The war between the United States and Iran is putting Japan and South Korea on high alert.

The U.S. is pulling military assets from bases in both countries to bolster its efforts

in the Middle East.

That includes parts of the Thad and Patriot missile defense systems from South Korea

plus around 2,500 Marines from Japan.

Here this week, President Donald Trump asked allies like Japan and South Korea to send

warships to the strait of Hormuz.

The request, even though later pulled back, triggered protests outside the U.S. Embassy

in Seoul.

Demonstrators rejected both the war and any involvement from their nations.

People in the region are voicing real fears.

Folks in South Korea and Japan worry they're now more exposed, squeeze between threats from

North Korea, China, and Russia.

One resident put it simply.

With fewer U.S. forces around, their bases could become targets.

South Korea's president Lee Jae-mi-ung has stepped in to calm nerves, saying the country

can still handle North Korea on its own.

But tension spiked when North Korea launched 10 ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan

right after joint drills with the U.S.

Japan's Prime Minister, Sanae Takaiichi, faces a tough spot during her White House visit

with Trump this week.
