About this episode

On Texas Football is made possible by:

Jeff Howe, Gerry Hamilton, Jordan Scruggs and Hank South recap a massive weekend for Texas commits. Landen Williams-Callis rushed for 227 yards and two touchdowns against South Oak Cliff, Brandon Sherrard intercepted two passes while shutting down an elite receiver, and quarterback Neimann Lawrence responded to an opening loss with four touchdowns in an impressive overtime victory.

The crew also discusses concerns about five-star offensive lineman Ismael Camara playing H-back instead of tackle and provides an injury update on Jackson Cook. Plus, JaBarrius Garror earns Gerry’s Bronze Corndog of the Week after recording six tackles and 2.5 sacks, giving the disruptive Texas edge commit 4.5 sacks through his first two games.

Welcome back to on Texas football time for this week's edition of the Recording Breakdown brought to you by Mark Saunders I'm Jeff. How joined as always by Jerry Hamlin Jordan Scrux and Hank South will recap the first weekend of Texas high school football action Look at some of the Texas commits our guys saw an action and go around the horn and pick a long horn commit who stood out During the week one action the opening week of action in Texas high school football again a lot of schools around the country have already started But Texas has caught up we are often running Jerry Jordan I talked about this on the channel over the weekend But wanted to get your thoughts first and foremost land in Williams Calis got his historic senior season started off with a bang 227 yards and a couple of touchdowns in a win over Dallas South of Clive Jerry your thoughts on a game You could have seen live here on the on Texas football YouTube. Yeah, I mean my first thought was man That was very overly emotional Game you understand it because they played for a state title the last two years one and one each of them and then social media I mean, I know there was a bunch of sock players putting out photos of

Landon Williams Calis crying after the loss on social media and kind of having fun with that What the saying is don't poke the bear don't poke the land. I mean, it lets me real But you know we can talk about land and runs and the skill set and and we've talked about it in nausea I really think what he proves the more you watch him play and he proved in a game like this is It's one thing to have all that skill set. He does which is a very elite skill set He'll play football a long time if he stays healthy, but he cares He has a heart. He shows the most important things. He runs a little pissed off too He may not be as big as some other guys, but he runs off he runs with that Kind of pissed off Ability and that chip on the shoulder bit of teeth cares whether you're seeing it in person like Jordan was there I've seen it in person before or you can see it on the TV screen or the on Texas football YouTube channel That's what made Vince Young popular that's what made TJ Ford popular and that's what's ultimately going to take him to the highest levels

Because he's going to maximize his talent. I don't think there's any doubt about that now Jordan you were at the Randall sock game you were at quite a few games over the weekend including Ishmael Kamar the first game of his senior season at Gilmer big-time offensive line prospect Committed to Texas, but Jordan he's not playing at least didn't in the game you went to play offensive line What do we make of the position he's manning to start his senior year? It's definitely very interesting something something I've never seen before you know Not often is the six six three hundred plus pound Five star offensive line prospect wearing a single digit number. He's wearing number one right now For the Gilmer buck guy. So it's interesting Do I agree with it? No, I do think he can help the team more in the offensive line I also think long-term development is probably better doing that and just getting more reps in Because Thursday's game is only the 12th game of his his career So doesn't have a ton of experience on the old line Or arguably have less of it now because he's playing H back

They're putting him in motion pretty snap and he's trying to get hands on guys Um, you know, he's doing his best. He's trying his best But if you're a high school defensive back linebacker or DB you can get around the six six three hundred pound guy. So Um, I'm curious to see if Gilmer's gonna kind of change what they're doing with him I do think he can help the team more on the offensive line because he can be on the on the field every single play Instead of having to come off after being you know or needing a breather after going in motion and trying to run 20 yards down field to block someone So it it's really interesting and Someone made a comment on her board during the live updates. They're saying it's kind of similar to having shack and trying to play in my point guard I don't know about that But I do see where they're coming from it feels as if there's a better way they could use them positionally Yes last year. He was very raw. He was year one. He played 11 games last year But the flashes are there and more importantly it was reps. He was getting reps at the positional playing college That's what I think he should be doing is a senior high school, but hey

I just talk about things. I don't coach the Gilmer buck. I so We'll see if they have something different for him later on in the season Jerry I think the last time I saw something like this you can correct me from wrong if you can remember somebody sooner But I don't know if you remember this was probably 15-ish years ago You'll aim a seal Smith high school and they had jataston be some text beach him the 300 pound Jumbo athlete if there ever was one they just had him a quarterback and snap him to ball every play Yeah, no they did You know you have almost have to go back to Leonard Davis Yeah To see a highly ranked offensive lineman and now Leonard played offensive line That's the difference, but he also played middle linebacker up But that was a one-day football he had to play all over the place um, and you know with isra mullikamara I really wish he was playing offensive tackle because the fact about Jordan's that he's only this was only his 12th game of organized football I mean that is a lot of reps he needs in the future To grow as a player think about how many things he hasn't seen in his peripheral in the game of football in his short football existence

And I don't care if you're playing against detune get guys at edge In that level majority maybe find one D1 guy on your schedule. I just don't think it matters I think his for his future He has he needs to learn the game of football and see as much as he can But he needs to do it at the position. He's gonna play I mean if he had been playing football his whole life right and he had he'd played offensive tackle from you little league up The middle school and then they decided to move him as senior year. Hey man We think this might can really help our team here I'd be like all right the guys played thousands of snaps at the position even against lower level competitions They've grown up, but that's not the case So I when I look at this I'm looking at it from the Texas long horns lens And I'm saying this is gonna probably stunt his development And how far he's got the go to be an SEC level offensive lineman offensive tackle even though he's extremely Physically gifted. He's way behind in football reps

When you look at other players in this class well I do think though too like If you're not going to play an offensive tackle every snap make him a sixth offensive lineman on the field is an inline tight end Joey Fleming who's a Texas offensive tackle target in the 2028 class plays Inline tight end for his high school he goes to Huntsville high school in Alabama and they move him around He wears number 87 and they even throw to him every now and then like you can accomplish the same Things we're also getting more and more reps and It you know it if you're not going to play offensive tackle play something that's kind of the closest thing to that almost We'll still be able to have fun And you know you can catch passes that way Gilmer's lining him up in the slot Don't really think he's gonna be a threat run after the catch immediately or what not so We'll see but there's a lot of different things. I think they could do differently with them A little more than a decade ago That's how Connor Williams got on the Texas radar was an inline tight end at cop hell until he grew into an offensive tackle

So not the craziest thing in the world Hank one member of the Texas class that is being recruited as an offensive lineman is playing offensive lineman high school Jackson cook. I know you were looking forward to watching him in his opener with over west like but Little bit of a slow start for Jackson cook not fully up to speed Insurance is it one size fits all that's why drivers have enjoyed progressives Name your price tool for years now with the name your price tool You tell them what you want to pay and they'll show you options that fit your budget So whether you're picking out your first policy or just looking for something that works better for you and your family They make it easy to see your options. Visit progressive.com find a rate that works for you with the name your price tool Progressive casualty insurance company and affiliates price and coverage match limited by state law In the opener. Yeah, it was a bummer not to see him in a in a full game setting because west like was taking on inglewood California. It's kind of a unique game what uh Texas versus California and Inglewood has two

Really highly touted defensive lineman One committed to text a name and mile smith and the other committed to Oklahoma and Elijah harman So he was gonna have two Future college rivals across the line of scrimmage However, I was told he got rolled up in the scrimmage They're they're they're they're last scrimmage before week one Not seriously hurt, but they held him out just as a precaution He he warmed up with the team He actually led the team out got a video of it posted on on Texas football But he didn't play until the last series So west like was kind of in a back and forth battle with inglewood They were able to take the lead late in the fourth quarter um and I believe he was put in at left guard or one of the two interior spots Uh, because they have that new left tackle that the out of California and then That a solidified right tackle so he did get in the game But just not for the the full length of it. So we'll see him again At some point this season obviously probably see him multiple times being in Austin But yeah, jaxicoke he's okay. He's healthy. He'll be back this week. They just were taken some precaution for him

This past Friday and Hank a rare sighting Your alma mater of freshmen on the varsity cj Jones A 2030 running back getting some run with the west like varsity Yeah, it's wild thing. I think back to my time at west like and it was a big deal if you were on varsity if you were a sophomore And obviously that that was the case a lot of places back then, but now You see freshmen um moving up the ranks and the Cooper Jones running back at west like 23 the 2030 class if you feel old He is posted a bunch of offers. I think albama's offered him. He has a long list of reported offers But less like was handed them ball early and often I think he had 81 yards on the night four and a half yards of carry pretty good Considering you know, the the defense he was running up against and in in in in Eaglewood and he actually scored the game winning touchdown So you know pretty good debut as a as a freshman. I think the first High school freshman at Westlake. This is jade and great house who obviously we're not down a really great career And is you know a Notre Dame as well. So

Cooper Jones definitely won will be keeping a close eye on as he as he gets older At that at Westlake. It running back no doubt all right. We'll go around the Horn and pick one Texas commit who stood out last week Before we do that though Jerry Just get a shout out to our long running sponsor here on the recruiting breakdown that's marks onters Yeah, you know who always stands out for your insurance needs. Ha ha. That's right Texas all-sten agent marks onters He serves the Austin and Round Rock area and entire stated Texas that means he's the only insurance agent You'll need everything from your home car boat to your motorcycle RV and ATV Call Texas alum and Texas all-sten agent marks onters is office today five one two two and eight eight five seven one As always the on Texas football guarantee is with more than 35 years of experience You will be in great hands with Texas alum and Texas all-sten agent marks onters do it so many other on Texas football community members Have done over the last few years that to give marks onters office a call again five one two two and eight eighty five seventy one

All right, thank you Jerry Jordan. We'll start with you going around the Horn one Texas commit who stood out who's your guy Going to the Brandon Sherard at a shadow creek down in south houston Really impressive win-two for the sharks. They knocked off umbo summer creek And I believe it's the first time shadow creek is actually beat summer creek I know summer creek beat them the last two years In non-distant games like the one this weekend was And then in the playoffs for years ago. They also ended shadow creek season then so kind of a nice get back when For the sharks, but he finished with two interceptions Also did a really good job of keeping Benny Easter and check Benny Easter summer creek stop receiver. He's a Texas tech commit and I believe if I'm not mistaken is they would top 100 consensus prospect Hank who's your guy? Yeah, I'm gonna go the 2028 rank so the junior class Neiman Lawrence quarterback at American Heritage Started off the season with a with a loss But they got back into the wind column one in one now with a big win over east st. Louis

Out of Illinois who you know if you follow the east st. Louis over the years of hat has had some Really Talented D1 players come out of that program But overall really nice outing for Neiman Lawrence 28 to 43 passing for almost 400 yards 65% completion percentage in in four touchdowns with a with a long of 89 and so that's that's a good way to kind of To make a rebound after after taking a tough loss week one Obviously Texas has thought very highly of Neiman Lawrence. He's camped in Austin twice He was he was Steve Sarkiesian and Jay Milley's top guy For a while really before he committed and Texas was able to get that one done in the summer over Michigan And he looks like he's off to a hot start as a junior this year Jerry, I don't know if we're bronzing a corn dog or a chick-fil-a sandwich or whatever But who's getting that award from you for for this week? My bronze corn dog Award for the player the week goes to jibarious a garage and he's a problem in the state of Alabama and South Alabama That's this is gonna get's Montgomery. He had six tackles two and a half sacks in about a half

The week before in the season opener. He had more tackles and close to the same sack members I believe he's at four and a half sacks through two games and maybe six tackles for loss jibarious garor is a guy that I've thought has been underrated nationally Around around the country. He's still in the top hundred range But I just see a guy that maybe closer to top 15 the country. He plays with such a great motor He understands leverage. He is very physical at the point of attack But he's got past rushing moves through a young guy and he understands hand usage He understands how to get small there are so many things as a young edge slash linebacker That he understands about the game and then when you play with that motor and that physicality you become dominant He went into his senior season with 42 and a half sacks and I think 80 tackles for loss He's already got four and a half sacks after two games. He's a problem He's your raining five a player of the year defensive player of the year in the state and if he stays healthy I'll go ahead and go and guarantee he's gonna do it again

Few things are certain in life death taxes and will must-champ knowing what he's looking for when he's recruiting edge rushers So definitely shout out to jibaires coroor for the start of his senior season And we will keep tracking the text commits all year here at on Texas football as the high school football season rolls along Hank Jerry Jordan Thank you guys for the time the knowledge you until the expertise as always thinking of Matthew behind the scenes for producing it Thank you to mark sonars as always for sponsoring the recruiting breakdown if you're not a member over on Texas football calm Now is definitely the time to get signed up three dollars for your first three months of access for new members This is a limited time offer it will not last forever so get over to the site right now It's take advantage if it's happening on the 40 acres We're talking about it on the site where you've got boots on the ground recruiting intel the best in the Texas market So again three dollars for your first three months of access at on texas football calm Make sure that you like this video make sure you're subscribed to the on Texas football youtube channel And make sure you've got your notifications set that way anytime we drop a new video or go live You're not going to miss any of our longhorn coverage or breaking news For Hank for Jerry for Jordan for Matthew for the entire on Texas football staff
