Thank you very much, Curtis. We do appreciate it. Chiefs win and win big 3110, the final score for the Kansas City Chiefs and this one. What impressed you the most, Sam? What was the biggest thing that jumped at you? But they won without Patrick Holmes playing well. And I mean, it's been a long time since that was a path to one of their victories. I wrote about this after the game, but he started 2 for 12. And the Chiefs have never had a quarterback start 2 for 12 and then they go on to win the game. Their leading wider see were had 19 yards in this game. Like this was not an A plus grade from their passing offense in particular. I mean, this was closer to an F, I think, that an A plus for the passing offense and they just beat a team that was on the doorstep of the Super Bowl. They blew the doors off of a team that was on the doorstep of the Super Bowl last year. Yeah, Jeff, what jumped at you? What was the most impressive? I thought it was a defense, the honest one. I know, Ken, Walker is the easy place to go. But I think we expected him to be a factor.

We all picked in to be our offensive player in the year for the team, but the way the defense played from the jump from the first play. They were aggressive. They were one step ahead. I said this on the radio this morning. Just to even say John, it felt like Davis Webb, my loose his job, I bid season if he keeps that kind of performance up because I felt like he can do nothing. List East Bay Nolo's defense. And so all those new faces, a lot of guys shine early. You get Mansour Delaney, even though he got knocked out of the game, getting a pick on the first drive and the pressure in the quarter back, everything that we didn't know we were going to see. We saw even FAU, it was making plays out there. So what to be like about what they did over there. Yeah, defense pass rush for sure. I think a lot of people would say Ken, it's Walker the way he ran was the most impressive. The offensive line playing, Kalo Benson, the way he performed being thrown out there. I mean, I'll go with the personnel just overall. Like you said, FAU finally gets healthy and gets a chance to get out there.

He makes an impact. Armason Thomas gets a sack in this game. Peter Woods was disruptive on the inside. Mansour Delaney, you mentioned with the interception. Yeah, I think, you know, Emmett Johnson was good when he carried the football and showed what he had been showing in the preseason and a training camp. And so overall, Christian Fulton had moments in the secondary. I know he didn't have a very good camp, but that's a guy who's been maligned for being hurt, rightfully so he has been hurt a lot, but he had moments in the secondary when Mansour Lane went down. They didn't really seem to lose anything back in that defensive backfield. Yeah, I mean, I think personnel showed up. I mean, I think you mentioned coaching. I mean, there was a lot to like if you're a Kansas City cheese fan and how this game went. And I like the way Sam put it. I mean, it was after that first touchdown drive for the Denver Broncos, it was pretty much domination. The second half was really domination. So they allowed the fewest yards of any team to lead this week. This was an offensive week in the NFL.

The Broncos were the exception to the rule, not part of what's been for the last few years. We've talked in September about offensive footballs down, like what's going on? What's going on with the coverage is how can't, you know, it's been years now, why can't offensive coordinators figure this out? Deepest of coordinators always seem to be ahead. It's an offensive week and the chiefs absolutely shut the Broncos down. Yeah, and I think even beyond that, I think it was the 41 points were exactly what they needed to get for it to be the most offensive first week in the NFL history. So they land on that exact number to send it over the top. So it wasn't offensive week and then they played great defense. It was an offensive week where they ran the ball well. They had some positivity in the passing attack, but you Sam said earlier, Patrick Holmes would be closer to an F than an A. The passing offense. You got to include the wider sewers in that. Okay, let's we know. Yeah, so let's throw some more guys under the bus while we're at it. We'll back up and finish the job.

What do you put on Patrick Mahomes though, grade wise? Well, I think that it's tough because I don't view this as like, Patrick Mahomes having a bad night. I view this as part of his process. This podcast has talked frequently about the difference in Patrick Mahomes being on the field versus Patrick Mahomes being Patrick Mahomes that there's a gap there. We saw that gap last night. Like just because he's back on the field, doesn't mean he's just gonna start getting back to himself the minute he throws a football. He talked about overstriving, which causes his passes to dive. He thought he was rushing his reads. Well, guess what? You had a lot more to read than you have in training camp. Now, I will say that the blitz he read that he picked up immediately and threw to Travis Kelsey for that long play was a great read. And it was similar to a blitz that he saw in the fourth quarter in Denver last year where he was sacked on the play and didn't have a way to go. Part of that is playing, part of that is him seeing it. But it's a reminder that this is going to be a process.

This isn't going to just be a flip the switch. Patrick Mahomes is back and he's closer because he's gonna be feel better on Sunday night against the Colts than he felt Monday night against the Broncos. He'll feel better in Miami than he does Sunday night against the Colts. But I still think we're going to be in October before we're talking about him feeling like himself again. He went 15 to 27 for 184, two touchdowns and an interception that clearly he was not on the same page with the receiver Jeff. He did run it seven times for 23 yards and a touchdown. At one point, and I'm stealing these numbers from Sam. The sound did right today, but I know Sam got him right. He pointed out that he was two for 12 at one point of the day. What kind of letter grade are you throwing out there for? For Pat? Oh, at C minus and Sam said that that is probably to be expected. Yeah, to be expected. I don't think I did not expect to know what will go out there and set the world on fire. And I think anybody who is this season

is going to be harmed the world on fire because what Sam just said, it's going to take him a long time to get comfortable doing these things again. And last night, probably the best case scenario. You have the run game clicking, you have your defense all over the broccoli's offense. And so you have a lot of comfort level to play with and he still was struggling to complete passes. I remember the one and two behind Kelsey, distinctly on that crossing or out where Kelsey was like, where should I ball it? But that's what happens. You get sped up. You're playing behind offensive line and you're seeing real defenders come at you and you're going to move a tick faster. You're going to be more mindful of that injury and not getting a hurt again. And that's, and the receivers again, I think that will be interesting to watch moving forward is how much teams now are going to begin to gang up on the run game and say, let's see if they can beat us with the pass. Which you would never would think that would be the case. The Patrick Mahomes in this offense. But I think the Broncos were still having a hard time comprehending that. And, but I think other team will realize

that Kenneth Walker needs to be stopped first if you want to deal with this team. Is that the plan? Is that the ideal situation in the Chiefs though? Like that's the whole purpose of revitalizing your running game of adding Kenneth Walker. I know this isn't a contrast to what you're saying, Jeff. It's an addition to it is like, that's what the Chiefs want. They want to force a team to play the run against them so that they can finally use the passing game that has been stale for the last two seasons. But one of the reasons it's look stale is because the running game has been stale and everything has just been a defense. After defense has been focused on stopping the passing game. And so if team wants to load up against the run, I think the Chiefs would say, well, I think they would welcome it and say, go for it. We can finally maybe take a couple shots down feel because they didn't do that last night. Yeah, the running game was very impressive. And, you know, Sam, you pointed out today when we were talking on the radio show about that this was, you know, exactly what they wanted to do. Take the pressure off Patrick Mahomes.

Andy Reed clearly knew that, you know, just, you know, jump on the bike and go a million miles an hour. And I think a lot of us, myself included, we're like, boy, if anybody could come back and just, oh, 475 yards in his first game and five touchdowns. Like, would I have fallen out of my chair? No, I would have been surprised. I mean, I thought there'd be rust that he'd need to kick off. But I think to me, the most impressive thing is just, you know, I think Denver had to figure that they wanted to do this, right? And they still did it, right? Jeff, I mean, like, if you're Denver, I don't think, you know, you saw enough of them in preseason to see him getting under center. You saw what they invested in Kenneth Walker. You saw that they drafted Emma Johnson. You saw they picked up a fullback off waivers and threw him onto the practice squad late in the process. They drafted a defensive lineman and signed a defensive lineman that both played fullbacks in situations offensively at their last stop. Well, you had to get a feeling that, okay, this team wants to run the ball. And so Denver had to know that that was going to be

a big point of emphasis as big as it was. No, they still couldn't stop it. I mean, that to me is what is impressive. Yes, we're surprised that they have 220 plus yards rushing in this, but Denver shouldn't have been, it's not like, oh my God, we had no idea this would happen in the Chiefs for still effective. That that has to be impressive, doesn't it? It is. I think what was most impressive on that front was just the Chiefs commitment to it. And so we've had this conversation before. It's like, okay, are they going to run it two, three times and throw it? We're in four or five times and then throw it six or seven times. Are they that first couple of drives? It was like, we're handing it off. We're going to keep handing it off. And so that's at the tone. But part of me feels like Denver and the way they defended the run, it was as if it was still 2025 and it was as they have a check-o and cream hunt back there. Because that's specifically the fourth and one play with Kenneth Wopper scored and the way Rodney and Moss defended it. He didn't attack the play. He was kind of like, let me see what's happening. And maybe that's because you're used to seeing a lesser back

in the back than that situation. And also you have to consider this too. It's like, if you're trying to scout the Chiefs, like they're running a place they've never ran before. How do you know what they're going to run? What the key on? They never had a kind of walker in the backfield since this group of Rockles had been around. So I think there was an element of surprise to it that went beyond just knowing they were going to run. They didn't know a lot of things from formation, as the plays, to the back. I think that makes a difference. The Broncos absolutely defended the run in a way that teams did not against the Chiefs last year. I mean, the Broncos had the third highest rate of playing stacked boxes of any team in week one. That the Chiefs hardly ever, that the Chiefs a year ago faced the most light boxes in the league. Like they should have been able to run the ball successfully. And this year, I think it's more impressive to have the 200 Russian artists and for a back to have 173 against the defense that they just played,

even though the Broncos were always better against the pass and they were against the run, but against that formation of defense that they just played that it would have been last year. It was set up for them to have a game running the ball. Like this Lashir team for begging them to have a game like this last year, and they still couldn't complete it. That's why even like, I kept saying, and I would disagree with Jeff on on this one point, which is I'm still more impressed with the talent in the scheme than the commitment to it. Like you always had to be more effective on a per-play basis no matter how many plays you were gonna run. Yeah. It's easy to stick with it when it's working. Like last night was easy to come into the run. It was working like crazy. Yeah. I'll say, you know, the first time, this is how it went. Run for two yards, run for five, run for one, and then they run for three more, right? So they didn't, you know, they'd run the ball three times and it got what,

eight yards. So, you know, there's, it wasn't like he was 20, 17, 16. I think there was a bit of a commitment there. I think we should... Well, then they ran on four times. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm like, you know, that is, I think all of it. I mean, I think the talent was there. They wore them down. It was a very good game plan, not just for, you know, the fact that Pat was coming back, but because they were playing a left tackle. I mean, Andy Read and Patrick Mahomes both said, both went out of their way and post game to talk about Khalil Benson's run blocking. So, I mean, this was just smart. That's again, like if you're Denver and to Sam's, what was the percentage of stack boxes Denver had? There was 34%, which is the third most in league. That's some of that was, look, one game can be a little bit tricky because there were a lot of short yardage plays for... Yes. There was reasons for beyond just defending the run for the Broncos to line up that way against them. Yeah. And yet they were effective. I mean, listen, they preached, you know,

I think other people, not really Andy Read, talked about a need to use personnel, their interior offensive line, better and run with physicality. They're, well, who they signed said they're going to run the ball. They signed Kenneth Walker and drafted. Emma Johnson, as I said, but I think there was still a little bit of doubt. It's like, well, Andy really do this. We really do it. You know, Eric Mienemey is this Eric Mienemey in his year over Matt Naggy in his year. You know, is that the influence? I mean, I remember Dick Vermeel saying to me about Mike Marx when I talked to him about, hey, you have Marx and he's, you know, he goes, yeah, every now and then, though you got to say to Mike, we've got 28 in the backfield. Like, let's run him. You know, and is that Eric Mienemey's role? It is that, you know, I mean, they had a game plan. I don't think Eric Mienemey was like, Reed was like, okay, we're going to go with this pass. Now let's run it again. Now let's run again. But I mean, the influence that Eric Mienemey has on the week of meetings and saying this will work, that'll work. You know, I think, you know, it clearly had an influence, but this was just smart game planning for what they had with their, with their personnel. But I think it's the game planning that Denver should have seen coming

and they still couldn't stop it. That's what they saw. I think they saw it coming again, like Sam saying, it's just an execution of it. It's the whole thing about what a running game can be demoralizing. It's because you have a, you know, it's coming. Does it mean that you're going to be able to prevent it from happening? Yeah. And so I think even on the short-yarder stuff, Sam has talked a lot about, you know, the loss of, of Kareem Haunt. It looked like we're not going to miss him around here because, yeah, he was walking like very comfortable in those short-yarder situations. I thought his most impressive runs were when he, when he was stuffed and when he was having the final lane to run through, when he was patient behind a lot of scrimmage, when it was a two or three-yard situation to get a first down, he showed a lot of skills that we haven't seen running bags have around here since, since Jamal Charles was running it before. Yeah. And this, I mean, look, this, this game plan was built in last January when Patrick Holmes was texting Brad Veets during the Super Bowl saying, that guy looks pretty good. And Veets, you know, beats everyone to the punch and free agency that she's sort of the first out of the gate in free agency.

And it's to sign Kenneth Walker. I remember, when you were at the combine and to Jeff, you're at the combine, too, we're all sitting in there next to Brett Veets when he's talking about, you know, we got three pretty good interior offensive lineman. I think we ought to, we ought to use those guys. Like this game plan is, you know, installed on, you know, September 14th. This has been the plan for, for a long time to at least have this option, which is why at the top, I said, they've got another way to win a game now. They've got Patrick Holmes and another way to win a game now. Yeah, no, it is. And it's, it's, it's, it's very refreshing. It is also just one game. We'll see what they do to back it up next time out. And if, you know, when somebody goes, okay, this is wholeheartedly what they're going to do. Let's set out, let's set out to try to stop it. And we'll see if Pat can step up in those times. So we want to get into the offense. Is this what it's going to be moving forward concerns with the wide receivers? Let's talk a little bit about what this offense will be moving forward. Sam, should we expect this? Ground and pound. 30 plus carries every week. That'll be the basis of what they're going to be here moving forward. Or do you see some tweaks along the way? Yeah. This is where I think we drop in the credit for the game plan with with Andy Reed and Eric B. The enemy, but specifically Andy Reed because he changed. And how long is he's going to change? You know, what happens when you're losing a game in the third quarter? We haven't seen the cheese in that situation, whether or not they stick with the run when it's not working. It was, like I said, it's easy to stick with the run when it's working. What are you doing? It's not. Are you still setting up your passing game in that way? But the most definitive way, I could figure that it's obvious that they made this change is, last year, the cheese ran 155 RPO runs.

Just rushes. 155 times they ran out of the RPO. That's 9.1 per game. They had two RPO runs in this game. They didn't have any game last year where they only ran the ball twice out of RPO. This was absolutely a different game plan. They were under center more than they were in any game last year. And so, yeah, I mean, you're right. Like the question is, what now? You know, do they stick with it? And I still think that test has yet to come. Yeah. I think one of the things that's interesting is all the AFC West offers a coordinators kind of a tweak. I mean, the fact that Davis Webb was given the play calling duties. First time around, not so good. They bring in Mike McDaniel with the chargers. That was supposed to be the perfect marriage. You know, we're going to see, you know, Hampton start really having success and running the ball and get the most out of, you know, their offense. That didn't really happen. And then Andy Reed went opted for the guy he knows and they come out and score 31 points and pound the rock, protect a quarterback.

That's, you know, a little bit rusty. And as a bad knee, so far, one to zero to zero when it comes to the OC and how the offense work with head coach and offensive coordinator with the chief's compared to the Broncos and chargers, chef, you think this is the kind of style that they're going to play moving forward. I think they wanted to do that. But I do agree with what Sam just said. It's, it probably will depend on the situations they find themselves in. And it is a lot different to keep running the football when you're playing against the guy Josh Allen or a Matthew Stafford or Joe Burrow or things that can go up and down the field against you. I think they're ability to run the football in the way they ran it. This past game came down to two things. I suspect that Andy Reed realized very early that the home was rusty and didn't want to put a lot of pressure on him. So let's stick with the run. Okay, let's not get away from it. The other thing is the defense was playing lights out. And so they didn't have to worry about, they were getting turnovers. They didn't have to worry about having to play

to peak up with somebody else's offense. And so I do think it's going to change from week to week. And I thoroughly believe that it probably this week that teams are going to cut out and say, can the walkers not going to beat us? And then you got to find out when you want to run the play action, when you want to be under center, is your quarterback comfortable with that kind of stuff because there's a lot more. It's different when you take a shotgun snaps and you have a bum knee and you can get a little comfort with that. It's harder when you got to get away from the pocket, make a throw when you saw, you know, I thought the interception was a perfect example of what his offense is right now. They're on the football where it's like, say, everybody ran the wrong adjustment, ball ends up in Brandon Jones's lap. Fortunately, the Broncos didn't, and I'm scoring on that for the chase. But there could be a lot of plays like that happening in the first half of the season because I still question the receivers and I think Maholam showed last night that he needs a lot more work. Go. How much of the struggles offensively are passing wise Sam, where are the whiteouts?

Well, I mean, it's been three and a half year problem now that the cheese cannot get open against the Broncos. And what do the Broncos do? They play tough man to man against the cheese and the cheese right receivers struggle to separate against them. I mean, you go through Rashi Rice, Xavier Worthy, Taikwam Thornton, Cyrus Salon, and Jalen Royals, and they combine for 37 yards between those five guys. That's again, why go back to the top and say, every other year, every other week for the last like five years, that would have led this show and said, how you can't win a game like this. We'd all be saying that, you can't win a game with your white receivers combining for 37 yards. It's why all that matters, if they have another path, but it was also true on Monday they needed another path, because the white receivers, I would have liked to have seen more Cyrus Salon. I know he's still learning the playbook, I know he's green, but he's best against man.

And the Broncos played a lot of man. And the only time Rashi Rice beat man was after the ball was in his hands. Then he can make somebody miss. Tough to separate. And we saw these top two guys not play much in training. Can't both of them were hurt at times. Rashi Rice was slow to get going. He was on a different plan in the rest of the group for the first couple of weeks. I thought you saw the effects of that on Monday. Yeah, I think there's better days I have for the white receivers than I think. You know, you talk about the rookies, like when did Rashi Rice really take off second half? So I think if we're looking for the time. He played. He at least played it like Cyrus Salon didn't play. I don't know if he's gonna take off if he's not playing. He's also not a second round pick. I mean, I know we're bullish on him. I agree with you. I mean, that was the one thing I talked about even off just a Cincinnati tape that how bouncy he was coming off that line that he looks like he's gonna be a tough guy to, to cover that he can get free quickly and early. I like him.

I'm not trying to run him down, but. No, no, I'm not saying as far as that's right now. I'm saying in order for him to have improved in the second half, he's got to play in the first half. That's the only way he's gonna get better as if he gets raps. Yeah, well, or they don't think he knows the offense that he can't trust him. They know the option routes. But then again, I don't think, I mean, let's talk about the the interception. I mean, Jeff, I, I, in Sam, I already know we talked about it today on the show. I think he ran the wrong route. Like he's supposed to cut that in. I mean, Patrick Holmes clearly thought he was gonna take it underneath the safety. And instead he just kept going up the field. And so it looks terrible. It looks like the home, so we're right to a defensive back. But I think it's pretty clear. Is and Xavier worthy going back to the one where he had the big play out was against the Rams and where he stepped out of bounds. He couldn't get two feet in bounds, even though he had 12 yards between him and the sideline. It seemed like when he caught the ball, I mean, he just does not seem to get it. Yeah, well, and things are seeing the same thing

we're talking about, right? I mean, they're all aware of these things. It goes back to last year. And so that's, I mean, I applaud your confidence, but I don't think Richie Rice or Xavier worthy is high-quant, Thornever, that level of confidence at this stage is still early. But applaud who's confidence. Who's confidence? Yeah, sir, I said, I think they're gonna come around. Is that what you just said? I will define, yeah, but I, when you define it, you said it. Exactly. That's what I heard, right? I just heard it, I think. I do think that you will get more, listen, I think the Broncos are a bad match up for the White House. I think Sam is right. I think they do a really good job at taking them out. Yes, I think better days are ahead for Richie Rice. I think Richie Rice will come around. I am not of the camp that Xavier worthy is gonna suddenly emerge as a thousand-yard guy. I don't put it out of the realm of possibility as physical tools, but I'm not predicting it. But I will predict that if Richie Rice stays healthy, I think he will end up being a weapon for this team. Yes, if that's what it is.

Xavier worthy, I don't think he gets it. That was my whole point too. Little Cyrus Allen, I think Cyrus Allen's gonna be something. I think it'll be in the second half of the season. How they get there, whether it's he does more in practice and that gets him into the game more. I don't think he's gonna be, you know, what Richie Rice was in the second half of his rookie year. But Richie Rice is a guy that's gotta come through. He's a guy who's done it, right? And I think he will do it again if he's healthy and over the course of game after game, yes. So if that's how I would define, the receivers will come around. We will see as long as he's healthy, we will see the best of Richie Rice. You could even get the sentence another call. Well, I mean, I think he's healthy. I think he's gonna be okay. But, you know, I think Cyrus Allen is gonna help the team. And I also think the running threat is going to get them open more. I am frankly surprised. I didn't even disappointed that they didn't get open more in this game with how well the chiefs were running the ball.

I also thought some of the ball fake skills of Patrick Holmes could use some work. I don't think he sold the play action really well in a couple of moments. Like, well, that's a half-ass, half-hearted attempt to try me. You gotta sell the sell that you're gonna hand the ball off. And that will help guys bite. So I think he's got some work to do when it comes to trying to help sell the play action. But yeah, it was just some, the wide receivers were very disappointing in this game. And when you run that well, I think you should have expected that you'd have guys more open than what you got. Yeah, and that's what I was gonna say. That when you were running this type of offense, it's built off the run game. It's running through the run game and you're doing a lot more play action off of it, not like the RPO where you're looking and seeing and you're, that's hard on quarterback. It's hard on receivers. It's hard on the timing. It becomes a lot more, lot more critical to what you're doing. And when you're turning your back on a defense when you're play faking, you don't have the luxury of me able to just bounce out to the outside and do all the improvising we've seen my home as do throughout his career.

And so I think a lot of what I saw was just, they have to fine tune that in a way they've never had to before. And some of that is just not having the off season to work on it. But the teams that are really good at that play action passing me the Rams obviously are probably one of the best at it that the Niners are good at it. You see that just the precision of it. You see like guys in the right place at the right time. And you know, I, again, I think Rashid Rice might be able to get there. I'll give you that. But I also feel like, I don't think Xavier Worthy is going to be getting off Jam's anytime soon. I think Tyne Quantort is going to struggle with it. I think Cyrus Allen being a rookie is going to have problems. And no matter how good you are at running the football, if you've got guys who can't beat man coverage, it's still going to be a problem. You got three guys out there covering three guys. And your guys can't get open. Still going to be a problem for you. I think there's one thing that this missing from this conversation. And certainly we've got a part of this later on on a rundown, which is the offensive line. The cheese did not run a passing game as though they trusted their tackles. And there's going to be conversation.

And there is conversation about Cleal Benson allowing only one pressure in the game. Patrick Holmes got rid of the ball in an average of 2.5 seconds flat. That would have been the second quickest game getting rid of the ball last year. The second quickest game getting rid of the ball in 2024. And the second quickest getting rid of the ball in 2023. Their whole game plan was nothing that's going to take a while to develop. That also makes it harder for the receivers to get open. They had less time to get open. The cheese went through, I mean, how many passes did my homes happen in the game? He had 27. 23, I think? And the 23? No, he had more than that, right? 15 of 27. 15 of 27. 27. He threw the ball four times 10 yards downfield. Downfield shots are 20 yards downfield. He threw the ball four times 10 yards downfield. Like the cheese did not have a game plan nor did they need a game plan to throw the ball downfield. But it's because like you got to get Josh Simmons back. To I think really evaluate where the passing game is. Having said that, you need plan B.

And I don't think that the cheese, rightfully so, Cleal Benson, even if he had a great game, should you go into week one saying, Cleal Benson's going to be all right. Let's just leave him alone. Let's take 3.2 seconds to throw the ball. It was pretty clear to me that the passing game had adjusted based on their personnel. Yeah, let's do the offensive line here. We'll slide it up and talk about it. Because I think Jeff, that's just good game plan. You can go back to what we talked about. They knew what they had and they had a plan to work with what they had. And I think that's just smart. I mean, Cleal Benson doesn't have to be Willie Roof. Okay, Cleal Benson did a fine job in that game. And you don't have to blow smoke up his ass and act like, you know, he's the second coming of Jonathan Ogden. Like he went in there and divvity what they asked him to do. And I think that's the most important part to what Sam's talking about. Jeff is that they didn't ask him to do something he can't do, which we've seen Andy Reed frankly do all the time. Whether it was Andy Reed or Matt Nagy, or whoever people want to throw under the bus.

But Juan Yamoris out there, one on one on an island, he's getting his ass kicked all the time, was just stupid. And they didn't do that. And they played heavy personnel. They brought offensive linemen in his tight ends. I mentioned defensive linemen in as a fullback, tight ends as fullbacks. I mean, they did things to help. This was a smarter looking offensive game plan than we have seen for a little while. It was and it's also because the quarterbacks come with off an ACL tear, right? So they know it's not just that you got the rookie out there, but it's also like we got the franchise back here as well. I want to make sure that he's safe. And so he can't do some of the things that offset, you know, inexperienced left tackle. And I think that's what they got in trouble in the past with it, because they would put guys out there thinking, well, my home's just making work. My home's just pulled some out of his ass and make a big play and it doesn't matter if it's 1-8 Morris or Joe Tuny or whoever else would put over there, he'll make it work. And so now they're operating more from the standpoint of, we're limited. We're limited in the front and on the back end. And so I took him credit for that. I think the way they coached this game,

probably despite the best coach game actually the chiefs have since God, man, maybe going back to 2024, I can't think of a game where they were offensively defensively, special team was fine, but just on point and understanding what it takes. They understood what they had to work with. They weren't kidding themselves. This was a team that knew we're not on the top of the heap right now. We want to get back there, but if we want to get back there, we got to be smart about it now. We got to make everything work. What did you think of the offensive line as a whole, Sam? Yeah, I mean, that's why I made the point I did about the receivers. I mean, these two things go hand in hand. And I agree. It's a smart game plan to know what you have with the offensive line and adjust accordingly. I just think that the white receivers should also be greater on that curve. Well, thinking that they didn't separate well against, against man to man. But everything that Chief Ram was quick. I mean, like I said, four passes more than more than 10 yards down field out of 27.

Like you don't have a lot of faith in this group holding up for an extended time period. And there's one, first of all, the Office of Line did its job. I mean, the run game is part of the offensive line too, and they dominated in the running game. I will say the Broncos look quite different with one last pass rusher on defensive line. Jonathan Cooper has 27 sacks over the last three years. He's a high pressure guy. And what has made the Broncos so tough is they have three guys. You cannot play game plan for three pass rusher was Zach Allen, Nick Benito and Cooper. Two is not easy either, but it's easier than three. And I think it showed up the fact that the Broncos were missing a guy. Yeah. And I think that that maybe helped the Chiefs had the kid in there. And I was like, I saw the stat that this was the first undrafted rookie to start on opening day since like 2020. Well, I said that, but it's it's to tackle specific. I was going to say that's untack.

Undrafted rookie, who has started at tackle. And it's the cowboy started one in 2020 during the code. That's what that's what it was. Yeah, the guy who's still starting by, by the way, form at right tackle. And he started at right tackle too. And obviously, Cleal Benz has started on the blind side. Yeah. I mean, listen, I don't think Jeff, there's any way that this is great. You've dominated a team with Josh Simmons on the sideline. And you the scheme and the talent met and were very productive. I mean, I like, and I definitely think that, you know, the guard to guard, as we mentioned, what we all heard, we're at the combine of Brett Beach talking about how good they are. They put their money where they're mouth is. I mean, I like, I will say this, I wouldn't mind if Creed Humphrey could get the ball back. I don't know what outweir 2019. Yeah, snap. It was back to the human out there, wasn't it? I'm sure it was 2019.

It was like, I mean, that was the, when they repeated it, when it, whatever, it was a super bowl year. I know that it was when they repeated as champions in Vegas. Because remember, he, he closed snaps the last one of the, the, the second half when the two set to settle for a Fugel and Rashi Rises in Mahomes face, but why didn't you me the ball? It's like, because I didn't have it. What else, brother? They got back there. They reached up to get it. It's like four yards in front of them. Like, I mean, that is something we should point out in the passing game. I mean, one of them was Mahomes picking the ball up off the ground and just like, I'm not going to get this out to somebody. So at least one, so two, what was the second one? There's one that he just rolled back there and that was, he'd already, he'd already dirted a ball earlier. Okay. I mean, so that's two of the past attempts that you can say, okay, that's on the center. So I mean, you know, that, that's a reason for optimism on, on, on the passing game and the receivers being better. As if the quarterback can actually get the ball in his hands where it's supposed to be and be looking down the field and throwing rhythm.

I mean, I think that's part of, that's part of the great. That's the thing about this game is they won 31 10 and it wasn't all perfect. I know somebody wants us to be a cheerleader up there. I saw it in the comments. Listen, intro to footballs down the way. Go find another podcast. Want somebody to kiss your ass. I do, you're not going to find it here. That's not what we do. So, but like, I think, you know, we're going over the things as a point of how good this game was for the chiefs because it's not like everything just went their way. What a perfect day for the, no, there's still things places where they can be better. And I think that's what should be so encouraging to the chiefs fans. Yeah, and I would say that, you know, this is not, this, maybe this is what this guy doesn't want to hear, but I would say that this was a lot like the cheese play that charges last year in week one with a cheese. We're not ready to play in that game. Got out coached. We're expecting something different and something else came and didn't play their best game. I felt like it's good that the cheese play and they were certainly at an A level throughout this game.

He was home, not playing well. I thought that the broccoli was played at a level. I thought just the mistackles, the blown assignments. I don't know what bonus was doing out there half the time. Even Troy Aitman was saying some of the play calling, what are they doing on this? Well, Troy Aitman's not going to throw any credit for the Kansas City. We know that's not going to happen. But I would say I've seen Denver play a lot better than what I was surprised when the Richie Rice, Rade Moss missed that tackle the way he tried to tackle. Kenneth Walker, there were some things happening. He just felt like they were not ready to play in this game. That helps the chiefs look even better. But I will object a little bit to the sense that like why weren't they ready to play? I mean, they were bitching about the game being in Kansas City. There should have been no reason for them to not, I mean, like they're missing tackles. Yes, because there's an actual real NFL running back that they're trying to tackle as opposed to pit her pattern. Well, I'm 28. It's a lot of missed tackles. Yeah, it is. Yeah, I would say it's to me it's no different than the Rams playing the 49ers. That the Rams weren't as bad as they looked in that game, but they look bad, right?

And those games happen, especially when you're playing team within your division. I agree. Yes, yes, I that that I agree with 100%. The Broncos will have better days than this for sure. No doubt. I want to get into the past rush. The chiefs getting after the quarterback, Moore, man sort of laying being down for a little bit. We'll do it after you're from our friends in Italian to light. Sam, is it, is it, is it, we're going to see them get back into the upper 40s and sacks? Maybe even 50, are they going to be one of the better pass rushes we'd see? Or, no, just at least, pretty good. It definitely looks improved. Yeah, and I think you got to consider the opponent too. I mean, the Broncos have had a top five offensive line, potentially even the best offensive line, and the league last year.

To me, the most encouraging thing for the chiefs is the, the, the amount of contributors that they had to it. I mean, no Williams opens the game with a sack, which it seemed like was planned back in July to, to call a corner blitz on the first play. He had one sack last year. Armies and Thomas obviously wasn't on the team last year. He was playing college football, and then you had a sack from Felix and Yducu, Zomath, who was on IR last year. Who had a pretty good day, too. It wasn't just the sack. I think I was a great player. I think on PFF from this game. So you, you add, like those three guys or the three guys I mentioned, and the two guys actually making money to rush the pass or Chris Jones and George Carloftus. Like, you add those two guys, the equations. So I think, look, if Chris Jones had come out and dominated this game, which he did dominate the first half last, last year in Denver, it was the first game where we were kind of like, oh, that, remember, that's, that's Chris Jones. If he had come out and dominated, I think we'd all be saying, yeah, but it can't just be Chris Jones. They had it from multiple angles.

They were getting at the Broncos. And I agree with Jeff that Boenigst didn't know where he was half of the game because he was so confused by it. Are you a believer, Jeff? I'm a believer in the way they married the passwars to the coverage. To me, that was a big factor in their ability to create issues for Boenigst in that office, because you saw him hold the ball a lot. You saw him really mystified at Boenigst by what he was seeing. He wasn't able to get the ball out quick off the top when he was flustered. He was, you know, short, short arming it to, you know, to receive. And so it felt as if I didn't go back and watch the game over again, but it felt like a lot of their biggest pressures came off him having to figure out what was happening. And then all of a sudden, our Mason Thomas comes off a block and swipes at his leg or the fumble that Chris Jones got late was part of that as well. I didn't see guys tearing off the ball and just bringing down the pocket, but I saw a defense that together was very cohesive and helped that pass rush get things done.

But what Sam saying is right, when you're getting guys like FAU, the rookies contributing, you got to feel really good about that. And I think, I definitely want to shut out FAU because I know it's been a long go for him in this time with this team. And for him to start the season like that, you know, hats off to him. And it's like, you got to feel good about a play like that. Oh, absolutely. You're going to be doing that. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. You know, having the local kid, I've said it, I think it's really tough being drafted by your hometown team because if you struggle, everything you did, you know, being a star in high school and everything's just washed away. You're now the failure for the big club, right? Like, I've, you know, I, that's why I think it's tough to go to your hometown team. It's better to go someplace else because if your career bombs, you come home, you're still the local hero. You're still the guy who made the big sax and high school and everything. And so, yeah, I think it's great to see him do anything. And he was, listen, he's battled real injuries. And he was the big 12 defensive player of the year. Like, it wasn't like they took a guy who never did anything in college when they drafted him. But yeah, it's, it's great to see that.

And if he can give him, you know, something that warrants me and picked where he was picked, this Steven's of mind looks a lot better, right Sam? Yeah, I mean, it looks like it has options. And that's not something we said last year. I do think the other piece of this is maybe Bill Nick's isn't very good as in quarterback. Maybe what I've been saying for a couple of years now rings true. I mean, the guy, the guy has always struggled against pressure. It's just that the Broncos offensive line has kept him clean for, for the past two years. Like they, it's why when we did our best supporting cast, I rated the Broncos pretty high because I said, you've got to consider the circumstances with which he plays quarterback includes clean pocket after clean pocket after clean pocket. He didn't have any clean pockets and just totally crumbled under pressure. Yeah, I had to that. I would say that he's a better quarterback than Trump. He's calling the place. Like to me, it was very apparent as sharp as that game went on and Trump hit on the silent. He was like, do you mean that playbook? Let me,

yeah, yeah, that's going to have to be the right. Yeah, because you could tell he was, I see what they're doing and my guy's not responding to it. He doesn't have anything dialed up in my quarter back. South they're dying. And that, that to me was you saw how much Sean Payton at the Bodex last last. Has anybody explained why he's not calling place? Like why he decided to give this up? I mean, like, I think it's because he felt like they were going to lose him if he didn't. Right. But like what you had going was successful. I mean, what, when's he calling place week three? I mean, they can't survive another game like that without a, maybe he just wants to prove, prove his own worth of the building. Hey, what's my play calling? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. All right. Let's talk a little bit about Mansort Elaine being out. What does that mean for the chief defense? What do you know, what do you, what do you think of how they filled in for him? Can they do it week after week? What do you think of it a little bit? You saw from Mansort Elaine Jeff. I love that. I mean, again, you get to pick on your first, first rivalry of the NFL. You got to

feel really good about yourself. You get great coverage. That was courtless. Suddenly, a really good receiver in this league who's had a lot of success and he made it look easy. But to me, once he was gone, like, I got no weight and was played really well. I thought Christian Fountain had some some good moments. I felt the Jerry's knee played really well. As much as I was wondering about the depth of this unit, and again, it's only one game, I was, I came away feeling feeling pretty good about what I saw because that could easily be a moment where you start to let up and let down and start to hang your head and they did not do any of that. They seem to get more fired up and they played a lot of confidence. So again, the way they had been coached that Dave Merritt, I'm sure he's a big factor in all that and spags where they coached those guys up. They knew what they wanted to do, knew how they wanted to do it, and they did it at a very high level. Yeah. What do you think? Man sort of laying being down if he's down for some period of time, Sam, what does that do for the secondary? I think you have to consider the fact that the

secondary's job was a lot easier last night than what it was a year ago. So I think I said this on on your show today, but Triv McDuffie and Jalen Watson had to be watching that game being like, come on, really? I had to cover for twice as long every down last year. I mean, the cheese were getting to bow nicks. That's going to make all secondaries look better. So I think that played a factor into it and like that's going to have to be continued to be part of the game plan. And even Andy Reid said after the game about LaJourous Need, I'm sure he's going to be sore tomorrow. He made it through the game. I thought he played great. I mean, better than what my expectations were were form considering. Last two years, weren't just about injuries. He didn't play well in Tennessee, even when he was healthy, but that doesn't mean the health stuff just goes away and that you just got the guy for 17 games at that level. I still think you're going to need more depth there. Man, so a delay in a still a big piece. They were good with Adam. Everybody rose to the occasion like you used to you said, but they're still going to see they're still going to need Montsourne to line

this year. One of the biggest plays of the game happened when he was there. It was his interception. I mean, I agree. They are going to go deep into the playoffs. Man's sort of lane will be a part of it. I mean, I don't think anybody disagrees with that. His interception allowed them to go for it on four down on that first drive. Otherwise, it would have been three and out on the first drive of the game. If they start from their own to it, they're not going for it from fourth and two. From the 28, your line, if that's a pot in a touchback, like that interception gave them seven points. Yeah. Did you like the luxurious need, but you sought a sneak, Jeff? Yeah. No. Again, I was very critical of him and wondering where it's going to lead, given his last two years in Tennessee and not really practicing at all in the preseason and training camp. And so, from the come out, do what he did, yeah, I was stunned. Leaving the team in tackles and just being so active and energized. I said a couple weeks ago that Delane was going to have to be the alpha and the secondary and the guys to tell them, but let's hear you. Sneak was the one

doing that last night. What do you think of the job Steve Spegnolo did, Sam? Well, it's amazing how how better the rest of your playbook looks when you're just putting some some pressure on on the quarterback. Suddenly, everything's in play. And when you can put pressure with just the front four, the rest of it becomes much more tricky for the quarterback to anticipate. The cheese actually blitzed less last night than they did on average a year ago. And all the pressure and and Bill Nix's face, which that was the second highest pressure he's ever faced in his career. It was like 46, 46 and a half percent, 45 and a half percent, something like that. And he didn't know where it was coming from. So you have to give that part of the credit to see Spegnolo. Yeah, I thought that's bags was any playing young guys, Jeff. I mean, that's that's been one of the knocks on him is that given an option, he'll go someplace else. We did see a lot of a luxurious need. That was maybe some people's fear, but not at the cost of of no Williams,

no Williams was out there. We'll see what happens when Man sort of lanes back what the combination is of corners. But you know, they got pressure without having to bring all all kinds of exotic blitzes, although they did blitz at times. And it was effective. Pretty banner day for Steve Spegnolo as well. Yeah, and I wonder not knowing exactly how they prepared and what was in his playbook for this game. How much he avoided trying to get too overly complicated with things because it felt like when you see players, especially young players playing really fast and playing with confidence, that that's the piece of them knowing what they should be doing out there. And so didn't have to my encounters. You're down to safety, you're playing Jay Nix. Obviously, you're playing a rookie in a second year employee or a corner that that makes me think he went into this with the same mindset that Andy Reed had for the office, which is let's make sure these guys know what they're doing and feel good about what they're doing and not try to throw everything out there. And so maybe Spagler and the Bible lesson from first time back at 22 and he did this that if you're going

to play young guys, make them feel good about what they're doing. Well, I mean, I did he said something last week. I think it was where he said, we want to make sure where do you say it Sam? He's somewhere in there. He said some of the effect of well, we scale back some things so we want him to play fast. That's the right. He said over the summer that they couldn't implement the full playbook with a young group if they expected them to be able to play free. I mean, you want young players to stay healthy. Young players fly around. Like I think he can, you know, listen, I think he's tremendous. He's a great defensive coordinator and has forgotten more about defensive football than all ever know. Let me say that. I'm not trying to talk down about C's Fagnall, but I think there are some times that the kiss principles the way to go. Keep it simple, stupid. Let him let him be in a position where they can go make plays because they were making plays all over the field. It depends on the player. I think Jaden Hicks is that that type of player. And you know, without the the second S on that,

I just think Jaden Hicks plays best when the pressure is off. And I think the pressure is off when he doesn't have 15 assignments on a play. And it's just just go play fast, go play. And he's pretty good. He's instinctual. Like he's got Jaden Hicks has really good instincts. And so like, hey, follow your instincts and play. I think for some players, the complication makes them what they are. I think Tri-McDuffee was great with the most complicated stuff. The Jere's need is very good with the complicated stuff. I think you have some guys who, you know, Tyron Matthew was great at that. Justin Reed was great at that. I think it's just, you know, I mean, you parent your own kids differently. You certainly have to coach your players. Definitely some players, excel and one method, some excel in another. Chargers and Broncos overrated based on their poor performance in week one, too early to tell. What do you think of what they have both of them taking losses as one of the hands of the chiefs, obviously, but Chargers weren't supposed to be losing the Cardinals. That sent a lot of survivor

pools down the toilet. Well, what do you, what do you make of the two of them? You know, I think they'll both be fine. I think it's the three team race now. I think the chiefs had approved that they were moving back up into the range of contenders. They showed that in week one. I don't think that it's bad as Denver and the Chargers played that they fallen like off the map about being playoff contenders. I think that they will adjust and we usually see this happen every year we see that happen or somebody has a real week one and then week four or five roads around that they're humming pretty good. And so, and I based enough, just both teams are really well coached. Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh are two of the best coaches in the business. They're not going to see them fall apart with the rosters they have. So I think they'll be fine. Okay, Sam. Yeah, I think I think it'd be overreaction to say they're not going to hear from these two teams again. I will say I didn't pick the Broncos to make the playoffs. You know, on this podcast last week. So I'm not going to suddenly pick up to make it after seeing that week one performance. You are calling from to go six and eleven either. Right. I mean, look, this

at the end of the day, this is not like a Ken Palm rankings were or even, you know, the AP Top 25 where it's how good you look and that part. But the record matters and the chiefs were better than what they showed last year. The chiefs were leading in the fourth quarter and 12 out of the 14 games with patchal homes. I guess it's that at least a 50% win probability in 12 of the 14 games. That didn't matter. And like the standings is what is what matters. And like losing this game for the chargers, losing the Cardinals at home, that's a big loss that might hurt you later in the season. And the same way that, you know, that the chiefs losing that game in in Jacksonville on Monday night last year, to me, everything else might have looked okay. If you hadn't blown that that game with that pick six, this is a big loss for the Broncos too. Go look at the Broncos schedule and what they have for the next five weeks. Go look at the the charger schedule like fast four, like three weeks and look at the six week stretch that they go through. Like the Chargers are going to want that game back. Yeah, I think the the schedule is tough for all of them, right? Because

they've got the same teams for the most part. It's tough for all of them. You can't afford to be spitting out one of the ones that's supposed to be one of the give mes, right? You drop one of the dolphins. You've you've screwed the pooch. Okay, like there are certain ones that you have to put the win calm because it's not just about winning the division. It's like, are you going to be good enough to get in front of the Alpinga or Raven team that's in it for the wild card. A a bills or or Patriots team that's in it for the wild card or or a Texans and in Jaguars. I mean, there are plenty of other teams out there that you're going to be competing with. So those games, if you are runner up in the AFC West, if you want to get into the hit in as a wild card, you can't be you can't be coughing up the one side of the give mes because you've got enough tough games on your schedule that are going to put some losses out there. I mean, Xenny, what do you think the let's let me put it this way, Jeff. Let's go around the the circle here. What do you think though? AFC West winners record is when it's all sitting down. Oh, I buy say 11 and six. Sam 11 and six, but I

pick 10 and seven before I pick 12 and five. Yeah, but I think 12 and five is the top. I mean, it's a I don't see 14 and three coming from anybody. I mean, I'm with the Ocid Broncos of charges already have losses. So nobody's going to get on that bandwagon, but I don't see 14 and three coming from the chiefs either. So yeah, if you're if you're in there and 11 and six, you're you're in a spot that if you don't, if you're not the 11 and 16 and you're 10 and seven, you you're very well can be watching the playoff on TV. I think there this is why the to me the timing to the schedule matters to is because what are the Broncos going to be after week six and how what is their morale going to be based on what their record listen to what the Broncos have now. They've got the Jaguars on Sunday, then they play the Rams, then they play at the 49ers, then they play at the Chargers and then they play at home against the Seahawks. And I mean, heck, even week seven, though the week I stopped to for as the card in Arizona, who just beat the Chargers and then they play the chiefs again. Like those are their first eight games of the season. What what if the Broncos

are sitting there at one and five? Like how are they feeling and how does that affect where they really are when they're actually playing the easier games on their schedule. And I don't think anybody is going to turn around, you know, to the Andy Reed one and five back in 15. The start that they had, I don't see 10 in a row coming in this division from anybody either to like write the ship and get in there at 11 and five the way that chiefs team did. So yeah, I'm with you. This casual stuff and you can't be coughing up games. You need to get that's why it was important for the chiefs and the chiefs only have eight home games. So it was important. The chiefs are going to go three months after they play the Colts. They're going to play three home games in three months between now after Sunday. They'll play the Colts and it will be December 21st when they come home. They will have played three home games in that three month stretch. Yeah, when the schedule came out, that was my big takeaway from it is. And, you know, I mean, I think I tweeted that out. People blast me for I got to play them all. I think the order matters. Like I don't think the order of it's irrelevant. I would agree. I would agree. I
