Yep, Greybar does that. Josh Allen's the best quarterback in the league right now. Right. Like, I know that my home's completely healthy is insanely great. But right now, I don't think it's a debate. Josh Allen is the all around best quarterback in the NFL. He can make every throw. He can run it off schedule as a passer. He can run it as a designed runner. He can run it as an option runner. He is bigger than most of the people tackling him at times, especially if he gets to that second level. Buffalo wins in the first game ever in their new stadium. It looked really nice on TV. I didn't realize how small the stadium was. 60,000 at high mark stadium last night. I also didn't realize Max that it was a grass field until I watched last night.
They'd been begging for a grass field for a long time. Yeah. Josh Allen just unbelievable playing the game on easy mode. Buffalo's yeah, 41 to 31 win over Detroit. Detroit's got major major major issues defensively here early in the season without two of their best players in the secondary. That's for sure. Good morning football Friday show Maryland and Virginia Tech have a rather large early season game for both programs tomorrow night in college park. Steve Souter will jump on with us at 1040 to give us the Maryland side Toby Altizer who does Virginia Tech pre and post game will jump on with us at 11. So we'll do a stretch of talking and previewing Maryland Virginia Tech. Bannel join us at 12. Of course, we've got Washington beats the Cowboys if keys to a win. Smeltas picks and the rest of it on this football Friday.
Please hit what do you got for me, Max? This one really hurts Georgetown's Mike Sweetney. A Georgetown great died at the age of 43 years old yesterday. It hurts for everybody. I can just tell you that for Georgetown people Georgetown basketball fans. This one really, really hurts. One of coach Thompson's favorite players, Michael Sweetney was six nine two sixty two seventy. Great hands, unbelievable motor as a player. He kind of bridged those years between coach Thompson and then the JT three years with Craig Eschrick as the coach. They got to the sweet sixteen as freshman year. It was Maryland who they played in the sweet sixteen as Maryland went on to their first final four in 2001.
Mike Sweetney flat out is one of the most. I don't know if underrated the right word necessarily, but perhaps among the least recognized or mentioned of the all time Georgetown great players. In talking to Chris Johnson, my very good friend, the longtime program director of this station, long time producer and close family friend of the Thompson's and of coach Thompson. He's like, to be honest with you, it wouldn't be crazy if somebody put Michael Sweetney in the all time top, you know, on the all time top five starting five list for Georgetown players. But, you know, even as a rebounder, everybody's going to go Patrick first. Of course, and they'll probably go Michael Graham second, but Sweetney was a double double machine and he was a high double double machine. There was a game that he had against Carmelo Anthony, all right. And Carmelo Anthony's only year in college.
Remember Syracuse won the national title in 2003. Sweetney in that game went for 31 points, 19 rebounds, seven assists, and seven blocked shots in a game. Head to head against Carmelo Anthony. He was truly a double, double high double double player. I mean, as a sophomore, 19 and 10, 22 and 10 and a half, nearly 23 points in his junior year. Of course, he went out after his junior year was the ninth overall pick in the 2003 draft by the New York Knicks. This player for Georgetown people, they loved Mike Sweetney. And I got a chance because his wife India worked at the station for several years.
And I think for anybody that came in contact with them, you know, your heart just breaks and sympathies to India and their three boys. He was a special, special player and a very, very special person. One of the most well liked, one of the most beloved, you know, and again, during those years, you know, the Ashrich years, which were the years in between coach and then JT three, you know, they got to a sweet 16 against Maryland. Then they went to, you know, the NIT and then they bailed on an NIT bid the last year. But he was really good and didn't have as much around him as all of those great Georgetown teams under coach Thompson, or the JT three teams. He just didn't yet, Kevin Braswell. There wasn't a lot around him. He was the show. I mean, that performance against Carmelo Anthony in that year, their games against Syracuse, they had a chance in all of those games against Syracuse because it's sweet.
Really, really sad. You know, sometimes when this happens, there's nowhere near the outpouring and the discussion now on social media. If you followed it at all yesterday, late yesterday or last night, this was somebody that people just absolutely adored. The Georgetown family in particular really lost a good one yesterday. Again, heartfelt sympathies to his wife, India, their three boys, and their entire family. Very sad. All right, back to our football Friday. Look, last night, I mean, you can't, if you're playing Buffalo right now, you cannot go on an offensive possession and punt. You just can't do it. I mean, Buffalo punted last night twice in the game and it was when they had double digit leads in the game.
Last week against Houston, they punted just twice. Their third down percentage, they're staying on the field percentage is sick. They have so many options. This Joe Brady, you know, as a head coach, he was, he was the offensive coordinator, but this Joe Brady as a head coach so far through two games seems to be working. Nine for 12 last night on third down, nine for 12. When you're staying on the field nine times on third down out of 12, that's pretty impressive. Buffalo looks early season like an absolute juggernaut offensively. Now defensively not so good, but let's face it, they've also played two pretty capable offensive football teams in their first two games. I think the big takeaway after Josh Allen and Buffalo's offense last night is just how bad Detroit is defensively.
Now ironically, they had a shut out going into the third quarter against New Orleans last Sunday. And then Tyler Schuck threw for basically 300 of his 400 yards over the final quarter and a half and into overtime, which was crazy is the Saints nearly pulled off an unbelievable comeback down 21 nothing losing 31 to 30 in overtime. Like Detroit seems to be in trouble here defensively. They were, they're without, you know, safety Brian branch. They're without safety. I mean, this is where they're really struggling Kirby Joseph. So they're two starting safeties are out of them, Mattics, the veteran who they had back there earlier who was not very good, he got hurt last night, they can't cover anybody. They have won. They have two players on defense, and they're really good ones. And Aidan Hutchinson and Jack Campbell, the linebacker but other than that, it is a disaster for Detroit right now defensively.
And they're going to, you can sense that Campbell understands that and he doesn't want to do anything to take that offense off the field like they've got a score on every possession Until they get a little bit healthier defensively these are why the Joey Porter Jr. Rumors out there about Detroit being at the top of the list may be true. You know Detroit's window is an interesting one, right? Like the Lions kind of broke through in that 2023 season. You know 2022 if you recall they ended Green Bay's hopes on the final Sunday of the year at Lambo. Winning the game, finishing with a winning record, eliminating the Packers, but not making it to the playoffs. And then 2023 starts with a Thursday night opener against the defending champs at Arrowhead and they won. They win 12 games, they win two playoff games and they're right there with the 49ers at Levi's stadium in the NFC championship game.
And everybody who's thinking, well, it's only a matter of time this Detroit team. They're going to get to a Super Bowl. They have what it takes. They've got the skilled position talent. They got a quarterback. They got a great offensive coordinator Ben Johnson at the time. This Campbell guy with had taken the league by storm with all of his fourth down and all the analytics. And then they go, you know, 15 and two and lose at home to Washington in the divisional round couldn't get Washington off the field. Couldn't get their quarterback off the field. Jaden Daniels. And then last year they go nine and eight and miss the postseason. This year they're one in one with a terrible defense. Jared Goff still looks like he can do it. Certainly Jameer Gibbs and a monoraw Saint Brown and Sam Laporte and Jameson Williams. They look like offensively. They're still going to be a very good team. I mean, they're averaging 31 points a game in the first two. scored 31 and a 31 30 overtime one over the Saints and 31 last night after a slow start.
All they needed by the way, they actually got to stop down 34, 24 and it was a good punt down to about the nine yard line into Troy went three and out and I swear to God, I don't know if you guys were watching it and thinking the same thing. Because you knew that it was kind of flukeish that they had gotten Buffalo off the field. It was kind of a dropped pass that forced a punt and they're down there at their own nine 10 yard line and I'm thinking it's Campbell. He might go for it on fourth and 10 from his own nine yard line down 34 24 because if he punts it back, they're going to more likely be down three scores when he gets the ball back. He did punt it and of course Buffalo went right down the field scored. It was 41 24 and that was it 41 31 final. Buffalo was just incredible 34 first downs, 446 yards. You know, they had basically in the game. They basically had eight real drives and scored on six of them.
That's a pretty good hit rate. Josh Allen 248 yards passing three touchdowns, no picks and then had another two rushing touchdowns. He's now through two games, got five touchdowns passing and four touchdowns rushing without a turnover. He is now just the second player to go consecutive games, nine total touchdowns without a turnover. The first quarterback to do it was Josh Allen. He's the best quarterback in the game right now. Given the way most have thought about my homes in recent years, that's a heady statement and it's probably premature given my homes is ability. And if they're healthy and if they've got a running game, we'll see Andy Reed figures out a lot of ways to get it done. But if you were going to take a quarterback just for this season, I think you'd be crazy not to take Josh Allen number one.
Overall, they are 2 and 0 really good start because you look at that schedule at Houston and then Detroit at home. They go chargers next week, Patriots the following week, both home games, then they're at Rams. So three games coming up, which should be interesting for them. But yeah, Buffalo right now through two weeks, it's early. But that's when we talk about over the summer, it's really hard to predict for 25 to 28 teams somewhere between seven and 10 and 10 and seven. But then the other call it four to seven teams, usually three at the top two or three at the bottom at the top is Buffalo because you just know that as long as he's on the field, they're going to win double digit games and they're going to be in the post season. And of course, the question will be, can he finally get them to a Super Bowl? I could definitely see like, imagine the tension if they played the chiefs in the post season next in January.
Like the pressure on them to finally knock out the chiefs last year was the year in which the chiefs weren't in it. So it was the opportunity for Buffalo was the opportunity for Baltimore, but Baltimore wasn't in it and it at all. And Buffalo because of New England's great regular season had to go on the road. They want a road game against Jacksonville and then lost, of course, to Denver in a very exciting playoff game. In which Josh Allen took some criticism for the game and there were a couple of bad plays. They also would have had no chance without them in that game. All right. When we come back, keys to a win Sunday over the Cowboys. My Washington beats Dallas if and then Steve Souter will jump on after that. Kevin, she ensured the team 980 and the team 980.com. How do you go about correcting that to make sure that that doesn't happen again? What did you see on that? Yeah well I thought the like we talked to the guys the game comes down to chunk plays keeping the chunks off the tape and being successful in the fish on the weighty downs. And I thought that's where we lacked and we have to definitely improve in those situations. Having the awareness of the downer distance, discipline, rush lanes. That's going to help tremendously for us. In terms of keeping the chunks off the tape, that's just normal where the premium players are. And then playing with again great technique, finishing plays, it's going to be huge force, not assuming anything and planning to the end of the whistle. Toronto Jones yesterday in his pressur. He was excellent. Enjoyed him. Blau was on the podium as well. We played some of that I think Max at the end of yesterday's show. Yeah there was actually something that we didn't play that I'll talk about here in a moment. But let's get to my keys. Washington beats Dallas on Sunday.
If so number one, I'll start with I think they have to be really patient again on offense. You know you've got to run the football against a Vic Fangio style defense with the two high safeties. You have to be efficient in the quick passing game. You know the run extension throws. That's what the giants did. The giants ran the football. They completed short passes. They converted by getting into good down in distances on 9 of 11 on third down. You know you can't attack down the field against these teams that want to keep everything in front of them until you've made those two high safeties. Or at least one of them come down into the box because you've run the football well because you've completed short passes that have essentially been run extension plays for five six yards. You've moved the sticks. You know that's what they did. You know in the first half now they weren't efficient. They weren't as successful as you need to be against Philadelphia running the football.
And completing the short quick game stuff. But you've got to do that. And I'm going to tell you right now I think for them to do that. I think Jaden's got to be a part of the run game this week. You know and I'm not talking about designed runs. I'm talking about option runs. Jackson Dard had a couple of zone read pools that were big plays. You know you've got to make Dallas you know cover and account for everybody in the run game. I'm not sure Washington's as built to be a power run team as the Giants are right now. And they're going to use the Giants are Jackson Dard in the run game. You should use your quarterback in the run game if he's that kind of a quarterback against a team that you really have to run the ball well against to stay on the field. So I know that that really is cringe worthy for many of you. But Jaden Daniels is a lethal run threat.
He did have a couple of zone read calls in the game against Philly on Sunday. I think you're going to see more of it on Sunday against Dallas. I think the success that Dart had with it. I think Jaden is an excellent zone read quarterback. Although I have been a little bit critical sometimes of his decision making there. But you will make it easier for Croskey Merritt for K. Tron Allen for Rashad White. If Jaden is a run threat on every play. So patience on offense, which leads to, you know, meaning you've got to run the football. You've got to stick with the run. Running the football has to include the quarterback this week. And then you've got to use the the quick game from a passing standpoint to act as a run extension play. We're getting it out quickly. We're getting out and the getting it out in the flat. And then by the way, if Rashad White is going to be the Devon Singletary guy where, you know, he's a check down or he's a swing out of the backfield. He's got to make people miss.
You know, the best pass receiving running backs. Don't get tackled by the first guy. You got to make that guy miss. I thought Rashad White looked slow and slow footed last week against the Eagles. Now to be fair, the Eagles are really good. And Zach Bond was an amazing player last Sunday, as were several of the Philadelphia defensive players. Patients on offense. And that means you've got to run the ball. You've got to hit on the quick passing game. And I do think that Jaden's got to be a part of the run game. Number two, defensively number one is you've got to limit the explosives. You gave up six. And that was the difference in the game Sunday. And I thought overall we talked about it on Monday and Tuesday. It was it was it was a pleasure considering what we have watched in recent years to watch them defensively Sunday against Philadelphia.
But it wasn't perfect because you're not going to win many games when you give up six big time explosive plays, which by the way is the exact number that they gave up against the Cowboys last year in that October game in week seven. Dallas very capable of big time explosives. You have to limit the explosives on defense. And that means you've got to have your deepest be the deepest on the field. Nobody behind them. And then tackling becomes critical. You've got to tackle CD lamb on a quick hitch. You've got to tackle pickings on something over the middle. You've got to tackle Javante Williams. If there's, you know, a decent sized hole where he's into that second level. You've got to make it a six or a seven yard run. Not a 16 to 17 yard run. Got to stop the run. That's number three. I went with explosives first because that's what killed him last week. But stopping the run is just as important. And Javante Williams is a really good back. I was always a big fan of Javante Williams. He just never stayed healthy.
And he had a big year last year and he was healthy. And he is a good back, a good vision back. He's got underrated quicks and speed. And he can run over you. I think defensively you've got to get like you did last week several negative plays. So another 10 TFL tackles for lost day would be huge. You know, negative plays created by the defense to get Dallas into bad down and distant situations where you then can really unleash what you think is a much improved pass rush, which will include the return of Dorne's Armstrong. On Sunday to get into that situation, you know, a negative play, a big time negative play say every other series or at least two out of three series would be huge. Now Philadelphia overcame that they had a third and 17 touchdown pass in the red zone. That's really inexcusable. What happened on that play? You cannot allow that to happen.
That has to be the play that Dorne T Jones is kicking himself more than anything else. There's no reason to show aggressiveness pre snap on third and gold the 17. You don't need seven guys up at the line of scrimmage. You need seven to eight guys at the goal line, making sure that everything has to be thrown underneath. The Fells negative plays created by the defense will be huge. You've got a pressure, Dak Prescott and you've got a hit Dak Prescott. This has to be a game where you are the more physical team that you're the team taking it to them defensively. It has to be a big hitting game. You've got to hit Dak over and over again. It's not something that we've seen our team do a lot of in recent years, but they have, I think, the potential to be that kind of a team this year. So defensively limit the explosives. Obviously you cannot get gashed in the run game.
And the TFL is the negative plays. If that becomes a hallmark of this team, it's just going to be so much more fun to watch a be so much more successful than it's been. You know, the worst result for an offense to start a drive is a sack or a negative run and a tackle for loss. It's worse than a penalty because the penalty doesn't cost you the down. The sack does the three or four yard loss on a running back on a swing pass out of the backfield on first down that down counts. Second and 14 is much more difficult to overcome than first and 15 or first and 20. Takeaways, zero turnovers in the game last week almost had one with Bill Croskey, Marit, great job by Josh Connerley, Jr. The giants fumbled four times against the cowboys and the cowboys did a good job in forcing four fumbles.
They only lost one of them. I mean, if they lose one more, that game's coming down to the final drive. And if they lose two of those other three, they lose the game. So the cowboys had the ball on the ground four times in that game. And our defense was obviously not a team that took the ball away from anybody last year. Second worst in the league with 10 total only the jets had fewer and the year before that tied for 26th in the league in takeaways. This seems to be a defense that intends on creating takeaways. You know, the Brian Flores defense last week in the Minnesota Green Bay game. The game really turned or got away from the packers because that Brian Flores defense has created takeaways. Jordan love had a pick in the fourth quarter and Jordan love had a fumble in the fourth quarter.
You got to start getting some takeaways. You've got to make it a little bit easier on the team and on the offense. This has been an offense for two straight years. If we want to go back further, even more than that, but in the Dan Quinn era in two consecutive years that is operated essentially without any easy, easy field position opportunities because of takeaways. You've got to get some, you know, and this would be the week to get them. Now do I think they have to be at plus one or plus two to win the game. I don't, I don't, you know, seven punts on 11 drives like Philadelphia had would be a really good result. You know, and holding teams to field goals in the red zone red zone efficiency huge, but man, it would be nice if we're seven punts out of 11 drives and then to takeaways on two other drives.
Another key, you can't give up points in the kicking game. A Miss PAT and a Missed Field goal blocked PAT by Jalen Carter and a Missed Field goal last week were really big place. Clearly big place. You know, that's four points off the board, not to mention on the Missed 54 yard field goal. That's the kind of field position you don't want to give the other team. So they can't give up those kinds of scoring opportunities, one of which leads to poor field position for your defense when they get back out of the field and expect to win games that, you know, going in look like they could be close games. I mean, Dallas is a three and a half four point favorite. And then lastly, Jaden may have to put on the Superman Cape on Sunday. I don't want him to do it to the point where he's pressing and he's forcing. I thought that that was a big part of what kept them in the game last week is that they didn't force. They were patient. They actually said, you know what a throw away and a punt is better than a force.
They just throw that gets picked and now we're not even in the game. They were in the game. There was no reason to really force it at any point. But on Sunday, you got to stay on the field because the offense that is coming back out onto the field for your opponent is more lethal than the one you just faced. Jaden's got to do what the offense needs him to do to stay on the field and keep DAC and CD lamb and pickings and Javante Williams on the sideline. So a third and five, you got to go get it if nobody's open. You've got you have to go zone reads, you got to read it. And then you got to make them pay for having a D N not play the quarterback. I think we're going to see a significant increase in zone read looks for sure because they've got to run the football. That means shotgun. It means more shotgun than under center.
Now against this defensive front might we see more under center play action under center bootleg versus what you have against Philly, which is a fear that they're just so good that you're not going to get that opportunity and you don't want to turn your back to the defense. We'll see. But I would not be surprised if there are four or five read calls doesn't mean Jaden's going to keep it and run it. He may hand it off every single time to bill or to K Tron or to Rashad white. So patience on offense got to run the football. Jaden's got to be a part of the run game Sunday short passes quick game got to stay on the field defensively have to limit the explosives, which means you got to tackle well. I mean we've not tackled well against Dallas. You got to stop the run Javante Williams is legit. You got to create negative plays those TFLs were huge against the Eagles on Sunday. You got a pressure deck and you got to hit him. He's got to know that he's in a physical football game where he's going to be bruised and battered in this one.
It would be great to get a couple of takeaways. You can't give up points in the kicking game. No, you can't have a blocked PAT. You can't have a missed field goal. And Jaden may have to put on the Superman Cape in this one a few times to ensure that the team stays on the field offensively. So we're some weeks. Did you watch we're going to get to Maryland Virginia Tech. Did you watch? Schens Eagles on Sunday or not? Not much. I was in and out. I was enjoying crabs and and some beer and a crab feast on my way home. I didn't get to get sick all the day now. Okay. All right. Did you have any in the in and out of watching it any any takeaways from it or not? I was I was excited to see Williams's production every see her. I think you and I talked about about pre draft and I was pretty high on him after they selected. So I was curious to see how it's first game when I think he played exactly how I thought he was going to play after watching him in college. He's just going to be a real good player in that slide area. 20 yards and under type routes. He's going to be a problem. I think he's got a real bright future. So that was that was my takeaway of it. Let's talk about Maryland Virginia Tech. What have we learned if anything about the Terps through the first two games?
Yeah. That's a hard question. Answer when you play the two opponent that they had and Virginia Tech kind of a mirror of that from a schedule standpoint. You can say they both had a scrimmage. They just we go on and then tune up game week two. So the Terps are what I thought they were coming in and that's not a real defined answer because I'm still not settled with the offensive side of the football. I'm not sure if they've improved the running game from last year, which was not good at all. So I'm hoping to see that that continues to improve. But through the two games that we watched, I can't say that I definitely can can can vouch for it improving. I'm just hoping to see that. I was shocked to see Malik watched him as rusty as he was week one, but he really cleared that up in week two. He was awesome in week two and very accurate and look like he correct most of those. Your blood and much that got a lot of them week one. It's a he looks really good. The receiver core. I'm probably the highest I've been on since I started calling the games.
Really? Yeah, the two transfers, gladding and dirt. These two dudes can play from what I see. Those guys make place. There was probably five or six passes last week in the UConn game that would have been dropped last year and the year before that. So maybe next to time tell me these two dudes are really open in my eyes. I mean, it's only the two games I get it, but just watching them running around and watching the way to catch the football. And they're willing to want to do more with the football in their hands. He just tell them two different guys. So I'm really excited about those. So you need Caleb Web to come along and a bad week one. He's also in the emergency room, but he rectified that week two and made some plays when it came his way. I don't know if he's going to be as dynamic as the other two, but that's three receivers that it should be very productive form. So I'm pretty excited about that park. Will DeWan Williams play this week? Yeah, I'm not sure. They've been pretty good at keeping that injury update.
I mean, I, I made it to some similar. I found it was a lower leg injury that I was assuming to be out a couple weeks, but I don't have any concrete detail and that I'm hoping he shows up this weekend can play because they need him. He's got a lot of production and he was probably our most productive player on offense last year. So it's going to be a tough blow if he can't go in this game. And then you're just going to need iris in Howard to step up and and he's done a good job. I think he looks like a capable runner. He ran far. Lastly gets you cons. So if it does go that way, we're just the one I can't play. He showed some good things the first two weeks. I don't think I mentioned this to you after the opener. It's Hampton. So I don't know what you learn from it. But he looked to do on Williams is Maryland starting running back number one running back. And he missed last week for this lower leg injury. Who knows if he'll go tomorrow night, but he looked faster to me. It could have been the competition. He sure did.
But he looked faster now. So he did. He was well. Yeah, he did. Well, I mean, that one run. I would have, I mean, before the season started. And I would have said there's he's not a guy that can go 94. No matter who you fight it. Let's just happen to perfectly where everybody's in the box and you don't have to do much, but still you would have thought a quarterback or somebody would be able to walk them down. Now that he looked good going down that sideline much faster than I thought he was. And I think it just goes back to his. I think this is the second year. I think he towards AC all as a senior in high school. So he's only two years or more from that. And that I think is the natural progression of just getting fully back to what you were. So he looked good. Yeah, it's a big blow. If you can't continue to play. I'm not sure how long, but he looked good. So he only comes back and adds that type of speed and dynamic ability. Because he's a really he's a five tool back. I mean, he's not. Well, I mean, I could take that back. I would say he's on a home run hitter, but he ran for 94 yards at one point, but he's kind of like a B B plus in all the areas. If I was grazing them as a back. And you need that in the back field. So hopefully you can get healthy.
So. All right. How many of the Malik Washington throws were, you know, quick throws, you know, even even check downs or swings, which by the way, I think that he looked like he threw with more touch against you, con. Then he did against tower. You and I talked about that. That was my biggest concern. He just throws every pass 100 miles per hour. And there wasn't a lot of touch, but did you see more of that against you, con? Are you encouraged by, you know, the growth from sort of a throwing the football accuracy touch, etc. Standpoint. From you, con. Yes, I started. I was discouraged after hand, and for sure he was not. He was making good mental decisions, but his physical decisions and how he was throwing the ball with mechanics weren't good. He was inaccurate that week. What, so I was a little discouraged there because I was hoping like you just mentioned you and I talked with you about it. I was hoping all the offseason that he was really going to go back to the roots and fundamentals of just quarterback and footwork and arm placement and those types of things just to iron those kinks out because it looks like he's got all the tools and the mental capabilities.
You don't let your arm and bad habits let you down, right? So this hurts week one, but then he really just came alive there. We too, you con. Now as far as touch balls go, maybe one or two there, he had a over Chris Durran, an overall where he called with one hand and they had to throw some touch on that ball. That was the best ball of the day from him from a touch standpoint. And it had to be pinpoint accurate and it wasn't had to go over a linebacker and it did it had to drop in behind the safety. And so he has the ability, but I agree there's still some there that we need to see he had a chance to hit web on a deep ball who is behind the defense and the overthrow. So you and I know it's a deep ball, but you still have touch on the deep ball too. So you're I think you still learn it and you always had he has a new crop of receivers that I just you're able to about these guys, but you got to take time to work on it. I'm hoping to continue to see improvements going to me. This is obviously not have to break any news here, but this is just a big step up in competition from the prior two weeks. So they got to they got to be playing well.
We're talking to Steve Souter. He'll be on the call tomorrow night with Johnny holiday in college park. The game is sold out and we'll see what the crowd breakdown is. There will be a lot of Virginia Tech in the crowd. No doubt. There used to be when they played Maryland as an ACC member. So I am most people don't know this, but Maryland recruited one of the top two to three recruits in the country. All right, from this 26 class, a defensive player by the name of Zion a la 64 240 out of Baltimore. He's played these first two games. Tell me what you've seen with him is a true freshman and one of the highest recruits, maybe the highest recruit Maryland's ever had. I'm hard to say that I've seen and make too much of an impact really. Other than I mean, he got on the board with his strip sack at UCL. So that was good to, you know, check that box to make an impact, but I just haven't seen him.
I look at this book as well. He doesn't have the splash so far that the higher math is and city Stewart did as freshmen. So wait to see that the higher math is such a big blow for the Terps to not be able to play all season. I mean, we've really like losing two players in my in my eyes because I was really looked forward to seeing math at Stewart and I and a three way rotation where if anybody got tired, the next guy came to it comes in and it's not really a drop off. And I really saw that last week, Sydney Stewart, the first two drivers, you kind of just had that adrenaline dump. You could just see if he was gasped out there, but they're really wasn't anybody to come in to relieve him until I came in the third series. But I think he's got to get a see wet and he is. He has a good pass on the strip sack and that's in space to get off the ball, be able to dip and rip and come under and get skinny and then have the wherewithal to go for the ball. So it's there one game. I can't say he's made too much of an impact yet. So I'm still waiting to see. Can you say, I mean, again, I don't just hasn't had this blast. That's like your head in my eyes.
By the way, Zahir Mathis and Sydney Stewart were two freshman D N's last year for Maryland and they were phenomenal as freshman Mathis torn ACL done for the year. Sit, but both of them are Sunday football players. No doubt in your mind, right? Yeah, I would, I would have put Zahir Mathis, maybe the second best player on the team. I thought coming in, I think you that good had that type of talent. So that was just a big blow, but yeah, I would certainly as long as he comes off this injury well, when he re rehabilitates, he's going to be playing on Sunday for sure. All right, before we get to the matchup against tech tomorrow night, tell me in these first two games or maybe practices or whatever, is there a player or two that you're really excited about that nobody really was talking about among Maryland fans? That nobody was talking about kind of difficult defense. I really like Messiah the Lone, the young safety. He was a freshman last year and he made some good plays, but he had been playing all the time and making play on special teams as well.
So I was really looking forward to him coming into the season to see if he was going to be able to just be the safety that I thought he wasn't through two games. You know, he's not feeling up the statue, but he did have the two picks and we kind of cherry on excuse me, presents just given to them, but he's still going to be in the right place at the right time. So he's one and then let's see here. Let me see if I can give you one offensively. Well, no, you know what? Cause they surprised me. I did not watch much film on Christopher or gladding from the portal before they showed up. I don't like doing that a lot. I just want to see how they show up or what they look like when I see him in person. So they've surprised me. I've already read about them, but those two, Christopher and they call him AR gladding. They're really good players to watch from a serious standpoint. Yeah, they got dirt from Wyoming of all places and they got gladding. Yeah, you know, you only have four touchdowns last year and this is mind blowing because he's he's a stud.
Yeah, they're gladding from ODU. All right, size up the match up tomorrow night. What what does Maryland have to do to win the game? They're three point underdogs. Yeah, it couldn't be tough. It's going to be a tough game and you hope it's one of those great games where the environment and the game live up to it. You hope that's not one of those excuse me situations where Maryland doesn't step up to the plate. I know we've you know, I've been disappointed in the past when the build up to a big game happens. And then sometimes they can come out lay an egg so you don't want to see that. You want to see him just play very good football discipline football don't turn the ball over, but it's going to be tough. They got their front seven is really disrupted Virginia tech. I think Cortez Harris is probably their best patch washer and this is going to tough test for the Maryland offensive line. Obviously, this early in the season. So they're going to have to be able to be stout upfront and give me Washington some time. And then offensively they got a playmaker at tight end Luke Reynolds came over from Penn State. He seems to be one of their best playmakers offensively followed by Cushion Brown number three. He'll be making plays as well offensive line.
I know they've given up four sacks in the first two games. So maybe there's an opportunity for Maryland defense to play some pressure and get the Grop and Meyer. Grop and Meyer looks pretty good so far accurate. You that 70 almost 78% completion for touchdown. Those picks. I'll be going supposed to do the first two games not making mistakes. They got two backs that'll probably share carries with Hawkins and over 10. So the defense is going to cut out for them and off it's going to cut out but now what is with with interesting is so Maryland is probably to come down to red zone defense in my opinion for for the Terps. They haven't let anybody in the red zone yet there for the first two weeks now they've been scored off because you kind of had two big plays on it, but they haven't had to bow up in the red zone. And I think that's what's going to come down to is Virginia. It's going to move the football. But can you just make them spotter in the red zone kick field versus touchdowns is probably going to be what sets the game part. Yeah. They they've had these spots before now couple of those were Friday night games remember the Penn State thing and the Iowa thing.
Yeah, those those were painful. But I don't view this opponent in the same way. It was a mismatch that year in 2019 against Penn State. It was a mismatch against Iowa. You don't see it the same way in terms of the the rosters right these this this match up. They're pretty close. Yeah, no, I will I think they're pretty similar. Yes, I would agree maybe mirror images closely on each other at this point this season will see what have what shakes out down the road. But yeah, that's why it would be even more disappointing right if the Terps don't show up because they they should be going back to neck. I'm going to tell the tell with Virginia Tech here. It's just you know I've been up for I've been up for it since Franklin went over there and you see them the schedule. And you just don't want these regional teams to come in and and take a win from your home stadium. So I'm pumped up and you just want the team to match the energy that I know the crowd will be and it's and it's where they just like it's such a pillow game for momentum for the rest of the season.
I don't want the air amount of the balloons so quickly right week three if they don't get this win. Then who knows what it does to attendants and who knows what it does to morale of the fan base because melon. I mean the fan base has been pretty fickle over the last couple of years were you know, they need to correct that how you come from winning and that's your way to correct so business. Yeah, and look they've got a win a book next week at home against UCLA who's not really that good. So if they could get this one next week, you get a decent crowd. And then you know, you don't have to worry about anything totally out of your reach until Ohio State in week six or seven or whatever that is. All right, let's get them hopefully go Terps. Appreciate it as always. All right, Steve Souter everybody go look up his highlight reel from college. I mean you talk about a four three dude that could fly and just still still holds some all time NCAA and ACC punt return records.

He's also the pre- and post-game host on Virginia Tech Football. We talked to Steve Souter who will be on the call tomorrow night with Johnny Holiday in College Park. Toby's got the Virginia Tech perspective.
So, by the way, at Toby underscore Altizer, ALT-I-Z-E-R. By the way, Toby also does the Nats Post Game on 1067 The Fan. And they played better as of late. What do you see tomorrow night? How good is Virginia Tech if you learned anything from the first two games? I mean, if I learn anything Kevin, this team is different than what we've seen the last couple of years with Tech. I mean, beating VMI, that's fine and bandy. It's an FCS team that is with all due respect to VMI, one of the worst football teams I've ever seen. But Old Dominion has given this team a run for its money the last couple of years and blew them out last year. So to be able to reciprocate that in week two, even though Old Dominion shouldn't be on the same tier as Virginia Tech, when you've struggled with them the last couple of years and then you're able to handle your business early against them and kind of put that game away before half time, it shows a different mindset. I think that's the biggest thing I've learned from just two games, Kevin, is this team handles their business in the first half.
There are still a bunch of things that James Franklin, honestly, I bet you, he asked Coach Franklin, he would probably be thrilled exactly how things have gone where there are, they've handled their business in the first two games and won pretty easily. At the same point, there are a lot of coaching points, penalties, second half, maybe lack of awareness or loss of concentration against Old Dominion, they outscored them in the second half. So I bet you there's a lot of coaching points that he feels like he can still ride the guys pretty hard going into this game against the Terps, because if they come out and they play like they did in the first half against Old Dominion, they probably feel pretty good going against Maryland, but if they play like they did in the second half, Maryland will feel pretty good being able to come back and win the game in that. So I think there's a lot of good things that the Hokies have done, but also some improvements still that they need to have and plan a better team in Maryland, I think we'll get to see if that actually comes to fruition. Toby, speak to the, maybe I'm going to describe it inaccurately, but the decreased level of passion for Virginia Tech football during the post-Frank Beamry years, the Justin Fonte years, the Brent pry years,
not that they were terrible all those years, but the Virginia Tech brand, which was really big and Blacksburg on a Thursday night, Blacksburg at night in general any night for a game. It just seems like in recent years, it's become less of a thing. How would you describe the last 10 or so years and has it been reignited with James Franklin as the coach? I'll just speak on this personally, Kevin and then give you a little bit of thought perspective, why I grew up a fan of the Hokies. So right around the time, you know, when, when you're a kid and you're a diehard and then right when you start to get to that age, wherever it may be, 10, 12 years old and where you either become a diehard or maybe you lose a little bit of that childhood passion, that's when the Hokies kind of lost that arc for me. Like they just, they weren't as good like watching Tyrod Taylor growing up and watching those teams under beamer.
They were so much fun and then like you said, they kind of went through a low and then the one day years didn't go as well as you'd like and obviously the Brent bride didn't go as well and there've been little bits and pieces where that spark tried to get going again, but you know, I think of a couple of seasons ago, the Hokies went six and six and they returned, I think 21 starters and an arrow when that doesn't happen. And so going into the season, Hokies fans are really excited for another season under Brent, pry, you sang all the right things and you're excited to see where they can go and they lose in their opener to Vanderbilt. Now it turned out that Vanderbilt was pretty solid that season, but those sorts of things they just haven't been able to capture those sorts of things. So I think we're going to go to the next one, which is the first real test for the Hokies going up against the Terps, but I think being able to have the excitement that Franklin is brought the talent level on this team is just so much higher than it's been in years.
And saying all the things that he does and I know he's a polarizing figure. I do think it's been reinvigorated seeing Lane Stadium. I haven't been there the first two games, but just seeing pictures and videos of what the atmosphere is like. It's been a little bit more rock. It's always going to be a fun environment, but it does feel like that passion is starting to get brought back. I know for me obviously working on the broadcast. I'm starting to the field those emotions. I did when I was a kid again. I think for a lot of people, they feel like this team is going similar. I don't know if they're going to win the ACC this year, but it feels like they're going in the right direction. I think a lot of people are excited to see where it goes. Yeah, I think it's better for the sport. It's certainly better for this region. I mean, I don't personally consider Virginia Tech a DC team, but there are so many Virginia Tech alums in our area that it is important to a lot of people listening. So just tell me real quickly what Maryland should be concerned about the most.
Yeah, I think the big thing is Virginia Tech skill position players are off and they've got some guys that can. Luke Reynolds tied in. He came over from Penn State. I think he's a NFL caliber tight end. I don't know that he's a first round draft pick necessarily, but he could get into the conversation of being maybe a day to pick probably an early day three pick at this point, but he's going to be a big part of their game plan. He's brought over a transfer from Duke as well. Quasha on Brown at wide receiver. He's pretty explosive. He had a punt return, return down to the one yard line against old dominion. So you obviously get some of that explosive this there and getting him involved in the passing game. And then the running backs, Marcellus Hawkins and Jeff over 10 give you almost like the junior give David Montgomery type of. Yen and Yang type of run game there where Marcellus Hawkins is going to give you more of the power aspect. He's more veteran, but he had a pretty good game last week.
Over 10 didn't have as much of a chance to get go in last week, but he's more explosive is first touch of the year against the am I was a 50 or touchdown run. So being able to have a little bit of both of those guys, I would say that. And then defensively, both of these teams are similar in that they're able to get pressure on the quarterback. The Hokies lead the country in sex. I think Maryland's just behind them with like two fewer. So I think they're going to be able to get after him and again, the caliber of teams aren't right, but the Hokies have also shown a little beamer ball. I mentioned Quachon Brown, return one down to the one yard line in the second game in the year against old dominion against VMI against VMI, but they blocked two punts. So I think the Hokie special teams has been on point as well. Yeah, I was going to ask you like, beamer ball was back in that opener against VMI with two blocked punts in the game. So who do you like and why? Yeah, I like the Hokies. Obviously, and I think it should be a pretty close game. And I think this one's fun, Kevin, because even just listening to some in a podcast and people that are a little more entrenched than everything going on, and even I am.
The way that it's described is like it's almost the same type of team. You know, you flipped it around and you had the turf throw on maroon and orange this week. It wouldn't be all that crazy. The team would look pretty similar just in terms of the way that they're going to play and the athletes that they have. So I think this one comes down to coaching and I'm going to get Franklin the edge on that one. And I think it'll be a close game though. I think the Hokies win by a touchdown. Let's say 28, 21, something like that. I think it's going to be a fun game. And I think, you know, from the Hokies perspective for me, it's just can you stop the pass rush? Can you give your quarterback a chance and bronch buyer? And then can you make sure that Malik Washington doesn't go crazy? I mean, for the most part, the Hokies played it pretty coy. And then their corner, Jacque was white was talking a little bit of trash about Malik Washington.
You know, I wonder if he's not a little extra motivated here in some of those comments. So I think it's going to be a really fun atmosphere in college park, luckily going to be at the game. So I'm excited to see what can happen, but I'll take the Hokies by touchdown. What time are you on the air tomorrow? We'll pregame at 530 and kick off at 730. Pregame 530 kickoff 730. Toby will be a part of that on 1067, the fan. Thanks. I really appreciate it. Yeah, I appreciate it, Kevin. Toby Altizer, everybody. I, I like Maryland tomorrow night. I mean, part of it is there is a lot more action on Virginia Tech tomorrow night. I don't think anybody truly believes in Maryland at this point. They haven't beaten anybody. Virginia Tech hasn't beaten anybody either. I mean, I'll let you know when I get to the smell test whether or not it is enough of sort of a public lean to give out Maryland.
But the Virginia Tech tends to be as you look at this more of a public favorite in this game than Maryland. And the lines really more two and a half than threes. I think Maryland at home, I think they can really move the football and they can really get after the past. This is one of those games with Mike Loxley and Terp fans will understand this. They just have to limit the mistakes. Like you can't end up in a game in which you've got 11 penalties for 115 yards of lost yardage. You can't, you know, jump off sides on a field goal attempt that's good. And then you're pushed five yards back and end up missing the second one. These are the kinds of things that have plagued Mike Loxley teams now for years. The mistakes, the penalties, the really unforced errors over and over again. The lack of discipline kind of errors and a game that I think most people expect to be close.
Those are the things that decide it. And then the other thing here is you've got a in college football, even more so in the NFL. You've got a limit explosives and you've got to generate explosives because it is harder to go 12, 13, 14 plays. You need a couple of those five play drives where you end up with a 50 yard play or a 35 yard play. But really for Maryland and they've been in these spots a few times. You know, they annihilated Virginia Tech in the pinstripe bowl in Yankee Stadium a few years ago. That was the two at Tonga Veloah era with him at quarterback. They beat Virginia Tech 54 to 10 in a bowl game. Not that these teams, especially Virginia Tech, new coaching staff obviously. This was a Brent pry team for Virginia Tech. But it was, it was sweet to watch as a Maryland fan to see Maryland destroy tech in that bowl game.
I'm sure tech fans would love to see a big win. There isn't a lot of respect for Maryland football from Virginia Tech football fans because they've had great success over the years at times, much more so with Frank Beamer of course. It's been a long time where Maryland's been, you know, any kind of, you know, close proximity, in close proximity to the national spotlight. They've got talent. Maryland's always got some talent. They've always got, you know, a half dozen minimum players that are going to get a shot to play in the NFL. And they've got speed again this year at wide receiver. Is Souter pointed out they've got a quarterback that everybody believes in in Malik Washington. My big concern with Malik Washington is not size. He's 65 to 30, not mobility. He's very mobile, not the ability to make every throw. He can make every throw. But as a young player last year, the lay ups, the easy, you know, throws.
Were the most difficult for him, you know, a guy in the flat, a running back, he'd throw a hundred mile per hour fastball that just couldn't get caught. Or he'd miss in the dirt to somebody right over the middle close or throw high. He is very, very dangerous as an all around athlete at a quarterback spot. But he can really throw it. Clint Trickett is their new offensive coordinator. And there seems to be a lot to like about him. They're playmakers. Malik Washington just has to be a distributor and get the ball to some of those playmakers. Let him make plays. But man, every Maryland big spot over the lockslee era, when they've been in it and they've been in the game. And there have been moments where they've never been in the game. The Penn State game in 2019 was a fired up Friday night crowd like you wouldn't have believed. And it was 28 nothing at the end of the first quarter. They played Iowa and another one of those Friday night games. It was a massive spot.
They were, they got their ass kicked. It was just a one sided talent beat down as much as it was anything else. But when they've been in some of these bigger games for them, usually earlier in the season, because they haven't had a lot of late season important games. But it comes down to mistakes. And the Terps have usually been on the wrong side of that. You know, penalties, turnovers, discipline penalties. You know, a 15 yarder that just is absurd after a three and out stop. You can't have that and expect to win games that are going to be close going in. I'm really intrigued to see what the Terps are because if somehow they can be on the right side of those mistakes, I think they do have enough firepower to move the football and score some points. And a win would really be a big shot in the arm for Maryland football right now. It's really all of us that are big Terp fans have sort of pointed to this game as the absolute.
You know, it's the game that's either going to decide a competitive potential bowl season or better. Or, you know, look out, it's going to be another three or four win team. And that would be it at that point for Loxley. I don't think there's any doubt about it. But he can recruit. He can motivate. There's a lot to like about what he does. And he's got some guys that can make some plays. And I think he made a good move with the offensive coordinator and Clint Trickett. We'll see what happens tomorrow night. All right. Back to the NFL next. I do want you to know that window nation is offering four free windows with every four purchased right now. That is a great deal. Open one, fix. Goes the screen, has it batted away and picked off in the air by Darryl Grant touchdown, RISGIN. Remember those days? January 22nd, 1983. Dexter, Darryl Grant. The second, in my opinion, most iconic play in franchise history after, of course, John Riggins. Fourth and one Super Bowl run that came the following week. Actually, wasn't two weeks later. That strike short and season, they just had one week between the championship game and the Super Bowl in Pasadena. The rivalry for those of you not old enough to remember or not from here. It wasn't just the best rivalry in the NFL. It was a top five rivalry in all of sports, North American sports.
Anyway, that's what Cowboys versus Redskins was in the 70s, in the 80s, in the 90s. I'd say even into the 2000s. I think that after the Snyder reign of terror really took hold and we realized just how downtrodden the franchise was. And people started to disappear from the fan base in the 2010s. And really the later 2010s for sure really accelerated. But Dallas, Washington was still into the 2000s. A big, big football game. 2012, they played a game against each other in the season finale. The final game of the regular season, Sunday night football. Final week for the division, the RG3. That was the Alfred Morris game when he rushed for 200 yards. In 2016, Dallas was 9 and 1. Washington was 6-3 and 1 and they played on Thanksgiving Day.
And it was electric. And that game in the moment was the most watched regular season game in NFL history on Fox. So it was still a deal in 2016. But here we are 10 years later. And these two teams just haven't played enough in meaningful spots over the years. The Cowboys haven't won enough in the postseason. They are the last, are they're the team that is most distant between today and their last NFC championship game. The parents, which was after the 95 season. Washington was second most up until two years ago when they ended up in the championship game against the Eagles. These two teams, for whatever reason, even though they've had some moments, and Dallas has had more moments. And I'm talking about regular season moments because their moments have not been in the postseason.
They've been a choking dog franchise in the postseason for basically 30 years now. So, but even when they've had moments in Washington's had fewer moments, but an occasional moment, you know, winning the division in 2012 against Dallas, they did play. The 2016 season, they were both good at the same time. But too many times, they aren't good at the same time. One team's terrible and the other is just okay. Or maybe the other is in the midst of a decent regular season. It's hard to really sustain a legitimate rivalry, even against a division team, if more times than not, the matchup isn't a meaningful one. And man, they have played a lot of end of season games in recent years that have been totally meaningless. You know, the Cowboys have won eight out of the last 10 against Washington. And the two games of Washington won were both end of season meaningless games.
You know, the Sam Hall game, remember in 2022. And then the game a few years ago that Marcus Mario to throw a touchdown pass to Terry McCorn on the final play of the game. I mean, Washington is not one a meaningful game against Dallas. Or you know, a game that was meaningful to the standings at a point in the season where they were both alive. Since they pummeled Dallas on Thanksgiving day back in the COVID year, 41 to 16. And Tony O'Gibson, I believe, had a big day. The question at 301230980 is simple. It is, do you still consider Washington Dallas to be a top tier or a marquee NFL rivalry? We can all admit that pretty much any matchup between division teams, you know, that have been together for decades upon decades.
You can call it a rivalry. I'm not saying that I'm not calling Washington Dallas a rivalry. It's to the extent of the, you know, where you would put the rivalry on the list of rivalries in the NFL. Is it a top tier? Is it a marquee rivalry still? 301230980. I mean, you can go division by division in the NFL. Atlanta, New Orleans is a rivalry. Now, in the NFL for NFL fans, it's not a marquee rivalry. But for that division and for those fan bases, that is a rivalry. You know, Cleveland, Pittsburgh is pretty intense. Pittsburgh Cincinnati. Pretty intense, but it's not a marquee top tier NFL rivalry. I would put honestly right now, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, number one on the list. And then I don't know what comes next because of all the change, all the turnover, roster wise,
the up and down nature of franchises in today's NFL, it's hard to identify what would be next. Chicago, Green Bay, Denver, Kansas City. It's not certainly Seattle and the Rams in the very current, but that's not a marquee NFL rivalry. San Francisco Seattle was there for a while and San Francisco Rams at times. But I don't even know what number two after Pittsburgh, Baltimore would be. Really? It's not an easy answer. Pittsburgh, Baltimore in terms of the last 20 years has been the NFL's best rivalry in my opinion. You know, even in a year like last year, where neither team was great, right? But they played a season ending game for the division, season ending. And the kicker for Baltimore missed a makeable feel goal on the final play of the game, final play of the regular season.
Pittsburgh won the division. Baltimore went home. 301-230-0980. You know, I feel like there are a lot of factors. Number one, what I've talked about, not enough meaningful football against each other for a long period of time. Number two is this organization in particular got worn down and really in many ways evaporated during the Snyder years. Number three, Philadelphia has been really, really good over a long period of time. And they have played so many more meaningful games against the Cowboys that for Cowboys fans, the Eagles are their number one rival. It's really not even a conversation anymore. Number four is, look, this goes back to the name change and the branding, etc. That laid a bit of a gut punch to not only the franchise and the passion that people had for the franchise, but the things that were tangential to it, the rivalries.
You know, when you tune in Sunday and for many of us and you hear Cowboys commanders, you throw up in your mouth when you hear that. At least the uniforms will look like they have over the years up until the last few years. Excited about that. You know, they wore those uniforms and made the Cowboys wear their blues on Thanksgiving Day last year. It actually looked like a Cowboys Redskins game, a Washington Dallas game. But really at the core of it is, when one team's been the worst team in the division over a long period of time. And the other team hasn't been great either, but has had many more successful regular seasons. And many more big matchups against another team in the division. It loses its luster. And as of today, my answer would be no. Washington Dallas is no longer in the moment. A marquee top tier NFL rivalry.
The rest of the country will watch the game because it's in a highlighted spot. You know, Dallas isn't a lot of highlights highlighted spots. They are the biggest draw in the sport still or certainly one of them. Washington is not. Now it could become that way again. It was great to play Philadelphia three times in 2024. It would be great to play two incredibly meaningful games against the Cowboys this year. That would be fun. I used to root for Washington and Dallas to be good at the same time, just so that the Washington Dallas games would have the meaning that they used to have. They finish with Dallas at home this year, you know, in mid January. It's possible just like many of the games against Dallas late in the season in recent years that it'll be meaningless. We'll see. 301230980301230980 is Washington currently versus Dallas a top tier marquee NFL rivalry.
All of our NFL coverage on the team 980 is presented by Xfinity scored the most reliable Wi-Fi one price five years guaranteed Xfinity. Imagine that I'll take your calls next. It will be a 28 yard game and a 35 yard attempt by VanderJent who has 11 career game winning field goals. If you're just joining us, here's the game tied in 19, six seconds to go. VanderJent has a blocked. Hipped up by Taylor. Penalty flag on the plane. Taylor's still going. Trayvinscent blocked it. There's a flag down, but it came after the block.
Even when Washington wasn't in the midst of a good season, there were memorable games. That 2006 game was truly one of the most memorable games of the 2000s between the two teams. Washington was not good in 2006. That was one of Tony Romo's first starts for the Cowboys. Trayvinscent's block field goal, Sean picked it up, ran around, had the return, the 15 yard face mask, and Nick Novak booted the game winner for a 22 to 19 win. Stunner that particular day. They've had some wild games over the years, even when one of the teams wasn't good or both of them weren't good. The question though is, do you still consider Washington Dallas to be a marquee NFL rivalry? It is also our Waldorf Honda X-Poll of the day.
I just retweeted it. You can vote for it when you get there. But Waldorf Honda is for us, our sponsor for our Twitter poll of the day. It all starts with a click, Waldorf Honda.com. Toby, do you consider? I do not consider it to be a top tier NFL rivalry anymore. There aren't a lot of them. Pittsburgh Baltimore to me is the one that's obvious. After that, nothing's truly obvious. But what do you say about Washington Dallas? Who's Toby? I mean, I'm sorry. Max. I had Toby on my mind because I was just... It's understandable. Somebody just texted me about Toby. Actually, a friend of mine texted me to say the guy that was talking about Virginia Tech was really good. And I said, yeah, Toby's excellent. Tap into the fan. You're more tobes. Yeah. It's not that my number one rivalry in the NFC East anymore. Now, I've maintained over the years that the Eagles have kind of taken that place in my heart that's full of hatred.
Now, I'm always going to get up for Dallas week. I always hate the Cowboys just like I hate the Giants and I hate the Eagles. I hate every team in our division that we're taking on. But it's not, at least to me right now in the upper echelon. It's not like Bears Packers. It's not like Rams Niners or anything like that to me at the moment. Raven Steelers, you would agree is number one. In terms of their fans... The most intense NFL rival rivalry in terms of their fan bases hatred for each other. Yes. Yeah. That's the one that I think everybody would agree has been an intense rivalry, really almost coming up on... ...coming up on close to 20 years, you know, at this point. And everything else has been fleeting. That one's been more consistent, I think, over the years. Alright, 301-2-3-0-0-980. Skip, go ahead. Okay, Kevin, you know I go way back. The rivalry started 55 years ago with George Allen going down to Dallas.
And upsetting the Cowboys who were America's team at that point. And 20 to 16, typical George Allen fashion, they rushed a ball for almost 200 yards. Billy Kilmer just starting quarterback only through 10 times, completed five for 94 yards. And the defense, you know, 10 times, 10 passing attempts in an NFL game. That's true boys and girls. That's how the game was played way back then. Yes. And especially George Allen, who didn't believe much in throwing the ball. What was his favorite line skipped when you throw the football two of the three things that can happen are bad. Right. In completion or interception. Right. So that's when it all began. And you know, I know a lot of people calling in will know, you know, since then the 70s were certainly great. They played in the NFC championship two years after that.
Or a year after that actually. And in 72, at the end of 72. And then the 70s and the 80s, a lot of your people calling in remember the 80s. And I agree with you. I think the last really big game was 10 years ago on Thanksgiving. Yeah. When Kirk Cuddon's and crew had an excellent game with, of course, the defense. We haven't had a good defense in years. Yeah. Couldn't stop them. But it was a great game. And I think it was the highest rated NFL regular season game up until we've got. That moment, the high, the most watched NFL regular season game ever, you know, in that moment. I think there have been a couple that have topped that since. But the hype for that one was insane. By the way, that was Dak Prescott's rookie season. They were nine and one and Washington had demolished Green Bay on Sunday night football. And they went in there and they just couldn't get off the field and Hopkins missed two field goals.
And they lost 31 to 26. I think Kirk threw for like 460 or something like that. And, but the hype for that game, the buildup for that game, it really was. I remember I was doing the pregame show with Riggins down at a bar on Thanksgiving day. And we both had a pop or four. Right. It was. Yeah. He was in Adams Morgan actually. He just said, you know what? This one feels like it used to felt, it used to feel. I'm like, yeah, it really does. And, but I think that was the last time I truly felt that way. And I think it's just, you know, continued to go become more or become less relevant over the years. So, I think that was not top tier rivalry anymore. Right. I think the next biggest after Pittsburgh and Baltimore is Dallas Philadelphia. Yeah. Good one.
You're right. It's probably Dallas Philly after Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Sure. Thank you, Skip, as always. Let's go to Charles in Beltsville. Charles, do you still consider Washington Dallas to be a marquee NFL rivalry? Got to turn down your rating, Charles. I know it's not nationally, but for me, it is because I lived in Houston back in 1960 when the Cowboys, the Dallas Techers and the Houston All of All came in a league. And since there was other two teams were in the A L fail, I chose the Cowboys because they were in a fail. And the NFL was established. And wasn't sure that the other two teams would have last. So, I've been a Cowboys fan since that time. And I even bought West End season tickets so I could go out there when the Cowboys become the town. And man, you should have seen something that looked like I would get when I would go to the bathroom with Cowboys.
Yeah. It was dangerous back then. And the fast forward all the way up to 2017, I had a big conflict because in 2017, the risk in signing my grandson. And here I am, I died hard, Cowboys fan, and he was too. But he signed with Washington. And unfortunately, that didn't last very long because he got cut after preseason. And I'm still a Cowboys fan and will always be like I said, I'm going to fans since 1960. Yeah. You still have the feelings for it from a Dallas fan perspective, but you agree that nationally it's just not even close to what it was. Right. That's not your top tier NFL rivalry. Yeah. Right. But for me, it's still one of my favorite games. Thanks, Charles. Appreciate it.
Let's go to Joe and Springfield. Joe, go ahead. What's up, Kevin? How you doing? Hey, Joe. How are you? Right. So, look, I still would say that I always, I'm pumped out of where I would be playing the Cowboys. But it's the rivalry, the same. No, it is not. I mean, you just said Kevin, they won eight out of the last 10 against us. And it was also a threat, I think, from 97 to 2002 with me, 114 out of 15 games against us. It's not a rivalry. One team wins all the time. And I know there was a stretch when Joe Gibbs came back and we won those, like, you know, you just played in the game. It's been 20 years since we blocked that field goal. But also the money that I'm miracle in Dallas and we won by 21 against Dallas to winter playoff spot. And 2012 was exciting too when we won those games and go into the vision. But yeah, it's not the same as it used to be. I mean, it's exciting for it because it's a division game. Yeah, but you can't, you got to win the games against the rivalry. And Kevin, I will say that two years ago we won down there on the Termical and Touch on the Marcus Guru. That kind of wasn't important because we have lost that game. We would have played a wild card weekend after Philadelphia instead of going to Tampa Bay.
So it wasn't for the seedings. Yeah, no, you're right. It was the difference between a seven seed and a six seed. Yes, although we needed, remember, green beta lose and they did, you know, sort of stunning fashion at the same time. I think that's what it was. But yes, you're right. But Washington didn't play the game with a level of desperation and Dallas had nothing to play for. Yeah, okay. Thanks, Joe. Let's go to Anthony. Anthony, go ahead. So the answer is in fact, no. So you have to look at all the variables involved. Are we good? Are they good? Have we played in meaningful games against each other? Have they been sustained sustained success over an extended period of time? And there are other ones you can throw in there also. And where are you at in life at this time? So when you throw all that into the equation, the answer has to be no.
Because you can't say affirmatively that any of those games have taken place. Any other things that I just ran through, none of them have been applicable to the situation. So for me, it's a no. Yeah, it's a no. All right. Thank you. Enjoy Sunday. Let's make the two this year really meaningful. That would be nice. Billion Chantilly is Washington Dallas still a marquee NFL rivalry. I would start with this. Dan Schneider named this team the commander. So that's an important distinction here. He killed the rivalry with the name James who was killed before that with the team's performance. And this isn't a wake up call to the current group. They got to change this name. His name is absolutely the worst name at all professional sports. So that's a that's part a of this statement.
Okay, B. Part B is Dan Schneider was such a loser, such a misogynistic jag-off that he cost himself three billion- Billion, this team was sold for six billion. It's worth ten billion now. He lost four billion dollars. He lost a billion dollars a year. In four years, that's how God he ran this team into the ground. So change the name. Well, you know, I will tell you that that's probably not the right way to look at the transaction. The way to look at it would be if he had held on for another four more years. He would have been able to sell it for ten billion dollars. He got what he could get, which at the time was the most ever paid for a North American sports franchise. But you say no, it's not the marquee rivalry that it once was, correct? Kevin, you're wrong. He could not have sold it for ten billion.
I didn't see. He could not have sold it for ten billion. He ran it into the ground. It doesn't matter. Look at the values just been skyrocketing. The private equity, the foreign money that now is accessible for these franchises. I mean, come on, Seattle, Seattle, that market is not anywhere near what this market is. And market has a lot to do with it. All right, let me move on to Athens. Athens, finish it up for us real quickly. Is Washington Dallas still a top tier NFL rivalry? Yes or no? No, not even close. I mean, they've owned us since 2000 with a 36 and 16 record. You throw in the loss of the name. DAX got like a 13 and two record with like 32 touchdowns versus five picks. And like a 110 pass or rating. And then, I mean, you'd like you said it, Kevin, we beaten them in meaningless games. So it's, no, it's lost its flavor. And I don't know if it'll ever come back. It's pretty disappointing because it was one of the greatest rivalries. When I was growing up, I just, I ate, slept and breathed, eating the cowboys.
But it's not nowhere near that anymore. Thanks for the call. Yeah, I mean, again, some of you don't know this. It wasn't just Washington and Dallas. This was the league's marquee games of the year. For basically two and a half to three decades, the schedule maker said, all right, where are we going to put Washington versus Dallas on the two different dates? And the networks would fight over it. Fight over it. And almost every year, one of those games was a nationally televised game. I think Washington, Dallas is still top two all time in terms of prime time head-to-head matchups. I think it's Raiders Broncos, which is the leader. All right, Ben's standing next. Woop! Sleep better, train smarter, recover faster and feel healthier. Understand and optimize your sleep. He writes prolifically and very well in covering this team. All right, let's just get to it. What, who do you think at this point will be ruled in for the game of those key injuries, a con quo, and of course, Frankie Louvue, and who will be ruled out?
Do you think by the time we get to Sunday? Yeah, so they also quit Kim Law, the DNP, yesterday with a back, but he was out there when we were just out there for a start of practice. Practice and participating. Looks like he should be OK. A con clue was working with the training staff, kind of not a dresser, anything, doing anything like everybody else. So kind of guessing he's out Louvue, I think is the maybe more than 50, 50, he was out there participating in the stretching parts, but he wasn't dressed to play football, so to speak. So maybe he's the iffy one obviously they added to linebacker. So the practice squad that factors in the Jordan McGee part of it all, but that could be a thing. So I think he's the one to me that feels the borderline. The other two, I think we're a pretty clear idea. Yeah, I think you agree with me, right, that defensively there are high expectations in that building for the fit. That is Frankie Louvue with the Dorontay Jones defense.
Yeah, I mean, you know, if you had to sort of label Louvue style in any one way, it would be like energetic, and not that that's not something you're looking for in any defense, but in this one in particular, the level of aggressiveness that they're looking for upfront. And sort of the mania most of their opening to cause is feel like it's a perfect fit for what he. What he is, and obviously, you know, we all probably make too big of a deal about the whole green dot situation, but he's got that, you know, football IQ part of it as well to be able to deal with that. So yeah, I mean, he was one of those guys that thought, okay, this makes this defense should work for him. And obviously just getting more options coming off the edge so he doesn't have to do that like last year. I don't think he was having a particular great year, regardless, but once all the interest that had happened, they started using him as the edge to really kind of change what he can do. And now he's back to being, you know, in better situations for his type of game.
Let's go back to Monday because after you appeared on the show, Dan Quinn later on that afternoon spoke and he, I mean, disagree with me if you want, but I thought that that was as critical publicly as he's been of a player since he's been the coach. He really called out Mikey Sanrestone the performance. There was much more support on Wednesday, Dorante Jones talked about it. Sanrestone has been a major topic this week in terms of his performance. So A, do you agree with me that that's about as negative or as critical, I shouldn't say negative as Dan Quinn's been and B, will it end up manifesting itself in fewer snaps? On Sunday in Dallas? Yeah, I mean, so that was my question to him and you know, sometimes I just think you got to ask, hey, this happened.
What, what, you know, this will leave a kind of open end is the last question. It was a press conference. I don't know why you get the last question, but that's another subject. Feel free to ask that question to out loud us more. But the, so yeah, you know, oftentimes you say, you know, Dan Quinn does not often give public criticism like that. Even here, he didn't totally only listen to his tone and not really listen to the words. It didn't sound anything like it was a real reprimand or anything, but when he said it's unacceptable and you know, kind of then when discussing the 64 yard catch to wicks or by wicks in which Sanrestone seemed to pull up, looking for the ball and he's like, come on, you got to eat man, you got to finish that play. You know, I think that was a pretty aggressive deal. And I think something to keep in mind here is that yes, it's week one. And I know that people go with only week one already relaxed. Yeah, except is that really how they're thinking about it? Like this is the year three for Dan Quinn.
We can all say he's not an offie. I don't think he is, but I'm going to be all recognized last year was bad. And they need to do better and that the players who've been here for the duration of that time, like it's sort of like, hey, we've given you opportunity. Obviously, Mikey's had some good moments, no doubt about it. But last year he was a bit of a wreck from the slot. And you know, he's not big enough to really be on the outside consistently. And that's why it's been like kind of curious for having for all of like what's going to happen. So in terms of like is this going to lead? And then even with Doront, hey Jones, Doront, hey Jones didn't come in. You know, he didn't maybe drop. If we're saying I'd point drop the hammer. He didn't maybe do that. But when asked what's the coaching message to Santa? So this week and he starts with urgency. Yeah, that's also not a. Oh, it's, you know, we're fine. Nobody deal like that. Yeah, man, we were going to need more for you. So then you factor in the Dallas has. Yeah, not just a pair of really, really good receivers, but they got guys with bigger bodies and say what's still the delphy was presenting last week. It just makes too much sense. I think there were so Douglas.
He should be playing more, I would think. I mean, he's the most experienced of the outside corners they have. He's the biggest guy. I mean, like the Santa's still in the Robertson or like 5859. Dougal to the legit six to. So it seems to be logical. That's going to be the case. Now if that means, you know, Roberts and her center center. Her center center drops to becoming the nickel. Maybe, but I could see that being center still and playing less. And you know, oftentimes on the corner back is out there that guy played like the whole game. Like Robertson played every snap of the center stone and miss like one or two. Yeah, it was 54 out of the 55. Yep. Yeah. So, you know, I mean, I'm not thinking you have no role. It just depends on how often they would go with nickel and things like that. But yeah, I could absolutely think Dougal has to be out there more. And plus they added a corner to the regular roster yesterday. This 30 year old corner that's bounced around the league. Isaac Idiom. I don't know how you pronounce it. So that was interesting. I also thought the addition of this guy Patrick Lucas, who's been in the league for a while, was interesting earlier this week.
Did you find both of those ads, you know, at least worth discussing because of the interior offensive line in the cornerback position? Yeah, well, so on the corner, he's another guy. It's like it basically been a backup most of his career. Everybody's played. He's also got the size 6.1. So perhaps that's a factor there as far as it's a Luke, Lucas Patrick. Yeah, I mean, he's a guy. You know, the very people that we've people said, hey, why don't you go out inside this guy or that guy? You know, guys been around while he's one of those guys that he hasn't played as much starting wise last couple of years. But yeah, classic guy who can plug and play to a certain degree, not saying be great, but just can can do it. It is sort of obdo to have four backup offensive lineman as they do and only one of them plays tackle. Like that, that's kind of weird in the end. Wiley right. Andrew Wiley, right. And he's not, you know, left tackles never really been part of his portfolio.
And somehow, you know, knock on wood, something happened to Brandon Coleman. I guess they would go to Wiley, but that would be pretty tough spot. I would think relative to ideal, but it's not he did find left tackle. So yeah, I mean, I, you know, we talk when they let DJ Humphries go. Is this like, okay, are they doing this because they don't want to pay the veteran? If you keep the veteran on the week one roster, you want to pay that guy going forward? Well, essentially, that's what they did here. They bring the guy after week one and you know, like he gives them a least experience because the other two guys have met Goldman and tell you how they're both working. So, you know, now they at least have two vets who've played in the league more than one game. So I would think that Patrick could be easily be the first guy off the bench if they ever needed one. You know, I don't know how quickly he takes him to ramp up, but yeah, I mean, I think in that regard, but I still just think it's weird. Like the whole backup line thing had it been going at it and again to have one tackle is abnormal. Not saying it's wrong, but it's not the norm. Dorans Armstrong is back this week after serving a one game suspension Sunday. Do you think that this is, you know, sort of a rotational thing with chase on away and Dorans Armstrong in terms of their edge players?
Are we going to see a lot of him Sunday? Yeah, I mean, I think that's going to be a really, really interesting dynamic is to see how they're going to play this out. You know, it was deprived of me was not that away played last week, but away it was the fifth most nasty played any game in his career. Despite the fact that he hadn't been out there for like two to three weeks, because the either so they just threw him out there. They're going to play him that that much in a game and which he's just coming back hard to see him being off the field too long. You know, they in order to bring up the open up the spot for the corner back, they released Ricky Barber. I presume he'll go back to the practice squad here or we'll see, but my point is like, okay, so if they're doing that, what is that suggest? I think what it may be a suggest to me is that like, especially in passing down, they'll use a Charles the Manu and Dorans Armstrong inside as like defensive tackles. And that's a way to maybe get him on the field a little bit more and while keeping away and chase on.
So, you know, I don't have a sense that he's on any kind of me on any kind of pitch count with coming up that injury. I mean, he's not been back for a little bit. So the question is, yeah, how did I deploy these guys? I think it all be on the field at the same time, but so that would be a little bit outside the box. But so a lot of the time they come to doing here with this scheme. So yeah, I think there's creative ways to find to get them on the field. But this is going to be like if this defense is going to break a certain peak of calling havoc, this is how it is going to happen. So, I think there's three guys flying off the edge or wherever they're coming from and if Armstrong does anything close to what he was last year, then that could be a pretty, pretty fun group. Talking, of course, to Ben Standing. And they've got the Cowboys Sunday at 425. What else just this week? Did you learn if anything from Quinn, from Jaden, from Blaal, from Dorante Jones? Did anything stick out that we haven't talked about yet?
Before we get to Dallas. You know, I mean, you know, I think they're, it's weird like, you know, I think because they're all professionals at what they do. And you know, sometimes we act, can't act in dignity like, have there they make a mistake or something. In the case of the coordinators, especially Blaal, you know, this was their first time at the radio. So, you know, I'm not the suggest that like, this is not about the shovel pass or, or anything else he necessarily did or didn't do. But it is, you know, going through the process of how it all works in real time. It's something we talked about, you know, I talked about here, or the course of the summer. I mean, everybody can tell me that they've been blowed the next Sean McVeigh, but they can't tell me that based on having watched him call plays in the fourth quarter of the clock, keeping down. And you need to get a first down, you know, to keep the drive going. So, you know, I just think that's an important concept of all of this. And you know, you learn from mistakes, but also just the experience of it all.
So, you know, I just, that was somebody who sort of kept sticking in my mind all week listening, you know, as we're discussing, again, the two point call or, you know, why aren't they are getting the ball more or whatever it might be. And I think these are things that, you know, the stressing at the fourth quarter of the month. I thought that was a very interesting answer. He immediately said no. He was not pleased with it. You know, there was definitely some issues with receivers being covered too easily in their scheme Sunday against Philadelphia. Philadelphia is really good. But I thought that was actually an interesting quick like no, not pleased with the spacing. Everything in the past game. And it didn't leave a lot of options on several plays through the first two three quarters. Yeah, you know, that I was looking at and I'm blanking on which side I was looking at, but like I think Terry McCormon, like that, you know, average separation. His separation was like significantly higher than an average of average separation the last couple of years.
But that didn't translate though to obviously production. So, you know, you got to take all these information with maybe grain of salt, but you got to look at it all in totality to see it. I didn't like crack necessarily every one of his routes to see what was going on, but yeah, obviously they didn't get in the ball. And then you like I said, blower made, making up the spacing and, you know, look, I mean, Philly is also really good at what they do. And I think again, sometimes that you get lost in the conversation with any of us about it's not just what your team is doing is what the other team is doing. And, you know, hopefully for their sake for watching the sake that what they were working the fourth quarter for gaden ago 9-11 to two touchdowns is essentially, hey, we just had our preseason through the first three quarters. Now we're going here in the fourth and we're feeling better. So hopefully that's more of what's the common Dallas defense obviously looked like. You know, wasn't particularly good. So hopefully that's something they can take advantage of. All right. Let's talk about Dallas Sunday. How do you see it going? What do you think they have to do to win?
Yeah, you know, obviously at a very base level of football, you know, controlling the clock, moving the chains, I eat, you know, running the ball the way of doing that is always so huge. And Dallas gave up, you know, what 160 yards on the ground against a giant team. That's not exactly, you know, leading up running back. So, you know, we've seen what Bill can do in the last in on Sunday and Philly. I mean, he was caring the offense, but he was arguing with the most positive part of it for a good chunk of the game. Obviously, then of course, has the fumble late. I don't think they've lost confidence in him. I think they've got to play the ball away. But you know, I think if Bill, you know, it built and do what Bill does, the one cut and bolt, I think that you know, he could have a big game against that defense. And then if that happens, it just makes life much easier for Jaden and the passing game with play action or what have you and keeps Dallas is off and off the field, which is, you know, of course, probably the strongest group. I mean, just that press guys obviously annihilated Washington in his career. The two receivers that they've got are, you know, among the better ones in the league. This is arguably the best tandem receiver tandem in the league.
So the more you can keep them off the field, the better. And I think that really starts with running it with with Bill. And you know, again, I think they showed an ability to do that last week to a degree. But you know, this again, a similar to Dallas is closer to what they showed last week than they are, you know, a stout run defense. Then I think they should have success. And I think that's going to be pretty important for for Washington, but besides the ball. So your prediction is. Oh, man, I mean, I'll go with the locals and say Washington 27, 24. You know, week one, as we know, can be full golden either direction and make hard imagine Dallas is the best is that bad. Their offense was very productive in the short time they had the ball, but the giants kept away from it. So I'll say that. And, you know, I think Dallas has got, you know, they're missing what Tyrosmith on the offensive line. You know, this group, when that was the best thing I think Washington showed was the play there can make as a pass records, but also just tackles from off and that 10 of those way more than what Philly had in both tackles for loss and sack. So with that type of activity. And if the offense does take advantage of Dallas, then, you know, I think they can, you know, win this game. And, you know, these look to say at the very, very different conversation if we're talking on Monday at one and one versus 0 and two.
Yeah, it always is. These early season games when you've been a team that, you know, is fighting to get to Thanksgiving with a chance. It's important that you get a few early on. Thank you. Appreciate it. Always man. Ben standing. He'll be back with us on Monday at noon the day after the game. I want to tell you about my experience with BMW of silver spring. So I've driven BMWs for three plus decades. I know the brand really well. I love the brand. I know what I like. I know what I'm looking for. I needed a new one because the one I was in was older. I've been driving X5s. I went to see BMW of silver spring in particular. My guide, a general manager there, Steve Sirecki. He's got a phenomenal team of people. If you end up going out there, Dave Strassman is a piece of work. He's one of my favorite people that I've ever been around at a dealership.
He's going to make sure that you know every single thing about that vehicle before you actually even get into it. Steve's done such a great job with that dealership. He's a huge skins fan. He took care of me. I drove away in a beautiful new X5 nicer than the one that I had before. And the best part was I was even with the upgrade able to keep my payment right where it was. I had an incredible experience at BMW of silver spring. I couldn't be happier with the way everything worked out. Now if you're looking for your next BMW or maybe even your first BMW, BMW of silver spring has plenty to choose from. More than 350 vehicles and stock backed by a 4.8 star rating. After 30 plus years of driving BMWs, a bought a few of these things. BMW of silver spring made this one incredibly easy. They're conveniently located just off route 29 in Briggs, Cheney Road in the silver spring auto park. When you get there, make sure the first thing you do when you walk in as you ask for Steve Sirecki and you tell them that Kevin Sheehan told you to ask for Steve and he'll take really good care of you.

I'm Dana Carvey I'm David space flying the walls back for another season now on audio and video every Monday and Thursday so many incredible guests will be joining us follow and listen to fly in the wall everywhere you get your podcast to get to. All right six and two last week I'm nine two and one overall through two weeks I like two games tonight in college football Miami and wake forest are playing in Winston Salam Miami was so dominant last week so dominant against Florida a.m. The literally Florida a.m. and their wonderful legendary band asked for mercy they cut the fourth quarter clock from 15 minutes to 10 minutes so Miami wouldn't roll up 100 plus Darien Mences the Heisman favorite right now Malachi Tony might be the most exciting player in college football the
James ranked fifth in the country and they're playing awake force team that needed multiple over times to get by a pretty bad Purdue team last week 38 to 36 the numbers 20 and a half and it is just hung there all week it's a critical number 21 is and when you're under 21 and you get the public loving a favorite to annihilate another team they they'd like to actually see it at 20 and a half rather than 21 because 21 three touchdowns 42 to 21 wins you know 49 to 28 wins so they are betting Miami at a very very significant sizeable level and wake forest is the anti public play in the fact that that number has been sitting there 20 and a half and it hasn't been raised to 21 or 21 and a half to try to win it's incentivize more people to bet on wake forest it tells me that sports books not only need wake force tonight but they actually like the side and they're inviting more Miami action the first play and I've been looking for 21 I can't find it out there anywhere is wake force tonight plus 20 and a half against Miami the other game tonight and it's probably the best game of the night is Texas tech
and Houston Texas tech in Houston both actually in their first two games played a similar opponent Houston played Oregon state on Labor Day weekend and 133 to 20 Texas tech last week faced Oregon state and won the game 35 to 24 both teams are ranked Texas tech higher in the rankings and they're giving seven and a half again one of those games in which that seven and a half number and I've looked for it there are no wait a minute hold on for one second yeah there are no sevens out there there no six and a half's out there they are begging you to play Houston and get that extra half point over a key number seven and the public's doing it right now so I don't love the number I'd love to get it at seven and I'll end up buying the half point myself but since I can't find any sevens out there Texas tech minus the seven and a half tonight
at home against Houston let's go to tomorrow and the SEC in particular were Mississippi state last week had a pretty impressive win blowing out Minnesota on the road 38 to 13 as just a one point favorite and they're facing a South Carolina team that is coming off you know two meaningless wins over bad teams can't state and Towson South Carolina's favorite in the game and once again one of these very important numbers the number is three and a half in this game and the public's pounding Mississippi state plus the three and a half I'll take that extra half point they're not going to lose by more than a field goal if they lose at all I think they're going to win the game so I got to lay the three and a half and take the game cocks at home tomorrow the other college play and this is going to do it for college is Auburn once again not getting a favorable number there are no
three is out there at this point they're getting two and a half in the public's pounding Florida at Auburn Auburn's you know an interesting team this year they've got the quarterback from USF Brown from last year I really like him they beat Bailer in an unimpressive offensive display in week one in in the where was that game in Dallas or Atlanta one of those two places neutral field they won the game 17 to 16 they beat Southern Miss last week 43 to eight people are excited about the Gators this year by the way there's something about Florida and Auburn I love it when both of these teams are good like really good it's been a minute or two this used to be like such a marquee game on a Saturday night in September Florida Auburn and it doesn't feel that way Auburn LSU same kind of a thing Auburn's got to get back to that level but the the game of the day the game of September really is Ole Miss in LSU from Oxford on Saturday night it'll be happening at the same time Florida and Auburn are playing at Jordan Hare I'm going to take Auburn plus the two and a half again I'll buy the half point to get it to three myself but I can't find any threes out there so with that under stood actually I'm seeing
let me just see something real quickly because of course this happens all the time and I'm going to take advantage of this on Fridays when it happens yeah I'm seeing two and a half in twos out there and I think there's some sharp money on Auburn so Auburn plus the two and a half at home against Florida that's the play there I'm seeing some crazy numbers on this game right now pull up max one of your sites see what you got for Auburn Florida because now I'm seeing some one and a half's and ones out there so there's super sharp money right now in Auburn Auburn Auburn's the play okay just FYI and there's still a two and a half or three out there so I'm going to take the two and a half I'm seeing two and a half Auburn plus two and a half I would jump on it now and buy the half point when you can if you want to get it to three because this would not surprise me if we get to kick off and Auburn's getting a point and a half or less against Florida those are the four college plays let's move to Sunday where after a week in which points were scored at record levels I'm going to give you some totals this week and some unders but we'll start with one of the games of the day you know after 59 was hung on Carolina week one Ben Jouff
Johnson gets Brian floors as defense in week two that numbers down to five now was five and a half I see some four and a half's out there as well the public's on Chicago recent you know recency bias is everything in contrarian betting you look for where a team played great the previous week and the team they're playing maybe didn't Chicago's perceived to be a juggernaut here by most NFL fans they're laying less than a touchdown at soldier field against Minnesota I'll take the Vikings plus the five and even more importantly I'll take the under 48 in this game there are some not out there that are a little bit lower I see a 48 and a half but not more than one after the points Minnesota scored 39 and Chicago scored 59 and the world is playing the over in this game take under 48 New Orleans and Baltimore Baltimore rolled up 41 the Saints rolled up 30 and an over time loss the total in that game is 47 I'll take under 48
in the Saints Ravens game Atlanta Carolina this is a strange game but Carolina really rolled up some offense and rolled up some points in the game and the total in this game is another total that people think is too low at 44 I will take under Atlanta Carolina 44 in that game let's go to Sunday night football and then I'm going to work my way but actually wait a minute my fault I got a couple of other games Philly right now is the biggest public play on the board the Eagles are laying seven to Tennessee after Tennessee looked the way it's up to seven and a half now I'll take the seven and a half there's seven and a half all over the board now I'll take Tennessee plus the seven and a half Philly's a massive public play as is Tampa Lang seven and a half eight now to Cleveland I'll take the Browns plus the eight against the Buckingeers Sunday night football this might be the game that I like more than any other game that I've given out Kansas City off Monday night football looking impressive
Indy getting blown out by Baltimore in week one and the Colts are getting less than a touchdown give me the Colts I hope that I can get some sevens by Monday night right now it's six and a half that's how I'll give it out I should wait until Monday to see if we can get a better number but I'll take Indy plus this six and a half Miami's a big anti public side at plus 13 and a half there are some 14s there so I'll grab a 14 on the dolphins at San Francisco nobody's going to play Miami and that'll do it there you go let me recap this tonight tonight Wake Forest plus 20 and a half against Miami Texas Tech minus seven and a half against Houston tomorrow South Carolina minus three and a half against Mississippi State and Auburn plus two and a half against Florida Sunday let me do it by window Minnesota plus five at Chicago
the under in the Minnesota Chicago game under 48 Cleveland plus eight yeah the smell test gives out terrible teams at Tampa Tennessee plus seven and a half at home against Philadelphia the under in the Atlanta Carolina game the number is 44 Miami plus 14 at San Francisco and then in the Sunday night game Indy plus six and a half at Arrowhead against the chiefs yeah I've got to give that game out today I was thinking for a second it was a Monday night game there you go all of the smell test picks when we come back we'll go around the NFL there's some really big time matchups and Max and I will predict Sunday's game in Dallas Kevin she and show the team 980 and the team 980 dot com. All right give it to us Max all right we're going to start off with the NFC South we're going down to Atlanta as are the Carolina Panthers coming off that big loss to the Chicago Bears where they still scored 37 points the Falcons coming off that game against the Pittsburgh Steelers so what we got spread is two and a half in favor of the Panthers over under 43 and a half what do you think I really like price
price young now is a quarterback looks good I really started to see it last year I think Dave can Alice really is a guy that's done phenomenal work with quarterbacks Gino Smith Baker mayfield now price young I mean people gave up on price young after the first two seasons he really came on last year there's some really good receivers Jalen cocker Ted McMillan wasn't my favorite receiver coming out but he was good last year Chuba Hubbard can really run the Falcons are going to start Cooper rush again I think that's correct right yeah panic's probably will come back to week three yeah I gave this out as an under game under 44 I could see it going either way with the Falcons added at home they still have be John Robinson and that Carolina defense is bad man so I I I lean Panthers but I think it could be a very very close game something in the neighborhood of 21 to 20 something like that. Yeah NFC sells always a weird division to predict but speaking of the NFC South the New Orleans Saints are had north up to Baltimore they are eight and a half point under dogs and the over
under 46 and a half Saints coming off that it was a big final push against the Lions couldn't get it done Ravens smoked Indianapolis what do we think here. I'll tell you this the Saints are just an interesting team they weren't the end of last year I think they're really well coached Kellan more does a good job offensively Brandon Staley is the defense of coordinators are really good. I mean they basically put up in the second half 30 points and like 350 yards of offense and the second half and in overtime they were down 21 nothing you know midway through the third quarter. I like Tyler Schuck I like what he did because he didn't look good in the first half Baltimore is really tough the key to any Baltimore game for the opponent is can you slow down the run can you force Lamar to beat you from the pocket in the move the football just a bit too much. Sloppiness in week one I think the Saints keep this one close I really do I don't think they win it but I think they keep it close.
What's next all right next up I'm going to skip Packers jets just because that sounds feels like a stinky game and I really want to get to this next one the jets were almost the smell test pick almost almost almost yeah what what do you got Vikings bears you've already given out two smell test picks on it very interesting game Brian Flores defense taking on Ben Johnson's offense over under like you said you got it at 48 I'm seeing 47 and a half but it's very close what we got in this one. Well I mean I'm not a believer in Carson Wentz I don't think color Murray is going to play I'm absolutely a believer in Ben Johnson in the bears offense but the bears defense was not very good last. That and the Vikings defense is good this is going to be one of those games like if if it comes in at under and it comes in with the underdog it's going to be a lower possession faster moving game. Where maybe the bears are successful offensively but just with less possessions turnovers will mean everything in this game I got something like you know bears 24 to 20 something like that at home to get to 2 and 0 but I give the Vikings a shot on the road and I'm not a not a Carson went sky but the bears defensively are not great.
I mean if the Vikings defense holds the bears offense to under 25 that's going to be a big blow for Ben Johnson want to score the most points in and in one season in NFL history right. Alright next up pretty sneaky good matchup I mean the bangles coming off an interesting game last week against the box and then the Houston Texans were in a dog fight against the Buffalo bills whose offense I mean looked unstoppable again last night. Bangle's are 2 and a half point underdogs for over under is 45 and a half what are we thinking here Kevin we're thinking that you know the bangles got four fumbles in the game last week three from Baker mayfield and CJ strouled fumbled once fumbled twice in the game he's got seven turnovers in his last two games. So if Houston's going to go ahead and hand Cincinnati the ball a couple of times they're going to get beat if they don't they're going to win the football game it's really that that simple but to open up with you know a team that we thought could be the best offensive team in football with Josh Allen and the bills offense and then Joe burrow in the bang and the bangles offense with both of those games at home.
That is a tough tough way to start but you got to get this one I think I like Houston to win this game but CJ strouled has to continue to attack which he does but hold on to the football. Alright next up we're going to New England the Pittsburgh Steelers taking on the Patriots as 4 and a half point underdogs over under 41 and a half I like the Steelers here a lot I think that defense going to have Drake may see and goes much like he did against Seattle. What do you think here Kevin? Well I think this is one of those games this week where it's like you could see a 17 14 kind of a game you know neither team necessarily is going to be super explosive now to be fair to the Steelers Aaron Rogers should have had three additional touchdown passes Sunday against Atlanta legitimately two were just dropped in the end zone and one there was probably a penalty on it. That wasn't called but it would have been a touchdown had DK met Caff help on to it the Patriots obviously have had a long weight here since that opener at Seattle I think this is you know a game that goes down to the wire and is won by a field goal by either team late.
Both defenses outstanding the Steelers are older but they looked really good but that was against Cooper rush this is Drake may and company and I I looked for Drake made a bounce back. I like the Patriots to win a very close game I could see the Steelers covering. Okay next up the Cleveland Browns had in two Tampa to take on Baker Mayfield and the box Baker lost three fumbles last week against the Cincinnati Bengals defense Browns did not look great at all against the Jags eight and a half points right over. The last start for Dishon Watson you'll get your Sanders in the home matchup look I gave out the Browns simply on contrarian principle nobody's going to bet him this week. So I am I don't know how they keep it close they're they're absolutely horrible offensively and the bucks really move the football against Cincinnati was just the turnovers that killed him so I'll go you know Tampa something like 24 to 17 so they get the cover. The Browns do but the bucks get the win all right Eagles Titans I wasn't really going to talk about this one but then I did see it's going to be a it's going to feel like 100 it's the temperature is going to be a hundred degrees it's going to feel like 105 plus at kickoff.
Eagles are favored by seven over under 39 and a half. Whether it's going to be a factor in this one kev I think it's going to be low scoring and I think it's going to be close to the tight thanks cover Eagles win yep. All right big match up in the four o'clock slate the Jags heading to Denver as two and a half point. I'll sit back and watch this game but we can't because our games on at the same time we watch the fourth quarter really yeah you can write to watch the first few minutes I love Jacksonville this year I really do I think this could be a big big year for Trevor Lawrence Liam Cohen that combination with Trevor Lawrence is a really good one. Denver needs to win this game they were an AFC favorite Jacksonville beat Denver last year late in the season and could have faced Denver in the divisional round had they not lost a buffalo in the wild card round love this match up I'm going to go with Jacksonville to beat Denver on the road for the second straight year and to get to do. Already next up the Raiders they came off a win last week against the future Miami dolphins and the chargers the shocking loss of the week.
The Raiders keep her own the chargers bounce back here. I charge or should bounce back but I call the Raiders being better than most people thought before the year started their over under number jumped from five and a half to six and a half after their win over Miami it's not like it's an impressive win but action genty in that scheme and that clink Kubi X scheme. Wow was he impressive last week I don't know that Brock Bowers will be back but mayors a good tight end Kirk played really well in the first half. They're going to have to score some but that Raider defense gets past rush pressure with crossby cross being company Quitte pay was outstanding for the Raiders. I could see the Raiders keeping it close all right we got a we got a wrap here we do run in Dallas. My prediction is that this is a Washington week to win in a very close game Washington wins 24 to 21. It's a walkoff Drew Stevens field goal at the gun from 48 yards out Washington gets to one in one.
All right and I know we're short on time but I do want to throw to the Cowboys fans sitting in the studio Brian West Brian. I got a way to Cowboys 30 to 21. Ooh 30 to 21 Cowboys from the Cowboys fan on this show Max what do you got Washington 27 give me the Cowboys 21. All right back on Monday enjoy it everybody have a good weekend.
