Would it be a sin to ignore something you know God wants you to do?
You're listening to His light your path with Pastor Rod Holler's senior.
Today's devotional, the sin of a mission, turns our attention to something we often miss.
The things God asks us to do that we leave undone.
Have you ever felt God prompting you to take action only to find yourself holding back?
And now here's Pastor Holler's devotional, the sin of a mission.
Numbers chapter 32 verses 20 to 23.
And Moses said unto them,
if ye will do this thing,
if ye will go armed before the Lord to war,
and will go all of you armed over Jordan before the Lord,
until he hath driven out his enemies from before him.
And the land be subdued before the Lord,
then afterward ye shall return,
and be guiltless before the Lord, and before Israel.
And this land shall be your possession before the Lord.
But if ye will not do so, behold,
ye have sinned against the Lord,
and be sure your sin will find you out.
The context is that Israel was beginning to conquer the promised land.
The two and a half tribes wanted to live on the east side of the Jordan River.
They did not want to cross Jordan and live there.
Moses granted them the request, but they were warned.
They were to continue with the other tribes,
until the land on the west of Jordan was completely conquered.
Moses warned these two and a half tribes that they must fulfill all their responsibilities
before they can go home to live.
If they do not fulfill their duties,
then their sin of omission will find them out.
In context, this verse is warning against unfulfilled responsibilities.
It is easy to identify the sins that are committed.
The person does something that's wrong,
and when that deed is discovered,
others will know that something wrong was done.
But sins of omission are different.
A sin of omission is when a person fails to do what was proper for him to do.
In one sense, the person did not do something wrong.
Rather, he did not do anything when he should have done something.
He could say, don't blame me, I didn't do anything,
and that is the very point.
He should have done something.
That sin of omission,
a failure to do what he should have done, will be found out.
It is true that people sin,
and they can hide it from others.
But that is not the true meaning of this passage.
The two-and-a-half tribes were to help their brothers
to conquer the promised land.
If they failed to do their job,
then that sin of omission would eventually be discovered.
How does this affect us as believers?
Well, we must tend to our responsibilities.
If we do not, then we are guilty of sins of omission.
For example, if we encounter someone who has a genuine need,
and we fail to help when we could have,
then we have committed a sin of omission.
The failure to act was the sin.
Remember, numbers, chapter 32, verse 23.
But if ye will not do so,
behold, ye have sinned against the Lord,
and be sure your sin will find you out.
So it is that our sins are not only the wrong actions that we have done.
Our sins include the things that we fail to do.
Let us consider and not be guilty of sins of omission.
That wraps up today's devotional from Pastor Holler,
the sin of omission.
As you go about your week, remember,
God sees not only what we do,
but also what we leave undone.
As we go about a week,
let's aim to do what he lays on our hearts.
