بدأت المولات في فرنسا بالتزامن مع إعادة تخطيط باريس في عهد نايليون الثالث. واستبدلت المولات الشكل الاعتيادي للأسواق الكلاسيكية، إذ أن التصميم المعماري للمولات حينها عمل على تعزيز سلوكيات الشراء عن الزبائن. بحيث يلعب على العلاقة بين علم النفس والتصميم المعماري الملائم للطبائع السلوكية البشرية. وارتبطت تجربة المولات بفترة خروج النساء من حجاب المنازل إلى الفضاء العام. وتمثل مولات باريس في تلك الحقبة نواة المول الذي نعرفه اليوم كجزء من سوكنا المجتمعي المألوف.
