The Portal host Brian Smith is joined by Locked On Irish host Tyler Wojciak to break down the biggest questions surrounding Notre Dame football after Week 1. First, they discuss the season-ending injury to 2027 quarterback commit Champ Monds and what it could mean for the future of the Notre Dame quarterback room, including whether the Irish could pursue a transfer quarterback if CJ Carr enters the NFL Draft after the season. Then, Brian and Tyler examine Notre Dame’s offensive performance against Wisconsin, how improved offensive line play allowed the Irish to become more aggressive in the second half, and whether concerns about Notre Dame’s playmakers could matter in the College Football Playoff. Finally, they look ahead to the coming weeks and identify what Notre Dame needs to accomplish before its matchup with BYU, including getting the wide receivers more involved and creating meaningful opportunities for defensive reserves.

Champ Mons is shutting down his junior-slaught senior season and there have been questions about what that means for Notre Dame's quarterback recruiting. We're going to talk about it right here on this crossover.
You are Lockdown College Crossover, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome into this crossover of Lockdown Irish and Locked on the portal I'm your host Brian Smith along with Tyler Wojczyk of Lockdown Irish. I'm going to talk a lot of different things about Notre Dame, mostly the passing game in one way, shape or form, but a very big key before they get to the end of the season. They've got to improve in a lot of areas. Really, first challenge is probably BYU. What do they got to do between now and then? We're also going to talk about the offensive line and how it changes play-calling and how you can just run over teams. Don't always need the most explosive guys when you're getting five yards scary. We're also going to talk about CJ Carr spreading the ball around. How much value is there with any weak quarterback just picking teams apart? And again, to start, champ Mons, the big time quarterback out of Deerabeech for who's committed to defying Irish. Tyler, you and I were discussing how he was not a guy that, to our calculation, has started
more than about 20 games or something like that in high school. He's a reclass. Is it enough? Well, he shut it down. He's not going to play anymore this year. He's going to enroll at Notre Dame next summer. Do you think that's enough or do you think this is asserting? What do you have for a take on this? I think it's a major concern. And we are not here to speculate about the injury itself. I've heard conflicting reports about whether this was the Mons family decision to shut it down or maybe the injury was truly that severe. But no matter which way you slice it, he is barely played football at the high school level. And he is going to go to college having played less than 20 games of high school football. And there is simply no replacement for live in game reps. I don't care how many drills you do on the field in practice. I don't care how many camps you go to. I don't even care how many different ways you try to replicate the experience of being out there live. There is something different about being a quarterback, facing a defense with 11 guys
who are prepared to take your head off and then try to figure out what the right thing to do there is because if you're a quarterback and you're doing drills in a controlled environment, it's just not the same no matter how hard you tried to make it similar. So from that standpoint, I am very concerned because champ Mons does not strike me as a player who is going to be willing to wait around several years at Notre Dame. If he said, hey, I'm going to wait my turn, say he doesn't start at Notre Dame until his third year with the program that it's okay. You know, he's going to have some time to develop in Notre Dame system. But considering he classified, considering some of the other decisions that he has made, I think in his mind, he fully anticipates playing and starting by his sophomore year at the latest. And let's say that happens at Notre Dame 2028 would be the year. He would have gone, what, five straight years of not playing a full season of college football or a football really at any level. So yeah, that concerns me a big time. I've seen champ play a number of times. I used to live in Florida and I've seen him at different events, arm strength, talent,
all that or great. And I also know that he's very good on the chalkboard, which honestly is the most important thing. CJ Carr is a great example of that. And we'll talk about that in the next segment here. But I agree that it's concerning that he doesn't have a ton of reps. What I will say on the other side is for a guy that was super inexperienced, he plays at Viral Beach, that program doesn't play a lot of freshmen. It's one of those programs that's expected to win and he walked in with the guy. He's very, I mean, he's a great player. There's no doubt about that. Maybe one of the most unfortunate things about this is he probably could have played his way into being a top five quarterback in this class despite the fact he reclassified because that is just how well he was playing to start off this season. Dude, his, his first couple games, I know he might have been the best quarterback for the first couple games in the country as a reclass. That is very unusual. But to that end, I agree that there is a concern with it. Now I want to combine that. Right now, obviously CJ is the quarterback and I'm sure there are some Notre Dame fans out there like, well, CJ's got another year left.
Let me throw a little something at you. He has negative five million years left. This is it. 0.0% chance he's not in the draft next year barring entry. It's going to be a first run pick. That's how that works. I know fans always look for, oh, if he can't, no, no, no, no, no, no. You take the money, you go to the draft, you ensure it, that's it. So they're going to have a dilemma after this season in Mons, obviously, the reclass are all that before anybody else. No, you will not be Notre Dame's quarterback next year. I have had that somebody like bring that up. He's going to play right away. No, he's not. It won't be not now. No, no, that's not going to happen. But second year, I wouldn't be surprised if he stays healthy as first season. He could have beat somebody out. Yeah, because it'll be the most physically gifted guy just about ever for Notre Dame. They've not the most physically gifted because he can run too. With that being stated, do you think Notre Dame will go portal or they'll stay in house for the 2027 season? I've had this conversation with fans that are and aren't Notre Dame affiliated and
gotten different answers both ways. I can see an argument for either side of the equation. You could ask me this question every single week for the next two months. And there's a possibility that I have a different answer week to week because there is so much that is going to change between now and the time that Notre Dame actually has to make that decision. I was talking before the season started because the backup quarterback battle and Notre Dame has been a big talking point during training camp. That probably just tells you how good of a position this Notre Dame team is when people are spending that much time talking about well, who is going to be the backup. But it's interesting because you've got two guys in Teddy Girard and Noah Grubs who are now in the same class after Teddy Girard reclassified. One of those guys is going to be gone after this season. Most certainly, right? Whoever comes in second in that battle is probably going to leave because you don't normally lose the starting spot or lose the spot in the depth chart to a guy in the same class and then stick around especially if you're a quarterback. Unless Notre Dame makes it clear that next spring they are truly starting from scratch with
that competition. If they go out and get a transfer quarterback though, they might both leave, which is then even more concerning. So it's a really delicate balance for this Notre Dame coaching staff. I feel like the coaching staff would prefer to not have to go in the portal. They'd prefer to play Girard or Grubs and have one of their guys who they trained in house end up being the guy long term. But the fact of the matter is Notre Dame is a program who's going to spend a ton of money every single year and they are not in it for rebuild years. They're not going to put out a quarterback who they don't think can get them back to the college football play. So if Girard nor Grubs can't do that in their second year in the program, then yeah, they're going to go out and they're going to get a transfer portal quarterback and they're going to have to make that decision in my opinion by October at the latest because you know as well as anyone scouting. Let's call it for portal prospects starts during the season, especially at quarterback and moves are going to need to be made. So I feel like Notre Dame is in the process of making that decision as we sit here today and they're going to think about it over the next couple of months.
So today I'm going to say no, but that could definitely change. I think you're on to something there in two regards. Number one, it depends on how close it is between Noah and Teddy before we really know anything. If it's definitive separation, well, the one that's behind will be in the portal in January. However, if it's super close, I know they both, I know both of them. They really like Notre Dame. They don't want to leave. They'll at least go through spring. It is what it is. That's how that goes. But it really depends on this season. We don't have any data for that. As for the portal, here's the other part of it. They don't want to bring it to portal quarterback. I agree. Here's another reason. That money you spend on that. Well, it could be used on a defensive tackle or a wide receiver. So they're really rooting for Teddy. Exactly. And they don't want to do it. Especially with the quarterback market being what it is and being what it was last off season.
And I can't even imagine what it's going to be in 2027. So Notre Dame is not going to want to do it. But if they feel like they have to, they will. Yeah, I think for the top two or three guys, it'll be five million in a, for one year. I know. Remember when one million for Sam Hartman felt like a lot? Yeah, that was 2020. That was not that long ago. Yeah, next year you're right. It's going to be five, six. Who even knows, man? When we come back, we're going to talk about CJ Carr. We're going to talk about the offense line. Does Notre Dame have enough playmakers at receiver with this style of offense? There's been a lot of discussion about that on social media over the last 48 hours. Let's talk about that next right here on this crossover. Today's episode is brought to you by CalShi NFL season is here and everyone is already making predictions. Who's winning the division? Who's making the playoffs? They are trading at 17%, meaning a hundred dollar trade would pay out $555 if they win another Super Bowl. That's the great thing about CalShi. Let's talk about CJ Carr and what he did against Wisconsin as a backdrop. This is a traditional Notre Dame start. By the way, I'm not a fan of the style, but this is what they do a lot. They don't show anything. Run very generic inside plays. It's not like they're trying to hide anything from rice, no offense, but the owls are not beating anybody that is of consequence, but very basic and they just out execute you. At least that's their idea. And they will, like every team does, although they'll lie about it. They say plays for bigger games. Every coach will stand on their mothers for even lie about that, but it's true. Did you like the play calling A and B? Do you think they have the playmakers at tight end wide receiver and running back to create problems, especially? I'm going to send the OI gets better, but take this any way you want to go.
The play calling of the first half to me showed a lack of trust from Denbrock in his offensive line. They weren't running a lot of plays that took time to develop. Now obviously part of that had to do with the Wisconsin defense, watching that back, like in the moment, I was like, wow, it seems like they're really playing guys deep. They're playing too high safety is all game. And then you rewatch it and it's almost even more alarming. They were not going to give up deep shots. They barely ran man. And then when they did run man coverage, no rooms wide receivers actually beat them every single time. So I'm not actually concerned about the wide receivers just yet. We'll talk more about that. But in terms of the overall plan, I felt like they'd come out conservative. I didn't like some of the play calling early on when they ran three consecutive screens. They ran like inside zone to Nolan James on second and 17 like that stuff. I understand trying to play close to the vest there a little bit at the beginning, but then the second half, they started to open things up. But the main thing is because the offensive line started to win the battle in the trenches. I think bringing self an absur back into the game is a big reason why not the entire
reason. I feel like the offensive line is a whole big set for the second half. But then they just started wearing Wisconsin down. And then when you start to do that, all of a sudden the passing game opens up and I feel like everything started finally click and for CJ car, especially he's a guy who is a bit emotionally and he looked like a guy who came out, amped up ready to go make a statement in the first game. He missed a couple throws that he normally wouldn't second half settles settles now gets in a groove goes 10 of 13 passing for 133 yards. Two of those in completions are throw away. So we really only missed one pass to Jordan phase on on the sidelines. But yeah, it was a tale of two halves for this team. And I feel like that offense you saw in the second half is going to look a lot more like what you're going to see from Notre Dame the rest of the way. I want to bring up something that you just touched on. I know it's boring and fans hate it, especially newbies to this sport. Sometimes the most important play in a football game is the one where the guy in the third row catches the pass. CJ is worrying that he's he had a few plays last year, especially Miami, Texas saying
in the US, he better teams great that USC and interceptions, one of the worst I've ever seen in Notre Dame state. I've watched Notre Dame for 40 years. I don't know what the hell he was looking at. I'm not even just Notre Dame stadium. It's all stadiums. That was bad. He gets frustrated when something's not there that he thinks pre snap. That has changed. And you can watch him. Today's media is different. These fields, these NFL fields, they're practically standing next to him with the cameras. It seems like you can read his he had no fear at any point on any down in distance. The calmness. That's the guy you want to play with. And I've been around him a little bit and he's a pretty excitable guy. But in the moment, he's not. I'm surprised that he's really toned it down. And I think it's one of the reasons that he ended up being 10 to 13. Like he was very, very consistent. And he could have taken a few more chances. But this is the part I know I'm going to tick off some badger fans here. There was no reason to risk it. They're terrible on offense. If you don't turn it over like Notre Dame, I told my buddy minimum, minimum, they needed
to be plus two in turnovers to have any chance. In my head, not trying to be a jerk. Oh, they can't score. They just can't score. So Notre Dame and Din Brock knew that, CJ knew that. So I'm not sure how to grade the receiver room yet. I know FaZe on is going to play in the NFL. Great house. They didn't get the ball to that was a little weird. At one point, by the way, that's the worst holding call so far this year. The one. That was so. And think about what that did to not just taking away that one catch by my Lynn Graham. Notre Dame has the ball at the end of the first half. They are trying to score. Right. You get a nice chunk play on the first play of the drive. My Lynn Graham gets a catch. He starts to feel that the offense could get into a groove. They could go into the second half up by 10 points instead of three. Land the ball. Yeah. That one play changes the entire dynamic of the first half. It's something that I started to notice and just seeing some of the discourse online. It's like, oh, you didn't watch the second half.
You saw the first half. You saw that Notre Dame was struggling. They were only up by three entering half time and you are making these grand takeaways about one half football, but had you had watched the second half and not put all your focus on Ole Miss Louisville. You would have seen that, hey, that was a different offense out there. They moved the ball at will. They won on the line of scrimmage. But really, one play kind of impacted so much beyond just the fact that Notre Dame lost what would have been like a 25 yard game. That's a huge momentum shift. Anthony Napp destroyed me. He might be the best guard in college football. I knew he'd be good, but he hadn't played it. So I didn't have any opinion. No problems. I don't know if you watched Land and Tingle Wells film review. I did. Holy moly. They're in a pretty good spot. Sinner and left guard Notre Dame has two NFL players. Will Black, I think, will develop into that, but it's early to say. But left guard and Sinner, it's the best combo in college football. Good luck. So it's only going to get better as he gets healthier. Black's going to get better. I thought Kirby Lambert looked good too.
That's a good offensive line. Once they figure out right guard, whether it be Sullivan Absher or if they go with Maddie obviously, when he comes back. Yeah, it should be Sullivan Absher until I think October is when Augustine gets back and then maybe they try to restart that competition because I know the staff is really high on Augustine. But either way, despite the slow start there, I actually feel a lot better about the offensive line moving forward. So that's the point I want to make here before we go into the third segment before talking about the BYU situation, because the schedule is so mild. You can destroy teams if you have a veteran quarterback. And CJ's got a big arm and all that and he's very smart. He puts them all where it needs to go, et cetera. But if you're second and five all day, well, you look like a genius as a play collar. You have a full bag to go to. Second and eight. It doesn't matter if it's Don Corrielle when he's creating the West Coast offense. It's not a good situation. Notre Dame and I'm doing a podcast about this. Literally nightbuck, we're recording this on a Wednesday.
They're one of the very few schools that could win a title with this set of school players. But they can tell you they're going to run over you. Didn't do it. And then afterwards tell you, well, we told you that was going to happen. There's just a handful that can do it. Your line is really, really good. They've got depth and they they set up second and four. Like people were complaining. And these Williams ran 20 times for 90 yards and two scores and people are complaining. That is the state like the standards ridiculous at Notre Dame for run game. That's game one. You don't have all your players and not everybody's healthy. Telling you like, I know they don't have a high state wide receiver group. But neither does anybody else. You know what I mean? Like Miami, maybe. They don't have a big receiver like Jeremiah, but you don't have to if you just run over people. Two years ago, Notre Dame made it to the national title game against the high state. That was not an elite wide receiver group and I'm being extra kind. So I'm not in this camp because there's been a lot of discourse.
And if you know, you know about Notre Dame, well, they get in the playoff. They don't have the receiver. There's a lot of haters in the media and certain people that are at least in the middle. They prefer Notre Dame not win. That is where this generates from. And a lot of fans too. So I think it's pretty comical. If you want to add to that far away, but George is another team that plays almost identical to Notre Dame, by the way. So it's the same kind of deal. Yeah, would you like to see Notre Dame have more guys step up at wide receiver in the first game? Sure. And I think it's fair to question just how good this group of wide receivers could be against some of the better defenses in college football. But here's the thing. They're not going to play one of the better defenses in college football until they face. The BYU in mid-October, Miami in early November, and then assuming they make the college football playoff, they'll have things to figure out then. But it is just so early on in the season. And when you look at the game plan and the way that Wisconsin's defense sort of dictated terms and, you know, I think people just have to understand if the defense on Wisconsin,
for as bad as the team is overall, there are good players on that defense. Like Mason's post is good. They have a few guys in the defensive line. I'm not saying they're going to get drafted in the first and second round. I'm just like, OK, these guys are good enough to play for a big 10 team. And I think, you know, the two strengths of this defense sitting back for the past few years, stop the run, limiting explosives. Noterame didn't get a bunch of explosive plays through the air, but they're like, fine. We'll just dink and dunk our way all the way down the field. And that's exactly what they did. I feel like Milen Graham showed some things, like, all right, I see it. That one route that he had on the play that got called back, beautiful route, man coverage, cooks the defender. That was a nice game. But Jane great house. I don't know if he said something to the car. They just have never really had any chemistry. But if you think back to great house in 2024, we always talk about the way that season finished. Riley Leonard wasn't throwing on the ball that much either. And then against Penn State, when he was forced to, he threw up a couple plays on third and long where he went up and made a contest to catch. And he came down with it and then Riley Leonard was like, all right, I'm just only throwing
it to that guy. Then he had all kinds of success. When they were down three touchdowns against Ohio State, Riley Leonard had no other option to throw it to Jane great house. And when he did, it worked. So I feel like Denver Act just has to force the issue a little bit with Jane great house because I just don't get it, man. One catch for six yards on a screen. I expected more from him. But I do think that that is going to improve as the season goes along. I agree with you. That's a really big factor. Anytime you have a player that can step up just a little bit, it helps your offense. But great house proven. He's got to figure that out because eventually they're just going to roll coverage. Really hard towards phase on. He's the one guy he completely has a connection with. That's obvious. And even when teams know he's going to get four or five catches, you'll probably have 55, 66 catches this year or something like that in that range. But I think there's a good chance that the second guy may not have more than 40. It would still be nice if it's a receiver like great house who has proven it in the playoffs. Like that would be your ideal situation in Graham.
I think is their most explosive guy. That's just time. How long that will take? It's hard to say. But when he turns the corner, he's got some juice. So that's a pretty interesting player. When we come back, when we discuss, shall we say ramp between now and the BYU game? There's a handful of speed bumps, but I don't expect them to be too difficult for doom as you can stay rice. What does Notre Dame have to do to get ready before they play a team that can actually beat him? I'll see you next time. I'll see you next time. Bye. Today's episode is brought to you by ODO. From sales and accounting to inventory and marketing, everything works in one place, helping your team move faster, stay organized, and focus on growing the business instead of
managing software. The best organizations know that success isn't just about talent, it's about having everyone working toward the same goal. And that's true in sports, just like it is in business. One thing that's really stood out to me about Marcus Trunce's tenured Notre Dame is how aligned the entire program feels from the top down. Whether that be recruiting, player development, strength, conditioning, or the coaching staff, everyone seems to be working from the same vision of what they want the program to become. It's not just about landing talented players, it's about having every part of the organization pulling the same direction. That's usually what separates good programs from great ones. Great organizations win because operations matter and that's why you should get ODO. Try it free today at odu.com, such locked on. That's od.com, slash locked on. The schedule should have been much more difficult, but no offense, but Wisconsin and Michigan state have not held up there into the bargain. Those games are scheduled 10 plus years ago. It looks like they were going to be good games. Yeah, Wisconsin played them well for a half. I'll give them that. I don't expect Michigan state to be much. You're OK. No in four or five games, but it's year one. That's going to be tough. Rice, North Carolina score. What was it? Tyler 16 or 15 points. 16. Against the team that has no quarterback. That guy's terrible. I wouldn't be surprised if Notre Dame put Bill Bella check out of his misery.
And that's a 56 to 10 game. So like literally, do you think there's anything specific they can work on beyond this, like their own practices, to really get themselves set before they play at BYU? They're going to have to figure out a couple of options at Y receiver. We've already alluded to it. I think Miley Graham is going to get there. The fact that he has a low start to the year is not surprising. He also didn't play that much against Wisconsin because Notre Dame ran a lot of 12 personnel. And Graham is the backup field and slot receiver. And Faeson is not going to come off the field in a game like that. So we just didn't have that many opportunities. I fully expect Notre Dame to open up a bit more against Rice. He will have his opportunities. I believe great house is going to come into his own as well. Defensively, I think they just have to expand the rotations. I was a little bit surprised by the fact that Bubacar Trayorian Bryce Young played 44 out of a total 61 snaps in that game. And it's not a criticism. Both guys played extremely well. That was probably the best game we have seen from Bryce Young in a Notre Dame uniform.
But now that they have some lesser opponents to play, I expect to see a lot more Ronnie Dunham, Keon Keely. Maybe by early October, we start to see Ebenezer, Iwihtade. Logan Thomas is also going to get some reps as well. They only rotated three linebackers in that first game. Now Granite KVA was out with an injury, but I expect that to open up as well. So that's going to be the main thing. Getting more guys and reps and opportunities so that when you play a team like BYU, I fully expect that game to try to be there. They were going to be why he's going to try to make it like a defensive slug fest. You're going to want to be able to just throw bodies at them and just keep delivering body blows over and over again so that by the fourth quarter, you can pull away and win that game on the road. So defensively, it's not as much of a scheme thing. It's just getting some more guys, some reps, so that you can utilize them and trust them when you count on them on October 17th at Provo. Yeah, I kind of agree with that. The DN thing, I didn't realize they played that many snaps. I have not delved into Notre Dame snap counts that much against Wisconsin.
To be honest with you, they threw body blows and then once they put again, maybe the hero of the game, Sullivan, Appshire, he played really, really well when he came in to write guard in the second half. Those two and three yard runs, we became four and five yard runs and then the damn broke. What was the first drive that they scored in the second half? There was maybe it was a sack. I can't remember which. But Ania's had multiple plays in that drive that were basic, but the whole was so big. I got five yards. I'm a little out of shape. Okay. We just put it like that. And he's very talented. Like Alabama wanted that kid and a lot of teams did. So I'm not surprised that they eventually pulled away, but I think they need to figure out receiver. My bigger question is, and this is something, again, they're never going to admit this. We'll probably see some of it against Rice just to start. There's no way in hell. Winnered Moore is playing many reps in the second half of the rice game. No, if you said the whole game, I wouldn't mind. I'm serious.
Like, he's just going to have to tackle. Yeah, by the way, I didn't realize he was that physical when he threw down the running back or whatever it was with what I was like, oh, yeah, I was like, okay, well, good for you. You've been in the way room, but I did not see that coming. Yeah, I mentioned being car atoms or Mark Zachary and Talos Gold in your young player. Highly recruited out of high school, you're waiting your turn. And you see a guy like Leonard Moore, who is obviously the best quarter or cover corner in the country. You see him making those plays. It's sort of sets the tone like, hey, if you want to play and you want to be great at Notre Dame, this is what you have to do. You can't just clamp up dudes and coverage. You have to be physical. And even if a big running back like Abu Sama tries to step on you, you've got to win that battle because that's what Leonard Moore is doing. He's the best defensive player in college football. I think Moore could play strong safety. I really do. He's big enough, too. He's 6.1.5, 6.2, 190 plus pounds. But I did not know he was that physical. The other thing I wanted to see, and I'm, you know, maybe it's just because he's my favorite
player to watch for Notre Dame. Kingston, Viliamo, Asa. If there was ever a team that it was meant for him to play against, it's any form of option team. Yeah. Because in high school, I mean, for those that don't know, he played at St. John Bosco out in the Trinity League, where you would, that guy was, his high life film was holy cow. Yeah. You were run out and go run ahead, but it's even worse when you run away because it track it down and shoot a gap. I have a feeling since he hasn't played in a while. Oh my goodness. That's going to be a cannon. Do you remember that play he had last year against Navy when he blew up the lead blocker? I mean, just, oh yeah, yeah. He blew it back and just destroyed the running back. I think they subbed them out after that play. They're like, all right, we're good here. We've seen enough from Kingston, but I'm with you. This is like the perfect team for him to play going up against Rice. But I think if they do play him, it'll be like 10, 15 snaps just to get out there, feel some contact a little bit. But this could be a big game for Man for Amo because he didn't play at all, at least on
defense. He played in every single special team snap. I'm pretty sure. But again, good opportunity for those young guys and those guys who Notre Dame is going to need later on in the season to get some reps early on. The other guy I want to see speaking of defense is Aiden Pouncy. He's a kid out of Winter Park for those. For those, I don't know. That's in the middle of Orlando. It's in some city. It's kind of weird. But that kid is walling his hell. He's taller than Leonard is. He can play corner or safety. He's one of those very unique players. I heard he had a really good fall camp. They're just so, they're just so good corner. I don't know what you really do. You'll know based on this game because for those that don't know, Rice runs basically Navy's offense, a virgin of it. It's got a lot of option. If you can't tackle that well or you get beat over the top because you bite on everything, play action, you're not planning his rice. So we'll figure out who knows the playbook and understand scheme. But Carl Adams obviously is another easy one to go with. You said Madden for Amo.
Like that's another. He's another kid. He played it. I want to say Jay Sarah, one of the creditors. Yeah, Sarah, you're right. And if it's not maddened to be somebody else, but they have so many linebackers, I'm curious to see how many TFL's. Let's go with that. How many TFL's against Rice? I'm going 14. I think it's going to be awful. I really did. I think they should have 15, especially because they run out of shotguns. So if you just went on the line of scrimmage, you're going to have an opportunity to tackle the guy in the back field. If they do play Poundsy, that'd be pretty interesting because he's so skinny. And does it look like a great tackle? Or maybe he surprises some people. But Joey O'Brien is a guy who's probably going to get a lot more reps as well, considering Brountey Johnson is out. And now he's the third safety. So he's going to get some reps. But he's another guy who struggled attacking a little bit during camp. Now he picked off a bunch of passes. And that certainly bodes well for his future. But it might not bode well for him against Rice. This might be a game where we see a little bit more from Ethan Long just because he's a little bit bigger. He's been around for one more year. But we're naming all these guys.
Every single one was a very highly rated recruit coming out of high school who's incredibly physically gifted. And I mean, Poundsy would have started on so many different Notre Dame football teams in the past, even some good teams. And now he's dirt string. It's just it's crazy. The type of depth they have developed there over on defense. Five years ago, he would have started before his freshman was over if not right out of the gate. What out? Notre Dame just didn't have that kind of talent. You know, one might be six. 21 is when they really kind of ramped it up. 2018 to 2020 were really good, but they didn't have any depth of corner. That was as we saw. Oh, he had played even the third corner at least. I mean, bare minimum, but I digress. With that said, Tyler, please tell everybody where they can find your work.
