The 2026 Pittsburgh Pirates season is officially in the books at 82-80, so tonight on NS9LIVE! we're pulling out the receipts.
Before Opening Day, DiNardo, Tyler and Jim made 15 over/under predictions involving Brandon Lowe, Oneil Cruz, Paul Skenes, Konnor Griffin, Jared Jones, Braxton Ashcraft, Gregory Soto and more. Now we're going through every one, grading the picks and finally determining who actually knows ball.
Plus, we look back at the biggest takeaways from the Pirates' first winning season since 2018 and what 2026 changed about the outlook for 2027.

Car salesmen are annoying. Ssss. Same here please. Never talk to one again with Flexcar the first and only month to month carbies. Oh no! Get a great car, switch anytime. Flexcar, you drive everything. Yo, yo, yo, welcome to the Norshor 9 podcast presented by Fandall. This is NS9 live and I'm your host, Anthony Denardo with me. We got Jim. We got Taitai. What's up fellas? How's it going? First, first non like baseball podcasts in a while. Well, non in season podcast. I guess it's still baseball but I see what would be doing that.
But yeah, first NS9 live of the offseason. I guess we can more it that way. No, I like my word more. It is good. This is always one of my favorite shows. Always one of my favorites. I know it's coming out that quick. I like to put this way. Jim has an obligation to be here Tyler. But we don't have an obligation to keep him on the show, right? We can come off. You know, I was thinking today. Unfortunately, there's a really good chance there's no baseball next year. So naturally, I feel like whoever wins this is the cause of no baseball next year. So however this thing shakes out, it's their fault. Believe that guy. However it shakes. I don't know how it's going to go.
We'll see. We'll see how it works. Yeah. No, I'm excited. I'm excited. This is we look back at our we look back at our predictions that we made at beginning of the year. And yeah, we talk about how they turned out who was right. And you know, more often than not, I'm right. You guys are wrong. So yeah, it makes for a super fun show. Didn't my win last year? That was the first time you've ever won. That was the first time anyone who's ever won was last year. Yeah. So the Nardo is winless. Denardo's winless. Let's see, put ball over again. You have won win and then I have every other win. Yeah. Well, yeah, I mean, this is kind of fun. I love doing this before the season. I'll say that I don't tend to love it after the season, but it's nice to go back and reflect still because it I think it's fun to get back into your thought process. And like this year's going to be one of those years too, because the parts ultimately
ended about where we thought they were going to end at, but in a much different way. So it'll be fun to entertain again, go back where the thought process was back then to talk about the season played out. But I mean, should we should we just dive into this? Is there anything we want to talk about beforehand? Let's dive in. Jim's like, yes, I want to call out loser. All right. So I do have all of the over and unders with the answers. So I guess it starts off. So of course, we just went around the room. Jim had the first question. This is the first one to my God. Jim asked, oh, here's the thing to it. Jim didn't win it. He asked the question. Yeah. So like who cares? Jim asked over and under on Brandon Lau, 24 and a half home runs. So I had answer.
Tyler had answer. We both picked the under. Um, fellas. He hit maybe just a smidgen above that. Yeah. I mean, 35 home or season for Brandon Lau. You guys were way off. Um, so yeah, that's I think the big thing with Lau this year was just the ability to stay healthy the entire season. You know, he really hadn't been able to do that very much throughout his career. You look at the seasons where he played more than 110 games, 39 homeers, 31 homeers and now 35 homeers. The years he played less than 110, 21, 21, 8, 14, 17, 6. So it's, that's kind of the mark there, right? Like if he's, if he can give you more than 110 games, he's, he's going to, he's going to clear that number. If he's going to, if he's going to be hurt for an extended period of time, he's not going to get there.
But yeah, he was, he was healthy all year this year, 4.9 F war. It was his best year of his career. Yeah, it was. Yeah. And I think me and the Darter were on the same page that we didn't really think that Lau would stay healthy enough for that number. But he had this kind of in the bag by May. He had eight March and April and we looked really down the right off the bat. He had to hit two in the first game. Yeah. But I mean, he, you see that going in this one. He says in the bag, but again, he could have got injured in June and been offered two months. Like he could have the Oh no crew season and no one would have blinked and I bat it and I like no one would have thought it in differently. Again, that's why we had a buffer in for the injuries. Like if we knew he was going to play for the entire season, I'd probably taken the over because if I remember correctly, too, we kind of talked and it's like, I mean, that's a really good number. But maybe 21, 22, 23, you know, there's going to be an injury here and there.
Yeah. Oh, no injury. He was at 20 by the end of June. You like had the ball all there. But then he did. Yeah. So zero points. Either of you. Zero points. I should get a point. I should get a point for asking. No, Jim. No, Jim. It's not how it works. I should get a point because I asked the question. All right. So I'm up. I asked the next question and mine was O'Neal crews over and under 24 and a half home runs and 24 and a half stolen bases. So both had to be hit. Fellas. He was the one that was injured. If he was healthy, he's crushing this. But he, of course, was on the 60 day I.L. He missed quite a few games. They didn't reach 100. He had a 20, 30 season.
I mean, so like good season all in all. And again, if you were to play even if you hit maybe just a 30 day I also have a 60 days, probably hitting this. But I'll be it. He was injured. It counts. And Tyler, Jim, you both took the over. I'm counting this as a win. I should get some points because I asked the question. Yeah, no points for that. You don't get points just because you won because of an injury. They get out here. No, but I'm really going to make it. Yeah, go ahead, Tyler. No, in all reality, we should get a point here. Like we, it says, did we know ball or not? We did. We were on the right track. He just only played 97 games. It's not our fault. He got hurt. Well, Tyler, get it to because it ran allow it to miss the amount of games he should have missed. Then we were getting the under on the home runs. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
So nobody gets points. All right. So everybody's so so far through two questions. No one knows anything. No, I am. I am. I should have been right both times. You know what? If Ben Sharrington gets to come back because guys got hurt, then I get wins because guys got hurt. Nate's saying raise it. Nate's getting his hashtags and he wants sandwiches. So far the way it shows going, why not? I am a little, I mean, obviously that that injury was was was was was rough on the team. But yeah, I mean, I had I went on fandal. That was my those my like my one of my bigger futures bets this year was over 21 and a half homeers. Oh, that's right. That really stings for you. Yeah. Because he was right there too. I mean, he would he would have crushed it, right? Like I mean, he I think he had 15 when he got hurt, you know, and then probably even when he came back off the I L, he was still hitting homeers just right out of time.
You know what I blame Ben Sharrington. I agree. Keeping him on the I L too long. This is also stupid because the Naruto picked a stupid question. It should have just been over under like 49 and a half stolen bases plus homerads. I agree. Well, I did that last year actually. So I made a little more intriguing this year. No, this is on you because I did combine them. I think it was combined. Maybe it was four. I think maybe in 39 and a half last year or maybe it was four and a half. So this year I made it more specific. He had to hit both. Yeah. The Naruto and Ben Sharrington both take the blame. Yeah, it's those two those two fault can't help with the players. Couldn't perform. Anyways, all right. So next question. This is Tyler's of course. Tyler giving it to Jim and myself. Tyler's question was Jake Mangum total hits. Tyler gave us a one 15 and a half total hits and also Tyler.
That was a really good number because Jake Mangum had 120 hits and of course that was also because Oh, no, Cruz got injured and he had all that playing time. So like once again, Oh, no, Cruz is hurting you here for his injury. But we both took the under. I don't think he's gonna play the appearances. I gave a question. It's just all right. So far, this isn't looking good guys. We are. Every single one is because of an injury or a lot of injury. Like an injury. These are all injury related. But yeah, I mean, I didn't think I didn't think Jake Mangum was going to get 479 played appearances this year. And I remember saying that like when this number came up, it was I was like, I don't know if he's going to get the playing time to get that many hits. I was like, I think he'll be a solid contributor, good for a thou fielder, but 120 hits is a lot. I mean, 115 hits is a lot and he ended up with 120 back to back years with 120 hits
for Jake Mangum. Yeah. Should have said 120 Tyler. That's three and no for me because you both got that wrong and I got the first two right technically. All right, we need to we need to pick it up here a little bit. Well, guess what guys? It's not going anywhere. Do you want to even know it? Take a guess what the next one even is. Paul schemes ERA. Yeah. Guess what fellas? All right. So back around the horn. Jim's asking the next question. Jim asks Paul schemes ERA. Two point two four five. Well, Jim, you both laughed at me. He said under a two ERA every single year, these two years. I mean, this is the best picture on the planet. Now is he going to have under two again? Probably not, but like what? Two, one, two, two. You know what, Tyler?
I'm taking the under on that. What did I take? Oh, you took the under. Okay. I think you both just want to confirm. So far we are now 0 for 8. Yes. We definitely do not know ball. Definitely don't know ball at this point. Yeah, three eight two ERA and the year. Obviously, not the season. The pyres needed from Paul schemes. Yeah. That one was that one was rough. I didn't think we were going to get another sub to ERA. But I was at least expecting sub three. Yes, you know, and that needed to happen. But yeah, that was a rough start, rough start. All of us so far, so far not good. Yeah, it's rough. I just miss this one. I can't even. I'm three and one. Dang. Well, we're going through these two.
You guys ready for the next one? Yeah. So last year, there was two players. Keep that in mind. I said this question. There was two players last year. So my question to you two was five and a half position players over a 99 and a half WRC plus. Two players last year on the team was league average or better. Two. So by seven and five and a half, we finally have a difference here, guys. Jim took the under. Oh no, took the over folks. There was nine this year in total. So we finally were on question, what number five and we finally get one person on the board. And it's not.
You know, when I end up winning this, whatever I said earlier, if you do win, like, it's all your fault, I am for one right now. Technically, you're you've got one. No, I mean, outstanding season by the offense. No, no, the way around it, they they performed and a lot of people performed. So outstanding prediction by me. Yeah, five and a half. That's I probably I want to get in your head now, Jim. I missed there. I missed there. Take the under on that. Are you sure that I took the under your mindset? Like did you did you double check this because I don't know about that. I feel like this is the opposite of how it would have normally gone because Tyler is the one who's always super negative. I'm the one who's always positive. How was I the one who picked under and Tyler picked over? Because you're an idiot. Yeah. That's definitely what happened. He's the raining champ. How dare you question him? I'm I'm I'm I'm protesting the outcome.
I don't know if that's right. I don't know. Well, again, I kind of what do you think was in your mind back then? Like if you thought it was going to be the under, who do you think was hitting and who? Of course, you know, who did hit didn't you think it would? Yeah, I think I would have picked over. Oh, he didn't. He is you all understand why we hate him so much, right? Like you guys get it, right? I mean, I know this is on video somewhere, but I do think we need to suffer a poll. I think we might need to double check that. No, I think he's right. I get the point. All right. So next question. This was a dumb one. Tyler has some really food. Well, to tell us some really dumb questions. This was a layup. So Tyler says, okay, guys, Jared Jones is coming back from an injury.
What's his max velocity going to be? I want to give you an over and under of 98 and a half. That one's soft. Tyler's over under was Jared Jones at 98 and a half. Now, do you guys remember when he came back? Yeah. About his when. And the May beginning June. Yeah, okay. Yeah, 529 May 29 against Josh Bell. He threw a 101.5 for a fly out. Yeah, so I'm pretty sure I said over there. Yeah, we both did. I think if I recall rather quickly. Wow. Yeah, his average pass ball velocity went up. It was 97.4. His rookie season in 2024. And it got up to 98.1 this year. I think it's really wanted to get you guys on the board here.
Well, now we're all tied with one. Everybody's got one. Six questions in six questions in. We've gotten a total. So 12 possible answers were three and nine. Period. Stop. Let's let's keep it going here. Keep it going. All right. Well. Jim asks. Bubba Chandler. Top three in rookie year voting. Now here's the here's a little bit of the cognitive. This isn't a done deal yet. There is no answer technically. However, I think we all can agree. And everyone who's listening can agree. He's not going to be the top three this year. No. It was a safe bet. He finished, uh, let's see in the national league alone.
Seventh in war among rookie pitchers. So yeah, he's not finishing top three, especially once you add in. Yeah, Benge and weather hold and. Yeah, all those guys. Yeah, all those guys now. He did have a. A productive year. You know, there's things to like about it, right? Not the year that I think a lot of people anticipated and the total of some of the season. But anyways, yes. So. I said I took the under that he would not. Tyler took the over that he would. So if we're counting, that means we're now four of 14 and, uh, I'm in the lead. You know, I just tried to lead. That's probably the last question you get right, though.
I don't know if you got another one, right? It might be. But I'm stopping the count right now. Oh, technical difficulties, fellas. Yeah, yeah. Just for the record, I have the transcript from our predictions. Oh, okay. What did Jim say? Jim said. Is it my turn? I'm going under. I'm going under. I think five is about like as good as they can do right now. And that's assuming first base, second base and all the outfield positions. No. D.H. Yeah. Well, there's that. You went under. Confidently. You jumped right in and said under under under. Hold on. Hold on. What was the question? How many positions finish above? 100 or was it? How many players? I feel like it was position groups to be honest with you. Because if it's position groups, you know what?
Yeah. I do think it was position groups. Because then we got it. We got to redo this a little bit. I think you're right to the way this is where I think you're right. It might be positions. So actually what that means is Jim won and Tyler lost. No, I don't think that's true. All right, hold on. Let's let's see here. Let's see if we go team stats. Let's just go pirates. Catchers was a yes. Okay. So we want Ace. No. Second base. Yes. Shortstop. No. Third base. No. 99. I feel 122.
Yes. Sinerfield 117. Yes. Left field 94. D.H. 83. I don't feel like that's accurate. Oh, let's go. Now Tyler has a transcript. Was it players? Was it players or was it position group? I was right. I think it was players now. I think it was positions actually. I think it was positions. So take Tyler's point off the board. I'm appealing that we got to look back at that. That's going to replay. That gives me two now. Two to Tyler zero zero. Two to zero is what it is. Sorry, tie, tie. No, we got to go back. I think it was positions. We'll confirm that. How about this? Let's cut to a break. Okay. As I'm doing that, maybe Tyler can confirm it with the transcripts.
Or we'll have Jim also review the transcript because, you know, don't want Tyler cheating here. So let's go to do that. But of course, I want to bring this up real quick, because this is really cool. You guys keep looking too. Reese says he met Mitch Keller yesterday, bumming gas at his sheets. That's cool. All right, Reese. What's hand? Which shoulder? Those shoulders looking good? He did say that he's looking better now. He feels good. Who? Mitch or Reese said that. Mitch. Mitch said that. The question was, how many positions this year will hold above a 99 and a half? Tyler, you got zero points. Jim's got two. I think we need to be sure. I'll tell you what. To be honest, the reason we were tied was because a lot of people that I know use nicotine pouches. And the part that miss most isn't so much that nicotine has the routine.
Lorraine just launched a pouch that keeps the routine but leaves the nicotine out. Lorraine pouches are pouches that swap out the nicotine and give you clean focus and support your name. Oh, Flexcar. Yeah, that's what I meant, too. Flexcar is the first and only month to month carlies.

I don't think that's true, because the waiter runs Cray Plus could change it at some point. No, the way not after this season's over. Oh, yes, it got after this season's over. No, it could. Remember, and we finished it for right? Yeah. So like even if third base is the one left field. Left field. Third base is the one where it was 99.
So even a third base bumps. No, they'll figure it out. Zero, two and two. All right, so we did Bubba is rookie. Yeah, right? Okay, so next question. So I asked this one. So. My question to you was Braxton Ashcraft. Was his ERA going to be over or under. Bubba Chandlers. More or less who is going to be the better picture, right? Or Braxton because we had that dialogue early on the year. And folks, Braxton Ashcraft had a 3.65 ERA outstanding stuff. And as I think I mean, I know Tyler Knight to this other post game, but it's like his season was so good that 3.65 almost makes a sound as like that's doing a disservice for him. Like he had a better. He had a better season like that ERA shows. Bubba on the other hand had a 4.66. So clearly he was under.
And folks get Tyler on the board. You both took the under. So you both nailed it. Cash it. Yeah, to go back to that like Ashcraft ERA probably seems higher than it should be because he had a, he had like a couple blowups there. Like he went through a stretch in the middle of the year where he blew up a couple times. But yeah, I mean going into the year, I think we were all very high on Braxton Ashcraft. So it doesn't surprise me that we felt that way back then. Yeah, it just makes me question why the hell I had Bubba in the top three rookie of the year. But think I was just trying to be different at that point. Well, hey, you're on the board. So I've got three now. Didn't always got two. Tyler's got one. I should have like five. You should, but you don't. Remember what I said before the show. Should be in the playoffs, but they're not.
Yeah, a lot of things should have happened. But you have one period full stop. Okay, so next question. Guys, this is. This is sad for multiple reasons. First off, the question being asked. Second off, the answer to it. And thirdly, both the an absolutely correct on it. Tyler asks Henry Davis is. Badding average. And he sets it at 0.2195. And you both took the other. Jim and I in the badding average was 172. Like not even close. Not even remotely close. Hey, an improvement though for Henry Davis. He went from 167 to 172.
Also weighted runs graded plus for head Henry Davis. It went from 30 to 40 to 62. Right. So you're sensing a pattern, right? It's like doubling every year. So that means next year, you're going to be looking at. 30 to 40 to 62 is not doubling every year. It went up by 10. Then it went up by 20. Next year is going to go up by 40. And so he's going to be a league average hitter next year just based off of patterns. This is how science works. Go back to our earlier conversation. And then we did the catcher position have a 102 weighted runs graded plus with Henry Davis. Taking up 97 of those games. Because Flores and Andy were awesome. I was going to say it's also because. He only had 97 of those games. 97. And it's all like he. And like this was his best year as a.
This was his best season since his rookie year. He was a 40. It wasn't a 40. It was a 62. So he didn't he didn't bring down the numbers as much. As he has been. He was only 38% below average this year. Yeah, he let them on life support, but he didn't kill them this year. He. And he was the guy. Again, it was for the first time in his career. Like last year was Joey Bartz, which was fine. But like, yeah, like, Andy was productive. I mean, they brought that way up. And then again, you talk about the catcher position. It's it's this week everywhere too. So. Yeah. So. We were so another point for me in the Nardo. So we expand our lead against Tyler. So that puts us at what one three and four. One three and four. All right. We're like doubling every time. Yeah, I'm. Nick asked Worst catcher offense in the league.
And like, we're not not even close. Not even close. We're in the top half. The Pittsburgh pirates were ninth. In offense at the catcher position this year. Nine. Does he mean the position or the player though? Let's go back to our owner. I mean, even if it's player, it's. Yeah, even if it's player still not even close. Yeah, he says Hank. Carlos Narvaez has 33 weighted runs created plus drew Roma 51. And then 100 or 62. Okay, so he's the third worst. Out of people with over 200. Not even close. But numbers wise, he was twice as good as Carlos Narvaez. He was significantly better than Cabrinha's this year. And like, yeah, he was like six times better than Cabrinha's.
Yeah. Cabrinha is bad. But he's really not that talk about that anymore. No, we don't. All right. So we talked. And so that was Tyler's question. And we gave it right. So now Jim asks a question. And Jim, we're going to go back to remember this mindset about Tyler. Keep in mind Tyler, Mr. Negative. Jim asks, Connagriffin's M.O.B. debut. May 1st. May 1st. I took the under because I know ball. I'm in the number four. Tyler took the over. I was like, I'm not sure if I recall was Tyler even saying like June. Tyler was saying. Yeah. I was waiting on super two. Okay. So Tyler's still at 1 4 4. Okay. All right. It's a ball game.
Well, for two of us. For two of us. Yeah. It's like it's Andy Raphael. And there's look at Henry Davis sitting over there. I was like, I'm going to pick up the points. And then he's writing down to Charles to do good things. So when they do I'm happy. He was up here on April 3rd. So I was happy. Thank you. Good job. Three days into the month of April. He was playing a baseball game for the Pittsburgh pilots. Sure was. Thank you. I'm happy. I don't expect it. This is the key to my positive attitude. I expect the worst. All right, well. So then it was my turn to ask a question. And I've actually asked this question, I feel well, I'll ask it last year. So I brought it back again this year because I think all of you missed it last year.
So Dennis Santana is with Dennis Santana, Mr. Dope. Dope. One of the best leaders in baseball is these come over to the Pirates. Dennis Santana is with 0.99. Now I'll say this, and I remember the dialogue. Like, it's almost like the skiing thing. To be that low, like it could happen, but I'm gonna take the over. You both took the over. If you recall, as you guys said, here's your floor, but you both took the over. Tyler, Tyler's at two, Jim's at five, all about four. Oh, and by the way, his whip. And remember, too, these are always all with the Pirates. His whip as a Pittsburgh Pirate was one five one. Yeah, I mean, 0.99, as a pirate, he had 0.92, 0.87 going into this year. So I mean, it's a reasonable number if you expect him to kind of continue that.
I think the thing was was like, no matter how good Dennis Santana could be, it's tough to have a whip under one. It's really hard. And so, yeah, I just went over one because I was not expecting Dennis Santana to have a 1.51 whip, but 1.2 would have been just fine. Dennis, you could have just stopped there, but he didn't, unfortunately. Definitely expected better. But he almost hit that number with Arizona. It was a 1.2. He was a 1.2. Yeah, with Arizona. I feel like he was there. Then did he have a blow up outing late in the year? I think his last game, he blew up. Yeah, give up two runs in the last and a pounding. But yeah, unfortunately, hold Danny just didn't hold up. Probably cost this team a couple of games
in a playoff spot. Doug, so sad. Yeah, I mean, you wonder how the season would have gone had Dennis Santana just been his normal self. Because I mean, at the end of the day, a relief pitcher is a reliever. They pitched one inning every few days, but you can't be as bad as he was. I mean, if he would have just been a dude who had an ERA in the fours, right, I think we could have, you know, he's forgiven that for a little bit, but yeah, he just, he did not have it at all this year. It was, it was rough. And it was like from the beginning too. Well, that from the get-go. It was actually good. He was getting out, but it was, it was like, well, yeah, yeah, you could kind of see where man, they're hitting the ball hard. He's not getting swings and misses. He, he just didn't have it this year. And there was at some point, I, I'm going just off of memory. So I'm just being it out, but I think it was 42 badders
in a row he went without a strikeout. Yeah, it was bad. Yep. Yeah, so you guys get a point though. So congratulations for not believing in Dana Santana. Speaking of believing in relievers though, what's next? Yeah. All right, no, for all though, this is going to be a good one because yes, Jim, you're excited about this. I'm also excited about this. Tyler. Tyler. Gregory Soto, ERA. Tyler gave a 3799. And we know Tyler hates you gave a 37. This was your question. No, this is Tyler's question. This was me. Okay. All right. Okay. So Tyler gave a 3799, the array. Now,
Gregory Soto, 3.63 ERA. Did you hear that, Tyler? The 3.63 ERA. Gregory Soto. Best season since 2022. Means he's been pretty terrible. Jim did take the under. So Jim gets a point. So Jim's at 6.6246. I did take the over. I did take the over on Soto. And if I recall, and Tyler has the transcripts, do go to the tape. But I recall though, I was like, again, like, I don't know, that's such a good number, but I could see him being close to four, but still being like a productivity. Because like he's been prone to the blow up. Like I think of what we talked about this too, even the signing. It's like the array is never pretty, but he actually is a very productive reliever. And I can see this year like the ERA being close around four, but I still going to take Gregory Soto. And that's about what he did.
He actually was even better anticipated. But we saw the blow ups. A lot of people remember those blow ups a lot do. And that's why they don't even think about how good he actually was. And like Tyler, he actually was pretty good. 3.63 ERA, but I did take the over. His second and the last outing, I think Don Kelly was conspiring with Jim because he was going to blow up. And this would have been an easy over, but he brought in Luke Weaver with two outs. And he wasn't charged any runs. Conspiracy. So so he used I sir to get him out of the way. So he couldn't have I sir ruin this for you. That's what it was. Yeah. Now I want to go back to this because I feel like Gregory Soto, someone who just gets a lot of unwarranted hate this year. And he had a really bad June. They bad June. But like that first half of the year where no one was doing anything in the bullpen.
Like he was it. He was the only person and he was used a ton and he was super effective. March and April of 1.84 ERA, May a 2.08 ERA. And then again, June didn't pitch a lot, but again, wasn't good. He had a 13 and a half ERA in June like that. That's when he he went through a rough stretch. But then he rebounded like July 1.74 August 1.32. He had four months this year where he posted ERAs below 2.08. And this was a bullpen that was just in shambles from the get go. And he was it was him and Johan. If you remember like at the beginning of the year, it was like those two were the only people who could get out somewhat consistently. And they went to them a ton. And maybe that's kind of what led to that June being a little down was just he was used a lot those first couple of months.
But overall, it was a really good year for Gregory Soto. Tyler, I know, I know like I don't know what it is, but for it's he was he was good. He was good. And you know what? Like I am all four bringing Gregory Soto back, like bring him back. They need a lefty reliever to go along with Montgomery. I don't know how much better you're going to do than this guy. He's a he's a good solid left handed reliever, especially if you're asking him to just give you an inning, give you an inning here and there in the seventh eighth inning. But so I think he was I think he was used a lot this year. I mean, 40 innings in the first half of the year, 40 innings. But he was really really good early. Yeah. I do have to admit that he was really good in April and May. He's just so damn painful for me to watch. I hate watching this guy pitch. It's three and a long everybody. I mean, for my own sanity, I don't want to watch him throw anymore to pirate uniform.
I will give you that. But that Johan, I mean, double the nickname of the experience and that that's why. I mean, Johan, that's got a wayward, refreshing because you take three. Oh, and that happens. But Johan, like he loads the bases. I feel like every time he's out there, he gets to enjoy watching him either. I know, but that's all I'm alluding to. Like the most honestly, like the probably too outside of Mason Montgomery, although, yeah, you could probably, I mean, Mason Montgomery wasn't that way early on the season. The most consistent relievers probably was Gregory Soto and Johan. Again, they had their bumps, but most, you know, when you look at month by month and stuff, like they had more good months than those bad ones. And Johan, I think it's part of that too, but yeah, they are the most frustrating relievers. But honestly, like they got the job done. And it never is pretty with Soto, but again, like track record kind of proves itself. Now that's just kind of the guy that he is.
The stuff's still there too. Like it's not as if like, it's not like Dennis, antenna that first early on, where like the outs, the numbers were okay, but, you know, like Soto is still striking guys out. The walk rates not terrible. It's not great, but it's not terrible, you know, but like, he's a good pitcher. This over and under is apparently turned to a platform from Jim, pining for Gregory Soto to return. But like I'm also good with that. Like I would not be opposed to having him come back. I just don't know what he's going to cost and let all is going to come down to and stuff. And, you know, they do have a really good lefty in Mason Montgomery now, who is the closer, but he's the closer, you know, you are one of the lefty in that bullpen. So I would bring him back. I would not be opposed to it. Tyler says no. For cheap right, bringing back, I'm not paying a million. Just some numbers to like just kind of back things up left handed relievers in the majors. Soto was 14th and strike out rate.
Pip, he was 16th. So I mean, he's. Every team would love to have Gregory Soto on it. I mean, that's that's kind of where I'm at. Like if you are a major league baseball team, uh, Gregory Soto would have made you better this year. I don't know if they're going to be able to bring him back at seven. Well, seven, did you get, was he seven and a half this year? It was. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'd be all for if you can run that back, do it. I'd even be open to doing like a two year, $15 million deal. Like give him a second year. Yeah. I guess that's, so that's where I'm like in between you guys. Again, I, if they bring him back, I'm not. We're being. I'm not carrying on about anything. I just wonder of that price point with what they got going on. If it just makes sense for them to maybe try to pull another Mason Montgomery out of that.
Sure. There's not a lot of those though. I know. Oh, I know. But like the, the bullpen is on a lot more solid ground this upcoming year. So though like last year, it made sense to try to get someone who's like a veteran with some closing experience in case. Then it's the antenna doesn't, which he didn't work out this year. I think, I think we all feel a lot more comfortable with Mason Montgomery being that person. But also if not, you do have weaver. You know, so like you also have that if doesn't work, you have a fallback option. So that's why I would love to settle back. But I could definitely see like at that price point with what they got to do. Maybe going a cheaper route, which the title, you see this time and time again. That's where you make your money as a GM. Yeah. Yeah, I think they need to find a little bit of buried treasure there. But we'll have plenty of time to talk about all that. Yeah. All right. So point for me.
So was it two, four and six now? Is Tyler two? Where's the Tyler's it to like seven? You have four and I have six. Yeah. Oh, all right. Team box because anyone, anyone gives a shit about that. What's the over and under going to be on the Pirates in box this year guys. And he sets it up for and a half. And if I remember correctly, was it at four last year? Let's see, last year the Pirates had was below this. Last year the Pirates had two. Oh, okay. They were getting a second last year. Yeah, it was last last year they had two. Well, they had seven this year. And Jim was letting us know every time the Pirates had a box. I was one of them. I'm never seen someone get so excited in a group chat to tell everyone the Pirates had a box. I think Miss Keller had the first one and it was it was like. It was like the second or third game or maybe it was the home opener.
It was it was early. It was the Pirates had it was the math series. Maybe it wasn't Keller, but there was an early box. And it was like count it. Okay, maybe it wasn't that series. It could have been Cincinnati, but yeah, like I do remember like it was definitely the first week. Because it there was one right away. Because again, I do not forget Jim gloating about that box and how early it was. Just like just like print allows to home runs in the first game. When he was getting on everybody again, do you guys not understand when we talk about Jim? Yeah, Tony and I both took the other. We took the under. You both took the under. Yeah, it ends up being well over at seven. The Pirates actually were tied for fifth most in the majors in box this year.
It's a two politics having all the same box. Two of those box were pitching out of the wind up with a runner on third. That was all the two of our yeah, yeah, and Jones, I think had another one. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, Ashcraft was pissed at both of those. So are we Braxton stop blocking. It's why you're a three six five. Ashcraft on the block. Yeah, I think that's what I think it's like a two. Rigged. It's rigged. They should both been demoted to triple it. They both did it all purpose. You know who didn't box then I see antenna. Gregory. No, he did. Do you know that? No, he did. I haven't. You know who else blocked Gregory. So. There we go. So everybody we've named has.
Wait, wait, so so do and Santa box. Yeah. Damn. All right. All right, one next question. Now this was fun. This is not stupid like box. Box is stupid. My question was Don Kelly ejections said at five and a half because hey guys. Donnie ball. And you saw what he did last year he's getting injected right and left. Is he going to be that same guy? You know, we have ABS involved. So like, you know what maybe not. There's not a whole lot to argue with this year. And if I recall to I think last year. The leader was I think it was. I forget who I think it was it's six. So I said it five and a half. And fell loves getting. I did because I specifically mentioned that I think there would be less ejections because of the ABS.
Turns out a lot of the ejections were were like. And it's not just the other thing that you could argue that I was not. I was not giving a like that ended up being a whole new thing that you could argue that I wasn't anticipating. So yeah, it didn't really cut down on the ejections at all. If anything, it just added to the fuel. Yeah, because there were a couple where it was like he was ejected because someone wasn't granted an ABS challenge. I think Jim could not predict that the umpires would be giant man children. Probably. That's on me. You didn't so you did take the under and Tyler took the over. Sure did Tyler. Sure did. And I feel like he got ejected really early this year too. Like there's stretcher is getting tossed constantly. There was like a week where he was tossing two or three times. Yeah. Yeah, that was great. So three, four and six.
Yeah. All right. And guys, this is our last question. Tyler asked it. So unfortunately neither of us can come back. Jim does tech. And actually, I don't even know the exact answer on this. I think this one was an under. But I was going to ask if you can give me an email address. I can find it. I don't remember what it was. I'll tell my head. I'm gonna ask you a little bit about it. You know, the question of what it was. It was about two and a half. And of course. Tyler asking this. Tyler asks does tie ties dad win? Two and a half sandwiches this year. So all he had to do. He had to win twice. He had to win twice. I guess two and a half wins. No, saying on to and a half sandwiches. I do have this listed as sandwich. Okay. All right. Okay. So he had to win twice. Okay. I won all the time. I ties dad won like four times. Oh, that's right. Oh, yeah. No, Jim. That's right. Your dad's the one is number one until this year. Yeah, that's right. I'm trying to get tips from Tyler's dad at tailgate.
No, it makes sense. So because Tyler's dad was winning all the time. We had a two and a half. So yeah, tie tie. What's like I said, I'm gonna give you a dress out there. Oh, it was a it was under you say. Yeah, you got it out. Yeah, we got shot out. Okay. Well, okay. That's a battle by the result. He's Well, I'll tell you what, Jim and myself took the under. And if I recall, I think it was because like the law that I was just having like rigged. Yeah, yeah, the under rigged starving a family here. Thanks guys. I mean, I to be honest, now that season's over, I did rig it so I would win this. And so did Jim when he was on. So at least when Jim and I were on, we were absolutely rigging it that he couldn't win. Just for our self benefit. Perfect. So what's the final score? Two, five, seven. Who has seven? Who ended up winning?
Oh, we took him self off. All right. So we get a we get a solo solo for the winner. Yeah, I mean, this is I think the fifth year that we've done this. And Tyler's one wants. And I've won now I think four of the five. We may have been doing this even longer than that, which means I've won five of six or six of seven. However, we won. How far, however far back we want to go. But all I know is that I know way more ball than the two people who just ran away from the screen because they're so shamed of of of how bad they did at this. So it's a shame. It is a shame. But you know, at least one of us, at least one of us, you know, knows what we're talking about on the show. I hate him. So he left. No, I can.
Okay. Sorry. I'm looking back on with him. I don't want to be on this show. Yeah. Congrats, Jim. You were the biggest loser because we all proved that we don't know ball. So you're just the smartest of the idiots. I feel like it would have got closest to the wind total. Those should be worth like 10 points. Oh, you know, do we want to bring that up to? Because that is how we end the show. We do talk about the wind totals. So the pie. We use that as a tiebreaker that that we do make sure that they the tie breaker is a wind total. There is no there is no ties to break. There aren't, but it would be nice to talk about this. No, it's like we can talk about it. Yeah, we can talk about it. Yeah. Yeah. So the Pirates 182 games this year. They did. But 82 and 80. So the closest is Tyler at 83 one game off one game off. So I think what that does is you get deducted one point, right? Because you're a game off.
So you're at you're at one now. Unfortunately. So Tyler, there's that one point. I'd be at two. Thank you very much. I got Dawn Kelly right to. Right. But you're one off on the wind total. So your two goes to one. And then I was at 84 wins. So I unfortunately get deducted two points. So I go from five to three. But Jim Mr. Gangho Jim. Mr. Just got up. Leave in Henry Davis. He said 87 wins. And he was off by five. So that means Jim actually goes from seven points to two. So how works. I think it is. So technically, I guess I guess I'm your champion. So like so thank you fellas. Thank you, everyone. I appreciate it. You know what? I'm going to give a speech. I'll let my work speak for itself.
He hasn't shut up. Does he? No, he doesn't. And it's actually it's sad. It's quite sad that he's doing this mental gymnastics to try to give himself his first ever win. You know, like these the two on the screen right now, these are the two people who have ever won this competition. Yeah, we have banners. We've got flags fly forever. Yeah, Tornado has no flags. No, he's got that UCF banner. Yeah, Tornado's claiming the national championship. Yeah, that's that's what that is. Unbelievable. I feel like I had a flag here somewhere that's going to leave it. I don't I don't have a flag anywhere. All right. That was fun. That was fun though. It was fun. I do like going back and reviewing this and it was fun. It was interesting.
I like going back and yeah, just kind of seeing how much smarter I am than than you guys. But no, that was a I felt like we did all right. At least I did all right. We had a really good September. Our April May was terrible. Yeah, we went what over the first six questions. Yeah, we started off real slow. Yeah, then we turned it on. Yeah. Um, how about player of the month awards came out earlier this week. Mason Montgomery, reliever of the month for September, Jared Jones, picture of the month for September. Both well deserved. I think Mason Montgomery actually had a better August than September. Maybe even a better July than September too. But he racked up a bunch of saves.
And I think that's kind of what what did it. I think he had 11 saves in September. I think it was 12. Yeah, I was 11 or 12. Um, that was 11 412 in September. So yeah, I mean, in Jerry Jones, just in unreal month. Um, ERA under one 40 strikeouts and 29 innings, like just just outstanding work from Jones. But yeah, very, very well deserved. Uh, winners there. Pirate had a few. I mean, so because they had what those two. I don't think they had any other pictures of the month. I don't think Ashcraft ends up getting one. He was close. I know. I mean, I think he had a really good April. I think he, you know what? It's funny is I remember Cody making a graphic. Let me see. So it must have been schemes.
I'm March. It's first start one of counted because I was March. And he had a ridiculous run in April. So I bet it was schemes for April. And then Volta is one rookie of the month in July. Uh, George says that that we do a good job, but we stick up for Don Kelly too much. So I'm sorry, George. I actually didn't. I mean, I don't know. I thought I said at the end of the year that they should fire Don Kelly. I don't know what I said. So I guess I need to be even more. I said, maybe I wasn't. Maybe I just didn't yell. I've been lined with keeping him, but I'd be if they decided to. Yeah. Okay. So yeah, it was three. So, so schemes did not win it. Um, but Volta is one in July. Jones and Montgomery in September.
So maybe that's what it was. Maybe it was as Marlins. Plader of the month he was making. Rookie of the month. Yeah. So I do remember creating a graphic for somebody. So most of that. Well, I know we were thinking Montgomery would win August. Because Montgomery didn't give up a run in August, but I think they gave it to the Brewers guy. I forgot his name. They ended up giving it to Trevor Meagull in August. There you go. So, yeah. Um, trying to think of anything else happened this week to kind of talk about. I think that's what it was. Staff it seems to be staying intact. And then we talked about that a little bit on Monday.
I will be surprised if everybody comes back though. Like, I don't know if you can just run it back 100%. When you come out the year before and say, you know, period full stop. I don't know if I don't know if the entire staff is going to be back. And if there is a casualty, it's just it's going to be someone kind of low on the total pool. It's not going to be, you know, it's not going to be Kelly. It's not going to be chairing today. It's not going to be any of the, you know, assistant GM's or anything like that. Like it'll be. It'll be a position coach or a base coach. But I could see, I could see somebody not returning just based off of. Just because. Yeah. I also like. I wonder this too. And obviously it would be a different reason. But like I wonder with the Mariners, parting ways. If like Christopher Negron.
That's a good, that's a good guess. So Negron was was we'll see how forever is he may be up for that managerial job. I know there's no more part of the staff in some way or something. So. Well, I know that like he's very highly regarded around the league too. And I could see the pirates also. Like I mean, I've heard some people suggest this, but like Don Kelly having someone there with managerial experience, you know, where it's Negron doesn't have that. So, so maybe maybe that's something that happens. I could, I could see Negron definitely being in the running for that Mariners job though. Maybe a little younger than Jean Lamont. Yeah, that was yeah, like no more, no more like 80 year old Jean Lamont. I'm sure Jean Lamont is super valuable when it comes to like Jean Lamont knows more about managing a baseball team than than any of us will ever know. But yeah, I'll know if Jean Lamont's ready for the grind of 162 games season. I think that was just like a chance to help me.
Yeah, let the man rest. Although Jean was at spring training this year. He was he was down there in Bradenton hanging out. Right. Yeah. So I agree. Like I'm sure there'll be something that happens. But it does not only for the most part, they're pretty much running it back. Yeah, outside of that Arizona fall league starting. So that's also kind of cool. We'll be as in we talk about will be down there in about three weeks. I have our get to know series coming up to so we'll be talking in it, you know, getting to know a lot of those guys are going down there. So those interviews will be coming out here shortly to lead up to the Arizona fall league when we're down there for. But again, we're excited with it. The 21st to the 24th will be there. So we'll be down there 24 21st through the 24th opening day for the Arizona fall league is Saturday.
So the Glendale Desert dogs kick off the year against the salt river rafters at 330. So that'll be the first game there. So some news to on the Arizona fall. Like you mentioned, we're going to be doing the get to know you series. So stay tuned for those we've got. We've got interviews lined up with pretty much everybody going down there. But just some news. It hasn't been reported or anything like that. But Cameron Kishok, who was the Pirates 12th round pick last year. He's dealing with a rib injury. So he will not be going to the Arizona fall league. Brian Mena. He will be taking his place. So, yeah, he's he's he's someone who the Pirates took in the was mean a minor league rule of five guy last year. Yeah. So minor league rule five guy spent the year in Greensboro, like put up kind of man numbers. But that's also just what most pictures doing Greensboro. So I'll be looking forward to least checking them out a little bit.
I don't know much about him. Well, we'll find out. We'll find out. But yeah, Cameron Kishok will not be going to Arizona. So that's a little bit of a bummer. He was somebody I was looking forward to watching. Yeah, he's interesting. But oh well, it is what it is. But yeah, we'll be down there and. We'll be playing. I was watching those braves and Phillies. This braves Phillies series been wild apparently. Yeah, both of those games have been crazy. Like just big, big home runs being hit. And how about the white socks just quickly disposing of the Astros. They've got divine intervention on their side, too. Did you see that the Pope like gave him a letter before game one. I see that. Yeah, he lettering was like I'm I'm bestowing my heavenly blessings on you and all of your like like like so like the white socks have like literally have like God on their side right now.
So yeah, we'll see how that goes. Let's keep them on their side because they get a they need to make quick work this next series as well. That's not even like us. That's not all this time, but I don't know what happened to Jim. The white socks face to go. Do we have the vine like that was that the Pope did the Pope take you away from us. Our blessings have been answered. Yeah, I think my internet just went out for like a quick second. We thought the Pope was on our side. But the Yankees are up three one right now on the red box. So if the Yankees win today, and that's in the bottom of the sixth inning, the red socks will be done too. I want the red socks to win.
I'm not going to lie. I know I kind of joked about it on Twitter, but like, just give me give me Yankees Dodgers to juggernauts. I'm going to win again, and then we can go into this lockout and CBA with a nice clean narrative of we got to do something about this. Clearly with you. Yeah, I get it. I'm like, I raised one in somehow. Yeah, like what if it's like raise brewers like because I mean, obviously, the competitive balance thing. That's not why the owners want a salary cap in a floor. That's not what they want. Like they want to increase the values of their organizations. That's the main reason for this. But it's behind this disguise of competitive balance. And you know, a brewer's raised world series isn't going to change the owners, you know, the ways of thinking or anything like that. But it is going to change kind of the tune of the players association and maybe some fans out there. So I just don't want to hear that.
Really? It is much on our side as possible. Give me dodging. I just mean pirates fans. Whatever makes it's better. Any long picks for the world series here because through Fandall we got. I kind of like the brazen the fillies at plus 16 hundred plus 1700 just. Just to get there in the dance you never know. Well, the problem is. I'm going to hold off and see who wins that. But I do and actually Alex talked about this on his off beat the other day. You know, it's like kind of dark horse per se is like the fillies like they're not going into this hot. But like that's a team that can just turn it on. And as you saw today. And I mean, like, I mean, I do like the fillies. I do like the fillies. It's hard to bet against Dodgers. Well, that's a thing. But the money is what the fillies think too. So the thing the fillies really have going for him is like a short series.
They can roll out, you know, Sanchez, Wheeler, Lazardo. Like they've got. They've got the arms to do it. Their bullpen isn't necessarily all that good. Like their best reliever blew the game for him, you know, in game one. So yeah, we'll see. I'm just I keep going back to like that Dodgers roster and like, I don't know. They just. Yeah. They look unbeatable. I mean, like the rotation, they're four man rotation of Yamamoto glass now, scoobal and snail. I mean, like what do you do? You call the Pope. Yeah, like the Pope's the only one who's got a shot there. What if the Pope just gave every team but the Dodgers a letter? So, and we will Smith is back to so like they're actually kind of healthy.
Otani's back. And I don't know. I just I don't see anybody beating them as good as a season that Milwaukee had this year. I just don't see it. I don't know. First. I mean, they're built to the upholstery. That's why they only really care about the regular season. Everyone just go on the I.O. Like it's fine. You're all injured. That's fine. Just be injured. Call it low by October 1st. Yes. Bring training star September 1st. And let's go boys. They schedule in season vacations. Right. I will Smith was in Louisville last week. Like they just hung. Yeah, like they just hung a big Will Smith banner. And in slide of Henry Davis locker room. No, but it was like Will Smith day. They they unveiled like the Will Smith banner. And he was there for it was like the governor was in town for it. The mayor. Yeah. And Will Smith was there.
Hmm. They're not going to hang anything for Dolvin rushing. Well, the difference with Will is. He's actually he's from here too. Like he went to school here, but he's also from here. So he's kind of got that. How I should know that it'll lock back going on to. Next up is Joe Adele's Joe Adele's banner. Okay. All right. Let's get out of here. Yeah. But for a we'll be back again. Monday morning. Buckle brew. I guess. Yeah. We'll have off the Friday stuff. Yeah. Offbeat tomorrow offbeat Friday. There may be something out coming out this weekend. I'm not sure.
