Jonas Mekas was a Lithuanian-American filmmaker, artist, and writer. He was a key figure in the American avant-garde film movement and is known for his experimental and documentary films. Mekas was born in Lithuania in 1930 and immigrated to the United States in the 1950s. He began making films in the 1950s and went on to direct over 100 films throughout his career. Mekas was also a prolific writer and published numerous books of poetry and essays. He was a prominent figure in the New York City art scene and was friends with many notable artists and writers, including Andy Warhol and Allen Ginsberg. Mekas died in 2012 at the age of 83.
