King of Mercia
Offa of Mercia was a king of Mercia who ruled from 757 to 796. He is best known for his military campaigns and his construction of Offa's Dyke, a defensive earthwork that marked the border of his kingdom. Offa was also a patron of the arts and architecture, and his court was renowned for its scholars and poets. He died in 796 and was succeeded by his son Ecgfrith.
