Roy J. Plunkett was an American chemist and inventor who worked for DuPont. He is best known for inventing Teflon, a non-stick coating. Plunkett was born in 1910 in Oklahoma, USA. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Oklahoma. After completing his education, Plunkett worked for DuPont, where he conducted research on refrigerants. In 1946, he accidentally discovered Teflon while trying to create a new refrigerant. Plunkett's discovery revolutionized the manufacturing of non-stick coatings and has had a significant impact on various industries. He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1965 for his contributions to science. Plunkett passed away in 1994 at the age of 83.
