Hey kids, welcome to Junior's for Jesus. Go grab your Bibles. We're gonna be digging in and learning some really exciting stories. Let's get started. And one of the reasons that Jesus was so hated by the religious leaders is that he refused to abide by their petty man-made rules about healing on the Sabbath day. Jesus did this on numerous occasions and he healed this woman regardless of what these religious leaders said. It wasn't the only time that he did this either. In fact, he did it on several different occasions. It was so common that the Pharisees even planted a poor man in a crowded dinner party on the Sabbath so that Jesus would walk into their trap again. But Jesus took full advantage of the opportunity to not only heal the individual, but to expose their hypocrisy in the process. We'll examine Jesus Marvel's wisdom in doing this in just a few moments. But first, let's consider Jesus' words given to his disciples

for Matthew 10, 38, and 39. This is our memory verse for this week and it underscores the cost of following Jesus. Jesus said to them, he who does not take up his cross and follow me, he's not worthy of me. He who finds his life will lose it. And he who loses his life for my sake will find it. Tuesday, doing good on the Sabbath, Luke 14, 1 through 6. Jesus showed in a beautiful way what the love of God is like by healing that bent over woman that we read about in yesterday's lesson. He healed her when he saw her. He didn't wait until the day after the Sabbath. The gospel actually tells us of at least seven different times that Jesus purposely chose to do healing miracles on the Sabbath.

And in today's lesson, we'll read about the seventh of those healings. It happened once Sabbath when Jesus was invited to dinner in the home of one of the rulers in the Pharisees. As usual, he was being watched closely by spies who were always trying to catch any word or action that they could use against him. And yet in spite of how tiring that must have been, Jesus was always incredibly patient with them. Perhaps the person who invited Jesus to dinner that night also purposely invited a man with a disease who made his body swell painfully. The Bible calls it dropsy. Jesus noticed a man and of course, he knew everyone was waiting to see what he would do. Looking at the lawyers and the Pharisees, there that night, he asked them, is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? What a question. They didn't want to answer his question because they couldn't answer his question.

Healing was not a very normal occurrence and to be sure the one who was healing in their midst clearly had supernatural ability and ability that they could not ignore. So the question that Jesus was really asking here was, is the one who has the supernatural ability to be healed, supposed to be governed by man-made rules of individuals who clearly have not been given these powers? Is God to be held by man-made rules? If they said yes, then they clearly have undermined the power of God while subconsciously acknowledging it. But to say no is to deny that power altogether. So they didn't say anything. Jesus didn't say anything either. He just healed the man and everyone watched him go on his way rejoicing. So then what did Jesus ask them? Find out in Luke 14 verses 5 and 6.

Then he answered and said to them, which of you having a dog here in ox that has fallen into a pit will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day? And they could not answer him regarding these things. Just like before, no one answered his question. No one could. Now let's apply this. If you have a dog or some other pet and it fell into a deep hole on the Sabbath, wouldn't you pull it out? Well, of course you would. Volunteerly saving lives and relieving suffering on the Sabbath of either people or animals are very important acts of mercy. Sure to be done on the Sabbath. And we can be sure we're keeping the Sabbath the right way when we follow the example and the teaching of Jesus. Outlined here for us in Luke chapter 14.
