Good morning, morning. All right. They they kept her coming in the chat talking along. We're going to talk about Ian's art from this morning. How was the long ones can dominate and build that couple that up right now? Yeah. Ian main just this article is the idea that maybe TSA is not quite the the team that they were these past in the 2020s past few years when facing Texas, but there's still somethings you can learn from a game like this. Yeah, there's always something you can learn from watching a team play football and UTSA has a few things they do well, but what they don't have is just anything that's like really overpowering like they gave Texas a little bit of trouble one year when it was like Frank. What was it? Frank Harris. Yes, lefty lefty. Frank

4:09Harris in a spread offense and they had a bunch of guys that could get open underneath and you had to worry about that and you had to worry about him running. And it was a lot. I think Owen McCown could be really dangerous if they had some weapons, but they I feel like he's doing all the work in their system and they don't really have skill players that are going to be too much trouble for Texas is my is my read on it. Yeah, I think that that team you're referring to that UTSA team ended up having guys going either to NFL or at least it's like the big 10 G6 or power four ranks. And I don't know if they have those kind of players anymore with McEwen off the NFL. I believe Paul wrote they've lost like eight of eight and probably their best 12 players to the portal and it's kind of what the Jeff trailer lifestyle is now at UTSA with the way it's it's working with NIL. Yep, he used to used to go out there and plead for like somebody attached to San Antonio

5:15or the university or something. Give me some money and we'll make something happen and we'll build a program here that'll be fun. And he didn't get any takers. It seems. Yep. Oh, there's no Cody Campbell in San Antonio. There's no Mexican restaurant, Saur, who's got a few million to throw around every year that's like, you know what I'm going to use it on. We're going to build a football game out on the out on the loop outside of the city. It's all going to the spurs now with Wembee. But let's talk about the runners and what makes them good. And I think firstly, you mentioned four points. But first, we go talk about McCown and what he does best. I'm super veteran. I believe he's on his third year starting fourth year playing real snaps start at Colorado. Third year starting correct and starting Colorado. So, so I mean, this someone has played a lot of college football is good. I'm end up leaving with some of the most snaps in the program history. What are his strengths?

6:16I don't know if it's to me or you. I was going to go to Ian, but adjust if you have any takes on the. Yeah, I mean, I covered the kid for five years and you know, growing up. He's from East Texas. He's up from about an hour down the road. His dad, Josh McCown, actually played against in high school in Jacksonville. Oh, that guy. Oh, and Owen is a dude, man. Like, Owen was one of those kids that everyone expected him to be like a great athlete, great quarterback because of who his dad was because of kind of that McCown name. The man is if he's Texas, that's exactly what that is. They are their own kind. Um, and he just, he was a late bloomer. He was so small. He was so little. I remember him at camp and just thinking, you know, he throws a good ball, but man, he made a weight 140 pounds, 150 like he was thin. He grew a little bit, but even getting into college, he went to Colorado. He was still kind

7:16of slight, still kind of small, in little grocery. He's finally growing into that McCown body. He's going to play on Sundays. He is incredibly accurate. Like accuracy is uncanny. He is going to put that ball exactly where you need to put it. Now, he's not a deep ball kind of kid. That's one of the accuracy kind of starts to fade a little bit, but in that intermediate man, this kid is, but Ian mentioned it. He doesn't have the toys that Frank Harris got to throw to the Franklin's and the kids like that, the McCormicks McCown doesn't have those kids. Devin McEun should be their star receiver this year. Obviously, where's he at? He's in Columbus, playing for Ohio State. And so it's a bum deal for Owen because this is a kid that's going to throw the ball on Sundays. Very accurate, very smart, very understands the quarterback job. And I guess when your dad played it in the NFL for 12 years, you're kind of immersed in it. Yeah, I was going to say that like you've been to point about the NFL Sundays. He's about the mold

8:19of your ideal backup quarterback in the NFL, right? Coming in, make the right throws. Doesn't need to take 10 times what Kellan Moore would have been. Exactly. And then that's why I mean, it's someone who at least Texas has to account for it. It's what I kind of like about these two out of conference management. They play outside of Ohio State. It's two quarterbacks. It's going to kind of keel over like some of the ones I malci know, that was last year when they came in. So Ian, any thoughts on this iteration of the McCown, what he does? He throws guys open extremely well. Like it wouldn't be shocking if he sticks in the NFL for a while as a backup. Because I think he has kind of the soft skills that you really that you want in a backup quarterback in the NFL. Like he knows how to protect the ball with where he places it. You know, college is so much about like athleticism and arm strength and just overpowering people so that you don't have to beat them with subtlety. Yeah. That's partly why the NFL always gets all these quarterbacks and end up

9:23being famous that like weren't the guy in college. And he's that kind of dude. I don't know if he'll be like successful in the NFL or not. But I would not be surprised to be sticks there for a while because of his just ability to place the ball. Lead is receiver away from the defender. It's really good. It's really impressive. They had like, I mean, they're kind of lucky he didn't go somewhere else too. Does he have any any eligibility left Justin probably? I think he this is senior year, but I think he's also that class of 2022 actually or maybe 23. I'm not sure but I don't see him. I don't see him coming back. I think he will be eligible and I think he will go to the drive. Yeah, I think he's 22 either way. This would have to be his last year. Yeah, yeah, it would. It would. I was trying to think if he had one of those kind of years, but I don't think he does. I don't think I don't think he'll need one either. I think he'll go in the fourth, fifth round. Again, you know,

10:25his dad was an offensive coordinator quarterback coach in the NFL up until a couple of years ago. I don't know if he still might be. He's the Vikings QB coach. Okay, still with men. I knew he was with Carolina for a minute and now he's over there with Minnesota. God, he's having to deal with Calamari. I bet he cannot wait to get his son on that on that side on that roster on that sideline. That way he can talk to somebody that knows about the sport football. Thir down quarterback or third string quarterback nine, Jay-Jama McCarthy. Ian, what is it about man coverage? That's going to be necessary in this game when you're facing a quarterback who I can throw people open is accurate. It does a lot of the little things, right? I think that if Texas plays man, it's just going to be really hard for him to find anybody with separation. And he might throw guys open a little bit underneath and move the chains a couple times. Did you watch Texas State either of you? They're game against Texas State. Not the whole thing. Just kind of highlights. UTSA went for it on fourth down like a million times. And he picked up a bunch of

11:28off. Just a scrambling. He had one draw, but mostly it was just a ball placement at the chains. I'd like to say he's not a runner. Yeah, he had one decent scramble or a draw. He's a decent athlete. He's not what I would call like a ball. Right. But I think in man coverage, it just gets really hard for any of those guys to give him anything to throw to. I just don't know if they can create separation against Texas with those guys. Yeah, from Boma, I asked if I could fit it out against Jeremiah Smith and Julian Sain, which is a pretty good marker before EOD gave me to see GSAs. We have a cowboy hat sliger out of the back. That's great. Off its wide is another thing that UTSA does well. Kind of similar to Texas State. It's another big group in the front. There's just a lot of 325, 330 pound plus people, but probably doesn't have the athleticism to match up with Texas. Would you agree

12:31in? Yeah, they're just too slow. They're good at covering people up. They're good at running like power vertical run stuff. But I think Texas's guys are just going to go around them a lot. Yeah, they don't even seem they hired an air raid coach to be the new offensive coordinator. And they they were throwing it around a lot against Texas State. And against Texas, I don't know if they're going to they may have to throw it a million times. I don't know if they have. I don't know if they think that they're going to they're even going to try to do like a deal where they just try to run the ball and eat clock. They're going to take shots. They got to do something. Yes, a gambler at this kind of stuff. Like he's going to take some shots. He won't he's going to have those guys taking. Hey, you're playing the number one team in the country. This is the day of

13:33the reckoning. You can come in here and upset the world and change everything and you know, break the internet. Jeff will have those guys ready to run through a wall. They're going to take shots. I don't think they're going to come in reserve. They don't have those guys. If they wanted to do that, they could have done that two or three years ago with the personnel. They don't have the guys. I'll do that this year. Either way, take your shots. Those are the guys you're bringing to the dance. You might as well dance with them. You can tell what he thinks about this game and that he already used the Amador, the David Amador backwards pass trick play. Already. I guess that's the state. Amador, if people don't know, Amador was like a receiver for North Shore who ended up having to play quarterback when their main dude got injured and he took him to the state championship game where Duncanville beat them. So Amador is like their starting or backup Z receiver and he's got an arm. Gadget, basically great athlete. But they already showed that

14:37wrinkle. So I'm going to tell you what, you couldn't cover that kid. Duncanville had no answer for him. Oh, um, the daughter's in the chat right now saying 60% on deep pulse. So good. Yeah. Well, that's what I was saying earlier, like McCowne's not a deep ball guy. He's just not. That's not his forte. He's really, really good in the intermediate and in. But they're going to, what I mean by shots is they're going to take their shots. You're going to see a couple plays you haven't seen before. They're going to be a couple tricks you haven't seen before. Like Ian talked about, hey, they already showed one wrinkle. Well, they'll have a few more. They're going to take their chances. Jeff's not going to go in their internal. He, he never has. He never will. My guess is that they're going to move Henderson around like wild and try to hit him on the perimeter against a cryer over the linebackers. Now, are you guys, you two, the fans, are you prepared to see how fast will enter will Henderson is?

15:40I'm sure tracks. He did like we didn't think he was going to play football. We thought he was going to run track in the Olympics like. Oh, wow. Will Henderson. Oh my God. So yeah, if he gets behind you, just struck up the band. Now, I don't know how much you're going to do that. And I like Ian's, hey, they're going to move him around, try to get him to ball. Just don't let him get behind you because oh my God. That's one of the fastest kids I've ever covered in my life. That's so good on NCAA 27. I remember we were out at the Texas High School Coach's association convention and got to talk to trailer a little bit in one of our pop-up media abilities. And he was like, yeah, my whole team got taken. I don't know how they didn't take Henderson. I'm sure glad we have him in the count this year. But everyone else has gone. It's kind of telling about the kind of players they're prioritizing. I believe they're running back. There's three of them who get good play. And they're at like seven yards of carry to start the year, which, you know, the competition's way leveling up against Texas. But they've got the

16:42speed and the ability to kind of break out these 10 plus yard runs defensively. Ian, what stands out out about this team? They are consistently big up front. They are consistently physical as a unit. They do a great job of getting their safeties to smack people. It feels like they always have a safety that will really run and lay down the law when they get a chance. They had a guy, their free safety or field safety made a hit in the Texas State game, where he popped a guy on a screen pass, where he had him lined up and he flew in there and rocked him. They have stories of guys like that. The boundary safeties are really big dude who's like a transfer from LSU, Joel Rogers. They are, yeah, they're just very consistently physical on defense and multiple.

17:43It's kind of Jeff Trailer's calling card. I remember just in telling me that when Texas hired him to be like a receiver's coach, he was the Todd end coach, special teams coordinator, even though we didn't know the special teams. He was coordinated this. They attached it to his title. You want to get that extra, you get a little bit more money when you attach these extra titles. Yeah, I think you got elevated in the offensive one point because they needed some help. But it was like too many chiefs in the one too many. Yeah, way too many. But he was more of a defensive guy by trade. And his UTSA runs the same defense that they ran more or less at Gilmer. It's like a three-down, mostly tight front. They always have linebackers that will run that can shift guys around a lot. The best test for Texas is that their defensive line is actually pretty hard to move.

18:47They're guys are legitimately stout. They're not going to get into the backfield in Tacoli for a loss. They're not going to pressure archmating probably at all. He's going to be back there with like 10 seconds some of the time. Too much time. Too much time. They are hard to push back. They are hard to push back. And I'm kind of curious just to see how it looks. Because Texas has been running a lot of inside zone this year in duo. And I'm curious what it looks like when they run that against UTSA's dudes if they can drive them back or not. If they can that's going to be really interesting and promising. But even if they can't they'll still probably run them over because the linebackers and the the linebackers are not good enough and the defense is going to be overstressed with all the weapons Texas will have on the field. So Texas will run them over one way or the other. But I'd like I'm curious to see if they can do it by actually driving some guys off the ball.

19:52Yeah, I think UTSA is trying now to like 3-2-8-5 plus guys and they're starting to their interior guys are 3-15-3-25. So I'm kind of built like a power, low power for defensive line. And they they're main four guys when I'm about to snapkants gets Texas state play a lot. So something to look out for. I know when we when they played Texas state Texas did Kenny was pretty clear about just rotating his guys keeping them fresh for the game the next week. But I do think UTSA has a lot to gain from getting their their defensive line and reps against a good Texas O line which I'm I'm glad we're able to say now. But one that's been getting a lot of pushing the run game and that's a good point for me. 20:55house day. But you know this discussion means mostly surrounding about the death for Texas how they can build it who we're looking out for. The first group you're pointing out which is one I definitely agree with this linebackers because we saw Biles and Cryer play nearly the entire game. I think they played all the snaps except for two on defense where Cryer got hurt and had to sit out one or two plays but you know can Mike or can Brad's fans become kind of a reliable plugging Mike linebacker excuse me and freshman what what are we expecting from them in a game like this. I expect him to play a ton and hopefully they look good or they are able to accrue valuable life lessons on the field. I would think this is a game where you see Apala, Ackinson, Cummings if not rotated throughout the game then at least late. And a UTSA is so overmatched that I would consider rotating them in when the game is still meaningful

21:58and sticking a chance. As they make a mistake you know you can't come off the field and must chap can scream at them and explain whether dumb or whatever but they're going to need one of these guys to do something this year and this is a great game to figure out who it could be or what needs to happen for them to get to that level or whatever. I think this game could be extremely important in that respect. Justin is there one of these three that you're most looking out for to really contribute year one. I probably wouldn't be against Tennessee but as you get into October when you're playing a lot of these higher level teams Oklahoma, Florida, Ole Miss it's there one of those three that you're really looking out for. And linebacker yeah I think we're going to see more cozy I you know he kind of flashed a little bit if you didn't pay a dnsd to do I believe it's a week one like cozy kind of flashed. I think we'll see a little bit more from Ackinson but I do think the rotation man it's a long season and there's not a ton of depth there so I do think a rotation.

23:06I think you're going to see young guys obviously against UTSA especially in the second half because they they they're going to have to be prepared for that they need durability throughout this year and you don't want you don't want cryer in in in in vials taking almost every snap like that's not ideal at all that understood against a team like Ohio State UTSA I think we're going to see Rocky Cummins I think we're going to see Tyler Ackinson and dude I'm telling you cozy is the one that is making noise amongst that young group in there. Koseyak Paula has got his head up and I guarantee you he's going to make a player too in this like a half in this game. I think my take on it is it cozy seems like the one from we've heard that's most likely to be able to play in year one and really yes but I do almost think that you you'd hope the most the player that most takes a jump in this kind of game is is Rocky Cummings because I just am not so sure about Spence is a true Mike linebacker in these games and he

24:06plays really well when he's lined up adds that Sam off the edge and we saw it against Ohio State really early I'm first defensive play I believe it was in that in the backfield so I he and could Cummings be the kind of guy that that in a game like this gets the right reps to maybe spell cryer later on in the year in real games against SCC opponents. That's the idea. Somebody gets somebody to that level just to think so Paula I that would not surprise me I actually thought I thought a Paula looked the most natural at inside linebacker in the spring game and then Cummings and then Ackinson in terms of like playing based defense reading the flow figuring out in playing and getting there like aggressively and confidently I was like I was like it's kind of funny that a Paula is the one that's playing Sam because he looks more natural inside than these other two dudes do currently but then the other two dudes are like they're obviously going

25:13to be outstanding when they figure it out but in terms of a lot of them for Tyler you're not going to take him off the field yeah yeah yeah I'm not worried about him at all none but in terms of who is most likely to be ready to play like clean winning football. Coacy Coacy that that makes sense to me he just looks yeah he looks the part like it's one of those guys I remember I guess it was I guess it was what's Texas State he just he just looked like he belonged and it's a guy we didn't you know yeah you know Ian talked him up during you know doing the spring and stuff and we'd heard good stuff over the summer with a number of those linebackers but Ack Paula is just one like he just he's just looks like an inside linebacker like he's prepared he's got the frame he's got the feet but most of all he's got the mindset for it yeah that was a true win in recruiting Ian moving question in the chat more about prior in this game but is the Samorchers of

26:15spread passing attack that cry are my thrive thrive against and the what's the way maybe that he would get caught out on cover did that kind of extreme for your shoot like you might be in Tennessee I would worry about UTSA motioning Henderson around making him cryers responsibility and coverage and throwing it to him quick on the point and I would worry about them running other they have like a million different concepts where it's like running back for it inside receiver goes out second outside receiver slot comes back into the linebackers responsibility and they test the linebackers ability to quickly identify their guy and get there and McCown is you know lightning quick reading that and throwing it accurately they can't they can't beat Texas doing that yeah but they could like hold on to the ball and drive the field some and uh what not so yeah I

27:21think it's absolutely a game where cryer the spry should have written that this is absolutely a game that cryer could be tested in or attacked effectively I like that test if he shuts them down then uh that's a bad sign probably for some upcoming Texas opponents but they could also like just sub amount the cryer cryer could play well against him it still give up to be place yeah that's that's a that's a mismatch Ian this is what they do well this is what you do does well 100% 100% I mean then I'll push over here let's move over to the offense and uh I think there there's no comment what quarter of doing maybe CKJ Lacey because he's someone that you identify right here is uh he's gonna have to play real snaps since game in third quarter we think in after the second series for Texas or maybe just kind of depending on how good the team is doing

28:22uh usually the quarterback gets the first series of the third quarter and then you kind of go from to deco crappy and now you want to get another look at something or did you score touchdown or whatever so second or third drive of the third quarter I would assume this one will see Lacey and I and then you know they probably want to get to DIA Bell too at some point yeah and it probably needs to happen on Saturday because I don't know if there's a whole lot of other games or opportunities no the chance and if I have to play five you the five to play five plus the postseason rule you just don't care anymore there's no reason not to play DIA Bell you can't there's no red shirt to burn right there's there's no there's no there's nothing they would have everything to gain nothing to lose that's it yeah get up by 40 50 in the fourth quarter give them a few wraps there uh but yeah I mean Lacey's got to play because I mean we've already seen the back up

29:24may actually it's very durable but he did get injured at a point last year it has dealt with injury his career is a mobile quarterback I mean there's gonna be a gaming in it where KJ Lacey is gonna have to make a throw over too yes hopefully not I feel I feel less confident than I with that the long averages it's it's not Quinn yours anymore like Quinn yours was one of the toughest guys but he's also injury prone yeah uh I mean his uh I wouldn't say he's I don't he's just harder to he's harder to hurt he's got a different frame like he got he got beat up worse than Quinn yours ever did last year yeah but it's just harder to slow him down because he's so big and sturdy uh by the way Michael Harjes asks uh who comes in after Cryer it was Brad Spence

30:25yeah against Ohio State and uh I was worried about it but then the next drive it was Cryer again and he was okay so it didn't matter he's not a linebacker period yeah he's like an edge he's he's a really good one too no he is he has some of the suddenness he's got some like the explosive first step countertrait he and he's got a tenacity about him too like he's he's down there to rumble I just don't think he's a real linebacker well that's one of the problems with how they constructions constructors off season even without Smith having what happened to him but like you just kind of wish you could have spence was at certain points of the year's second in and pressures so like that that's somebody you kind of wish was playing a little more off the edge natural yeah absolutely and that's probably where a bow bar and sort of been nice to have on the team but you know I don't want to get you to round up just a bow bar yeah it's not a Thursday it's not

31:28a Thursday show unless Michael Terry's been called a linebacker and bow bar and suspension to justice this point that's why Brad's Vince is being forced forced against his will to play linebacker because of the way they handled bow barons and obviously the tiniethy situation honestly bow barons that would have been his spot and nobody would have moved him off of it it's really obvious now but they should have not paid tiniethany and let him walk and instead paid barons bubble that's so but that's so like Han's not 2020 I know I know and they would have they would have been ripped to shreds for it oh yeah but it apparently was the right call yes yeah or was it first like there that would have that could have predicted that there's there's yeah the predictable part of it was that Smith placed the same position as Biles

32:31he's not a natural ready made inside linebacker and he was injured and lost weight and those things are all kind of known early on and they still let it go Ryan Nelson I thought you were going to say Leunga Ian Leunga would also have been really nice to have kept around on this team yeah slightly I would have rather have had it this again this the easiest thing in the world now to say but I would rather have had both Leunga and barons than Smith Chris Bennett knows that wasn't tiniethany Smith that's a bit we got a super chat and that's a really good question not quite what we've been talking about but I do want to bring it up after two weeks of football this Texas schedule look tougher or maybe slightly easier than expected going into SEC play and pretty yeah Justin go for a pretty good question tougher tougher Mississippi states gonna be tougher yeah Mario Taylor is gonna be a test
