Toronto Police Open Fourth Safety Hub | Toronto News

0:00Toronto police just opened their fourth community safety hub this time at Defer and Mall. Think of it as a chill spot, not a police station where folks can connect with officers. The main focus is on preventing crime, especially scams and theft and looking out for seniors and young people. It's all about getting officers out there. Understanding what's happening on the ground and building trust. This hyper-local approach is designed to make policing more effective by tailoring it to specific neighborhoods. Deputy Chief Lauren Pogue mentioned that having officers visible and engaged in places like Defer and Mall is a proactive way to boost safety. It's about building partnerships and creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable, working together to address concerns and keep the community safe. The hub is set up right near the busy food court and will be staffed by neighborhood community officers with support from other units. This isn't the first one either. Toronto police already have similar hubs at Fairview Mall, shops at Don Mills and in Lawrence

1:02Heights. These spots offer an alternative to going to a traditional police station for certain issues. And the results from the other hubs are pretty impressive. Superintendent Andrew Ecklin reported significant drops in crime at Fairview and Don Mills. For example, auto thefts were down 65% at Fairview and assaults were down 100% at Don Mills. The offers in the area seem to think it's a great idea, hoping it will make the mall a safer place. While these hubs will be staffed daily, they aren't a 24 hour operation. For any urgent situations, people are still reminded to call 911. That's your update from Toronto News Today, powered by AI. I'm Corey with the story.
