About this episode
If you're reading this in a big city, congratulations! You have reliable local news options! If you're living somewhere smaller... well, it's a bit of a dice roll, really.
While most communities still have at least one options for reporting on their every day lives — everything from city council to education, local hospitals and sports and events — but news deserts are spreading with every closure of small town newspaper or radio station, and while independent publications and podcasts are working hard to replace them, that business mode is difficult to make work in smaller places.
Today, we sit down with April Lindgren, professor emeritus at Toronto Metropolitan University and co-founder and director at the Local News Research Project, to discuss what happening to newsrooms across the country and what comes next.
Feedback from listeners is so, so welcome. If you have something to say, email us: [email protected].
