笠智衆自身の自己診断は「下手、不器用、素質もなく、要領も悪い」である。その笠を五所平之助、木下恵介、岡本喜八、山田洋次、小津安二郎ら巨匠がよく使った。地道な努力の積み重ねが、次第に薄皮をまとうことになり、いつかその衣を人が気づいてくれるということなのであろう。笠智衆は日本最高の老け役となって私たちのまぶたに生き続けている。
