Uncle Tom was a fictional character created by Harriet Beecher Stowe in her 1852 novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. The character is a slave who is sold to a plantation owner and becomes a loyal servant. The novel was a powerful anti-slavery statement and helped to fuel the abolitionist movement. Uncle Tom has become a cultural icon and is often referenced in popular culture.
