But when the group travelled from Kentucky to Florida to collect fifteen year old Heather Wendorf, their planned escape to New Orleans took a devastating turn. Heather’s parents, Richard and Ruth Wendorf, were found brutally beaten to death inside their Eustis home, while their youngest daughter had disappeared along with Rod and his friends.
The investigation that followed soon exposed a disturbing world of blood rituals, animal killings and teenage obsession, while raising a much darker question about where fantasy ended and real violence began.

This episode today is part two of the vampire clan murders. It's a dark story with a lot of information, so we suggest you listen to part one to really understand everything that leads up to the brutal events that unfold. But if you're ready to continue with us now in part two, well then let's begin.
My name's Ben. I'm Nicole and you're listening to Wicked and Grim. A true crime podcast. Did you fall off your chair? No. No? No. Okay, because I left you on the edge of your seat in the last episode, so I'm just checking. Making sure you're okay. You sure left me a long time. It's been a couple days. Come on now. Okay, as you are doing the little intro for, you know, this is a part two, I just just curious if anyone out there, whatever, even just listen to the part two without listening to a part one.
I feel like that is negative, but I mean, I don't think anyone really would. But to be fair, it's also like a warning like, hey, this is part two. Check out part one first. Yeah. So, I mean, honestly, I'm not going to judge anyone though. If all you want to hear is what happens in a part two, I'm not going to like do spoiler alerts or whatever right now, but then I mean, take so be it. Yeah. Well, I mean, I guess you do a little, you know, intro two and the recap of what happened last one. I do. I do. Which do you want me to just do it right now? Since we're already on the conversation. Yeah, it is already coming back to me too. Like, you really, really did leave us hang in there. Yeah, I did. Okay, let's hear this. Well, in part one, we went to Murray Kentucky. And also we looked at the early life of Rod Farrell. He was a teenager who had grown up in an unstable environment and who by his mid teens had become increasingly fascinated with gothic imagery, role playing and vampirism.
After meeting Stephen, Jaden Murphy, Rod was introduced to a small group of teenagers who practice a form of vampirism that involved cutting themselves and drinking one another in his blood. Rod was eventually crossed over, as they called it, by Jaden during a blood-sharing ritual at the old Salem cemetery, but their relationships soon deteriorated as Rod became increasingly violent and began disregarding the rules. Jaden believed we're in place to govern the group. So after separating from Jaden, Rod created a vampire family of his own. He placed himself at the center of it as a vampire named Visago, surrounding himself with teenagers, including Michael Schaefer, Scott Anderson, Charity Kisee, and Dana Cooper, while presenting himself as their sire and the vampiric father. But the violent surrounding Rod was also becoming increasingly real. He killed a kitten in front of Jaden, regularly talked about murder, and by October 1996,
he had become a suspect in the horrific break-in at the Murray, Calaway County animal shelter, where dozens of dogs were released, and two puppies were deliberately killed and mutilated. At the same time, Rod had remained closely connected to 15-year-old Heather Wendorf, an old friend in Eustace, Florida, who had become immersed in the same vampire identity and desperately wanted to leave home. So in November of 1996, Rod Scott, Charity, and Dana left Kentucky with a plan to collect Heather and continue to New Orleans. Their transportation was Rod's car, which was a ridiculously unreliable vehicle. As they reached Eustace, Rod began openly talking about a solution to that, which was taking the Wendorf family's Ford Explorer. More than once that day, he told people he intended to kill Heather's parents, Richard and Ruth Wendorf, and then take their vehicle to continue their journey. His friends had heard Rod make violent threats so many times before, and so much so that they
didn't really believe he was actually serious. When Rod asked Heather directly, whether she wanted her parents dead or alive, Heather answered plainly. She wanted them alive and told him, quote, don't even go near my parents. Now that evening, Charity and Dana drove Heather around Eustace so she can go say goodbye to friends before leaving town while Rod and Scott remained behind near the Wendorf home. And that is where we left things on the evening of November 25th, 1996. And Jennifer Wendorf was also away from home. Heather was gone with Charity and Dana now too. So Richard and Ruth were inside their home alone as Rod and Scott began making their way towards it. That's what we left off in part one. Any questions? Any questions? Any questions? No, this is a disturbing one. It's very disturbing. It's definitely disturbing. I remember you were getting the HBGB's just from the idea of drinking blood.
Yeah, it still does it to me. Like that is just so disgusting. Rightfully so. It's not exactly a pretty picture when you imagine. Yeah. I mean, people going to have whatever beliefs, I guess, but that's just like unsanitary gross, unsafe, dangerous. I don't know. Do you have enough fingers to list all the things you find wrong with it? Well, I'm a little bit of a germaphob, which I don't know if people on here might know that. And that just is, it's just too much. Like I couldn't even imagine doing something like that. You go into a public place and you've got your purel with you immediately. Oh, God. I can't imagine you drinking someone else's. Yeah. And if I do not have my hand sanitizer, it is a problem. Like I won't even want to eat really. Basically. Yeah. So that's just, it's just not for me, I guess. Understandable. I mean, I don't think drinking each other's blood is for many people. No. Yeah. It shouldn't be really. I'm good. Because it's dangerous. Right.
So anyways, if you're good, you want to go to the rest of this? Can you go on with part two? Let's hear it. Okay. Here what you got for us. Rue Dwarf, charity key see and Dana Cooper gone. Rod Farrell and Howard Scott Anderson approached the Wendorf home in Eustace, Florida. Now Rod and Scott didn't immediately rush inside when they got there though. Instead, they moved around the property and looked through windows. They could see 49 year old Richard Wendorf. He was on the couch with the TV on. Ruth was somewhere over in the bathroom, perhaps in the shower. Otherwise the house was quiet. After scouting around, they entered through an unlocked door into the garage. In inside, they began looking for something that they could use as a weapon. Rod eventually picked up a short crowbar from the garage and Scott followed him into the house. Richard was still in the couch when they entered. Then Rod approached him from behind while the TV was playing loud enough that Richard
didn't even notice the teenagers enter the room. Rod raised the crowbar up and swung it into the side of Richard's head. Richard had no time to react and the first blow rendered him unconscious immediately. But Rod continued striking. Richard suffered extensive blunt force trauma to his head and face, including fractures to his skull and severe injuries to his brain as well as fractured ribs even. Rod continued to hit Richard because he said he was still breathing. He even struck him in the chest with a pointed end of the crowbar, describing it as striking him near the heart. And by the time Rod stopped, Richard was either dying or already dead from his injuries. Scott stood there. He watched it all play out before entering the house Scott had been prepared to participate in this. The plan that they came up with was for Rod to attack Richard while Scott dealt with Ruth. That was their plan. But when Scott watched Rod deliver the first blow to Richard's head, whatever willingness
he had inside of him disappeared as the reality of it all came crashing down. Okay. I would expect that from somebody, right? It's like that's a normal reaction. That is. Okay. You know what? Actually, shit, I can't do this. Yeah. That's brutal. That's what you would expect from a human being. Yes. Actually, no, I'm not going to kill somebody. Yeah. Like this is wrong. We're doing something massively wrong here. I even have some quotes from Scott here from later on when he said, quote, when I saw him make the first blow, I knew I couldn't end quote. Now Rod didn't have the same reaction though. It didn't even really seem to phase him. In fact, with Richard now incapacitated, Rod simply began looking to the house for valuables and for the keys to that Ford Explorer that he had his eyes on. However, when Ruth suddenly appeared, it all changed. Rod's description of precisely what happened next has changed in some details over the years, but his earliest account places Ruth coming from the shower and encountering him
in or near the kitchen. Rod claimed he had not initially intended to kill her. According to him, Ruth reacted to finding strangers inside her home by confronting them. She threw or spilled hot coffee on him and then lunged at him, clung at his face. Now the coffee and the claim that Rod had planned to spare her come from Rod's own version of events though. So we can't exactly say that it's most reliable. But what happened physically was considerably clearer than the alleged intentions he described because Rod turned the crowbar onto her next. Ruth was struck in the face, then repeatedly struck around the head. She suffered catastrophic blunt force and chopping injuries from this crowbar, including multiple skull fractures and severe lacerations to her brain. One of the blows was even powerful enough to sever her brainstem. But Rod just kept swinging.
The most detailed accounts of Ruth's injuries describe 23 separate wounds with 16 of those wounds involving her head. The pattern evidence showed that at least part of the attack continued while Ruth was already down on the floor, with Rod positioned over top of her as he struck her again and again. She ultimately laid face down in a pool of her own blood. With the trauma to the back of her head so extensive that witnesses who later entered the house could immediately see the severity of the injury. And I'll go into a little bit more detail of the severity of that in a little bit. Okay, well, because I just have a really cool question. Would she have recognized him? Like would they have known who he was? I'm not sure about that. I don't know exactly the history because he was from this area as well. He lived here a little while. Which is why he kept in contact with Heather. But I don't know if it was like, hey, they were just kind of friends from school a bit, or if he would have ever met their parents or not.
Okay. But honestly, too, that extent of injuries right there doesn't seem like, oops, I didn't mean to kill you. I wasn't planning to kill you. Oh, no. Well, my next sentence here that I have written, Rod would eventually describe the final moments in graphic terms saying he continued beating Ruth until her skull gave way. Oh, I don't even know what that means, but okay. Yeah. That's not a simple, well, I'm just going to hit you so you stop attacking me. There is some animosity in that. Yeah. That's the sick bastard right there. Now Richard had also sustained an extraordinary number of injuries too. The detailed accounts eventually placed a number of wounds to his body at 22. His face and head had absorbed much of the attack, leaving extensive fractures and brain trauma. Now, after Ruth and Richard were dead on the floor, Rod and Scott began taking things that they could use. Among the stolen property was Ruth's pearl necklace and a hunting knife.
They then located the keys to the Ford Explorer and took Richard's wallet and a discovery credit card. Before leaving, Scott pulled the phone cord from the wall as well in order to prevent anyone from inside the home from immediately using the phone to place any sort of calls for help. But that's not all. The teenagers also left behind a very strange detail on one of the victim's bodies. Richard was reported to have small burns. His body bore arrangements of a V-shaped marking with these burns with dots surrounding it. Now Rod had previously associated a V with the vampire identity he had assumed and each dots surrounding this V represented each member of his group. After they had everything they needed from this home, Rod and Scott then walked out of the window of home, climbed into the family's Ford Explorer and drove off.
They first drove around looking for the girls and eventually reconnected with Charity, Dana and Heather. Okay, I just have to say though, that makes me angry. What he just did to the dad's body like that. Yeah, desecration of his remains. Yeah, I don't know, that makes it just because you're almost hoping like he's young, maybe he'll have some remorse or something, but there's not in there. There was nothing of any sort of remorse flowing through him that night. Nothing, nothing even that followed immediately afterwards. I mean, eventually there may be some remorse and trial words and stuff that we go through, but as far as prior to, nope, not an ounce. Yeah, because what is the point of doing that to the body like, gosh, I don't know, that just like up levels it to me a little bit. Now Heather immediately wanted to know why they were driving her parents' vehicle. Rod and Scott showed up suddenly with this Ford Explorer and it was their cars, which
was like, what the hell? Now, in fact, Rod had even changed his shirt. However, there was still reportedly blood splatter across his face. Now as the group prepared to abandon Scott's failing car and continue in the Ford Explorer, Heather became increasingly uneasy with the situation, repeatedly asking what had happened and where her parents were. She even insisted that they needed to return the vehicle because she was worried what her parents would do when they realized that it was gone. No one gave her a straight answer at first though. Heather even noticed Rod speaking quietly with charity and then saw the two of them looking towards her, which made her even more suspicious. But eventually, after Heather continued to demand answers, charity told her the truth. Her parents Richard and Ruth were dead. It was only then that Heather learned what had happened while she had been away saying goodbye to her friends.
Heather had seen her parents alive only a few hours earlier and Rod, she even told him specifically not to harm them, but he had murdered them in cold blood. Now she didn't leave the group though. Instead she remained in the Ford Explorer as they continued away from Eustace and towards Louisiana. Heather would later explain that by this point she was afraid of Rod and that she feared what he might do to her if she tried to get away too. Now back at the Wendorf home, no one had called police, not yet, but someone was about to be on their way home. Someone was going to walk through that front door. Hey, what's up guys? At approximately 10.30 pm on Monday, November 25th, 1996, 17-year-old Jennifer Wendorf returned to her family home and used us after her work shift. When she arrived, she first walked inside and there was nothing that immediately told her, you know, what had happened inside while she was gone. She saw her father Richard laying on the couch in the living room with his feet visible.
And Jennifer initially assumed that he just fell asleep watching TV. So trying not to wake him, she continued through the house without stopping to take a closer look. However, she noticed that something was wrong with the telephone. She tried to use it and then she discovered that the cord had been pulled from the wall. It was strange, but maybe something caught on something else and it was accidents, you know, like something jared it from the wall in movement of something else. So she went to her sister's room, Heather's room, to use the phone there. But Heather was nowhere to be found. As Jennifer continued moving through the house, she noticed what appeared to be blood and then followed it towards the kitchen. It was there when she found her mother Ruth laying face down in a large pool of her own blood. Her head had been beaten in. Jennifer even described the scene years later. And she remembered seeing her mother's brain tissue scattered across the kitchen floor.
In a panic, Jennifer remembered her father. He was on the couch. She rushed to the living room and what she mistaken initially for him just sleeping peacefully in front of the TV, well now it was unmistakable. His head and face had been so severely damaged that Jennifer struggled to even comprehend what she was seeing. And again, years later, in fact, she remembered looking at him and wondering, quote, where did his face go? End quote. She had now found both of her parents and there was no realistic possibility that either of them was still alive. I knew about the sister, but for some reason in my head, well, I wanted this to be like that she was just off at school or off somewhere because like no kid, I don't even know how you would get through your life after have seeing your parents to that extent. Schematic to say the least. That is horrible. She literally wondered what happened to his face and saw her mother's brain matter splattered
throughout the kitchen. Yeah. Now, I did say floor because I wasn't sure it was on the walls or sealing or anything. So I'm saying floor to be safe, but I'm almost positive just from an educated guess that it would have been more than just the floor. Mm hmm. Yeah. That is you would just never on see that. No. Now, using a remaining working telephone inside the home, Jennifer then called 911 and did her best to explain what she just discovered saying, quote, my mother and father have just been killed. She also told the dispatcher that she had just walked through the door and just found this. And when the dispatcher asked about like their condition, Jennifer had no doubt in her mind and she responded with, quote, their dead. Now officers immediately went to the when door for residents. There they found Richard on the couch and Ruth in the kitchen just as Jennifer described. Both victims had suffered extraordinary amounts of trauma to the head and face.
And investigators could also see that the violence had not been confined to a single blow or a brief confrontation. There was blood evidence throughout portions of the scene and at least one telephone, of course, being disabled deliberately by being pulled from the wall. For the moment, however, officers could only document what they were seeing. The significance of the individual wounds, the blood pattern and other physical evidence would require a much more careful examination. There was also an immediate problem beyond the two bodies that were found. Fifteen-year-old Heather Wendorf was missing and Jennifer wasn't able to tell police where her younger sister would be. And given what had happened to Richard and Ruth, investigators initially had no way of knowing whether Heather had been abducted, attacked somewhere else, or taken from the house by whoever had killed her parents, they knew nothing. Police therefore had to treat her disappearance as potentially connected to the violence until they could establish otherwise.
But investigators soon discovered that something else was missing too, and that was the family's blue Ford Explorer. That opened several possibilities. The killer, or killers, might have stolen the vehicle after the murders. Heather might have taken it herself, or she could have been taken away in it by abductors. As officers began speaking with Jennifer and people who knew Heather, they soon learned that she had recently been talking about leaving home. She had also been communicating with teenagers from Kentucky who had traveled to Florida to see her. And those names quickly gave investigators their first real direction. The group consisted of Roderick Justin Farrell, Howard Scott Anderson, Charity Lynn Kesey, and Dana Lynn Cooper, all of whom had recently arrived from Murray, Kentucky. Information found at the house and gathered from Heather's friends further indicated that her disappearance had probably been voluntary. So rather than finding evidence that Heather had simply vanished without explanation, police
were beginning to reconstruct a plan in which she intended to leave useless with these Kentucky teenagers. That still left the far more serious question of what connection, if any, those teenagers had to the two bodies inside the house. Now the burned V-shape arrangement on Richard's body, with the dots positioned around the markings, also drew particular attention. At that stage, there was no obvious reason why someone should have deliberately burned such a symbol into a murder victim, and nothing about the windows themselves provided an immediate explanation for it either. As police worked through the night and began contacting other agencies, the names from Kentucky produced a very important response. As we know from part one, the authorities in Murray already knew Rod Farrell and who he was. He was the 16-year-old who was suspected in the October 14th Murray, Calaway County, Animal Shelter, Breakin, where two puppies were killed and mutilated, and dozens of dogs were
released. Local authorities also knew about the group of teenagers surrounding Rod and the vampire identities that they had adopted. So suddenly, the unusual markings in Eustace had some possible context. Rod and the people around him, drank one another's blood, referred to themselves using vampire terminology, and Rod had associated himself with a V-shape symbol in the past. Now, none of that by itself established who had murdered Richard and Ruth though. But it gave investigators considerably more reason to locate the teenagers from Kentucky as quick as possible. And by November 26th, the search was expanding beyond Florida alone. And by November 27th, Warren's had been issued as a authorities attempted to locate these five teenagers, Rod's got Charity, Dana, and Heather. And the Wendorf's missing blue explorer was also on that list. Heather had been crying on the road when she learned what had happened to her parents.
Charity was instructed by Rod to keep Heather calm as they left Florida. There were other indications inside that Ford Explorer of what had happened to her parents as well. She noticed her mother's pearl necklace. I mean, it was taken from the house, and now Rod was seen with it. The group also had her father's discovery credit card, which they used while traveling to purchase gasoline and a knife as well. Now whatever plans these teenagers had made before leaving Kentucky, they were now traveling in a murdered couple's stolen vehicle and financing at least part of their escape with property taken from the Wendorf home. And of course, Heather, who lived there and had her family murdered, was noticing. They continued westward towards New Orleans, apparently still hoping that they could disappear into the city and establish the new life with Rod and how he had been describing it. But the reality of traveling with five people and very little money quickly began interfering with that idea.
The resources were extremely limited. They were carrying stolen property, and the explorer itself was becoming increasingly dangerous to use as word of the murders were spreading very quickly. Police had circulated a bee on the lookout warning for this blue Ford Explorer, identifying it as the vehicle taken from the scene of a double homicide in Florida. The group nevertheless did make it to New Orleans, but their time there was rather brief. Accounts of the trip described the teenagers wandering through parts of the city before charity became frightened and uncomfortable with their surroundings. So rather than remain there, they continued on to Baton Rouge, where they rented a motel room. And by this point, the practical problem that followed them throughout the trip was becoming impossible to ignore. They were running out of money. Meanwhile, investigators in Florida were working outwards from Eustace. The identities of the missing teenagers and the vehicles were known and warrants were
issued, but at this stage, police still had unresolved questions about Heather's position in this case, whether she should be regarded solely as a runaway or potentially as someone involved in what had happened to her parents and their death. And it was around then when everyone knew the teenagers were wanted, that they soon began contacting people they knew. Rod phoned his grandfather, Harold Gibson, and told him that he missed him. Now Harold reportedly urged Rod to surrender at which point Rod hung up and ended the call. Then a more important phone call came on Thanksgiving Day, November 28th, when charity contacted her family in South Dakota because the group needed money. Charity spoke to her grandmother Joyce and told her that she was with Rod and that she was all right. Joyce could hear other people in the background talking and laughing while charity repeatedly told someone to stop bothering her. She also thought her granddaughter sounded tired and toxicated or otherwise impaired, but
charity told her that the group was somewhere in Louisiana and that they needed money. So rather than simply sending it, her mother contacted authorities and told them about the call. From there, a plan was put together to determine exactly where the teenagers were when charity called again. She was told to find a motel where the group could stay and have the motel clerk call her mother directly to arrange payment for the room. Charity agreed, apparently unaware that in by doing so, she'd be revealing the exact location of where they were staying. Now once the call came from motel, authorities finally had something much more useful than simply knowing the group was somewhere in Louisiana. They had a specific location in Baton Rouge where the five teenagers were staying. This really shows their age right here, hey? It really does. Officers began watching the area for the group and for the blue Ford Explorer taken from the Wendorf home. And after three days on the run and hundreds of miles from Eustace, Rod Scott, charity,
Dana and Heather had a knowingly set a trap for themselves. And it didn't take long because on November 28th, officers spotted the explorers sitting in the North Parking Lot of a Howard Johnston's hotel. At approximately 1030, officers found members of the group near the vehicle. They checked the explorer's license plate, confirmed it was the one that they were looking for from the Wendorf home. And one of the first officers on the scene was James Wellborne, who immediately began paying attention to the teenager's behavior as police spoke with him. Other appeared nervous, frightened and even shaky while the others members of the group repeatedly looked towards Rod whenever officers asked them any sort of questions they seemed unsure how to respond. To officer Wellborne, this behavior made it clear that Rod was the person the others looked to for direction. Now the encounter didn't become violent, but all five teenagers were arrested and taken into custody before being transported to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Following the drive, Rod apparently wanted to talk. He repeatedly told the officer transporting him that he would tell him everything and even claimed that what he had to say would make the officer famous. The officer told Rod to stop talking and read him his rights for a second time and continued on to the police station. Now at the station, the teenagers were separated so detectives could begin interviewing them individually. And once those interviews began, the story the group had carried out in Florida all started coming apart, though detectives right away began getting substantially different versions of the same events. Now, Rod initially attempted to control the narrative of the story, but before long he was flat out describing the murders himself. He admitted to approaching Richard Wendorf with a crowbar and repeatedly striking him in the head and he even described the attack with disturbing enthusiasm, telling investigators,
quote, I just kept beating him and beating him and beating him and beating him, taking pleasure in it. End quote. Yeah, he said beating him four times. Geez. Okay. That is really messed up. He has. So he is like proud of this. He is. He also described the experience as quote a rush. Wow. Yeah. While taking Richard's life, basically comparing this, he compared it to becoming a god for a moment. I don't have the exact quote on that one, but allegedly he compared it to becoming a god for a moment. That's how he felt. And this is even after he's been traveling with the daughter who's been upset. Correct. About this happening. Correct. Okay. Not only has he been traveled, well, sorry, he murdered, then traveled with her, she's upset. And then he's saying this. So he knew Heather for a long time as well. So he was talking on the phone with their considerable amounts of time while he was, you know, in Kentucky and she's in Florida.
So they had a relationship prior to this. Yeah. So he has some understanding at the very least of what, who these people are, whether he met them before or not. And then he understands, you know, what his actions did because it upset her so much after the fact and still through it all, he doesn't give it a, give a single fuck. He took pleasure in it, described it as a rush and akin to becoming a god for a minute. Because just to clarify to like Heather, she, she for real didn't want this. Or are we going to be getting to that? We will get to that. Okay. There's some apparent discrepancies in that. Okay. It's up for debate. Let's put it that way. Yeah. Because I'm kind of sitting here because we've done stories before where, you know, they have one and the parents to die. Yes. So I'm like, is was she really convincing and true to her word that she did not want this to happen? But yeah, we can wait and we're here. We have to say about that. We will talk about it.
Don't worry. Now, Rod's accounts of Ruth's death was more self-serving saying he intended to leave her alive, of course. But he said that she encountered him in a kitchen through the hot coffee and started scratching her clawing at his face. So he responded by attacking her with the crowbar. Now, whatever preceded the attack itself, the physical evidence showed that Ruth was struck repeatedly with extraordinary and excessive force. Her skull was fractured. Her brain was lacerated. Her brainstem was severed and an injury of, an injury was capable of causing death basically, almost immediately is what that was. But he still kept going. Her brains were on the fucking floor. It was a massive overkill for both of them. It was. Richard, of course, had similar situation. He suffered skull fractures, brain lacerations, but unlike Ruth, though he had no defensive wounds, supporting the conclusion that he had been unaware of the attack when the first blow landed. And the more detailed examination of the body's demonstrated just how sustained the attack
had been, including Richard suffering the 22 separate wounds while Ruth suffered 23, as well as having trying to defend herself with defensive wounds. Now, blood pattern evidence examined by Dr. Laura Hare also showed cast off, consistent with Ruth continuing to be struck while she was down in her attacker positioned above her, again showing the excessive extent of the attack. Then Richard had the small burns arranged on him. The unusual V-shaped pattern with the dots associated with Rod's vampire identity. Now Scott's interrogation filled in another important part of the story. He initially minimized what he had known prior to going to that house. But eventually, he admitted that killing Richard and Ruth had been discussed before he and Rod entered. When asked whether his intention was to assist Rod, Scott answered that the intention was in fact to do so.
And the division of responsibilities was decided beforehand. Rod would go after Richard, Scott would go after Ruth. In fact, immediately before entering, Rod asked Scott how he had a problem with quote, taking these people out. And Scott said that he didn't. Once inside, however, Scott watched Rod's strike Richard and he immediately abandoned his intended role. But when I saw him make the first blow, I knew I couldn't. So Scott had knowingly entered the Wendorf home as part of a plan, including killing two people. But the available physical evidence and statements attributed the fatal attacks themselves to Rod and Rod alone. Scott admitted, disabling the telephone inside the home and his presence in prior agreement made him far more than an unsuspecting witness. But he maintained, he froze once the violence actually began.

Now during questioning of charity and Dana, they provided another perspective on the planning of the whole murder as well. They both described Rod talking about killing the Wendorf's before the murder occurred.
Dana said the subject came up repeatedly during the trip south, while charity described Rod telling them that he intended to kill Heather's parents and instructing them not to tell Heather. Their accounts also indicated that neither of them wanted Richard and Ruth killed, and that attempts had actually been made to discourage Rod, although they still continue traveling with him and helped remove Heather from the immediate area, while Rod and Scott remained behind. Now Heather's interview became more complicated, because other witnesses had already described statements that she had allegedly made about wanting her parents dead, and this is what you were asking about earlier. Friends recalled hearing Heather saying she wanted them gone, and one witness described reading a letter expressing a similar sentiment. Heather's school witnessed Heather saying after an argument that she wanted her parents dead, and those statements were very significant, but they existed alongside Heather's own account of a much more immediate conversation with Rod on the afternoon of the murders.
Heather said Rod had asked her after school whether she wanted her parents' quote dead or alive, and her answer she insisted was alive, she told investigators that she had specifically warned him, quote, don't even go near my parents end quote, and she said she wanted Richard and Ruth left alone. Heather acknowledged knowing that Rod talked about killing people, and claimed he had even killed people before, but she said she just assumed he was simply talking, telling fictional and fantasy stories. The competing statements that were surrounding Heather would become a major question in this case, but her presence away from the house during the murder, while that on the other hand was not disputed. That's a fact. By this point, investigators also had evidence that Rod's violence in Florida had not appeared from nowhere. Authorities in Kentucky connected him, of course, to the Murray, Calloway County, Animal
Shelter Case, while people close to him described the earlier killings of a kitten, the repeated violent threats and months of increasingly violent behavior too. The vampire identity surrounding Rod made the case sensational, but the evidence emerging from the interrogations pointed towards a much more practical element. Scott's car was unreliable. The group wanted to reach New Orleans, and witnesses in Eustace heard Rod say before the murders occurred that he intended to take their Ford Explorer. He intended to kill Richard and Ruth simply because he needed a vehicle. Within days of the murders, police therefore had something far more substantial than a story about teenagers who drank blood and called themselves vampires. They had Rod's confession, Scott's admission, and the killings had been planned before even entering the house. Statements from charity and Dana describing advanced discussion of murder, witnesses who had heard Rod announce his intentions in Eustace and physical evidence consistent with the brutal
attacks he had described. The question was no longer whether Richard and Ruth Wendorf had been murdered by members of the group. It was how the law would treat each of the five teenagers who had left Eustace together. Following their arrest in Louisiana, the five teenagers were returned to Florida. A prosecutor's didn't treat all of them alike. Wendorf had initially been detained under a juvenile murder charge, and witnesses had described statements in which she allegedly wished her parents were dead. Against that was Heather's recorded instance that she had specifically told Rod not to hurt them though, along with the fact that she had been away from the house when the murders occurred. State attorney Brad King eventually acknowledged that prosecutors could not prove Heather knew her parents were going to be harmed. Her case went before two grand juries, but neither of them returned with an indictment, meaning Heather was therefore never prosecuted for the murder of her parents Richard and Ruth.
The other four in the other hand faced criminal consequences. Charity Kisee and Dana Cooper, neither of whom had entered the Wendorf home during the killings, were both convicted in 1998 of two counts of third degree murder, along with armed robbery and burglary charges. Charity received 10 and a half years in prison, while Dana received 17 and a half years. Howard Scott Anderson, who was in interrogation, established that he had entered the house intending to participate in the murder before freezing when Rod attacked Richard, pleaded guilty in 1998 and received a life sentence behind bars. Though his punishment was eventually reconsidered under changes in the law governing sentences imposing for crimes committed by juveniles, and in 2018 his life sentence was reduced to 40 years. Rod's case reached court in February of 1998 when he was 17 years old.
On February 12, shortly after proceedings began, he abandoned his initial attempt to contest his guilt and entered guilty pleas without a negotiated sentence agreement. He admitted to two counts of first degree murder, armed burglary and armed robbery, leaving the court to determine whether he would spend the rest of his life in prison or if you would be sentenced to death. Rod unfortunately shifted the focus almost entirely onto Rod himself, and his defense began presenting the unstable childhood that he had, the one that was surrounding him long before the murders, including his absent father, his mother's drug and alcohol use, and allegations that Rod had suffered sexual assault and rape when he was a young child, though there was never any criminal charges over any of those claims and they remained purely speculative. So health evidence was similarly complicated. A defense psychologist believed Rod had been experiencing an extreme mental or emotional
disturbance at the time of the murders and described the vampire clan as providing structure, family and even a father figure that Rod had lacked elsewhere in his life. The psychologist did not, however, testify that Rod was incapable of understanding his actions, and under cross examination he agreed that Rod knew right from wrong when he entered that window of home. But he maintained that Rod's psychological state had significantly been impaired with his judgment and his ability to make rational decisions. Prosecutors however argued that whatever difficulties Rod had experienced, the murders themselves demonstrated planning and conscious decision making. He had discussed killing Richard and Ruth before entering the home. He obtained the crowbar. He attacked Richard without warning and after which he then killed Ruth when she encountered him. Then he searched the house, stole property, and escaped in the family's Ford Explorer.
Even his own statements about enjoying the violence and feeling a rush while taking a life also became difficult evidence for the defense to overcome. Ultimately, the jury unanimously voted 12 to 0 on their decision. They recommended the death penalty. Circuit judge Jerry T. Lockett agreed and sentenced Rod to death, making the 17 year old one of the youngest prisoners on Florida's death row. However, Rod would not remain under death sentence though. In the year 2000, the Florida Supreme Court reduced his punishment to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole because he had only been 16 when Richard and Ruth were murdered. It was even a change that came years before the United States Supreme Court's 2005 decision prohibiting execution for crimes committed by juveniles. But changes in juvenile sentence law did eventually give Rod another opportunity to argue that
he should someday actually be released. Having a 2019 resentencing hearing and now approaching 40 years old, Rod and his defense team presented evidence of his behavior during more than two decades behind bars, including educational and reentry programs and vocational accomplishments. Rod also apologized to the Wendor family, telling them that he understood nothing he could say or do would bring Richard and Ruth back. But the court wasn't persuaded that his development in prison outweighed the circumstances of the murders or concerns about his credibility. Circuit judge G. Richard Singletary examined Rod's changing explanations over the years, including unsupported claims about enormous quantities of drugs immediately before the murders. And later versions that shifted responsibility towards Scott or portrayed the trip as an attempt to rescue Heather.
And he found those accounts inconsistent with other evidence, particularly testimony that Rod had discussed killing the Wendorfs to obtain their Ford Explorer before he entered their home. So in April of the year 2020, Judge Singletary upheld Rod's life without parole sentence, finding him irreputably corrupt in the judge's words. And so Rod would remain in prison for the murders he committed at 16. Ultimately, the mythology surrounding the case has lasted for decades at this point. Vampires, blood drinking, cemeteries, ritual markings, animal sacrifices, and a teenager calling himself Vassago, a century old vampire. Those details were very real parts of Rod's world, but they can also overwhelm the much simpler reality of what happened on November 25, 1996.
Richard Wendorf was resting on the couch, and Ruth Wendorf was inside her own home when the two teenagers entered their garage because they wanted the family's vehicle. Both Richard and Ruth were subsequently beaten to death. Their property was taken, and their 17-year-old daughter came home from work to find them. And whatever name Rod gave himself, Richard and Ruth Wendorf were the only reason his name ever became known at all. And that's the story of the vampire clan murders. Those were some harsh, harsh sentences. They were. And rightfully fucking so. I kind of like them. Yes. But I was also sitting there a little shook by them too. How so? In what way? Well, first of all, I do think it's... I feel like Heather got off really lucky, to be honest.
She did, but I genuinely believe she had no idea on the murder of her own family. I genuinely do. Don't get me wrong. She may have actually said, oh, I want my parents dead. I wish to go or leave whatever. She might have said that. Which a lot of kids do. A lot of kids do. Yeah. But still, I don't know. I guess I'm just surprised that, yeah, she got off completely scoff-free, but I guess she also didn't because she has to live with the fact of her parents getting have been murdered for the rest of her life, right? Exactly. It would be very hard. That's a sentence in itself. And I guess I'm a... The gals got more than I thought they would of, the two girls. And then, and Scott as well. That was his name, right, Scott? Yeah. Well, he entered the home intending to kill, witness the kill, helped kind of rob after the fact. I guess. And left didn't contact police for three days. The girls took Heather away from the home knowing what Rod was talking about doing intending
to do, whether they believed him or not. They took Heather away so he could have whatever time alone that he wanted to. And then they also came back and left in the Ford Explorer as well. Yeah. Well, I do think Rod, like, yeah, he... I mean, getting the death sentence at doing a crime when you're 16 was like, holy frick. But like, yeah, he definitely deserves to be in forever. But then, I don't... Yeah, you got to think that these... They were all like really young, their kids. So I don't know. And we've done other cases where people are adults and have done terrible things and get less time than some of that, that they are. So I'm just a bit surprised. Well, I think what they got is just... Oh. And I think some of these cases we've done where these adults commit these crimes that are lesser than, or sorry, more than, and they get a lesser sentence, I think is bullshit. So the justice system has gone soft. Well, I think it really has, if I'm honest, yes. Yeah. But that's not to say that it hasn't been soft in other cases of that era or earlier as well.
Because it certainly has been. Yeah. And don't get me wrong. Like, yeah, these are deserving sentences, but I've just comparatively to other things we've gone over and talked about. I was kind of like, holy fuck. This is good. It is good. What's happening here? We need more like this. We need more sentences and more just do like this. Yes. I do have to say, I do not think the death sentence should be handed out to someone who committed a crime at 16, though. So I do think that's probably good. That one got overturned because that's a bit much. I'm thinking. I don't know if I have an opinion on that one. I haven't thought about it hard enough for someone underage. I do understand the severity of what he committed. But I do also understand of your brains not even fully developed yet. But also at the same time, it's like, well, if his brain's not fully developed, what could he turn to? What could he become if he did develop? What would he do?
Well, and I think, okay, I think the other reason why I'm finding those sentences a bit harsh to is because they were, though other three individuals were like quite manipulated by him, right? Yeah. So and lots of times that seems people take that into account. But in which way were they manipulated? Well, he was kind of, I don't know, I almost in my brain, maybe I'm totally wrong here. I kind of like have him being on a pedestal to these people, these other kids, almost like he's like a cult leader in a sense and like they're really, they themselves maybe are outcasts and he's giving them what they want or something, you know, like this family, this group, this friendship. So in my, in my thought, I guess they could, they were a little bit manipulated by him. For sure. But you have to sit here and so what you're saying is like they're young, he's young, but he's manipulating them and they should be somewhat like a count of bill or a little less accountability. Some leniency because of that, I guess.
But what sort of manipulation does he have over them if he too is a child? One of them in fact is 19 when he's 16. One of those girls was 19 years old, three years older than him. Yeah. And age holds a lot when you're that young too. But I mean, just think about you as an adult looking up to another adult. So they're teenagers looking up to another teenager. Yes, but as an adult, you should know better. Well, yeah. So they didn't know better. And neither did he. So how many manipulation, how much manipulation could there be instilled if he also doesn't know better? That's all I'm saying. Yeah. I don't know if I'm portraying my words right here, but he's how, how much of a messiah, a cult leader, how much manipulation could he have really had? He wasn't scaring them. He wasn't doing anything to physically abuse them. They were a close knit group of friends who were, did say she was afraid, right?
Yeah, once her parents were dead. Yeah. So they were a close knit group who relied on each other. He might have been like the leader of them sure, but they were all just as culpable in my mind, in my mind. Like they could have easily gotten themselves out of that situation basically is what you're thinking. Yeah. And they're like, you're just a useless, inviting other of Heather's friends to go to. And they're like, no, I'm good. Yeah. They could have done the exact same thing. A lot. Yeah. A lot of people did turn them down. Gosh. So I do get what you're saying. But the problem, the problem with it that I see is there's too many ways out. If they just stop for a second, they don't have to do any of this. It's full voluntary action. It's not like they're isolated. It's not like they're being physically abused in any way. And he's 16 himself. How manipulative could he be? I mean, maybe I'm being a little bit redundant in saying that because there are children
and young kids who are psychos who are extremely manipulative. Well, I am being naive by saying that. But he could also, like, I mean, these people are like joined in quotation by blood. So he could be using that against them too, right? Like, I don't know. The whole thing is just so in my brain, just far fetched. Just this is just shit that I can't comprehend happens. I gotcha. No, you're right. And a lot of the things I'm saying, it's not because like you're wrong or anything. I'm just trying to play devil's advocate. But I don't, when I look at this personally, I don't see Rod as being manipulative. I see him as someone who likes the attention and the attention that he's receiving makes him do more. So in fact, if anything, I think he's being manipulated by those who are following him. Because it gives him a sense of superiority, or feeling of being a God is sort of what
he said when he killed Richard. He's getting this sense of air of I'm untouchable. I have these people who are relying on me. So he goes farther because of that. I don't know. I think it's a situation of feeding off each other in a sense, but he also is very evil. Oh, no, you're 100%. You're 100%. He didn't even have a taints of remorse. No, 100%. After what he did there. He is the biggest piece of shit in the story for sure. At least Scott went in that situation and was like, nope, nope. You're right. And it fueled Rod. Definitely. Well, we talked in part one about the psychologist who was breaking through on role-playing games. When someone actually commits a horrible act according to their fantasy role-playing, it's not because the role-playing induced it. It's because something was already there. The fantasy role-playing just gave him a medium to put that energy into to commit the
act, which is the whole satanic panic thing back in the 70s and 80s and even early 90s of Dungeons and Dragons. But it's because he was already capable of it. He might have been thinking he was some fucking 500-year-old vampire looking at these people following him. But that's not what made him kill. It's only because it gave him a reason to kill. Yeah. I would be very interesting to sit down and interview him now when he is in his 40s or whatever. Yeah. You should see a picture of this guy. He looks scary. Does he? Yes, he does. I mean, now being like 40 years old, yeah. He's a scrawny little guy, but you look at him. He still looks slightly evil. Oh, he looks evil as fuck. He looks like a killer in a fucking horror film. So I'm swearing lots right now. Yeah, he kind of does.
Yeah. Okay, even, I feel like just if you're walking down the street and past him, I would just get the heebie-gbie, so I'm just... Right. Yeah. And there he is back in 1998. He's got that same like... His eyes, yeah. There's something cold and that crooked fucking grin he has. It's scary. Yeah. Anyways. Anyway, we'll leave it at that. Yes. Um, spelling? Well, they are spelled differently, but no. While both are ways to access your home's equity, they're very different. You see, a HELOC comes with monthly payments. Boo! While a splotero H.E.I. doesn't, it's essentially a smarter way to access your home's value. You get cash up front and then you can repurchase your option when you cash settle, refinance or sell. Hooray! Are you going to cheer through this whole explanation? Yes! Excellent. A HELOC has strict income and credit requirements. Boo! Hiss! While an H.E.I. from Splotero is open to people with homes that are worth $200,000 and have a 500 minimum credit score. And there's no income requirement. Huzzah! Did you say Huzzah? I'm trying to bring it back. Well, good luck to you. Visit spltitiro.com today and access your home's equity. No monthly payments, just cash and hand. Splotero.
