Scottish author and physician
Conan Doyle was a Scottish author, physician, and military officer. He is best known for creating the character of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1859 and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He worked as a ship's doctor and later as a general practitioner before turning to writing full-time. Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, was published in 1887 and was a huge success. He went on to write 64 more Sherlock Holmes stories and several other novels and plays. Doyle was knighted in 1902 for his services to literature and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1902. He died in 1930 at the age of 71.
