なぜ、『昭和二十年』書こうと考えたのか。多くの人々が命を奪われ、多くの人々が自らの命を断った年である。親は子に先立たれ、妻は夫を奪われ、子は親を失い、親と子が死んだ年である。そのような年は他にはない。その年はどういう年だったかを探ろうとした
鳥居 民（とりい たみ、男性、１９２９年（昭和４年） – ２０１３年（平成２５年）１月４日）は、日本の歴史作家・評論家。
鳥居民は昭和２０年の１月１日から７月２日までを書いた。１９８５年の５６歳から、２０１２年の８３歳までという長い時間をかけて｢昭和二十年」を執念深く追い続けた。そして２０１３年１月４日に心筋梗塞で８４歳で死去し、この大著はついに未完に終わった。鳥居の戦死ともいうべき人生を眺めると、ライフワークと寿命との関係を考えさせられる。
