On the San Jose Sharks Audio Network. The San Jose Sharks Audio Network presents the Teal Report. Here's Dan Ruzanowski. From SAP Cedabit San Jose, the rivalry between Northern and Southern California is renewed officially for 2026-27. It's meeting one between the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings. San Jose is coming off a very important overtime victory against the Florida Panthers, while the Kings are fresh off a tough loss on their opening night on the road in Denver, Colorado
against the Abilance. There are a lot of things to like about the way that the Sharks played, but Alex Wenberg says there's always room to improve the way that they executed. No, I mean a lot of good things. I feel like obviously coming off first game, a lot of energy, a lot of nerves for a few guys, but I think we played some good hockey. Obviously we used a speed, we were a fiscal, and it's a tough team to play against. We really stepped up to the plate. A lot of good things to take with us. We've got to execute a little bit better on some areas, and especially when you have a lead like that, you can really let them get into the game. So, not perfect, but I mean, first game we take that, and I'm in obviously looking towards the next one. Tata Tafoli says it was really good for the Sharks to get a victory on opening night, but they need to build on that, moving ahead. Yeah, I mean, obviously giving up goals like that kind of back-to-back wasn't necessarily what we planned on doing, but I think at the same time we did a lot of good things, and finding a way to beat a team that a lot of people have as a favor to win the Stanley Cup is a big accomplishment for us at the start of the season.
For Darnel Nurse, it was the first time skating through the Sharks head and wearing teal for a game in the National Hockey League. He talked about how much he enjoyed playing for the Sharks in that first game and getting the win. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. It was a great night off. See the emotion and the energy and the building was great. The team, we had a great team game and it was a good idea to get the first win under our belt and let me move on to this. But Nurse says you have to establish tone in the division. And as a former member of the Edmonton Oilers and a Pacific division team, he knows all about how tough the L.A. kings can play. Yeah, I mean, the visual games always hold a little extra weight. Even early on in the year, you never know how important these points are down the stretch, right? Yeah, whenever you get the opportunity to play in your division and play teams, you know, that you may even, if you find yourself lucky enough to be in the playoffs, you can find yourself against two. These games are more and more important as the year goes on, but you can't lose sight
of it early on in the season. So it's nice to have L.A. coming in here for a second game. Hopefully we get the Shark Tank Bussing again and have some fun with it. Head coach Ryan Worsavsky feels that the Sharks were pretty well prepared defensively for Florida. And there's not a lot of change that has to come for tonight. Yeah, I think we did it. We had a pretty good plan in place and have an understanding of how we want to defend. Obviously, there's always a few things you want to clean up. And this is a team that probably gets a little bit more activity off the ozone face off for them. So we have to be, you know, obviously extremely aware in our D zone draws and understanding when we went, we have a plan so we can get out. And when we lose it, we have an understanding to, you know, protect the middle ice and making sure we're keeping, you know, these high skill players to the outside. Don't expect any lineup changes for the Sharks, but there is one question mark heading into the game. Jacob Trubod didn't practice yesterday and was not on the ice this morning due to the fact that he was a little under the weather. And so he's considered a game time decision. However, if he's not available, Sam Dickinson is raring to go to make his season debut. You'll have to check that out during warm up.
But what you don't have to check out is who's going to be in goal. Yaroslav Askerov was outstanding when he had to be against the Florida Panthers and he inspired his teammates. Alex Wenberg talked about it. I'm amazing. I mean, he's a hell of a goalie and he's just see the confidence in his game as well. How I was making the big key save. So it's great. Obviously, and also for him to start a season off with a win as well. So like I said, a lot of good things to build on, and especially like the first game was not always going to be perfect. But now you can say get some swag if I miss it. Garnel Nurse also added that the goal-tending really gave the Sharks a boost when those big saves were made by Askerov and Game 1. Yeah, I mean, he was amazing for us. The saves that he made, timely saves as well. Even down the stretch chart, those later frame, the lay of frame there on the third, he was able to make some saves that kept us in the game and helped us win the game. As we all know, Luca Canyoni scored his first NHL goal in overtime to propel the Sharks to victory. He along with young players like 18-year-old Ivar Stenberg were certainly evident in the
game with their energy and with their contributions. And Titer Tafoldy says that's hugely important. Everybody on this roster is going to be a big part of our team and it doesn't matter if you've been in the league for a long time or not. It's relying on everybody and it was one of those things where they stepped up and did a great job. And like I said, we found a way to win the game and we just got to keep building on it. Stenberg had his parents in the stands for his first NHL game and Alex Wenberg, his line mate thought he did very well. When things got a little bit rough out there, Colin Graff stood up for Stenberg and of course Jacob Truba also stood up for McLean's Set of Braini when Brady Kitchuk got a little
extra curricular early in the game and Wenberg really liked that. Yeah, no, it's amazing. I mean, obviously this is what we talked about this team as well. That's a matter who it is. It's a big hit or whatever. You have guys stepping up for one another and it's just great. I mean, obviously Trubes doing it for Mac but a guy like Graff, he was stepping up to the plate as well. So I think that's his show's character of those guys and that's what we have this team and what we fight for one another. If it's a game broadcast, breaking news or a player feature, the place to find it is right here on the San Jose Sharks Audio Network. It is going to be a little bit strange. It's the first time in two decades that the San Jose Sharks have faced off against the LA Kings and on Jake Coupatar, the future Hall of Fame Center, will not be on the Kings
roster. Tadda Tafoldi, who was Coupatar's teammate, certainly recognizes that. Yeah, I think it's going to be weird. Obviously, it's a big change for them in the organization, but it's a big test for us. Obviously, a big rival of ours and a game that we need to win. But it isn't only Tafoldi. Head coach Ryan Warsawwski says it will indeed be a little bit odd to see an LA Kings game without Coupatar being in the scouting report. Yeah, that is. And it's probably a good thing for us. Obviously, a really good player out of hell of a career. It's a tough opponent to play when he was on the ice because of the matchup situation. So they've added some players in Zuccarello and Paneren that can obviously score and try to fill a role for them. Scott Lotton. So this is still a deep team that can make you pay on the offensive side of it. So a little bit of a different game, obviously, then Florida and the makeup. But like I said, our identity can't change. Los Angeles opened their season with an eight to four loss on the road in Denver, Colorado against the Abeldans.
A game in which the Kings gave up four goals on the power play, but yet scored two short-handed goals. Head coach Peter Lotton talked about what his team needs to work on tonight. I think that there was things that we did well. And I think that there's things that we need to clean up and do better. And I felt like a lot of the things that we gave them were, you know, there are responsibility. There are things that can be in our control, staying out of the penalty box, the execution of what we're doing, staying behind the rush, get chances to score offensively. And we didn't connect on them. So we'll find ourselves chasing the game more so than that. Join us for all of the exciting play by play coverage of the San Jose Sharks, Amelda Sanjolus Kings. Mark Smith joins me tonight with a broadcast that starts at 6.30 p.m. Pacific time on the Sharks Audio Network affiliate station near you on the Sharks plus SAP Center app. And of course, online at SJsharks.com slash listen.
