4:14Hello, everybody. Welcome to the Buckeye with the podcast. I'm Tony Jerdobin here as always with Tom Oartom. How's it going? Tony, it is the most exciting time of year. You can feel it in the air. Ball is here, but more importantly, Tony, it's Kent State Week, the most wonderful week on the calendar. Kent Reed, Kent White, right? Kent State Week. I believe is the saying all around. And yes, we are looking forward to seeing some things from the Buckeyes this week that maybe we didn't see against Texas. You would hope that the outcomes would be relatively different. But we previously talked about what we're looking to see and what we're watching for on the offensive side. Now we'll talk about what we're watching for and looking to see on the defensive side. Tom, and I'll be honest, my list is a lot of the front five, front six, front seven area. And number one for me is I just, I want to see more from James Smith and Andrew Kustin in this game. We didn't see much from them and they played a lot against Texas.

5:17We need to see some disruption. We need to see domination, frankly, and just plays. That's a playmaking position on a defensive line. And it's been a while since it's been a while. It's been since 2024, where Tyler Williams, since it's been a playmaking position at Ohio State. Yeah, it has been, that has been kind of one of the disappointments to me so far this season based on what we were expecting. I think the expectation was okay, Andrew Kustin is healthy after having a leg entry to start last year. James Smith, the conversation about him had been extremely positive going back to the, to even winner workouts. So I was like, all right, they're going to have these guys. They're going to be in the middle of the defensive line. They can be really disruptive. And then it just kind of hasn't happened. And they were really kind of non factors against Texas. So this is a game where if they come out and they play dominant football, I don't know that that shows me anything. But if they have another game where they have where they're just kind of non factors, that's kind of a big warning sign where you should be able to win your one on ones and be disruptive and be in the backfield and be chasing the quarterback and tackling the running back in the backfield.

6:22And you know, if you're not doing that in this game, then I have grave concerns about when you're going to have an opportunity to do that. The rest of the schedule. I'm going to go with I'm going to take the low hanging for you. Did the low hanging fruit on the last show. I'm going to take the low hanging fruit on the show Tony. I'm interested to see Cari Wilder. And I know we both had you had Cari Wilder with one sack on the world prediction show for one point. I had Cari Wilder on the bowl prediction show with two sacks for two points. He played five snaps against Texas and was, you know, against Texas. He was more impactful in five snaps than James Smith and Andrew Houston were in. I don't know 70 or something between the two of them. So what does that look like against a not as good offensive line? And what does that look like with presumably you would assume he gets 20 30 snaps in this game probably because I got I'm assuming Zian Grady probably won't play or will play the limited at least. So they're probably looking for guys to play more at that edge spot.

7:22And so I think, you know, maybe he still plays inside on those third and long plays. But if he's coming off the edge in first and second down, I'm fascinated to see what that looks like. Yeah, and when we did his ball predictions, I should have said they must all of your sacks must come from the defensive end position because it feels like the. The past rushing on third and third and long from the nose spot is going to be a very disruptive situation because I do expect a couple of third and long situations for Kent State's offense in this game. So that'll be interesting to watch. But also very interested to watch curry wilder from the defensive end position brushing the passer from the outside as a traditional pass rusher and see what that looks like. It's one thing to be this athlete on the interior just, you know, attacking a center who's not having a great day like you did against Texas. But yeah, you want to see where he's at his natural position and see how that goes and see how effective it is.

8:26Even if it is Kent State and I think he was one of the guys that I had written down as well. And then while we're talking about that position, Kueh Rousa, what are we going to see from him? I don't see much from him against Texas and he played quite a bit. Sometimes he's dropping back in the coverage. Didn't really necessarily see a bunch of rushing the passer from him or at least not effectively. That was his first game. He didn't play in the season opener. So he should have an advantage in this game being against Kent State and the usage that maybe they'll have for him. So I want to see him become a disruptor and again, because if he's not and they try to make him a disruptor, then you're kind of getting down the list of, well, it's not him. And it's, you know, Zionne Grady's injured and, you know, at some point as people move down, I think I'll see Cari Wilder move up. So I think this is crazy to say, is this a big game for Kueh Rousa? But I think it is. I think this is an opportunity.

9:28Again, you're not going to, if he has a couple of sacks, it's not, oh boy, he's going to be an all-American. And that's, you know, if you just see him being impactful in the backfield, I think that's a good sign. If they go the whole game and they don't say his name on TV in this one and he's playing a bunch of snaps, that's a problem. So, you know, I wait too early to write him off, but you certainly would like to see more of an impact from him in this game. I will, Tony, I thought for sure, well, he's going to take Riley Petty, John, because he's going to try and be a man of the people. But Tony, once again, out of touch, out of touch, coastal elite, Tony Gurderman, I will, I will be the one who says, Riley Petty, John, I will see, you know, this is someone who Ryan Day this week said, yeah, they like to see more from Riley Petty, John. He does a pretty good job of slipping blocks. He feels like he's a guy who could be a significant impact player, but I want to see where he lines up, because he and Christian Allegro have kind of been playing a similar spot. They've been both getting a lot of snaps at Sam and I think Christian Allegro is someone who's probably going to continue to play a good bit.

10:32So, do they move Riley Petty, John around a little bit and they're going to try and give him some, you know, find other ways to get him on the field, because when you're playing Iowa, certainly, maybe Illinois, but certainly Iowa and a couple weeks, you're going to be playing a bunch of three linebacker sets. So, you're going to see probably a bunch of Petty, John and Allegro appears at the same time, but when you're, when you're in a two linebacker set, which feels that's like that sort of like marginally, they're based defense at this point, where does he fit in there or is he still sort of the third linebacker, because if they're, if they're moving him around a little bit this week, that tells me they're trying to find ways to get him on the field in all situations. Yeah, and Tom calling me coast all elite, like the only coast I've rarely ever spent time on would be the the mommy river and that's more of the banks of the mommy, mommy river and I promise you, there's no coast all elite there. That's just people fishing for blue gill and, and that's about it. But yeah, I'm also interested to see what Riley Petty, John can do and just building off of the Texas game. I mean, he leads a higher state with two tackles for last season and, and you know, let's see more of him, but also that same position, one of the things I had written down that is, let's see a natural and instinctive impactful first half from Peyton Pierce, where there doesn't seem to be the hesitation.

11:49We talked in the Texas rewatch of the the sack with Riley Petty, John, Peyton Pierce was right there, but Riley Petty, John ran right by him and went for archmaning rather than kind of just waiting for arch to maybe come to him. So let's see a more comfortable natural impact was I said Peyton Pierce, running forward into the play and and not waiting for the play necessarily to come to him, just being a more confident guy, I think is something that this defense is going to need. So I'd like to see it in this game. Yeah, again, this is not one where you're going to look at this and go well, everything is every problem is solved and that's true of Peyton Pierce or anyone else on the defense, but you certainly would like to see more impact, more instinctual, more aggressive, more everything, but also disciplines not getting out of your rush lanes, not loot, you know, not being in the wrong gap, like you got to, you got to be disciplined, you got to be on your spot, but yeah within that within that structure being, being aggressive and being, being attacking and involved in all of that.

12:51So my last thing was the corners behind Jermaine Matthews and Devon Sanchez, like I, you know, Cam Kelhoon feels like he was probably getting the third most snaps against or the number three snaps against Ball State. I really want to see Dominic Kelly, I really want to see Jordan Thomas, those are both guys who have lost their black stripes are both guys who are, you know, plenty talented and this is one of those games where again, you want to earn snaps later in the season, you've got to do something with your snaps in this game, you got to show the coaches that yeah, you're, you're ready to take on a bigger role because, you know, Jordan Thomas losing his black stripe, yes, that tells you that the coaches feel like, okay, he's kind of checked the number of the boxes you need to do to get on the field. Now when you get on the field in this game, you're going to get an extended run, make the most of those opportunities, being impactful player, but also do your 1-11, don't just, you know, don't, don't play hero ball. Be, you know, do your 1-11, then do it really well and take away the receiver that you're covering and don't get cold pass and appearances and gear hand on a football and, you know, getting the reception if that's an opportunity, but just do your job and make the most of your opportunity and show that you deserve a bigger role later in the season.

14:06Yeah, I think Jordan Thomas is going to continue to climb and it wouldn't shock me if one of my ball predictions was 2D fits of touchdowns. So when it's one of those guys in the second half, making a plane, making that happen because he's just, he's an energy guy. So expect him to bring energy to Ohio stadium. So there you go.
