But it was great. I love covering Ohio State. It's my favorite thing about life other than my family and the people that are in my life. But it is nice on some of these days when bad losses happen to be able to just get away and go away from the lot of my master's board. And I love it. But at that point, we just need to deal with some of the people on the board. And there's a lot of people on the board want to hash things out and share their feelings.

3:02And that's OK. You share them. You get it out. And then hopefully by Tuesday morning when Ryan Day talks ahead of Kent State, we can move on and proceed with the next game week. But I was happy to kind of be able to enjoy a day with my wife after everything. It went down on Saturday. And I'm sure that you're going to be able to do that. I'm sure that you're going to be able to do that. Yeah, you were a little too happy to be here in sticks in the fourth corner watching that TJ watt. Pick six. We're going to have a Steelers corner at some point during the weeks here moving forward. Since Mick and I are both Steelers fans and the Browns fans are that listen to the show of which there are many are sure to hear what we have to say about their arch rival. And I'm sure Burm would love to hear us talk about the Steelers because he's a Bengals fan. And I'm sure that you're going to be able to do that. Mick Ohio State and Texas. Let's get let's cut to the chase here because Ohio State blew a 20 point lead at Texas. Completely dominated for three quarters every bounce win its way. No bounce when it's way in the fourth quarter. They couldn't get out of their way in the fourth quarter. The defense couldn't get off the field. The offense couldn't stay on the field. The special teams were a disaster because they missed the field goal.

4:02Do we want to start with like. But a little bit of good or do we want to just cut right to what needs to improve because like there's a lot. I guess I was away on Sunday. I watched on television so I didn't really do a full reach. Rewatch got to see some clips and different things. I know you sat down. Watched it put some different plays out on Sunday on the website. Just kind of the things that change in the second half or could have. Essentially 10 different plays were high. I say probably if they make them they win the game at the different points in the second half. You also have done the rewatch and had dots. Let's give you the ball for a minute and go. I so much you kind of just get some takes out or some thoughts. We don't need a rant. We don't need to do anything crazy. Whatever you feel on the top of your head. Let's just get that initial way. That good or bad. Yeah, there's defensive personnel things that have to change. That is becoming more clear. With each not with each snap. Because like. I don't think. Like we're going to name names here. These guys get paid now. Like when it was like free 2021.

5:02Like it's like, oh, you know, you're just kids. Like they're getting paid now. So like you have to be more straightforward with things. And we are becoming more straightforward. But I think this deserves it even more. Like. Peyton Pierce is a leader for this team. He is a good. He is a. I will say this. He's a good player and a leader for this team. And I think that's what I'm going to say. Is he the ceiling raising. Middle linebacker that Ohio State needs in this defense. When it's not as high level as it was last year. One to 11. The answer is no. Ohio State can say otherwise. If it wants to. And I don't expect Ryan Day to say otherwise on Tuesday. When we talk to him. Because I'm hopefully going to be able to ask him about the linebacker. Because I want to know who he thinks is to best linebackers are right now. Peyton Pierce is a good player. He is not a great player. I don't think Riley Petagion is a great player yet. I think Riley Petagion.

6:02In November could be a great player. And I think he deserves the runway to become a great player right now. I think TJ offer deserves the runway to become a great player. Right now. The runway is now the greatness could be against Oregon. The greatness could be against USC. Because I look at USC right now. And I see a team full of freshmen that is perfectly fine giving up a long play to UL Monroe. That is perfectly fine. Giving up 30 points to a terrible team at home in week two. Because they know what they're going to have in November. And this isn't a rant. If it starts to sound like a beginning of a rant. I'm sorry. I'm just kind of a little animated here. I'll how is it has to give it to young guys some runway here? Texas is not the greatest thing to do that for. But those guys were playing well against Texas. Cari Wilder had five snaps and he played well against Texas. And good look. Third and 14. He jumps off sides and makes it third and nine. I'm completely fine with keeping him on the field to make that third and 14 mistake that makes it third and nine.

7:08Because on fourth and nine, he was this close to having a sack of archmating that completely ends the game full stop period. Legend bag. It's one snap. One snap. And Nate Roberts misses a block. Raheem Biles throws him away. Makes a tackle. And we don't see legend again. Like in my and I said defensive, but like overall like you have to give these these young guys a runway at this point. Because they are ceiling raising players. You have given that to J. Timmans. You are already getting a ceiling raising player. And I'm not saying like bench all the veterans. I thought Kenny Jackson was one of the best players on the field on Saturday. I thought Earl Little Jr. was everything that we had heard that he was going to be in camp. I thought he was magnificent on Saturday. The only thing he did wrong was not recover a fumble. It's an oblong shaped ball that doesn't bounce your way sometimes. He was great. A Christian Allegro can play a role in this defense. And look, Peyton Pierce can play a role in this defense make.

8:10But what you are getting from Riley Petagion right now. Is demanding more snaps. Like he is demanding more snaps. He has to get them. I think if you're not going to get a lot from your receivers, not named Jeremiah Smith. You should not get a lot from the younger guys. More than you are right now. I think Brock Boyd and Chris Henry Jr. Should be able to learn on the job more. And. Perhaps they will starting now because there is a small part of me, Nick, that says. It's harder to trust those guys on the road against the number 14 in the country at night. So roll with some of the veterans. And part of me says like Koi Roussau played his first snaps in nine months and it was on the road against the number 14 in the country at night. But like five snaps from part of the water really. It just doesn't sit right with me when you're not getting pressure on the quarterback. And you're throwing bowakinson out there instead of car water.

9:11Again, these guys are being paid. Bowakinson was not good on Saturday. And he wasn't good against ball state. So, you know, if you like to say like a dog and a bark like a dog is probably a dog. So it is what it is. It's like the personnel things that have to change. We're going to have to change whether they beat Texas 23 to three. Or if they lost the Texas 24 to 23 or if they lost the Texas 52 to 10. Some of these things have to happen. And this recruiting class was just simply too good. Now you play Kent State. Then you play an Illinois team that I think is actually kind of bad. And then you play an Iowa team that's not going to score enough points to beat you. Whether you play no matter who you play. So I just think you've got to start to give some of these guys some runway. And then you live with some mistakes that you didn't have in your defense last year. When you had three first trumpets, but understanding that by the time you get to October 31st or even October 17th against Indiana. Because that's a game you absolutely must win now. Like you're going to get a lot out of them.

10:12So I don't want that to be a rant. But like that jumped off the film at me is like these young guys are playing well enough. And they deserve more playing time. So that's not part of the process. Overall, if we asked all sides of the fan base, the Alchemist side, the more pessimist friends, whatever you want to say about the fan base, like the all aspects of it. I think a lot of the majority of fans would have been comfortable with an Ohio State loss to Texas. Majority of them just all things considered the stakes of the CFP, all those things. But when you go through the actual process of the loss and blowing a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter, having a situation where you cannot get more points in the second half. And you're trying to cling to a win against Texas rather than going to go get the win. That is bad. And you're doing it with like you said, players that are potentially more. Floor than they are ceiling. If you lost that game and it's because Jay Timins gave up a 70 yard reception to want Ryan Wingo out of the slot. I think a fan to be disappointed in Jay Timins and just point in that result.

11:12But they would be happy that Jay Timins at least got that rep. And then the next one is on miss his attack one third down and archmaning goes to get a first down. Ohio State fans can live with that because right, the petash on was at least on the field getting that rep. But when you don't have those situations where guys are getting reps and you're innocent, you're in a season right now where you need to go win it all. And you don't know if you have that top end town to do it just yet because some of those guys were young. And you don't have them on the field to learn. Then the whole process then the result all seems for not like it seems like you lost. Because you played the loser game with very bad process and you lost because of it. Instead of having good process and losing like honestly, we can talk about all the different plays in the second half. The decision to go forward on fourth down in the second half I will harder to agree with. It's just a process of that play. I think was bad. You have different things that you can go creatively and do what Jay and my Smith are even tight ends branded in as Chris and junior all those different things to get to yards. And you just ran it right up the middle. Even in the stretch play out like on the edge, you can do different things. And on the first possession, probably the process overall throughout this game was probably was pretty bad.

12:16And that's why I say fanfare frustrated because the result was fine. The process to get to the result was about as kind of strafficking as it could be. Yeah, just because like you go up you get a turnover on the first play of the game. And then you run a toss sweep. Look, I thought actually I'm going to start here because this deserve this needs to be said. I thought Arthur Smith called a very good game. He had a plan to use his tight ends in a way that didn't put them in the way. He got the ball to Jeremiah Smith a lot. He got Devon McEwan wide open at times. He got Brandon in this open at times. Even on third down when Philip Bell drops a pass like that's a good route and a good ball because Arthur Smith calls that play. They get a good route a good ball and you just drop it because he didn't throw the Brandon instead. Philip Bells on the field. So that's another thing. But like a toss sweep on the first when you're down on the four yard line. It takes it from first and go on the four to second and go from the 12. You can't do that. You know why you can't do that because you're in the toss sweep against ball state on from the four yard line.

13:17And guess what? You lost nine yards. So when you ran it against Texas, you lost eight yards. What are you doing? So like there's just just a little moments, man. But you go for it on fourth and two. You have 13 personnel. 13 personnel didn't work last year. You had better tight ends than you did this year. What do you run in 13 personnel for with your second best running back? So that's the first half you're up 10 nothing. That is a point where I say like, okay, if you go for it, that's fine. But you better have a good one. That's like it's almost like your two point play, right? It's fourth and two. But then you tell. Uh. Holly Roe or Laura Rutledge, whichever one he was talking to a half time. It's going to be a four quarter game. Why? You're winning 20 to three, man. It doesn't have to be a four school. You know, uh, I think it was who was it? Was it Tyvis Powell? The tweeted like, Hey, I believe so. Tyvis pop tweeted a quote from a reminder. It doesn't have to be a four quarter game. And Ryan's like, Ryan Day says, we know it's going to be a four quarter game. Why you get the ball to start the second half, man. And then you get the ball to start the second half.

14:18And you make it a four quarter game by punching the Texas from the 39 yard line. If you're going forward at the beginning of the game, go for it on fourth and four from the 39 and just have a better play next time. You know, it's like there are just those kind of things that you rewatch. And the first thing is that defense personnel. The second thing is like, put your players in position to win the moments. You know, you know your defense is not stopping Texas in the second half. Your defense was gassed. They ran 40 plays in the second half. 4 0 40. Texas ran the most place on the last day in like years. On Saturday night, this defense was tired. The idea that this defense without tie tie, tie leg Williams or without Kate and McDonald or without kill bounds was going to get a stop on four. Gold to go situations from the one yard line. That's it's not going to happen, man. So with a minute 20, you have one time out left. If Texas scores there, you put the best player in college football on the field with his high sman trophy candidate quarterback. And a ticker who yeah, just missed one, but also bang one in from 48.

15:21It looked pretty damn good. Go give your offense with eight returning starters a chance to put themselves in a field position and win the game. I thought the second half was all execution. The writing always says coaching scheme or execution. I thought the scheme was good. The coaching at times was malpractice like not letting Texas score there. The execution was inexcusable. Scheme good coaching malpractice from in the moments. Execution not good because he missed having the Q on a wide open throw. They don't execute on defense and get off the field on fourth and six and fourth and nine. So it's just like there are just different things that I you see on film. It's like man. How many of those things have to go like the wrong way in the second half. And it's so weird to think that way because like.

16:22Texas didn't get a single break in the first half, right? Like you get the interceptions you get the this and that. But like. The fun will in the first play of the game. But then they just completely flips in the fourth quarter on top of the high. And I'm executing on top of Ryan Day and the coaching staff missing the moment. And I think missing is more apt and losing. They didn't lose moments. I think they just missed them like they didn't. Maybe they didn't realize when a moment was a moment or maybe they just didn't coach it well. But like they missed moments. And when you combine execute lack of execution with missing moments, you have players not doing there. Holding up their end you have coaches not holding up their end and it equals a 21.44 thing. And like those things just pop man. I understand why fans are frustrated right now. I truly do is it time to fire Ryan Day? No. Is it time to think that this team's going to eight and four? No, who's beating them? I think they just played the number one team in the country by a point and we're up 20 in the first half. Like it's not time to fire people and it's not time to say that they're going to eight and four.

17:22But it's also time to like, hey remember when you lost by one on the road to Oregon and you made necessary adjustments. Why it takes Ryan Day to lose a game to make these adjustments? I don't know. But he typically does them. And if you can take anything from this, I guess it's that they're probably going to adjust, but it shouldn't take a loss. And I'm not silver lining this whatsoever silver lining suck. And that's why it's not you know, I guess the most silver lining we asked anybody there was like, hey, Jalen McLean, like, how do you respond to this? But like, we're not going to silver lining this, but like, I do think that they're going to make some changes. But it's probably because they have to not because they want to. And that's the overall I do agree that they will make some Ryan Day has shown that he will make changes. Why or whether or not they need to happen when they happen like is a debatable thing I understand that completely.

18:23I what I do think is a fair frustration for fans on the longevity of just Ryan Day and the frustrations of him as a head coach. The frustrations with the longevity of Ryan Day and just what he did how he operates as a head coach, I can understand from respect to a lot of these losses like Texas have a similar tone to how they go. There's a situation where high state gets into a talent equity game against Texas or whether that be Georgia or even maybe Indian or Miami last year. There's a lot of situations where Ryan Day and Ohio State put themselves in a spot where they rely kind of on their talent to win and the other team to just make mistakes and like, obviously will make less mistakes. But that's not always going to work. You didn't work on tech against Texas Texas does not make mistakes down the stretch. They executed beat Ohio State by one point in Austin. If you're Ohio State, you need to be in a situation where you get more aggressive and you get more. You try to win the game. I don't know if there's a situation where you go for it on a fourth down that they didn't go for it. If there's a situation where you try and steal positions on a kickoff or upon or something. There is just a situation where Ohio State can get more aggressive and try and go take a win.

19:25You see teams do it to Ohio State all the time with different packages with trick plays, all that type of things. We never really see it from Ohio State and I think that's fair for our fans. They just think that Ryan Day never really gets comfortable enough to go aggressive and just go out of his comfort zone and attack and instead just kind of relies on the team that he puts together winning the game because the other team will make more mistakes. I think, but I think I think, I think, punting from the 39 yard line on fourth and four is out of Ryan Day's comfort zone. That is considered to coach as no man's land. Right? You can't kick a field goal from there, but punting from there is actually pretty stupid because the field position doesn't make sense. Right? And yes, if at 20 to three, you don't get it there. Texas gets the ball with 61 yards to score touchdown and wrestle some momentum from you. Hey, it's 20 to 10. Then we get the ball back and we still feel like we're being aggressive. If you do get it though, the jugular is cut.

20:25If you go up 27 to three, which the Devon McHughan throw could have made it 27 to three as well, I understand that. And so they were being aggressive. But the pun, if you do go for that and it's 27 to three, I promise you, I promise you 25% of that stadium was leaving. They were not okay with what was happening. They were booing Texas off the field. And then you punted and Texas did not do anything with that. I don't know. Texas didn't score on that next possession, but Texas knew that you weren't going to try to be as aggressive as you needed to be to go for the throw. You kept them in the game. That was hope. That was hope. And yes, a couple of bad bounces did happen. Inky Jones had a ball in his fingers. All that bounced off of Ryan Nibblet's chess plate. Cam Coleman has a ball punched out by Peyton Pierce, three buckeys around it. Nobody gets on it. Texas recovers in the red zone, scores touchdown. But like you didn't win those moments and those are unlucky. Don't give me wrong. Those are unlucky. But you had to, you didn't need unlucky moments to lose the game.

21:33If you stay aggressive because not only did you signal to Texas that you weren't going to step on the throat, you sign on to Ohio State play, you sign on to your own players that you weren't willing to step on the throat in the first possession of the second half. You made yourself into a four quarter game because you said you needed to play four quarters. No one told you you had to play four quarters. You told yourself you had to play four quarters. And that's the frustration with Ryan day. That is a. That is a Ryan day thing. That is not a Texas exclusive thing. That has been a Ryan day thing on on most losses. So I can understand again the far out like impacts of how people treat Ryan day maybe I don't always I do not agree with it. I'll fully understand. But I can understand every frustration with how the process goes on a lot of these losses because it continues to repeat itself. Yeah. Yeah. And so like you're allowed to be frustrated Ryan day. I've listened. I've heard from plenty of fans. A lot of fans hated me after the game. Because of things that's fine. Like you can be mad at me. I guess kind of shooting the messenger, but that's fine. We can handle it. Ryan day can handle it too. He's been through worse. The Michigan thing was so much worse for him than this Texas thing is, but I understand why people are frustrated with him. Like don't treat his address.

22:37But like you can be really frustrated with it because of those things. But also like I want people to be frustrated with him while also understanding that like the players messed up to like Ryan day can't go out there and throw a pass to Devon McEwan. Right. Like Julian saying the most accurate quarterback in the country, whenever you want to say about that, a lot of it is like short pass merchant stuff like that. Some of it's deep all, but some of it is like he has the best player in the sport and he threw short a lot last year and he completed 80% of his passes. A slam over the middle with no one around. He completes that throw 99 times out of 100. You just. You you know the ball bounces you Texas fumbles three times in the second half you recover zero of them. That is not statistically what's going to happen every time. Like there were things that happened with the players where you can be frustrated with the players, but also be frustrated with Ryan day. But that doesn't mean that like the player suck and you have to fire Ryan day. It just means like you have to learn from this. I almost swore there. You have to learn from this.

23:44Or else you're going to lose a second game. At Iowa, at Indiana, at USC. I mean, the way that they that they operate right now. I'm not saying that this looks like something put on the radar and how they lost a game at Nebraska. Like that's a trap game because you got Michigan the next week. Michigan's going to play really good defense. You're going to be really efficient against Michigan. So they're not going to give you the ball, but like six times. So like, you know, they weren't efficient in this like a half even when they had the ball they weren't efficient. They had a run run pass. Three and out. They just puts the defense back on the field. Jeremiah Smith drops a slant pass. I know he was kind of getting mug there, but it would care. Like that's a play that you're all American receiver and generational receivers got to come up with like there's just a lot of things, Mick. And I know it sounds like we're kind of like. You know, if you're in here, if you're in there, but like that's what happens when you blow a 20 point lead is like there's so many different things. And we didn't even get into the map of Trisha at all because I do think that like the offense butterred it put the defense in into pretty tired spots.

24:46But like man, there were some zones that Texas was finding. There were some things that Texas was doing. Or else like I feel like I feel like if map of Trisha's got like a change up, you got to throw it right now. Like you've been given them a lot of were up 10 fastball. You're given them a lot of were still up six fastball or you're given a lot of like, hey, it's 20 to three. Here's fastball. Like not you know, it doesn't have to be a curveball, but you probably should bring a change up at some point. And they didn't and whether that's because they couldn't or because they didn't have the guys. But they got to figure out the past rush because our chad. All day throw at times. And I think it starts with some personnel. They got to figure out the linebackers. That's all personnel. And then they got to figure out. What they want to be with a lead. Because they couldn't decide if they wanted to be aggressive or if they wanted to be conservative. They put it on four down. That's too conservative. They threw it 16 times. That's pretty aggressive.

25:49They couldn't decide what they wanted to be. It's like, who are you? When you have a lead on the road against a really good team. When you have a lead at USC. Who are you? When you have a lead at Indiana with 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Who the hell are you man? Find out who you are and then be that because you couldn't decide against Texas and it got you beat. So that's that's kind of where we leave things. I hope there's a couple things in there that'll have say fans can sink their teeth into. I hope it makes a lot of sense. We're going to before we get out of here. We're going to talk a little bit of. Of Modelo moments because I do think there's a Modelo moment to be had here. I don't even know if I can say cheers to the Modelo moment, but it is a little bit of a cheer so the Modelo moment because we're going to get some answers on Tuesday. My Modelo moment, Mick, which please drink responsible for drinking Modelo. You know where this is really fresh. This is we're going to learn from this. There's got to be some answers. So I'm excited to get into the press conference room and talk to Ryan Day on Tuesday and figure out where his head is at right now. What went wrong with this certain thing? What personnel needs to change with this? What was going through his head with a minute 20 to go when he's letting clock run out and he's trusting his defense. You can always got eight returning starters on offense and a timeout in his pocket. Like there's a ton of stuff that we got to learn about what happened here. Because yes, the Texas game is in the past and Ohio State can put it in the past. And I think Ohio State should put it in the past right now because you've got to go win. Nine out of the next 10 games to make the college ball playoff, but really you should just go try to win 10.

27:52But like we've got to figure this out because it has to be spun forward. Nobody gives a. A Dern as. As the unsanitary would say about. Can't state. So now it's all about what happened in Texas and what are you going to do to fix it? So that's my Modela moment. That's the demo. He's got to meet the moment. It's Ryan Day. I was you and I were both in there. It was an awkward time because it was the national signing day press conference. The one immediately following the 24th, Michigan game. But he's going to get asked a lot of questions and I really do hope I understand fans. Whether it's like, oh, we don't ask enough tough questions. I know Spencer has actual pointed questions that he wants to get answered from people about what's going on. I think Spencer will ask a good question. I hope that the beat and everybody else continues to ask good questions because it can be an reform. Tuesday. It's just it's about how we handle it. So I guess it's a little bit of the beat. I'm a Delma, but it's about Ryan Day and how he handles and answers these questions as well. Because it kind of sets the tone and sets the messaging for the rest of the season.

28:53Yeah, I think he's going to be asked about the linebackers. I think he's going to be asked about the defensive line and lack of pressure. I think he's going to be asked about some of the situational stuff that I just don't think that he was particularly great at. I think he's going to be asked about the freshman. The freshman because they just have to play again. Give them the runway now and you will read the rewards later, man. Go back to the beginning of this video. You got to give him this runway. They're too talented. I can't say they're too good because I don't know how good they are just yet. Like I made this point on the board. I'm not trying to get back into it, but like. If cary-wilders on the field, I am. My guess is because we know cary-wilders a good pass rusher at this point. My guess is there are questions about his run support. And then also if you take Peyton Pierce or a Christian Allegro off the field, you're probably sacrificing a little bit on the margins as far as run support. With cary-wilder, probably Petagion, TJ Alfred out there.

29:54Maybe not, perhaps. But like. I think it feel like you got to let him grow as a run stopper instead of just. You know, giving him five snaps, showing us what he can do as a pass rusher and then shelving him. So like he's going to get asked about all these things.
