I want to talk about something that really has sort of destroyed me the last couple of years. And I thought last night was an interesting start to this season with the backdrop. So, you know, before we get into last night, let's think about the last couple of certain goals, right? The last couple of years of pro football. And you have the 2024 Eagles winning on the back of Seikwon Barkley, dynamic running game, and the best defensive pro football. Last year, you have the Seattle Seahawks with a journey minute quarterback at Sam Darnold winning the striker ball on the back of

2:58the best defense in the national football league. And I think we have fully shifted to a defensive sport in the NFL now. And it was for a very long time an offensive sport. You know, you look at some of those numbers or put up by quarterbacks in the 2000, late 2000s, 2010s into the beginning of this century with Rodgers and Brady. And then you look at now, and it's a different world right now. And last night was a real interesting start to the season for a lot of perspectives. Obviously, Sam Darnold getting hurt, drew a lot coming in. H.A. Brown's first game as a patriot. H.A. Brown getting hurt. Drake May, runner up from BP last year. Super talented, expected to take another big leap this year. But coming off a tough postseason, I think his shoulder was a big part of that, but healthy now. And did not play well last night. You know, he was he under threw A.J. on the fleeflicker. They mentioned they scored it because they were the penalty on the D back in A.J. You know, caused the penalty, but A.J. drew the penalty. So that helped the patriots for this court, but they didn't get the touchdown A.J.

4:01And then three fourth quarter interceptions, one worse than the other. I mean, the last one was about as bad of an interception, considering that they were in field goal range and basically had it over time anyway. And it just made no sense to throw that football just a terrible decision by Drake May. On the other side, outstanding defense by the Seattle sea ox picking up where they left off last year. When you watch Seattle play how long they are, how sound they are defensively, it feels like they have 12 or 13 players on the field. Like when you watch them in the last year, it doesn't seem like they have 11. It feels like they have 12 or 13. They cover every blade of grass. It's it's remarkable. And you know, last night early in the game, when Donald went out and you got the sense that he wasn't going back and then they rolled him out around half-climbed, but you get the sense just based on the way it was being talked about. Sand Donald was hurt and he was not coming back when that football game. You know, it's seven nothing paths. Because I go down and score with the rear-dune kid scoring the touchdown, you know, on that drive. It's seven nothing patriots.

5:03Seattle's got a drew lock in the game. See, and then of course the patriots have Drake Bay. And I feel like in almost any other era of football or just even a recent era of football, when you turn the game off, the game is over, you know how it's going to go. And it's going to end up with the team trailing with their backup. Just cannot win that football game. It's too hard to be tasked against a quarterback and an offense that good on the other side. But that's not what happened last night. The Seattle defense won that football game. They made it so easy for their quarterback, their backup quarterback, drew lock. He had a do-it-a-do is like make one play to the little short cast that Jackson Smith, that Jigben, he turned it up and went up the field. That was it. That's all they did offensively. And that's all they needed to do because their defense won the game. And you think about the 24 Eagles, how many times their defense and running game won the game. You think about last year's Seox, how often their defense and special teams won the games. I'm not trying to take it away from Jell and Hurts or Matt Stafford or Sam Bradford.

6:07No, Sam Darnold, three may as in my head. I'm not trying to take it away from Jell and Hurts to 24 or Sam Darnold last year. But the reality of the situation is it has never mattered less if you have an elite quarterback in terms of winning games. That's not how this works anymore. It is about teams, it is about rosters. I think it is an incredible shift towards defense. It's probably a cyclical thing that happened and we are now in a defensive sport, but we are. And when you look at who's going to win the Sturmbulbus year, the reason why I picked the Rams to win it is because I think they're going to have the defense to match their offense. And they're going to be the only team in Pro Football this year that has that kind of fire power on both sides. But you could look at a team like the Houston Texans. Ooh, profile a lot more like 24 Eagles, Laster, Seahawks. A team that's going to win defensive games.

7:08That's the lead now. And if you don't have a big time defense, you're putting your team out of the surface because the games are lower scoring. The rules have kind of shifted a little bit back towards the defense. And I just think defensive have caught up. And the athletes are on that side of the football and the minds. I mean, these defensive coaches got torched. Let's just be honest. They got torched for years by these games. And now, I think the permeations and the derivatives of the Vic Pangeo system, the multiple defenses, the smarts on the defensive side of the football, I just think it's phenomenal. Like Mike McDonald is a phenomenal defensive coach. And it just feels like his defenses have answers to everything you're trying to do. Everything. You're trying to do that? I wouldn't take it away. You're trying to do that? Nope. Not going to be there for you. You better take this check that eight times because we're not letting you move that ball down the field. Not letting you do it.

8:10It takes a rare amount of patience. And I think the more young quarterbacks that come in the NFL, you know, they're going to have days within our patient. I think May last night showed his youth. It's only his third year in the NFL. And he has struggled when you look at his games against some better opponents. He obviously dominates a bad opponent. And that's something we're going to see how it plays out the rest of the year to see if he's the real deal. It's a level that a lot of people thought, including me. I mean, talent wise, he's the real deal. It's a matter of, you know, can he continue to make the right place and put his team in the right position? Mike, he did a lot last year. He did not last night. He did not miss a football. He did not. Well, he did enough to win, I guess. But he made support plays in the division around against Houston. He made support plays against Denver in that weird weather game in a championship game. Got bailed out by Sean Payton and obviously, Stenham playing there. But it's a different league now. I think the evolution of this different league, you know, the buttons are the, you know, pushed here by teams as they try to figure out

9:10where they can go with the curve, right? I think that the bell curve. It's, it's a trend curve that's happening. And what is next? And my guess is what is next is if we have another year where the league is dominated by defense and a lot of quarterbacks that are middle of the pack, if not worse, we're in a lot of football games. Let's use again, I'll bring the taxes back up because I think they probably, they feel like they took the blueprint up this net of this NFL. Let's say the taxes win with CD Stroud. Okay. I mean, the taxes might feel the holding to pay him like the, but say the Ravens did with Joe Flacco all those years ago. They might and that's their frog at the net. They could say, well, we won with this guy. We're going to win again with him. Great. But I do wonder if people are going to look at the league and say, well, hold on. Hold on. If that's, if you go in with Jail and Hertz at San Garnal and C.J. Stroud, well, why am I paying those guys that kind of money?

10:10Like, why would I pay a lot of money for that? Why would I pay so much for the quarterback position if I could build a team? If I could put the team around the quarterback, say the quarterback around team, I think this, there is a shift in style of play. I mean, you just look at totals on betting lines every week. It's the lowest week one we've had in a long time. There's a stylistic change in NFL football that has happened over the last few years. But I think that the next part of the wave is how that affects team building, how it affects the salary cap, how it affects all of it, and how it affects how it seems go about their business. Let's just use the Eagles for example. The Eagles have won a ton of football games over the past few years on the back of their defense. They're projected once again to be a good football team on the back of their defense. After this season, and you saw the news yesterday with Christian Gonzalez a couple days ago, the corner for the Patriots getting four years, $135 million per, you know, on the contract. So you do the math.

11:11That's $35 million a year on a corner now. So if you're the Eagles and a year from now, you have Quirnga Mitchell, let's say as in their all pro kind of season. And he commands in the area of $35 million, just the way Witherspoon didn't in Seattle, just the way Christian Gonzalez did with the new England Patriots. Well, of course Quirnga is going to want that kind of money. And the other guy, Cooper DeGene, who is a very interesting player, versatile. I think the comp for him and the way his age will probably try to spin it. And he'll want corner money. And the Eagles will say no. They're going to put him in safety more this year. But the simple kind of work around for the Eagles and Cooper DeGene is to use the Kyle Hamilton deal. Four years, $100 million. I mean, what is Kyle Hamilton? Kyle Hamilton's safety. Kyle Hamilton's the corner. Kyle Hamilton's a linebacker. Kyle Hamilton is a great football player. And the linchpin of their defense in Baltimore. A lot of Rock 1 Smith. So it's pretty simple to see how they're going to try to do that.

12:12And he got four years, 100 million. So that's 25 per year. So let's just use that as a very simple baseline. 25 per year for Cooper DeGene, 35 per year for Quirnga Mitchell. That's $60 million per season for those two players. And now he can finnical to Cap Alley once. That's the dollar note. And they have Jordan Davis signed up. And they have, they have, uh, Jell and Carter signed up. And I imagine she Alex Hunt. If he's going to have a big year, which I think he will, will be next. So there is a scenario here where the Eagles are going to have levels of their defense getting paid a ton of money in the back end and in the front. And if you're the Eagles and you can allocate the 60 million towards those two defensive players to where the league is going, versus 60 million to a quarterback at Jell and Hertz. That is solid. Yeah, he's been good. But, you know, physical deterioration perhaps we'll see how he accolades the new offense. Let's say Jell and Hertz has an okay season. You know, he had the end of the year. He's the 17th best quarterback at Pro Football, 16th best. It's similar to last year, maybe a little bit better,

13:13but we kind of put him in that tier. You know, would you pay that money? Would you risk losing a defensive player? Or would you go in the NFL draft and say, I can approximate this offensive production for a very cheap, for years to come. In a league where that's all you have to do to win. That's how you win now. Drew Lock came in. Siak still win. And it was it is good. And that wouldn't beat the Rams. That wouldn't beat, you know, the best team. Or I get it because, you know, the Patriots had it off night last night. It may end in off nine and AJ got hurt. I get all those things. But I do think the league is shifting. It is a defensive league now. That's how you win the quarterback position. Although there are some great, great, great players. Very few people think those great, great, great quarterbacks are going to win the stoopball year and year out. That's what shifted here. What is shifted is that the collection of talent, especially on the defensive side, is where the wins and the stoop balls are coming from. And those quarterbacks that are kind of left alone in an island.

14:16Perhaps because their teams have had mistakes, perhaps because they just haven't gotten lucky. Perhaps because they're making too much money, relative to the sour cap to a four defense is whatever it is. Because their careers are just kind of, it's not working the way their team wants. And that's why you see as many people with predictions yesterday, picking the Texas to get to this ribosum, as many as they are picking the March Jackson or Josh Valinor, or Project Moves, or Joe Burrow. Not because the seed just drives a better, not even close to those guys. But because he plays for that team, and because that team has that defense, you saw last night with Seattle, they'll stay afloat even with Locke, because of that defense.
