About this episode

In August 2010, Jennifer Leigh Stewart was found dead in a Vanier parking lot in Ottawa. She was 36, a Cree woman, a mother, and a sex worker, and she was killed with an axe in a detail police kept out of the public eye for years.

For two and a half years, nothing. Then a young man in segregation at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre told a guard he wanted to confess to a murder. Adrian Daou told police he killed Jennifer to become a billionaire rap superstar. He also confessed to a second killing that fell apart almost immediately. He was symptomatic and on suicide watch at the time. There was no weapon. There was no DNA connecting him to Jennifer. Another man's DNA was found on her body.

He was convicted anyway. Then the Court of Appeal threw it out. Then a second jury convicted him all over again.
