Missionary and shoemaker
William Carey was a British Christian missionary and shoemaker. He is considered one of the founders of modern missions. Carey was born in 1761 in Leicestershire, England. He became a shoemaker, but later felt called to missionary work. Carey traveled to India in 1793, where he worked to translate the Bible into various languages. He founded the Serampore Missionary College in India, which became a center for missionary training. Carey was known for his humility and his commitment to serving the poor. He died in 1834 in Calcutta, India.
