Ultrarunning had itself a week.
We start with Camille Herron, OnlyFans, accountability, athlete culture, and the increasingly blurry line between “empowerment” and just putting your ass on the internet for money.
Then we finally behave ourselves and talk about actual ultrarunning.
One of our coached athletes finishes the Georgia Jewel 100 on just three days of training per week—while still prioritizing his job, family, and real life. We break down why execution matters more than chasing mileage, why Georgia Jewel is nastier than it looks on paper, and why heat strategy can make or break your race.
We get into carrying more water than you think you need, ice, cooling, hats, airflow, gear preferences, and the very scientific principle of not cooking yourself alive in the Georgia sun.
Then it’s on to Last Soul Ultras, backyard racing, last-man-standing formats, preserving the roots of the sport without becoming the grumpy old people yelling from the porch, and whether the future eventually includes an eccentric billionaire making people run around an island until only one survives.
Probably not.
Hopefully not.
This is the Ultra Crewed Podcast, so no promises.

Okay, to make sure that that's recording that's recording this is recording everything should be recording so we'll just do this real quick Bam and that's sound of an our all-ch group podcast Thank you for tuning in this week my name is John I'm your host and with me as always is the fabulous BMFJ Beam of J if you could just go ahead and do me a quick favor and pull that hair back off your shoulders So it looks like you have a tank top on. Thank you very much This is a family show for that's tuning into you to YouTube and we don't we don't need any sort of Parallels or corollaries with you and the desert queen which is I think just what we should is that what we're gonna call her I think that's what we're gonna call ham ultimately hey listen This is the all-ch group podcast we are a show about ultra running in life And we try to lean real heavy on the ultra running bit. That's what draws you in But if you pay attention you play close close attention We're gonna talk a little bit about life and we're gonna try to overlay these two topics So that we pull the genuine life stuff out of it because that's the more important thing in the world
You're gonna run some altars you're gonna run some races, but your life is gonna go on far far longer And be much more beneficial and quite quite more difficult than the any ultra running event ever will So thank you very much for tuning in this week this week's episode of the ultra-ch group podcast We are hosts of the mid-state mile race directors ultra running coaches. We do this dang thing We up in this business of ultra running We up in it. We all up in it and it is All-drink we're not the we're not doing anything else No, what do you mean? Well, I'm just saying we're not hoeing you out on the internet's I know no we haven't gotten so desperate that we need to start only fans accounts I love a free agent. I'm putting it out there I'm sorry are you a free agent my free agent? Not in relationships babe just like I'm available Oh, spread your new career path. No, we're not doing that. We're not doing any but whole spread in the backyard Well, I'm just saying if uh, you know, you know, somebody that knows somebody that needs somebody
Yeah I've enjoyed posting my my strengths and weaknesses on that What John is saying is he's looking for a new career path if anyone is opening available I think that's more direct way to get to it. I don't think He violates So if nobody's listening what are we doing this for? You know what I mean? And if so, man, what are we doing this for nobody's listening? But yeah All right. Yeah, okay back at it this week Yeah, I mean, I'm just saying like you could reach out to Camille and see how that's going for her Her new endeavor where she is Listen, okay, we have ultra running things to talk about but obviously we're gonna start off the top of the hour Why don't you break us break it down for us, Miss Jones What's happening out there the biggest news in ultra running this week obviously It's been rumored for a hot minute you touched on it last week, but I think even since last week's episode and uh Today
You've done a deep dive Uh, yeah, so and to me fair Camille herons not the only ultra running athlete that has either so uh Sabrina Stanley's also in that night. I know who that is She's really well like western states and stuff like that. She she had some videos She's uh going through some stuff now. I think she recently had cancer and some other things, but unfortunately Unfollowed her Because only fans also sponsors her and I guess You know, listen, I'm not a conservative individual by any means and I have lived a wild ass life but That's just not what I want for our society on a moral level Uh do whatever you want to do your grown-ass adult, but I'm good as as I said in my post if you hadn't read it go read it. I'm not gonna Deep deep dive back into that, but Camille has taken to her
Running platform and is promoting what she's doing Like it and saying all this and selling it as this empowerment and I'm sorry adult sex work and doing porn essentially in your backyard is not empowering like I believe in all the sexuality stuff be out there whatever um But as soon as you start taking money to spread your butt cheeks we've We've moved from empowerment embracing your body Whatever we've now moved to filming adult content and Like I'm fucking good And you know she said this is at the encouragement of her husband you mean the same guy that was editing Why we have to blame it on the dude? Is this she said it we just circling back it's a it's a guy's fault is this no because actually the guys have been really supportive of my Nope stop she said this is at the encouragement of my husband That's the same nonsense like Lindsey Kylancy murdered her children. It was it was his fault
This is the same thing I don't know that only fans and that's same thing but same some of the same same logic Same thought trajectory as it's the man's fault You know this man who and she said has she has entrusted with her career He's done a piss poor job here recently You know y'all just lost that lawsuit where you were trying to sue uh Canadian trail running magazine for defamation because They broke a story about your husband editing other female ultra runners wikipedia pages To try and make you look better. They which all of that was true I just you know and now this man's like yes, let's open up a ranch. Yes. Take nude photos in the backyard Like do these videos. Well, you know what honestly any supportive husband is gonna be proud of his woman And he's gonna want to show her off to a certain degree. Oh, well, and so yeah, let's not let's not pin it on him I What I can't I can't even It's just not and not for nothing. I
You You very key verbiage came out of your mouth hole Empowerment and this is the problem with women Girls tread lightly. I got listen. I'm being real careful here But this is the number one problem and it's it's women's empowerment Because men do not have this shit Men have accountability When a group of men get together it's for accountability It's for to say hey you need to step up step aside step down You're you're kind of being not a good representation of the species and this isn't one of those like hey you have to like Run for jump high to be a man type of thing like there's different like some guys aren't cutting down trees and rebuild an engine Right like some guys there's different shades of it Yeah, but there's some like hey that stand up be a leader like don't disrespect women like be present Like fathers and enroll models like that's that's the basic manhood shit like don't step out on your wife or put pictures over on the internet like
Yeah, that is like when men get together It's always always always accountability. There's no men's empowerment in existence Like never once as a group of men gotten together said we need to empower this dude We need to embrace him as a brother. Yes, he fucked up. Yes. He's been stepping out on his wife It's her fault not his like we need to circle this guy and power him So that he knows we support him because he's a man No, never once there wasn't like oh I Didn't know that That Dave was like that Nye kicking it with Dave no more Hey Trevor, do you know Dave was like that? Nye Nate Nate said the same thing we ain't Nate and Bill and George and Frank went Nah, we ain't messing with Dave anymore. Yeah, like that's that's that's how men men We we use accountability and and somewhere along the line listen you You can not like what I'm saying But you can't disagree with it because there's there's no balance to that in womenhood
There's no balance to that in girlhood. We teach boys the same thing accountability. This is what you're supposed to do This is how you're supposed to act like This is it. This is the roadmap and there's no there's no balance to that and y'all side of the fence It is it is empowerment when you see something that doesn't pass the smell test you go that's our sister We don't understand it. We're gonna support her And I and there's some validity to like Supporting and going hey, we don't we don't know what you go been going through over there But we're sorry that you've been going through it and like we're here But then it that's not enough and you go she did it we stand by her we you know and It all can kill each other's chill like y'all can girl can kill her kids and it's like she is one of us. We are her And you empower the it's it's always like the lowest common denominator of behavior You just kind of keep seeing how far down can you go
To empower listen, I think you can find I don't disagree with some of what I think we talked about this a bit lost the plot of it We talked about this on our own. I'm saying that too much lately lost the plot. Yes. Yeah, I'll stop. Yeah But there is A lack of it's not all women, but it's always women So hey, there's a lot of shitty guys out there there aren't you know what paper sex let bachelor parties get way out of hand and do a bunch of other men's accountability does It kicks them out of the accountability club. It doesn't go. This is what this is what bill needed this week No, he's burying a shrew she doesn't understand some of them do Some of them do I'm on those are we dating the same guy pages? I'm not well I see a lot of shitty man behavior. I don't and I you know why I don't see shitty man behavior Because I don't get her I don't hang out with shitty men because if you're a shitty man, then we're not cool
Like we're not hanging out. I don't want none of it No, hey, I agree But I'm not my circle about like women if you're being a shitty human and always a victim or starting shit lying manipulating being a drama queen like I don't have any space for you But I also very much Believe in accountability and that's how you empower yourself you have to yes Like I think you're a rarity. Yeah, because most women will engage in the like the tady behaviors that can you believe What Jessica did oh my gosh, I mean and you'll still hang out like you know what I mean like oh no She's horrible. It's hang out. Let's say hey, do you want to have lunch next week? Yes, call me girl like y'all be doing that kind of shit too I don't want to hang out with anyone that's backstabbed me or I see backstabbing other people like I don't I don't have any interest Nah Not gonna do it. Well, I think no, I'm not into that. Yeah, it's a lot of that high school middle school mentality that
Somehow ends up transferring on Into adulthood and with all of those things can be Lifted home with your yearbook, you know, nobody needs any of that shit, but No, just this whole thing and it really you got me just thinking about like that's You know women have a hard enough time not being sexualized while still embracing Their divine feminine and their feminality and really like Celebrating their bodies and doing all these things, but again once you start paying to do sexual things You you've crossed over and you've lost what's in power and what I hate and here's the thing Camille's been on my nerves for quite some time but Before when I first you know over a decade ago when I first found ultra running got into it like it was incredible She was able to do and she was a big advocate for women and said she wants to be a woman's role model now the more I have learned about her fucking ridiculousness
Absolutely not please take a seat I do not want you inspiring women or being a role model, but This is like the furthest of No, so as soon as your career falls apart because your husband tanks it and you're not doing what you're supposed to you Is this anybody to talk about disabled athlete by the way? Don't even get me up. That's the other fucking thing like I don't think it's your own word no in her only fans and all her bios She no, I'm just honest like I don't like everyone. It's not very empowering of you. I don't care I'm not here to empower. I'm here to be honest and accountable uh Like I'll lift you up if you're doing something worth lifting up and if you're doing something that you need to be knocked down a peg I will knock that stool out from underneath you. I do not give a fuck like You should not be up on a high horse and then knock the stool down I don't I don't know if I am a stool knockered down. I think I'm gonna let you While back and forth and fall
Okay, fair now I think that's be yeah, that's you know, and here I was thinking about it's like it takes Like every you know, I think I've said this before every now and then like you see different versions of people And everybody's kind of getting a different version. It takes a lot to like Protects somebody's Reputation that if has tried to discredit yours Oh, yeah, I won't do that You will and we have because I've shut my mouth and that's what and that's what I'm saying and that's I've not lifted them up I have I have shut my mouth and said Either nothing or say my opinion different from that so good for you Okay, I got lost in that thought there's I will say not for nothing. Yeah, it is incredibly hard. I believe For women to to try to exist In a sport that is so raw and open and try to
um Do that in an authentic way Without selling themselves short or having to glamorize or highlight or shrink You know Their personalities or or whatever, but we've we've got this this area of life and in social media where ability uh Equals credibility and that isn't the case. Yeah, you know Yeah, just because somebody is is capable of doing one thing doesn't mean that they are credible and giving And doing many things or or leading you um So I'll say that and unfortunately we we are just surrounded by people that You know can run far and and we go they run far. I want to run far I'm gonna do what they do or I need to listen to them or or people that can run far and they go Hey, you need to listen to me because I can run for and you peel back the curtain you go holy shit
You Should not be talking to anyone Or giving anyone advice whatsoever. This is a disaster like you've gotten here on smoke and mirrors And some people are just simply more capable than other people like some people have a natural talent and ability And and that doesn't mean that they are capable of leading coaching guiding either Like you know not all that the best football players haven't been the best football coaches Yeah, and if you look at the best football coaches historically Yeah, they played the game, but they weren't the best at it ever You know, there's a reason Michael Jordan is in a basketball coach Right the best basketball coaches. We're not the best basketball players Very similar, but when we see it in this sport we just it's this automatic transference Yeah, like I can run far so now I can I can tell you how yeah, and that's just not how like that's not how the game is played or At least that's not that's not the reality of any other profession I'll say that but also I'm gonna say I'm gonna say this
Like there's plenty of women out here's that are And ultra running is is sometimes You know, it's really raw and it's really bare. Yeah, it's a lot of the exposing that goes on in this sport both physically mentally and emotionally Like there's there's not a lot of of of curtains at at an ultra a long one. Yeah um But the women that don't want to be glamorized for their bodies will also Be really excited when the shirtless boys come right come by I've seen some of that you know, I mean that's out there So we can't be mad and be like hey don't sexualize me when you're showing up and then sexualizing You know what I mean? I think it's good for the goose good for the gander. That's what I'm trying to say I I'm not gonna speak and I'll maybe just don't do that of that because it's on both sides. It is I'm It you know like I how about just be good to one another Like take other people as human and just like respect them for what they can do it who they are what their character is
And do that first You know I know that's that's what drew us together. It's just our connection on a human level. I wasn't cuz you thought I was cute Sure, it wasn't cuz you weren't trying to I didn't though. That's the thing is I did not do that. I went nope Mm-hmm Look way be respectful. So that's what I did Well look at where we are now Yeah, woohoo No, it's uh I don't know. It just it got me thinking a lot on Just I was probably the only one that was looking away being reliable Just not for nothing The sport and you know also athletes as they I'm not gonna say they age out of their prime but like what is next for athletes in this sport when You know your record start falling and you are not it's gonna be a tension that you once got I think the only logical solution is that we go ancient Rome
Ancient Greece And the retired gladiators are brought in as is uh, you know Conkybines or whatever I guess that's where only fans is coming in that's that's what it is like that's here we go Yeah, like you had the genetic makeup to run far Come lay with my wife so that my children will run far That's Anyways, we should we should get off this I said a lot of what I have to say but I have I said what I said You know, I have some complex feelings around it because I don't believe in slut shaming or kink shaming or any of those things but I don't believe this falls under that this is Nah, there's some there's some shame that should Should be going on out there once you start producing that adult content like listen good Here's the here's the thing. There's like I don't believe it. No some actions are shameful I don't just agree with that but you should carry some shame around it I just
You know Down the road How is she I don't think this is a good transition for for her. I don't think this is I know honesty wild wild week and women's sports From from a gambling website to poo poos to only fans What is like y'all don't have a hope in a prayer there's no one stepping up. That's a normal human out there on your side of the aisle I there's a lot of people on the normal side of the aisle that's unfortunately just not how social media works And that is unfortunate. I just This is the last thing I'll say on Camille I Feel for her greatly Um, just as a female like I believe that men should look after their women And that they should put them in a place to be protected and to not make you say men should put women in their place
No in a place to be protected um, and especially As she's someone that's like whenever people disagree with her don't bully me don't bully me don't want yeah She does not have thick enough skin to have her ass cheeks spread on the internet. She just doesn't and Regardless of what she may say In the comments that get edited because her husband goes through and removes all the negative comments on her IG and Facebook and hide some It's um It's going to take a toll on her you can only hear people criticize you criticize your body criticize It's a bad thing. What I'm gonna say is I think it's sad that she has someone in her life that views her as a paycheck and a cash cow rather than As a woman a wife and someone that he needs to protect because had he viewed her as something other than that He wouldn't have been editing Wikipedia stuff He wouldn't be encouraging this knowing that like she just doesn't she doesn't have it like if you're
gonna be Filming yourself dancing in the shower naked like you got to have a thick skin You you gotta be willing to like hear the stuff coming back at you and she just doesn't like it's going to affect her mentally Because she doesn't have that bus bay bad bitch About her like she doesn't Not according to her recent social media posts No You know and apparently she's disabled. So why are we exploiting a disabled athlete We're not I'm not part of this I don't have anything to do that. I'm not in it. I'm not in it. I'm not in it. She ran herself as Uh Disabled did she did that With the fuck ever. I think it's just weird It's uh, obviously not a part of the culture. I want to be in no or be a part of so I just hate to even see that be In the sport there's enough crazy motherfucker out here that I don't definitely doesn't need to be in the sport I'll say that is it isn't really probably need to be in society all that much and it does certainly doesn't need to be in the sport
And you know, I don't know if we got to come over the new a new policy No filming Spicy content at midstate But yes, that's just um, I don't know Yeah, no Nothing I rocks finally addressed the shitty situation And I guess she actually Disqualified herself or actually been a serial pooper that there's rumors of her poop in it london I did not hear that heard the rumor. I hadn't seen like the confirmation of her poop I mean, that's hey, that's how you're winning. That's just a strategy. I'll just poo on everything Yeah, that's just horrible. Hey, that's just we We know how this function society that's not it. Let's talk about Georgia dual. Yeah, let's talk about ultra running a little actual ultra running Shall we yes, we've wasted enough time on nonsense The Georgia dual 100 went down this weekend and I am stoked. I'm not gonna call my homie out
But I am going to shout out my man big props. We've been coaching a guy for this For a hot minute ran the 50 last year Coastam for that came to me after 50 said I think we'll run the 100 next year. I went hey, that's probably a bad idea And he executed the 50 really well. Yeah, he did a great job. He did a great job in his training block He he ran really really tough race and but I was like hey just you need to think of this isn't it isn't just twice as hard as the 100 it is It is twice as hard as the 100 and then probably another third on top of that Yeah, so there are a lot of really great 100s out there There are a lot of good 100s in this region like let's explore What your options are before we commit we got some time and he said yeah awesome Let's do that and then sure enough when it came time trained for his 100 anyway Hey, I want to run the Georgia dual and I said giddy up. Let's go. Yeah, because that's you that's what you're gonna Get from us on this side Of a coaching of experience of a partnership because like we're gonna tell you the reality of what it is
Oh, yeah, but when you say this is what I want to do like we're all on board Like load up the bus we're going to fun town. Yeah, we'll figure out how to like it and and and hats off Hats off. This is one of the first years. We've not been down to the Georgia dual in a Since we've been together I think there's one of your you and I didn't but most of the time we go together and so it's really weird not to be there and I wanted to be there and Life just be life enough here in Franklin lately My goodie bag is swollen up about three four times as much as it usually is because it just keeps getting kicked in the nuts By life life's boot is is just making my boys purple So I wanted to be there. It wasn't gonna work out and I and so Was really just I mean he got it done and he got it done so freaking well and just such a Brutal race. Yeah, this was the hottest year on record that they had had and this race is It's much harder in person than it is on paper. I don't care that it was the hottest year on record
It's the hottest year on record for Georgia dual every time they have Georgia dual Because it keeps getting hotter and even if isn't the quote unquote hottest year on record What was it 93 instead of 98? Yeah, like what difference does it make? Well, I think they read it like feels like temperature of 103 103 as opposed to 101 or 102 like this is what I'm saying Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, like we're not squabbling over Half a dozen degrees out here like Georgia dual is gonna be miserably hot It is surface of the sun hot. It is devil's but whole level hot out there It is year after year after year it is like and it's gonna be 100% so just dude. I'm so stoked with how he handled it Looked really really good at the finish line just like fresh as a daisy I think he looked better at the finish of his 100 he sent me a picture than he did at the finish of his 50 And just well executed and I'll say three days a week Yep Three days a week he had a very unique schedule that he could
Adhere to and it was always able to train three days a week that was it and now a weekend Yeah, this is what I love about this guy is that he's that I have a job I have a family But that's what can I do around that and so we did everything around those two things And this is what this is what men the kind of abilities like hey you need to show up as a husband first Let me told them not a job and provide things you know, I mean like that's that's often then you can do your runny stuff afterwards We don't promote the running above the life um And so three days a week but he executed He could he could probably write a textbook if you want to figure out how to how to execute a long run You know what I mean like And you're struggling and trying to figure it out. I'm gonna send you to run with this guy He's gonna keep you like step by step Such a great great job well execution Earned it every single step of the way didn't do with high-mollege didn't do it with fancy You know whatever's but just took the programming and listen to it weekend week out executed really well And then when it came time to race He got it done. He had not ran
Over what 25 I think was the longest run he had ran over 20 farther than 25 miles since last year when he ran 50 Yep and nailed his first 100 He did and a lot of that because he did the training he showed up and he only missed a handful of workouts in the 1% yeah Once he had covid yeah, and then I think that went on vacation whatever Anyways, just really Executed training well and I will say because it is only three days. I mean he didn't have a lot of variety He could really only do the core stuff um, and that was You know we had some Are you okay? Are you gonna die or you choked up an emotional like you need a little backpatter But yeah, now anyways, it was just It was really impressive and you don't have to run five or six days a week You do need to do what is him? And execute you have a mindset for it and he really did we tell the people this all the time people ask about like how do you
Try for this how you train for that what he's like listen We coach people to run hundreds on 30 35 miles a week all time Yep, three days a week give me three days a week you can run her mouse and they go well listen you You got to give me those three days. Yeah, you got you you got to come all the third you gotta do the thing And that's the other thing is there wasn't a lot of variety in the workout There wasn't a lot of variation. So you kind of got to be okay with that too Yeah, well, I mean he knew what he could do and he couldn't go and do other two number races or do things He he prioritize his weekends with his family. So what we had to do we had to do we did it three days during the week Congrats big big hats off got some other people down there running got it done again It was it was a tough one. It was a tough one and I don't I think about this uh You know I think about it a lot Uh, I think about a lot of things a lot. That's an aside. But I think about Georgia dual Georgia Be a much bigger Race for the hundred than it is
um But then you look at the DNF rate that they had this year Like 70 first across the board like the 50-mileers had a giant DNF rate. Yep And that is just crazy sauce and you gotta go well It's cuz it's hot and maybe it's not being advertised and build As as hard as it is and I think if you Kind of shifted this direction. This is one of those paradoxes where if you tell people how hard the race is I think your finisher rate goes up. Yeah. I think people know what to expect But again people go out looking for things that are harder Yes, and Georgia dual has many reasons that it is hard And it is because of the heat the start time and listen they have jinnie and The fantastic job. Yeah, like it's a wonderful wonderful race. The makers have done An incredible job. The volunteers are amazing. Is it truly and They've extended it to 35 hours. They want more people to finish but unfortunately a noon start
In Georgia in September. I don't even know if that's it really Well, it would get you into that section You were going through the hardest Section on the front half during the hottest part of the day and it just it Where's people out? I think we just have to go back and look at the the pre noon start numbers And see if the DNF rate but even then they only have like a 32 and 33 out of Yeah, yeah, most of their finishers are anywhere from 29 to 33 like that's I think kind of the the meeting of what you're coming into And you know, it is what like 16,000 beta elevation gain or something like It's decent numbers It's just the timing the time of year and people underestimate that course all the time. Yeah It doesn't run like a no business because of the temperature if it was if it was the same
Tempts is no business. It would it would I think it would be easy. Yeah, because you get all those loops in the middle. It would be easy with no business And so that's It's kind of docs. It doesn't have a qualifier. We've kind of you know Doesn't have this like hey, this is a really hot really tough race labeled to it. Well, they don't have a high enough finisher Exactly, so it's it's yeah, it's got this this paradox of like okay How do we get more people to finish this race so that we can get more people to finish this race? So that I know you know, and I've got my own opinions on On how you get there But you know my opinion is a lot like come here. Let's but hold nobody wants it Let's pay a subscription I don't know You hate to I just hate the public say hey, this is this is what should or shouldn't do yeah um While say if you take cruel jewel and Georgia jewel Hand in hand the hardest parts of cruel jewel, which is the tougher race
It is longer and it's more of a elevation about twice as much. So we're gonna go ahead and just call it tougher um And the hardest parts of that course the eight stations get closer together. Yeah Yeah, and and kind of what we see at Georgia jewel Is where the hardest parts of that course the a stations get farther apart. Yeah I yeah, and I think that's probably one of the things that contributes along with because if you if it was hot And you could pull those a mile mile and a half closer together Maybe even two That that finish your race gonna go up exponentially and I know there's reasons that you can or can't do it I haven't looked at the course map and road access and do all those things so don't Like I don't have all the information. I'm just talking about logistics of Of laying out eight stations to and fro Yeah, they think that's it. They don't have a lot of area to be able to shift it And at one point they did have a water drop in between power lines and
Stover Uh, that which was much needed but it's still a ton of work to get that in and oh Is nowhere yeah, and that's that's the tough part right there. That is one of the hard things about those mountain Hunter you don't have access. Well, and a lot of runners. They don't want to carry more than they have to Like well, yes, you get I feel like you run into people who carry way too much shit and have 10 extra pounds on them And they're burning up because they have a jacket and gloves other bullshit on them that they don't need Buck knife prepare the socks When talking about you When you really just need an extra bottle or this is this was like you know, we were kind of going to progress is like I don't know if I'm gonna carry my bladder should you carry your bladder? Yep, I said Even if you if you don't need your bladder Passnate creek you don't need your bladder until you get back to snake creek. That's fine But you load that bladder up with ice water When you leave the starting line and if you don't drink it pour it on your head And that is exact that is exactly what I would do I would forgo ice bin danes and I would hold a nozzle from my ice bladder above my head the entire time
Yeah, to cool down because you have to cool down and you don't think about having to cool down in your right You don't want to carry an extra water. You worry about you an extra leader or whatever But I told him I said man you are you are not gonna notice The first 20 miles of that race you're not going to notice Having an extra leader of water on you what you will notice is not having it. Yes Like the weight difference isn't gonna be the factor no at all But when you run out you're out fucking factor or even when you're Even you know when you're not out because I think we have this tendency to to conserve Yeah, which I think conserving it is almost worse than not having it at all Oh, yeah when you It like if you're if your options are I can either run out an hour or half an hour before I get to the aid station Or drink sips until I get to the aid station run out Like drink or all of your water a couple miles out Yeah
Because you can run it's way you'll be fine or even 40 You can run that far without water and you're gonna get water when you get there you can drink as much as you want yeah like Drink it drink it and that's taking me along A bit To have that rationale. I think it's counterintuitive because we always want to have water on us But you're gonna be okay for 30 45 minutes without water. Yeah, you'll you'll live yeah You know another unpopular friends. I'm not a fan of ice bandanas. I am a fan of staying wet Yeah, staying wet because I personally don't like ice bandanas because Unless it's actively Melting full of ice and it has it on your neck. It's blocking the air You want the airflow on your neck. You want as much airflow as possible Because that's one of the things it's gonna cool you when it is very humid outside you need the wind So if you're blocking the wind like I just don't like something else hide on my neck I would rest you like you like to be free and unencumbered yes as much as you came when you run Yes, I
You can wet me down put or I can put on a wet shirt or do something like that That's gonna keep me cool. It just sounds like you just draw a lot of inspiration from Camille's page Anyways, that that's it. Yeah, some people cling to it I find that I am hotter with an ice bandana because I Yeah, I don't I don't like ice Bandanas around my neck. I want ice water on my head. I want ice On my head. Yep, and I want that cold water. I you know run run in the heat. I'll take Uh ice handheld knowledge. I don't need to drink it for a couple miles like I said like I'll be all right But I'm gonna pour this on my head All I'll just that's what it's there for like when you drink it out of the handle No, I'm just I'm dribbling it on my head to stay cool. Yeah, okay. I understand the use of ice bandanas Yeah, yeah, yeah, some people's jam I speak in personally for me. I don't want anything that blocks us Access to my skin so that I can cool better, but I also run very hot
I run very very hot and I don't mind being hot, but I am particular about Feeling things on me very particularly. I am like so it I mean you've got to figure out what's working for you Is the point like don't Freakin look at the weather people Like look at the weather and see what it is And even if you're at the beginning of your training block Now you you can farmers all enact the average high temperature Or the record high of temperature and that's probably the better way to go Is you should be planning your race day gear strategy whatever With the record higher low in mind If if it's a fall of the summer thing like You know if it's kind of warm out you should be planning to have record temperatures that day If you're if you're looking at a colder shoulder season race you should be right be planning to have Record low temperatures that day because if that's what you hit aim for
You can always dial it all the way back. Yeah, like you don't need the extra sweater You don't need the ice pack if it's cooler moderate that day But if you don't plan forward at all you're going to be screwed when you get to the start line and so if they are Planning and strategizing with that mindset How easy is it To you got to work through some of this stuff you got to prep your gear and say hey, do I want the bandana? Do I want into my hat? Do I want you know How do I want to try to cool myself down? I remember the the we ran rock and chuck of my socket And I rolled up to that eight station and I was dying on the way back in I was five miles out And this dude started shoving ice down my shirt I have one of those compression shirts on and he just like started hand-filling ice down my shirt And I was You know how do I been cognizant it had been intimate and then he like filled up my hat like ripped the hat off my head Full of full ice and slammed it back down He's like, buddy you were gonna cool down. You're gonna cool down right now see that's another thing that I can't I find myself hotter. I was powerless
In the moment I was powerless. I find myself getting hotter in a hat. I can't yeah I can't do I can't do a hat I don't like to run in a hat with it if it's hot because it does trap heat and I don't like it It traps heat it looks much cooler. It's not cooler. It's but it's not in like I am envious of people who can wear a hat during hot races and I try Yeah, I think some of these bros is trying out here like trying to look cool With a hat on which I respect. Yeah, yeah, no the vibe in the looks part of it like listen I understand that I like I am not knocking that at all I like the way my hair looks a lot better with a hat on but I can't wait the hat on Yeah, like when I'm running and so no I like it when you ran when you ran a Tall hill last year your hair was flowing. That was the that was the look. Yeah Then which I didn't mind that because it was cold outside. I didn't kind of kept my neck warm I didn't have to like wear a buffer. I mean I had one on but I like out my hair's enough like it's fine And it was flowing and yeah, but I have very thick ass hair Thick fucking hair. So throwing a hat on top of that. I mean
Oh god, I like I like it to be just I like to be cool enough where I can wear hat. Yeah Because I want to wear hat all the time when it comes to me thinking of like a future career I want to be able to wear a hat. Yeah, that's where I mean I don't essentially want to wear a corporate branded hat. I want to be able to just kind of wear my own hat But I can make compromises as long as I have school Yeah, you know, like I'll find a hat to wear like it'll be all right So if you're worried like I'm not gonna like your company hat like I'll work with you on it Maybe we got to wear some new ones. I can I can develop something for you. That's cool. I can wear it either way I'm here to help you. I'm not I'm pretty pretty amenable But I want to wear a hat. So I like to wear a hat But if it's warm out at all like no man I'm not trying to I'm not trying to trap more heat on my head And I've worn some of the like the the running hats The ones that are really cool. I've got the everyday grit when I love um I can get it done in there, but if it was hot I'm probably not wearing a hat. I'll have to go to one of those meal bucket hats They got and I the one I've got I'm about to vent it up real good
Because we're putting holes in everything again, you know, I mean we're going back to the 80s We're putting holes in things. So it's probably gonna get ventilated a little bit more And then I can put the ice in there and then I got ice Yeah, yeah, see even if I put ice in that I just know you're not doing you're not doing what hair You're not doing ice like that now and I don't even mind the wet hair But it still doesn't like I gotta have I gotta have wet. I gotta have air flow like I'm an air flow person That I I admire people that can just look so cute and their little hats throughout their whole race And it just looks adorable. I I can't do it. No, I ain't about that life I you know, I admire people that can wear like above the entire time and it looks so cute and so cool I don't like stuff on my neck I it drives me insane. I I am I'm just not meant to be stylish when I run I think I think a lot of times look pretty good. Thanks I'm just forget pull my hair back and let's try my You look amazing all the time. Thanks, baby. I know what you do
Well like speaking of covering stuff up why you are I'm like, you know, to me She stayed wet and had all her skin like covered at mid-state and I was very curious I mean you are coming in like every 15-16 minutes So you can stay wet like it doesn't have time to to dry And I would be curious on something like that and if it really does if the humidity's up You're not gonna get there see and that's but that's what I I wonder I would think more like a dry heat like And death Valley is obviously a very extreme um Example, but as long as I was wet, you know Fine, I didn't mind the sun almost again and actually The wind was not terrible even though it was still a hundred degrees It felt all right, but yeah, I've got a wet shirt on you get a little bit of breeze. It's gonna cool you down Yeah, that's the whole point of a sweat really yeah, so your body makes wetness And then the breeze comes along touches the wetness and it cools you down so
If you put on a like a suture in the suture, it's wet It's gonna like the breeze is gonna supercharge that system Yeah, thermodynamics. Yeah So uh, yeah, I was just thinking I was like what I like something like that When it's hot or would I just be more annoyed than I get a practice gonna test your gear train like you fight I just there are certain things that yes work in science or in things at work in there's and certain just personal preferences Yeah, that's a lot of it all day and they can go I don't fucking like that Yeah, you've got to figure out what's working for you 100% like what you're willing to yeah, to give on But I think a lot of people focus when they're training They're focusing about the miles and they're trying to mile chase blocks instead of Putting as much time and effort into like the gear and the the execution idea of it We we run through a long block and then we try to figure out how to execute a race whereas the the block is is
In its entirety You know kind of designed for you so you can figure out how to execute this race And sometimes you just need more reps, you know, if you don't have a lot of reps You got to put a lot more work in to figure out what works and and doesn't work for you come race day um, and then you know you you rack up 70 or 100 altars or whatever it takes to qualify you as an ultra runner And then you know, it's probably less headwork but Also, it's good to do some races, you know like April did the Georgia Jule 35 biolars training run and you know she had to problem solve a lot of shit that she did not see coming and stuck like somewhere Her salt tabs fell out Well, you need fucking salt tabs when it's 100 and something degrees outside I mean, so you know she Had to think outside of that and Getting out and doing different races and finding yourself in different positions Flask and papal juice that'd be You know, you learn what you can do or where you need to adjust if you get out there and get some of those reps and that experience and and not everyone can do that
Nope Not everybody's interested in doing that not everybody that runs an ultra is interested in being like an ultra runner There's a part of a lifestyle for them. They're just like hey, this is a cool thing I want to go out and do it and so that's what they set their mind to and I think it's great Yeah, it genuinely is like you don't have to like go full send into into this world Like you can you can tack on And speaking of tacking on I'm gonna go ahead and make the announcement. It's already been made. Okay Last soul altars I know coming out series of last souls very excited. Yeah pretty pretty excited. I do think That is a very very interesting Ideally and concept of of having this Um under one umbrella series of of last man's Kind of kind of go going towards like that that championship Round um and qualifiers and at large entrance and and a lot of different things. I think Obviously the last man is the most compelling form of ultra running to watch
Hands down. It's not even a debate at this point um the backyard is the most prominent last man universe although We're not alone here in this last man standing uh world. I saw over the weekend There is a triathlon last man standing now. I try. I don't know if they called it a backyard or not But if they did then that's a stupid name for it. So they should not Um, they can call it a last standing triathlon all they want and and and where they did a A bike swim run And they gave him two hours to get all that done. They did the swimming in a pool just you know for drownsies We'll safer. Okay, but that's interesting to see the uh The sport I think every ultra-runner's trying to get away from yeah Start copying what we got going down, you know Yeah, and as the Europeans I think it was over there in Europe and those those crazy cats Who knows what's going on in Europe? Yeah, I mean I do it all sorts of things but uh This is interesting for the game
It is I'm excited to see How all that develops and you know I think the guys that are behind it are really genuine and really care about the sport I hope so and I'm I'm excited to see What they do with it and you know We are of the opinion that the backyard is a particular format 4.1 trail then you go to road That's we're of that opinion. It's a thing to me. Yeah, it very is But I'm also not so like grumpy old man standing on my part porch shouting get off my lawn To not recognize That backyards that are flatter and wider And don't have like a trail road variation aren't backyards. I'm not saying that Yeah, yeah, yeah, well, I was gonna lead into that you know We kind of feel like the wording is a little bit more like last-runderstanding last-man standing whatever you want to say Uh Once you start deviating yeah, that particular format and how it was designed and you know a lot of that has to do with the courses that are available or
Or whatever but when you say backyard you think 4.1 Yeah, it's a 4.16 mile loop is what you think of when you think about yard and I guess The problem that that I think we find ourselves in is that we've we know more of the history we've been around the game Then what is probably the majority of people experiencing it now? Yeah, because it it became because the the races and the platforms that publicized it over the past year year to have It became it got thrown out to an out large audience. Yeah, so they're not aware of that and I again I don't want to sound like well televisions and black and white in this color down this this this this the atoms family with color is a different thing Yeah, like I don't We're probably closer to splitting hairs between DVD and blu-ray like Yeah, but there's a difference to me and I think it's it's an important difference But I'm not gonna stand on my porch and say that's not a backyard ultra it is it's just Maybe it's a little different than it's a different variation than what I
Think it was intended to be that's all that's that's that's it. That's as far as I want to is say this is I'm not gonna gatekeep it. There's enough There's enough gatekeep it out there and genuinely the only reason I say it is because I because of the wider audiences and because of the acclaim That it's it's being broadcast to which I think is great. We're we're showcasing human potential in some very special individuals And what's our capable of? I love that. We're trying to do the same thing. So um, I don't want to forget where we started That's all that's it I am more of a nostalgic nostalgic person in a lot of ways and so I want to just recognize and understand like hey why we're doing this and why this matters um, and that's it. I don't think we're replacing Distance races at all. I think the hundreds the the the big three one hundreds are still gonna be the big three Especially when it comes to the money in the sport the genuine sponsorships and the high level athletes. There's not a lot of crossover
um No, either you're kind of in one arena or you're in the other harby Lewis kind of bounces uh, he does but he's been around a really long time Yeah, this is you know, he's been he'd been running for a long time before the backyard was invented. Yeah, so you know, so there's just a lot out there Mm-hmm I'm excited to see where it goes. Uh, I'm excited to see how they grow it and what they do and the energy behind it It I think it's a really cool thing Yeah, it's a win that the community is open to it and we don't get people all crafty and shitty about it Oh, and there will be some because there's always some a a rising tide raises all ships raises all ships uh, but the wake from a larger vessel will Just think a small boat There you go so We just have to see what this is. Is this the tide or is this a ship and I think it's a tide. I genuinely do Um, and I hope it is so Um, there's enough and I think you know
Somebody's gonna do it so Yeah, and I'd I'd love But yeah, the last thing we need is there's an eccentric billionaire genuinely Taking the name to heart and and everybody has to run to their death. That's Yeah, you know, I mean we don't need a we don't need a billionaire chasing people around his island Until there's only one of them left I mean, that'd be an interesting concept No, well, hey listen, I think that's about all we have this week on the ultra group broadcast Not for nothing. Do you got anything else for him, Miss Jones? No, no, just you know I That's all I got all right. Hey listen. Thanks for tuning into this week's episode We will catch you right back here next week in the infamous murder mile studio
