So, welcome ladies and gentlemen to Combox Live with the Game Lives on. I am Bairam Kasi and you can find at Tef Mango on Twitter with me. For one last time in this series is Rob Byron. You can find him at Mosul Judge on Twitter and we are here to review the Edge Bastent Test England Managed to Defeat Pakistan by 8 Wickets on day 4. You have swept the series 3 and 0. Rob, did you know that Pakistan has never been swept by England in a test series before? This was the first time. I heard this but I don't believe it. I think it was when, do you remember when draw was a result that they used to have in cricket a long time ago? They used to be a thing called a draw where they all just blocked for ages and then they shook hands at the end or in England it rained. So I assume it was back in those days because it's not possible for these two teams to draw anymore. Yeah, I mean look there must be a fair few series where one test was drawn and you know
the rest were defeats or losses for one particular team but yeah, I think Pakistan have never been swept by England but I can remember England being swept in the UAE, the Ajmer Lennabdur Raman series. You must remember that one. Very much so. Yeah, that was a fun time. Anyway, not so fun anymore for Pakistan. They have obviously been swept but also some other unwanted records in their last 19 test matches in Senna. They have not managed to win a single test match. They've also lost 11 out of 12 away test matches in the recent past and they had never won at Edgebaston. That remains as well. It was really poor showing Rob barely contest. They only had a few, a bit of spark Pakistan towards the real end of the series. You could say day 10 and day 11 but other than that England were completely all over them and you know as good as England were, Pakistan were also poor and we all were expecting you and I in particular. A lot of chaos, a lot of fun, two-floor teams got none of that.
Yeah, it was, I mean basically we had to wait for Razorola to turn up, didn't we, before we got anything fun to watch. It was, I mean we could have just been here morning that it was the worst series ever and genuinely that one guy made it worthwhile I thought. Yeah, nine days of crap and one day of super fun and then Pakistan fooled us into thinking that they might make a game of it in the last one when they got two wickets in the first over, depending on 30 and then they just went back to being completely hopeless but it was funny. Yeah, they went double Pakistan, right? They threatened to Pakistan hard when of course one of the bus pulls off in Oli Robinson. First over of day four, first ball in fact, Ben Ducke is gone in the same over, he gets in a familiar game as well and the odds went from what a thousand to one to ten to one. Was it Rob? Yeah, so it was, as I was saying on our live thing, the only reason it was only a thousand to one when they were that far behind in the second and in and two down was because the
bookies can't offer you bigger odds than a thousand to one. And then they got it all the way back in to ten to one. That was when Razorola and Abbas were still going before the ninth wicket fell. But I'm back in Sanit, ten to one to win the game and it would have been the single most spectacular comeback statistically or betting odds wise in the history of the game. It would have been better than heading Lee, it would have been better than Kusau Pereira and we don't even need to talk about it is better than Stokes, better than all lucky Stokes because that's not in the same category as those good ones. Yeah, anyway, no hundreds in the series. In fact, a record has been set for three match test series, most fifties, twenty in total, zero hundreds and a fair few pricotters got close, right? Like Soucha Keelie got ninety seven, Sean Masood ninety five, Harry Brooke ninety one, but you don't see this too frequently. Yeah, at one point it looked like Razorola might become the only centurion in this test series and that would have been a story wouldn't it? It is. Yeah, if it wasn't the very end of the day, maybe he would have batted the extra ten
minutes required for him to turn up, maybe even one more over. You know, he got multiple sixes in a couple of overs. Yeah, I mean, if he'd have got a century, that would have been it. We just all stopped the series, everybody shakes hands and we award him a play of the series, play of the year, wisdom test cricket of the century, all that sort of stuff. Yeah, it was great, but it put a shine on an absolute disgusting mess of a proceeding, you know, two point eight test matches that we watched because because we'd have had Burger all to talk about. Yeah. Other than an average England team played like a professional cricket side with let's face it three bowlers and not much else and utterly battered a Pakistani team that was in even more disarray than they normally are, which you're saying something, isn't it? I mean, look, it's fair to say that Pakistan cricket is an absolute shambles. England cricket was also in tatters, you know, after the drama in the New Zealand series,
of course, basketball, died, Ben Stokes retired and classic Ben Stokes fashion making it all about himself. And then now, you know, this series, both teams are coming into it after having not performed too well. Eight and nine, I think at the start of the series of seven and eight, I think it was seven and eight. And it Pakistan played like tenth England. I mean, look, sure, they can only face what's in front of them. And of course, you know, we still don't know where to place them as a team because Pakistan was so god awful, but you've got to give credit to them. They outperform Pakistan across all three facets, whether it be batting, bowling and fielding. And then also, you know, just the fact that they were quite clinical and ruthless for the most part, not so much in the last two days of the series. But apart from that, thoroughly professional and it's, well, you've got to give them credit and Joe root as well as leader that at least, you know, they were able to divert the attention from all the off-field stuff back to the cricket because Brydon was incarcerated in between test matches and that didn't impact England. So there's something.
Yeah. Like I say, they only really had three bowlers that did all the damage. They got all the wickets, right? What did thatkinson get for in 67 overs and three of them right at the end? So what happened with that concern is I couldn't believe it. And I said this at the time, how many wickets atkinson got at the start of his career? It was a miracle. The run's more believable for me, but the amount of wickets he was getting and the strike rate at which he was getting them was incredible. And that was just luck. It wasn't just luck. He pulled, he pulled, he pulled fine, he pulled well. But a lot of it is when you get wickets in that, you know, clusters like that, everything went right. The catches were being taken. The, you know, the, the umpiles calls are going his way and all that sort of thing. And what happened in this series is it, it regressed to the mean that that's a statistical fact that things do that over a big enough sample size. And Gus Atkinson is not going to average 10 with the ball in Test Match cricket, which he was at the start. He'll probably end up averaging somewhere near a 30.
And what this series did, he was unlucky this series, right? The catches were going down off him. He wasn't getting the umpiles calls. He was, you know, the balls were landing safe that previously they were like magnetized straight to the field as hands and all that sort of stuff, right? So that's what happened. I don't think he bowed particularly poorly. Yeah. When, when you got Oli Robinson, who's getting a wicket, um, he ended up in the series getting a wicket every 25 balls, which is every four and a bit over. But until the end, he was getting a wicket every three overs. And it's, it's pretty difficult when you're coming in as, as the fourth person that bowls to do all that much. You know, when Robinson got them all out before you come on. Yeah. Because it was Oli Robinson series completely, you know, 21 poles, an economy of two, right? This is, this is going way back. This average of eight, eight point seven, five or something, wasn't it? Um, it's a ludicrous series from, from Oli Robinson. And it seemed like all he had to do, it wasn't like he was changing it up all the time.
He was suddenly working this out. He was working back to him over. He just waddled in, put the ball in the right spot, let the wobble scene do the rest. And Pakistan had zero ones. And none of them had enough to it. And he just did it over and over again. Yeah. And he may well have test series in his career where the conditions don't exactly suit his type of bowling. But bloody hell, that was, that was difficult to face. And then you had just Tom coming in when, when the bowlers are like, well, we, we're just about trying to get used to this keeper up 78 miles an hour, doing a bit off, off the length. And then Tom rolls up at 92 miles an hour and just tries to bang the stumps down. If very, very different things are face and you've got Archer trying to take your head off as well, those three guys, I, and, and to be fair to them, they stayed fit. And I don't think this, these four have never been an attack before in a test match because for various reasons, you know, mucking about reasons and picking other people and no one
is ever able to stay fit to be fair. They played a whole series where they were all fit. They all bowled plenty of overs. So Robinson, bold 90 overs in three test matches. Just Tom, bold 63 and Archer, bold 75, right? It's not an insane workload because they kept on in them out for nothing. Yes. But they all stayed fit, which is a good thing for England. Just England now know they've got an attack where there's three of them should be bowling together as much as possible moving forward. I mean, look, that was the main point of difference between both teams. I know that England obviously were a better batting side and a better fielding side as well, but it's, it was the variety in England's attack and those four guys coming together. And look, there's no doubting the fact that it was all year Robinson summer. I'd take it one step further because he was player of the match versus New Zealand. He's been taking multiple wickets in his first over very regularly. It's become kind of a thing, right? A basketball's off in all year Robinson, essentially on day four because we've gotten so used to all he doing this. He took a wicket with the first ball of the series. As you mentioned, look, 21 wickets at less than nine a piece and he's taking a wicket
every three or four overs. It's insane. And he's got over a hundred test wickets now at a sub 20 bowling average. So he's in bonds and boom, right? Territory. He had the ball on a string all all series, wobble, see masterclass. And then you look at the way he tormented up the luschefique sticks batting innings for shafiq in the series. Five times he goes out to all he Robinson, even in this last test match, which was his weakest test, by the way, three for 15 and 11 overs followed by two for 54 in 23 overs and add to that a 46 ball 15. Like how did he not bag player of the match or Razaullah and Dan Lawrence runs away with it, right? Because he's scored a 50 of 47 and then he's taken five wickets as well. So he could have had a record over there. Four player of the match awards in a single summer or back to back to back to back. And then they said no. I think because it finished in reasonable time, they didn't just want to give him all the awards and then go home. So they get decided to give it to someone else. I think I get it that you always give man of the match or you nearly always give man of the match to somebody who's been on the winning team.
But only one person made that match in any way interesting. And that was Razaullah, right? And considering he was just basically called down from a mountain when he didn't have his phone on him and stuff. And he wasn't sure where his passport was and he was thinking he was going to play the cleathops. This isn't made up any of this. He's thinking he's going to be playing the cleathops this week. And then it's high mate. Oh, yeah, he's got these messages on my phone. What'd you want? Am I supposed to play for cleathops this week and not next week? No, can you play in the test series against England, please? And he just went and did it and he absolutely killed it, right? He gets root with his first over, gets forfer. Yes, he was expensive, but of course you're going to be expensive when you've never played at this level and you've just been flown in for the test match. And so back like of course he was a man of the match. He made the game interesting. Yeah, I mean, look, he only had eight first class games under his belt, Krasala. So he never even probably experienced day four all too frequently, right? Like this was all new to him. You could see that he he gotten really stiff by the end, but the way he entered into this test, like, look,
removes Joe root with his fourth ball in test cricket. And we're not talking about some random batter. We are talking about the best batter of the 2020s. We are talking about someone who might someday break such in record and has 14,000 plus runs to his name. And he gets him, hurrys him for pace and he's a cracked MLBW, then gets Emilio Gatedchop on Jamie Smith cotton, bold. He takes four for one, 48 in 23 overs. And it is still a forfer in his debut test bowling innings, because even though there's that fact that for any bowler in history who's bowling England for a spell of over 20 overs, this was the most expensive one. But like we've been continuing to say, you expect an undercooked rookie to spray it around. But he's got a nice slingy or wippy action, quite like a right handed Wahab Riyaz. Very, very exciting. And last day, day four, they gave him the new ball. That was the right call. But he was expensive. I think he gave away like 39 runs in 5 overs. But what else do you expect? Look at what he did with the bat. He gave us the best moment of the entire series, man, went full on happy Gilmore.
He had a very binary nature to himself. Like, if it's full, it's golf swing, if it's not full, it's a baseball swing, it's in the stands, it's in the under construction stand as well, which he hit twice. And the exuberance of youth was just so amazing to watch. Like breaks his bat twice, takes the helmet off versus the spinner. Then once he's at Judge Delby W, he's storming off only from Muhammad Ali to call him back and then they review it and he survives. And then he's stopped next ball. So it doesn't get any any more rookie than that. But some of those shots, man, I mean, I know you've replayed that six versus Dan Lawrence where he uses his feet plenty of times. Then I remember Ollie Robinson, who's been unplayable all series. He literally back foot punches him for four in a way that Pakistan batters haven't managed to 43 ball half century in his debut test match, 81 of 63. It was one of the most exhilarating cricket experiences that I've ever, you know, been at. And I just, I mean, we were all wowed that one 21 run partnership with Muhammad Abbas, who himself was very impressive, 21 with the bat and then 42.
So 63 runs were scored by Abbas in this test match, right? Which is insane. And he also took 13 wickets in this series at 25 apiece and was Pakistan's player of the series and should have had more if there was some better fielding on display. But it was just those two guys essentially who dug Pakistan out of a hole. Pakistan could have suffered two innings defeats in three games and they went on to post a target of 130 for England. And that was just incredible. We weren't even prepared for day four. Harmi was all packed. Yeah, there's a lot of good. Rob. Yeah. Yeah, I was packed and told my wife that I would be home and then I turned into a big fat liar because they were so awesome. I've officially applied to the ICC if I can adopt that shot that you played off Dan Laurence as one of my own children and say that it belongs to me. Because that was like my favorite thing in cricket. That one shot is my favorite thing in cricket for at least a year. Like I can't start watching it.
I just I just want to can you get a tattoo of a gift because that's what I want. I want a tattoo of a gift and I can just do that and look at that shot whenever I want because that was so good. You just go and watch that over and over again instead of like worrying about your life because looking looking at the averages and the numbers from this series. I mean, the bats are all struggling, right? Nobody did a great Harry broke average 50 something and no one else did. Good good series for some people bad series for others. Pakistan you can draw lines through most of them, can't you, right? Even for Harry Brooker, it's a failure because he was averaging like 85 or something with his Pakistan. He's only average 50 in this series. Yeah. And they kept him quiet because he didn't hit his six and his strike rate was sub 80 and that's not Harry Brooker of the last couple of years, did it? Because he's terrorized Pakistan with some of the enormous innings and the molten stuff. I think what what it's done for the England batting moving forward is it's created a selectorial headache because they're going to be facing
extremely different bowling. When they come up against South Africa, we don't know whether a bar does fit. But if you're facing Robard and Marco Janssen, you're, you need to be on it, right? You need to be informed and you need to be ready. So running through it, duck, it's not Annie's tiny and he could, you know, they're going to try and take Duck, it's head off. And if he's not informed, he's going to be fending it to the slip cordon because he can't leave the ball. He's started developing some sort of leaving potential, but he doesn't really, you know, when he nicks off first ball yesterday, you're like, OK, this guy's in really bad form. And since he got drunk and wandered around and that sod filmed him, he hasn't played very well. You know, he's not, he's not played well for a year, has he? The only 100 that any English batter scored this summer was Ben
Ducke but that seems like a long time ago versus New Zealand. Look, I think there's still a lot of positives. Yes, you can say that Ben Ducke is really struggling for runs and he doesn't look like the same opening batter that he used to. But I don't know. The jury still out on Amelia Gay, of course, he should have been run out on 12 if we think about it. But he scores those tough 60 runs when the ball is doing a lot. And I think that even though he was dismissed for a duck in the fourth innings, he'll probably be on that plate of South Africa. The issue is that on a good day, I feel Amelia Gay's worth 60 runs and does he start because Jacob Bethel will be back and then he probably probably told this. This is the issue, right? So he's got to 50 three times out of 11. OK, he's not setting the world on fire. Is it? But he hasn't got past 60 anytime in 11 innings. And he's found different ways to get out. He's been LB got LB a couple of times. I did everybody else. He got bold in one in when he got 60 got bold, didn't he? But call all the other times. New Zealand worked him over. Yes, he got a couple of 50s, but then they found him out. And that's what worried me. It's like, you know, they didn't quite realize how to bolt him.
And then he got a couple of 50s again. So they went, oh, this is what we do. And they just nailed it. Yeah. And he's going to come up. He's averaging 24 and he plays away from his body a lot. Like, that is a recipe for disaster, right? Is, yeah, is again, I know I know technical guru, but the thing I've noticed a lot is, as you say, the hands are so far away from the body a lot. And that feels to me like a recipe for disaster against South Africa, but you can't change them now. You can't go to South Africa and go, well, we're going to have two different guys or make Bethel do it or make Cox do it. They can, right? They might. But then you have the problem where you've now got two wicketkeepers. And the one that they've, they've, you know, pinned their colors to was Jamie Smith. And when he hurt his finger and they let Cox do it, we all realize that Cox is the better wicketkeeper. I think that was that was very, very clear to everybody that Cox is the better wicketkeeper. If we didn't know it before, we know it now. So then they have an issue with what they do with him. Is Jordan Cox a number three? He did well. I'm not sure he is. So, so that's an issue in itself.
And then you've got what do you do when Bethel comes back? Because now he's got that Lawrence who bossed it. Who average, what did he average? 47 in the suit. I honestly feel like Emilio Gagos out because I'd open with Jordan Cox. He was opening for a fair bit of this series anyway because he was in quite early. And look, he batted in five innings three or half centuries, even towards the end. You know, he had the better half century than root. His unbeaten 59 because it was chanceless. He's a very punchy lad as far as his stroke making his concern. And he's pretty strong off his legs as well. He was exceptional behind the stumps, both keeping up with the stumps. And back, two splendid catches down the leg side once one against the spinner. Dan Lawrence and then the barber dismissal where he really shows his acrobatic nature. I really, really enjoyed watching Jordan Cox in this series. I think he's a real fine throw Dan Lawrence into this as well. His 47 ball 50 and ultimately is out for 65. But what he managed there was for the most part risk free attacking cricket. And he completely takes the game away from Pakistan on the morning of day two. And he scored what three half centuries in four innings.
And I think he was a third high scorer as well in the series. And this is a guy who's informed five first class hundreds in the county championship earned his stripes was there on merit. And those were two spots which were in contention. And at least I feel like England have found themselves two guys who are ready to put their hands up and do a job. And in both Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence, I feel like I feel like those are two very, very big positives for England in addition to that a very diverse and varied pace bowling attack. I agree. I think I think they have guys that have come out in in immense credit. But I still don't think they know what their 11 is going to be against South Africa. And they've got no real time to work it out. It's not like there's going to be they're all going to be playing loads between now and there. I don't think England are any good. I have not been swapped. I think the the lucky thing due to the self-inflicted retirement of Stokes and the drunken shenanigans of cars. Is that England now have a much better attack than they had. And I wasn't I didn't think I'd be saying that when those two disappeared.
But this looks like the right attack. They've still been papering over the cracks of the fact they have no spinner. Right. So so that's been done. The funny thing of this series is is everyone went on about how bad Pakistan's opening partnership was rightly so. Right. They average three. I mean, three England. I miss you. Yeah. England average. Don't have to read them all out. England average 14. And their best was 36. Right. That's no good. Just because Pakistan was a bomb in a little England was still crap. But they got a big. It's a proper for number Rob zero zero five seven and zero. That's how bad their opening stands were. Yeah. Terrible. But England's were crap as well. And they were they were getting worse. Why aren't they ended with a zero? And when you have two outer form openers and you're not sure who your number three is and I assume they find a way to get Bethel back in. I'm not sure why Bethel's an automatic pick, but it feels like he is. I think they have big concerns about what they do with their batting order. And and the the lucky let's be honest, the lucky 60 odd for root will have done
him in the world of good because you wouldn't have wanted him to have had a whole series of not really doing it. Yeah. I think they just built everything around root and broke and hoped for the best. Somebody's going to have to average more like 80 against South Africa. And they probably need both of those guys to show up and then one of the others to come with them. But true. Yeah. Okay. I'm I'm still not sold on on marching and did, but the attack looks a lot better, doesn't it? Also, if Jordan Cox takes the gloves, then Jamie Smith can be a frontline batter. And that might all go well for him. Look, talking about busted fingers, right? We've seen a fair few in the series. Sean Masoot entered the series with the fractured finger. It was pretty poor showing from him after barring that last settings. Also streaky and lucky. And then you had barbarism didn't play it headingly because of an injured finger, Rizwan injured his fingers plenty of times at lords. And then Jamie Smith not deemed fit enough to keep wicket comes and smashes a counter attacking 69 with a busted finger. So I would imagine that if you take the wicket keeping bit out, you could have Jamie Fritz, Jamie Smith has a frontline batter and he could do well.
And and just on Joe root, he's had a very tough summer, right? I think he's he scored like two or three half centuries to in this series. And maybe one against New Zealand. I can't remember. And his unbeaten 62 towards the end, you'd have to say that's also very lucky. Because on 23, he was bold off a no ball where Muhammad Ali over stepped and just when Pakistan looked to Pakistan, they, they Pakistan even harder. And then when he was on 34, Abbas, to his edge and the slip fielders, we're just looking at each other. Like you, you'd have raw barren in the slits to better. So I'd still give him some credit for putting the bad balls away. Absolutely cashed in on any width offered in that innings, right? But you're right. You're not wrong when you say that it's still looking a bit shaky. And if root and broke down too well, then who is going to really get the big ones? Right? Essentially. Yeah, because nobody on either side got a big score in this series. As you said, no, no hundred for first time ever or whatever it was. Yeah. Yeah, it's it's it's not good preparation. It had Pakistan had those bits where they did session, the odd session of amazing
bowling. It was only a, it was only Abbas and and they won't face anything like Abbas against South Africa. So they haven't had good preparation home where there was a lot of clouds about and it was nibbling around and doing all that. They're now going to go to South Africa where they're going to get bombed. And I think South Africa will have watched that and be licking their lips. Even though even though at times England as a unit did pretty well, they it's like having a tune up for a for a big heavyweight boxing match. When you're just battering some, you know, guy who's ranked 60 in the world that they've got from the local butchers or whatever, it's going to be a much stoner task ahead for England. Pakistan now have a bit of hope. I think the, as I said to you yesterday, the fact that Abbas is 36 and he hasn't played as many tests as 36 is a prime example of how you can be wrong as a team of selectors over a long period of time. Does he carry on? Do they still decide that he can't do it at home? Sure that like Razor has turned up but he went at six and six points.
I'm making over, right? He's not the answer. More than that. In his four thinnings or in the four thinnings, he went for 39 runs in five. I remember you, Jared and I were sitting together and Jared kept saying it's probably time to take him off and he wasn't wrong. So look, I do think Razor did provide that sort of X factor. He wasn't in force. So it was a point of difference and Pakistan's attack which was very samey and one dimensional all series. At least it had some sort of a spark all of a sudden, but he's raw. He's not going to be the solution to all their problems with the bat. Do you know he leveled three records? I think we've had this conversation, but he has the highest score now. The joint highest score as a number nine batter in his debut test, which is Corbin Bosch is also 81 and Razor has also 81. Most sixes in an in England test match. So a test match on English soil. He's leveled with Ben Stokes and most sixes on your debut test match. He's leveled with Tim Southe of all people. So fascinating how he levels three records. It doesn't break a single one and I love that. Yeah.
Yeah, I was was sat with all the proper journalists in the press conference. And I'm obviously the new the new boy in the room and I was handsome boy in the room. Supposed to supposed to like behave myself and not break protocol, but when it finished, I just legged it after Razor and stopped him and shook his anise and I just loved that. I thought you're absolutely brilliant. That was fantastic and he was very humble and shook my hand and said, you know, thanks very much or thank you. Thank you. Because you know, he's he's English is not there yet. His cricket isn't there yet. He's bass it like if he bets like that forever, even if half the time he only faces five balls, it's fun. As I was saying the other day, I think someone like Melbourne renegades who, you know, gamble sometimes on on their overseas or some, you know, they don't have the Melbourne stars money. Let him have a go. So let's see what he does because look at what Bababa did in the in the big bass right nothing and and as did some other Pakistan players go and like
Ralph is the guy that's bossed it isn't in in the BB let him have a go and let him do a bit of batting and see what happens with him right because he could be rubbish and he could be amazing, but but it would grow the big bash because they want some Pakistani bums on seats for the big bash or watching from elsewhere clearly with what they were doing last year. I think it's a great time on the on the back of that hype to let him have a go give him, you know, let's see what he can do on those quick pitches with the ball who knows like no one likes night miles an hour. The tail end is dope. It's got a crap that's in the BBL right and there's enough ad bowlers for him to wander in a good entry point. As I said to you the other day, baron, when when let's say you've got you've got 60 for one at the end of the power play. Let him come in and see what he can do. Feeh is nine sixes you want right like. It's worth a go his cricket is just very watchable he's box office absolute blockbuster of a cricketer because if he's bowling it's a very nice action to look at and he's either going to go for plenty or he's going to have the batter's very, very bothered and he his speeds were consistently in that 90 miles per hour range at least at the start they were I know he tires off later and of course his body isn't used to this but he is quick he is a terrible quick express got wheels on him and then with the bat he's just.
He's blessed with incredible hand I coordination there's nothing much else to it and you shared that clip this morning was it where he was playing a domestic game for Pakistan and that was a helicopter shot for six versus us then. So he's used to smashing express space that much we know there's no surprise anymore that he takes both of Joffar Archer and Josh tongue to the cleaners and my god some of those sixes man he was just seeing off. I once made a pair in a club which is almost impossible to do but I've been obsessed with batting my entire life and so I put that into my new book the art of batting being that I'm not very good at that skill I just wanted to talk to other people who were so I hit up as many compact as I could just to talk about that role driver. I'm Laura a B2V is to a second car a roster up CZ Bates now so he's saying in chapel and so many many many more I wanted bad is to talk about how they and their friends made right because that is the art of that. And that concern all three of them who who had a brilliant series all three of them did really really well he was belting all of them everywhere for multiple sixes right it was great no one got away with it and we thought Lawrence might have got away with it when there was like you know
one over left in the day anyone how all know this one's good and that that's one of my genuinely one of my favorite shots ever it really is I mean I'm just watching the helicopter shot again it's on my Twitter everybody's you want to have a look really really good why not let him have a go right let's see what he can do the thing that I loved about him is again in the press conference a bass was doing a lot of the talking for him and somebody asked you know basically you've hardly played any cricket where on earth is that batting come from anyone hang about he's done that before because when he got his 50 something batting number nine in first class he said to the coach they were following on and he was the only one that got the gun she said can I open and the coach are in yeah all right you open if you want you got a hundred and he banged it everywhere in first class cricket so he's already done it he's 20 I'm not saying he's going to average 25 it with the bat in test much cricket probably won but he might let him have a go let's let's see what he can do I don't think that they should the biggest concern that there are two things where where this this story ends badly one is he just disappears you know they he loses his phone again and he goes back to the
mountains of Pakistan losing because you know they're hopeless sometimes at looking after this sort of talent and who knows what what we're going to do with the subectors and the management everything is it's it's total total chaos oh yeah we can't even get that one way we lose in the other way baron that we lose him is if they do what they did with Shaheen Shahi 3d and that seems to are and they just go oh my god we've got something here his own coach before this series said he's not ready yet we need 18 months with him we want him playing for the is it the Shaheen's we want him playing for the a side we we need to to get his pathway sorted and instead they've thrown him in and they've gone bang they cannot just make him go you're going to be a PSL captain because you're famous now we're going to make you play in every test every ODI every T20 and we're going to bang you out everywhere and just just vlog him to death because he's not quite ready yet we've seen that from his folding he's not quite ready yet he's back in the Super fun in in in an hour and a half of utter chaos but for God's sake Pakistan look after him I mean I don't think they will I can't feel very optimistic or
encouraged because we have evidence of this story repeating itself where you get something special and they completely ruin it but here's to hoping that he bucks the trend Razaullah because he put asses on seats man we didn't get full houses in edge baston but day three it was as close to a full house we got the crowd was buzzing and they were cheering him on and look they were other parks and batters did will I thought Azanavais love his square drives and cover drives and his little nudges on the onside but his 59 was a good 59 a compact 59 Barbara's him yet again misses out on the elusive 10th test 100 hasn't scored a test 139 innings now and nearly four years fell on 76 bounced out again but that was still a good knock shan musul streaky dropped on 13 by benducket who dropped three catches in this test match and then dropped on by Theo Wiley on 40 who also dropped two catches in this test match but that 95 no one remembers it was only about Razaullah and that was that he was the only story but Pakistan cricket does this right like Simon you was playing the CPL against non-test bowlers in t 20s on different pitches and they drafted him and of course he bags a pair that tells you everything you need to know about Pakistan and three debut dance I mean Razi Hori did all right but he wasn't ready
and in round around our barely contributed and I do not understand why Mike essence convinced that three and a half bowlers in test cricket can help you win matches because Simon you been Rondava combined on to fourth bowlers of Pakistan tactically also got a lot of things wrong England played it safe they were unchanged and let's face it they won an important toss as well even if it wouldn't have mattered I think box and still would have lost but that day one was difficult a lot of people were calling a flat it a flat pitch then it didn't it wasn't flat it flattened out later that day one pitch has 14 wickets on it there was swing in the air point nine degrees seam of the deck and and variable bounce so that that part just did my head in and every time parks and better than we had overcast guys as well these aren't excuses this is just telling people what happened because I do believe that if this happened the other way around England still would have managed to win but lots and lots of stuff wrong for Pakistan I don't see an end to this and yeah feel valley was interesting though Rob right like you could have been feel valley if you were a war extra lead I would have done much better than the wall is no question about that he is presumably a very good fielder and sometimes in life you get given chances that nobody gets and you must so when somebody says your what how old is he 2021
and you're given this opportunity in front of loads of people to go and play for England as a fielder right you're suddenly you're playing for England and your only job is to feel he's meant to be good at it and he got as man as on talksport told us 350 pounds to go out and play cricket for England and he took a catch on the first day that he got to do it and it an absolute dolly and he thought was really funny and he high five everybody and stuff and then he got another dolly the next day and he dropped it and then he made a total hash of the of the Baba one of the third or whatever I'll be a bit late I think that was really a catch but it still does it was a catch if you're a really good fielder and your only job is fielder you should take that yeah Max what would it if anyone wants subfielders who aren't kept Rob Baron is available he is a professional fielding critic and how good do I look to I'm going to bring the average looking man up in your squad as well absolutely go check out the Robin Thapa video where Rob Baron takes 95% of his catches also Harry Brooke finally matures that is really important I
think we need to talk about this he scores 75 but he bats out the day and he after a counter attacking start he really weathered this storm so that's another positive for England apart from the bowling attack and like we said like Gus Atkinson doesn't take wickets but he didn't bowl all too poorly four wickets at 66 still pretty pretty interesting um Pakistan some last notes were really pathetic with the bat in the series words are not enough to describe it in the first earnings of this test they were bold out for 133 33.5 overs the lowest number of overs it it had taken England to bowl them out and after 171 135 110 194 and 133 Razal Lina bars essentially helped them to get to 449 which is the highest ever total in the second earnings versus England in test matches where do you see this team because yes England were you know when they post 453 and they lead by 320 you were thinking Pakistan could be batting twice and they might lose by an inning so they showed some fight but as a batting unit do you think they can do better at home perhaps on Asian surfaces because it's looking rather bleak Rob
there's not much to talk about at all it's it's uh it's got to the bit where it often has done with with Pakistan down the years where it feels like you got to rip it up and start again and I think what what goes massively against that is the guys that did it in the very last innings of the tour were Baba and Sharma sued so you can't really go oh well we're going to start again without Baba and Sharma sued because who who the hell do you put in instead it's a very very difficult one what we must remember in all of this that ultimately it isn't the players fault that Pakistan I performed so badly in this series because the people above them making the decisions that the management not the coaches fault either because the coach didn't know he had the job a week you go right they got that the all the coaches but I think I think they're sacking each other and themselves and then they're like oh well I let this let this guy do it and then he comes in they sack him how many coaches are there in the last two years like 15 or so it's a joke right like yeah if you've got to go okay let's identify how we do it um we need a proper coach we need a
fielding coach a batting coach a bowling coach and the selectors must have a transparent and proper process that is not just vibes and whims of an x player or somebody with loads of money in Pakistan right it's got to be done properly they have to start identifying talent because my god is their talent in Pakistan we all know that they need to start identifying it and working out ways to get the pass way to the test match team that is not phoning up some guy doesn't have a phone who's on a mountain or he doesn't have a passport right it cannot be the way it's done so it's not the professionalism of the players out there that is the issue it's the people above them that are supposed to make the big decisions they make they're getting them all wrong yeah um it this if it if it weren't for the kid and a bit of fight from a bass with the bat this would have been an all-timeer howler of a series with no positives none whatsoever I think it already kind of is those are really you know weak straws to clutch on because we don't know what razzala will be and how
they'll ruin them because it seems like they will but rob hits the nail on the head because it's the lack of professionalism right what what Pakistan need is processes system structure trust and then you hire professions and let them do their job and don't interfere and they've done all of these things sarjit Khan and abaycha were part of the squad and will go back home with no game time right like it's it's crazy how they survived the mid series panic panic uh a sack and yet they didn't play and three of the guys of the seven magnificent seven who were drafted in only three of them played so it's all over the place and what what is means they might be uh you know uh vindicated in their minds that oh look razzala did well and we got him in their last minute that's the part that really worries me and unfortunately I don't really see a light at the end of this tunnel for Pakistan and I think there was a headline that the light at the end of the end of the tunnel is actually a train and that that might be it but look they've got shalankai New Zealand coming up at home they now have a time to rebuild and prepare for the next world test championship cycle but they don't look at
cycles it's the short term is of that kills Pakistan there is no long term plan there is no long term faith and that's why like if they had stuck with kirsten and gillespie they might have been a better team but they didn't and that that's pretty much wraps it up but anyway rob uh it's been an absolute pleasure mate it's been loads of fun I'm sorry for my snoring I'm sorry for all the annoying times I was eating and we had to record you uh bared with me throughout this last month but I had the fucking time of my life man and uh it was fun to be a roommate buddy yeah it's been a lot of fun we did well to spend that many that many hours in each other's company and not fall out and not kill each other so well done to both yeah yeah it was it was an amazing experience for myself as well to be when I was when I was younger right and I realized I had zero chance of making any money playing sport I wanted to be a sports writer and and I ended up going into gambling and all that but at the the grand old age of four c three which I know everybody out there watching will be shocked by um I literally was right I was a sports writer with an actual accreditation a real journalist
sat next to other like people that I've read their stuff for 25 years and then to be able to have lunch with them and talk to them and and um go out and play stupid computer games with them was an absolute joy and it felt like a privilege and I haven't felt like I've had um you know that kind of experience in the workplace for a very long time so it's awesome you know great summer I mean hopefully that let me go to the ashes because that's the real quiz next year you'll be going to the Sri Lanka ODI hopefully but look when this whole thing started you know you were in a very weird place I was in a very weird place I've had a challenging year as well right and to think that you know I got to do professional commentary and you got to be there in the press box and we created all this content with edgebaston at the back and it was very very surreal at times and then you know having dinner with harmy and and spending that time with like professional cricketers as well it's just been completely like out of this world and I'm just I'm happy I got to spend this time and it's been very very enjoyable month and uh maybe this is just a start buddy maybe maybe we're going to do even more big things yeah we definitely well it's awesome uh
convocs will take over the world and not just the cricking world I think the entire world of everything so that's good um and the next thing is me and Jared are off to join robby in doubling on the end of the um whatever the hell that leaves yeah I think it's like an internet term please look at the edbl yeah yeah you know we're going to go to that and we're going to hopefully um speak to to guys like steve war and uh rattle dravid and and yeah like it's it's awesome it's exciting um lots of fun coming you away everyone and until next time i'll let bayram um sing us out yeah well uh I was introduced to crumpets by rob and now i'm really sad that i might not get to eat a crumpet again we nearly we're in an uber we nearly killed a pedestrian and then you can go and read all about all about all that fun stuff in rob spaces he writes really well by the way you should check out some of rob's work but yeah man I mean it was great fun thank you all for being with us throughout all of these live streams the numbers
