget. Well, I sure hope you'll always remember this one, too. Oh, this is a second, my boy.

That calls for a glass of porn. Fine. A world to a happy new year, my boy. For you and for our many friends listening in. And for you, Dr.. Oh, it's good.
