About this episode

“Life Audio Thank you for tuning in to your nightly prayer, a podcast designed to help you rest and connect with your father in heaven as the day ends. God is ready to meet you in this moment of peace as you settle into sleep.”From the transcript

No matter how much we want to be people who remain steadfast in our faith, there are seasons when we find ourselves drifting. Not through any dramatic departure, but through the slow, quiet wandering that happens when we stop paying attention to where our feet are going. And a wandering soul, separated from the still waters it was made for, eventually becomes a dry one.

The signs are familiar, even if we do not always name them for what they are. Patience running thin. Love feeling more like effort than overflow. A quiet irritability that was not there before. Envy creeping in around the edges. The fruit of the Spirit, which once felt natural, now requiring conscious effort just to produce.

If that is where you are tonight, it does not mean you are far beyond finding your way back. It means you are ready to turn around.

Psalm 61:3 is a word for exactly this place. God has been a refuge and a strong tower, even when we wandered away from it. He has not moved. And Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is the One who goes after the sheep that has strayed into rougher terrain. He leads beside still waters, not because we found our way there on our own, but because He came to find us.

A 180-degree turn is available tonight. No long process required. Simply turning back toward the One who has been waiting, with water enough to quench what has grown dry.

Come back. He is always there.

Ponder Tonight

Spiritual dryness rarely announces itself dramatically. It shows up in small attitude shifts, in the thinning of patience and the hardening of love, which is why honest self-examination at the end of a day or a season is one of the most important spiritual practices available to us.

The Good Shepherd does not wait for wandering sheep to find their way back on their own. He goes after them. That is the nature of the One we are turning back toward tonight.

Wounds and hurts that have driven us toward the wrong terrain are real and deserve to be brought honestly to God. Giving them to Jesus rather than carrying them alone is not weakness. It is the path back to the still waters.

Returning to our first love is always available, in any season, no matter how long or far we have wandered. The turn can happen tonight.

Tonight's Scripture

"For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe." — Psalm 61:3, NIV

Your Evening Prayer

Father God,

How our souls long for the water only You provide. We do not want to feel dry and distant any longer. We long to feel Your closeness as we once knew it, and we ask You to come into our world and help us find our way back to You, the giver of life, the giver of Yourself.

Help us keep our feet following only You. We are sorry for the ways we have wandered, and we ask You tonight to renew our hunger for You and the closeness we have known. We are turning back. We trust You to take our lives and do something with them for Your good and Your glory.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. Psalm 61-3. Something to ponder. I am sure we have all been there when we have woken up from a sneaky nap in our mouths or dry. We know the best thing in that moment is a good drink of water to wet our lips and help our mouths to feel less tight and sore. But how many of us also know that the same thing can happen with our soul?

No matter how much we want to be people who are steadfast with the Lord, there are times when we get sleepy in our faith and we find ourselves drifting off. No longer stuck to the Lord, but as sheep who wander into rougher terrain. People who no longer have access to gentle waters and our souls become dry. Dry souls almost always lead to a change in our attitudes. We can start to struggle to love our enemy, our patience, dwindles. We may start to become envious of the lives others have and if not kept in check that can lead to dishonoring God or becoming easily angered, love isn't as easy any longer. I wonder, friend, if you find yourself there, lost in the desert from wondering where you shouldn't have or wondering the wrong direction after being deeply wounded and hurt. I wonder today if you have found your soul dry and weary, looking for water to quench that

dry soul and it is nowhere to be found, or that any you do find isn't enough or long enough lasting. If that's the case for you today, can I suggest that turning to Jesus is the best option. Scripture tells us he is the good shepherd, the one who leads us besides still waters so that our souls can be both quenched and rested. He is the one who finds enough water so that our souls can be quenched and will never be thirsty again if we follow him. Today, friend, can I help you in a prayer for renewed hunger and closeness with God during this spiritually dry season? You are a nightly prayer. Father God, oh how my soul longs for the water that you provide. Oh, how I long to feel the wetness in my spirit again, to not feel dry and itchy, irritable and annoyed. Father, I long to feel your closeness as I once knew and I ask you today to come into my

world and help me find my way back to you, the giver of life and of water, the giver of himself. Help me to keep my feet following only you, not to look left or right but to step into the footsteps you create for me. Lord, I am sorry that I have wondered away and I ask you today to renew my hunger for you and the closeness we have. I am completing a 180 turn today, returning to you. I trust you to take my life and do something with it for your good and your glory. In Jesus' name, amen. Three things to meditate upon. Number one, have you ever wondered from the Lord? Have you been hurt, distracted, sleeping and found yourself somewhere you didn't want to be? And come back to Jesus, he is always waiting for you. Two, do you have things you need to forgive others for?

Have you been hurt, abandoned, betrayed? I urge you to give it all to Jesus and allow him to heal those spaces. In number three, in your own heart, examine where you are right now and what led you here, then you can make a plan to return to your first love. Put on tonight's prayer and share how God met you there. Join the your nightly prayer discussion on the crosswalk forum.
