How was your view of things from upstairs?
Like the pace, I thought the compete was good. Skating for both teams, I thought we'd close quick. There was a lot of good stuff in the game. You're a cool player in this first game, since November, what were your initial impressions of how he looked on the ice and how he played today? You know, I thought this game went on. I thought he looked more and more comfortable. Made some good plays. I had a couple great chances. I think there's opportunities. There was a few more plays out there he could have made. But I thought overall, I thought he skated really well. He was noticeable. You put him on a line with Sam Carrick and Beck Mellon. So I had those three kind of offset or complement each other. I think there's going to be different places he plays. But when you look at that, you've got to go like Carrick. He played really well for us last year. We've got Mell who can get in on the 4th check and really disrupt. And skates well. And you look at what Coolie can bring.
I think he's just working his way into our lineup. There's different aspects of what other guys that he plays with can bring. I was just talking to Beck actually. What's it like when you have a guy in his role, a disruptor, as the kind of speed he can use? I think it's really hard in the opposition for sure. One of the fastest guys in the team in the North-South. That type of game. And he can get on your quick. He can close on the other team quick. And he can still make plays. I think we saw him score some real nice goals last year. We saw him make some real nice plays. Real good penalty killer for us. I think when the opposition stand point, he's a type of guy that you don't want to be on the ice against. How much is the Oslin defense and Quinn line? Like in the first few days here, how much is that? Looking like you helped to.
Yeah, well, I thought that they had to puck a lot and made a lot of great plays today. And you know, I think you're looking at three incredibly skilled players. With a mixture of speed and you know, Oslin, Ocezi, I so well. So I thought we got exactly what we thought we were going to get. A lot of opportunities, you know, I think they were what are the best line on the ice? They all in showcase some of what he could do. So some of the aggressiveness and shipping is out there. Yeah, I thought the clothes really well. You know, I think you're looking at a guy that's trying to get used to how we play or want to play and how we close and I thought he closed in a lot of place. I thought offensively trying to jump up in that third period where, you know, their team needed a goal. He joined on several occasions where I thought probably deferred to maybe a little bit of a
too much of a fancy play where I thought he probably could have delivered. But a lot to like there for sure. I think the part that defensively about closing very similar bow and then getting up ice using his legs. He's got great legs and it's definitely one of the strongest assets of his game is using those. What do you think of Jack? Jack went out there today. I like Jack. Yeah. All kinds of chances. A goal of probably going to have, no reality could have had three or four goals. You know, they had one bounce off a stick there right in the slot and then he had back to back chances where he was trying to deek and end up scoring a goal. But I like them. Do you think he's looks different at all?
This camp, you know, compared to last year, like another step maybe. Yeah, I do. I think he has made another step. I think, you know, this is just a small sample size, but the first two practices in today were real good days for him. Ryan Johnson's a guy that he made the team out of camp last year. And anyway, he went to Rochester. Now he looked at the death chart and you kind of wonder where he fits in. What's the next step for him as far as his development? Well, I think, you know, any player gets to really decide that. You know, he is a guy that has great lives. I think when you're a defenseman again, it comes down to what are you giving up inside the game. And I think you'll make that decision for us. Obviously, you used word depth. Yeah, I think with where we're at in the organization, he's proven that he can come up here and play games. To be a consistent player, a lot of times is based on how well you're playing.
Defensively. And if you're if you're using your skills, probably that maybe another guy doesn't have. And when I look at Ryan, I look at unbelievable skater. Here's a guy that can come up and play and we know he can skate with the best players. He can skate with the top players in the league. Then it's how do you defend? But what is your decision making? And I think there's times he's really good. You've got two days of training camp. You've got the first scrimmage. How do you and your staff use this data and the observation? Everything you've collected and applied to preparing for the first preseason game one day? Again, you know, part of campus is to take a look at different lines. And I think we will still take a look at different players playing in different situations. We've got penalty killing decisions to make with, you know, who's going to be your top killers? We're going to try different personnel there. A lot of decisions on the back end.
I think we've seen some of the guys we like and we know what works for us, especially with Dulling and Samuelson. So it's really who's going to play with the one power. And I think there's, you can argue for one or two or different guys that can step in there from, you know, you can go crevier, Timons, you can go to Zellway, you're going to have the week of options. So we've got lots of decisions to make and we'll use tomorrow's a day off. And then we've got four games in six days that will help us make those decisions. There were no penalties in this game today. I said, if I design? No, I'm not going to criticize the referee in this time.
